Abstract:We introduce a new generalization of Wythoff Nim using three piles of stones. We show that its P-positions have finite difference properties and produce a partition of positive integers. Further, we give a conjecture that the P-positions approximate a semi-line whose slope is described by algebraic numbers of degree 5.

Abstract:Wythoff's Nim is a variant of 2-pile Nim in which players are allowed to take any positive number of stones from pile 1, or any positive number of stones from pile 2, or the same positive number from both piles. The player who makes the last move wins. It is well-known that the P-positions (losing positions) are precisely those where the two piles have sizes $\{\lfloor \phi n \rfloor, \lfloor \phi^2n \rfloor \}$ for some integer $n\geq 0$, and $\phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 = 1.6180\cdots$. In this paper we consider an altered form of Wythoff's Nim where an arbitrary finite set of positions are designated to be P or N positions. The values of the remaining positions are computed in the normal fashion for the game. We prove that the set of P-positions of the altered game closely resembles that of a translated normal Wythoff game. In fact the fraction of overlap of the sets of P-positions of these two games approaches $1$ as the pile sizes being considered go to infinity.

Abstract:The authors introduce the impartial game of the generalized Ryūō Nim, a variant of the classical game of Wythoff Nim. In the latter game, two players take turns in moving a single queen on a large chessboard, attempting to be the first to put her in the upper left corner, position $(0,0)$. Instead of the queen used in Wythoff Nim, we use the generalized Ryūō for a given natural number $p$. The generalized Ryūō for $p$ can be moved horizontally and vertically, as far as one wants. It also can be moved diagonally from $(x,y)$ to $(x-s,y-t)$, where $s,t$ are non-negative integers such that $1 \leq s \leq x, 1 \leq t \leq y \textit{and} s+t \leq p-1$. When $p$ is $3$, the generalized Ryūō for $p$ is a Ryūō, i.e., a promoted hisha piece of Japanese chess. A Ryūō combines the power of the rook and the king in Western chess. The generalized Ryūō Nim for $p$ is mathematically the same as the Nim with two piles of counters in which a player may take any number from either heap, and a player may also simultaneously remove $s$ counters from either of the piles and $t$ counters from the other, where $s+t \leq p-1$ and $p$ is a given natural number. The Grundy number of the generalized Ryūō Nim for $p$ is given by $\bmod(x+y,p) + p(\lfloor \frac{x}{p} \rfloor \oplus \lfloor \frac{y}{p}\rfloor)$. The authors also study the generalized Ryūō Nim for $p$ with a pass move. The generalized Ryūō Nim for $p$ without a pass move has simple formulas for Grundy numbers. This is not the case after the introduction of a pass move, but it still has simple formulas for the previous player's positions. We also study the Ryūō Nim that restricted the diagonal and side movement. Moreover, we extended the Ryūō Nim dimension to the $n$-dimension.

On variations of Yama Nim and Triangular Nim

Abstract:Yama Nim is a two heaps Nim game introduced in the second author's Master Thesis, where the player takes more than $2$ tokens from one heap, and return $1$ token to the other heap. Triangular Nim is a generalization, where the player takes several tokens from one heap, and return some tokens (at least one token) to the other heap, so that the total number of the tokens in the heaps decrease strictly. In this paper, we investigate their winning strategies, Grundy numbers, and their variations and generalizations. Particularly interesting is the Wythoff variations, where in addition to the Yama/Triangular Nim moves, the player is allowed to take tokens from both heaps, say $i$ tokens from the first heap and $j$ tokens from the other, under some restrictions for $i$ and $j$. For example when we force $i=j>0$ for the Triangular Nim, then the pair of non-negative integers $(x, y)$ with $x$ less than or equal to $y$ is in the $P$-position if and only if $(x, y) is in {(0, 0), (0, 1), (1, 3), (3, 6), (6, 10), (10, 15), ...}$, namely the winning strategy is described by triangular numbers. In other rulesets, we also found examples where the square numbers, pentagonal numbers, geometric progressions, and so on.

Abstract:In an amalgamation Nim, players are allowed to use a move from the traditional form of Nim or to amalgamate two piles when they are not empty. No formula that describes the set of P-positions of Amalgamation Nim is known. The author gives a condition on the amalgamation of two piles. Players can amalgamate two piles only when the number of stones in these two piles is equal to or more than 2. Then, we get a formula that describes the set of P-positions for this variant of amalgamation Nim.

Abstract:This paper introduces a variant of the impartial combinatorial game nim, called tree nim, as well as a particular case of tree nim called tripod nim. A certain existence-uniqueness result and a periodicity result are proven about the distribution of $\mathcal{P}$-positions and Grundy values in tree nim. Tripod nim is associated to a family of arrays similar to those which arise in the study of sequential compound games. Using these arrays, a partial analysis is given for tripod nim. Conjectures relating to the periods of the rows of these arrays are put forward.

Abstract:We compare to different extensions of the ancient game of nim: Moore's nim$(n, \leq k)$ and exact nim$(n, = k)$. Given integers $n$ and $k$ such that $0 < k \leq n$, we consider $n$ piles of stones. Two players alternate turns. By one move it is allowed to choose and reduce any (i) at most $k$ or (ii) exactly $k$ piles of stones in games nim$(n, \leq k)$ and nim$(n, = k)$, respectively. The player who has to move but cannot is the loser. Both games coincide with nim when $k=1$. Game nim$(n, \leq k)$ was introduced by Moore (1910) who characterized its Sprague-Grundy (SG) values 0 (that is, P-positions) and 1. The first open case is SG values 2 for nim$(4, \leq 2)$. Game nim$(n, = k)$, was introduced in 2018. An explicit formula for its SG function was computed for $2k \geq n$. In contrast, case $2k < n$ seems difficult: even the P-positions are not known already for nim$(5,=2)$. Yet, it seems that the P-position of games nim$(n+1,=2)$ and nim$(n+1,\leq 2)$ are closely related. (Note that P-positions of the latter are known.) Here we provide some theoretical and computational evidence of such a relation for $n=5$.

Abstract:The ordinary game of Nim has a long history and is well-known in the area of combinatorial game theory. The solution to the ordinary game of Nim has been known for many years and lends itself to numerous other solutions to combinatorial games. Nim was extended to graphs by taking a fixed graph with a playing piece on a given vertex and assigning positive integer weight to the edges that correspond to a pile of stones in the ordinary game of Nim. Players move alternately from the playing piece across incident edges, removing weight from edges as they move. This paper solves Nim on hypercubes in the unit weight case completely. We briefly discuss the arbitrary weight case and its ties to known results.

Abstract:Here, we present a variant of Nim with two piles. In the first pile, we have stones with a weight of 1, and in the second pile, we have stones with a weight of -2. Two Players take turns to take stones from one of the piles, and the total weight of stones to be removed should be equal to or less than half of the total weight of the stones in the pile. The player who removed the last stone or stones is the winner of the game. The authors discovered that when (n,m) is a previous player's winning position, 2m+1 is the last remaining number of the Josephus problem, where there are n -numbers, and every second number is to be removed. There are similar relations between the position of which the Grundy number is s and the (n-s)-th removed number.

Abstract:The authors present formulas for the previous player's winning positions of two variants of restricted Nim. In both of these two games, there is one pile of stones, and in the first variant, we investigate the case that in k-th turn, you can remove f(k) stones at most, where f is a function whose values are natural numbers. In the second variant, there are two kinds of stones. The Type 1 group consists of stones with the weight of one, and the Type 2 group consists of stones with the weight of two. Abstract:Given a hypergraph $\cH \subseteq 2^I \setminus \{\emptyset\}$ on the ground set $I = \{1, \ldots, n\}$, we assign to each $i \in I$ a nonnegative integer $x_i$, that is a pile of $x_i$ tokens, and consider the following generalization of the classical game of {\sc Nim}: Two players alternate turns. In a move a player chooses an arbitrary edge $H \in \cH$ and reduces all piles $i \in H$. The player who is out of moves loses. We call the obtained game hypergraph {\sc Nim}. Such a game is called proper {\sc Nim}, when $\cH=2^I \setminus\{I,\emptyset\}$ is the family of all proper subsets of $I$. Jenkyns and Mayberry \cite{JM80} described the Sprague-Grundy (or SG in short) function of these games. In this paper we introduce Tetris extensions of hypergraph {\sc Nim}, and obtain a closed formula for the SG functions of the extensions of proper {\sc Nim}, when $n\geq 3$. Surprisingly, the case of $n=2$ is much more complicated. For this case we only suggest several partial results and conjectures.

Abstract:It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi–Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in ${\mathbb{P}^3}$ does not have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.

Abstract:The classic game of Nim has been well-known for many years, inspiring numerous variations. One such variant is Delete Nim, where players take turns eliminating one pile of stones and splitting the remaining pile into two smaller piles. In this paper we generalize the game to include the case of n piles. On each turn, a player eliminates one pile and splits one of the remaining piles into two smaller piles. We specifically analyze the case where n=4, deriving the conditions for a winning strategy.

Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau 3-folds coming from eight planes of $P^3$ in general positions is not modular. In fact we show the stronger statement that the Zariski closure of the monodromy group is actually the whole $Sp(20,R)$. We construct an interesting submoduli, which we call \emph{hyperelliptic locus}, over which the weight 3 $Q$-Hodge structure is the third wedge product of the weight 1 $Q$-Hodge structure on the corresponding hyperelliptic curve. The non-extendibility of the hyperelliptic locus inside the moduli space of a genuine Shimura subvariety is proved.

Abstract:We verify the transcendental part of a conjecture of Campana predicting that the rational points on the weakly-special non-special simply-connected smooth projective threefolds constructed by Bogomolov-Tschinkel are not dense. To prove our result, we establish fundamental properties of moduli spaces of orbifold maps. The crux of the argument relies on a dimension bound for such moduli spaces which relies on a recently established extension of Kobayashi-Ochiai's finiteness theorem to the more general setting of Campana's orbifold pairs.

Abstract:Using obstruction bundles, composition law and the localization formula, we compute certain 3-point genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert scheme of 3-points on the complex projective plane. Our results partially verify Ruan's conjecture about quantum corrections for this Hilbert scheme.

Abstract:Nim is a well-known combinatorial game with several variants, e.g., Delete Nim and Variant Delete Nim. In Variant Delete Nim, the player deletes one of the two heaps of stones and splits the other heap on his/her turn. In this paper, we discuss generalized Variant Delete Nim, which generalizes the number of stone heaps to three or more, All-but-one-delete Nim, Half-delete Nim, No-more-than-half-delete Nim, and Single-delete Nim. We study the win-loss conditions for each of these games.

On Remoteness Functions of Exact Slow $k$-NIM with $k+1$ Piles

Abstract:Given integer $n$ and $k$ such that $0 < k \leq n$ and $n$ piles of stones, two player alternate turns. By one move it is allowed to choose any $k$ piles and remove exactly one stone from each. The player who has to move but cannot is the loser. Cases $k=1$ and $k = n$ are trivial. For $k=2$ the game was solved for $n \leq 6$. For $n \leq 4$ the Sprague-Grundy function was efficiently computed (for both the normal and misère versions). For $n = 5,6$ a polynomial algorithm computing P-positions was obtained. Here we consider the case $2 \leq k = n-1$ and compute Smith's remoteness function, whose even values define the P-positions. In fact, an optimal move is always defined by the following simple rule: if all piles are odd, keep a largest one and reduce all other; if there exist even piles, keep a smallest one of them and reduce all other. Such strategy is optimal for both players, moreover, it allows to win as fast as possible from an N-position and to resist as long as possible from a P-position.

Abstract:Wythoff's Game is a game for two players playing alternately on two stacks of tiles. On her turn, a player can either remove a positive number of tiles from one stack, or remove an equal positive number of tiles from both stacks. The last player to move legally wins the game. We propose and study a new extension of this game to more than two stacks, which we call Twyst-off, inspired by the Reidemeister moves of knot theory. From an ordered sequence of stacks of tiles, a player may either remove a positive number of tiles from one of the two end stacks, or remove the same positive number of tiles from two consecutive stacks. Whenever an interior stack is reduced to 0, the two neighboring stacks are combined. In this paper, we prove several results about those Twyst-off positions that can be won by the second player (these are called P-positions). We prove an existence and uniqueness result that makes the visualization of data on three-stack P-positions possible. This shows that many such positions are symmetric, like the easy general examples (a,a,a) and (a,a+1,a). The main result establishes tight bounds on those three-stack P-positions that are not symmetric. We go on to prove one general structural result for positions with an arbitrary number of stacks. We also prove facts about the game when allowing stacks of infinite size, including classifying all positions with only infinite stacks in sequences of up to six stacks.

Abstract:We build off the game, NimG to create a version named Neighboring Nim. By reducing from Geography, we show that this game is PSPACE-hard. The games created by the reduction share strong similarities with Undirected (Vertex) Geography and regular Nim, both of which are in P. We show how to construct PSPACE-complete versions with nim heaps *1 and *2. This application of graphs can be used as a form of game sum with any games, not only Nim.
