Abstract:We construct an example of a division ring $D$ and a maximal left ideal $M$ in the polynomial ring $D[x,y]$ in two central variables over $D$, such that the intersection $M \cap D[x]$ is not a maximal left ideal in $D[x]$. This resolves a ring-theoretic problem of Amitsur and Small raised in 1978.

Abstract:We study the functional identity $G(x)f(x)=H(x)$ on a division ring $D$, where $f \colon D\to D$ is an additive map and $G(X)\ne 0, H(X)$ are generalized polynomials in the variable $X$ with coefficients in $D$. Precisely, it is proved that either $D$ is finite-dimensional over its center or $f$ is an elementary operator. Applying the result and its consequences, we prove that if $D$ is a noncommutative division ring of characteristic not $2$, then the only solution of additive maps $f, g$ on $D$ satisfying the identity $f(x) = x^n g(x^{-1})$ with $n\ne 2$ a positive integer is the trivial case, that is, $f=0$ and $g=0$. This extends Catalano and Merchán's result in 2023 to get a complete solution.

Maximal subrings of division rings

Abstract:The structure and the existence of maximal subrings in division rings are investigated. We see that if $R$ is a maximal subring of a division ring $D$ with center $F$ and $N(R)\neq U(R)\cup \{0\}$, where $N(R)$ is the normalizer of $R$ in $D$, then either $R$ is a division ring with $[D:R]_l=[D:R]_r$ is finite or $R$ is an Ore $G$-domain with certain properties. In particular, if $F\subsetneq C_D(R)$, the centralizer of $R$ in $D$, then $R=C_D(\beta)$ is a division ring, for each $\beta\in C_R(R)\setminus F$, $[D:R]_l$ is finite if and only if $\beta$ is algebraic over $F$, $[D:R]_l=[D:R]_r=[F[\beta]:F]$ and $C_R(R)=F[\beta]$. On the other hand if $R$ does not contains $F$, then $R\cap F=C_R(R)$ is a maximal subring of $F$. Consequently, if a division ring $D$ has a noncentral element which is algebraic over the center of $D$, then $D$ has a maximal subring. In particular, we prove that if $D$ is a non-commutative division ring with center $F$, then either $D$ has a maximal subring or $dim_F(D)\geq |F|$. We study when a maximal subring of a division ring is a left duo ring or certain valuation rings. Finally, we prove that if $D$ is an existentially complete division ring over a field $K$, then $D$ has a maximal subring of the form $C_D(x)$ where $D$ is finite over it. Moreover, if $R$ is a maximal subring of $D$ with $K\subsetneq C_R(R)$, then $R=C_D(x)$ for some $x\in D\setminus K$, which is algebraic over $K$.

Abstract:The isotrivial Mordell-Lang theorem of Moosa and Scanlon describes the set $X\cap\Gamma$ when $X$ is a subvariety of a semiabelian variety $G$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\Gamma$ is a finitely generated subgroup of $G$ that is invariant under the $q$-power Frobenius endomorphism $F$. That description is here made effective, and extended to arbitrary commutative algebraic groups $G$ and arbitrary finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}[F]$-submodules $\Gamma$. The approach is to use finite automata to give a concrete description of $X\cap \Gamma$. These methods and results have new applications even when specialised to the case when $G$ is an abelian variety over a finite field, $X\subseteq G$ a subvariety defined over a function field $K$, and $\Gamma=G(K)$. As an application of the automata-theoretic approach, a dichotomy theorem is established for the growth of the number of points in $X(K)$ of bounded height. As an application of the effective description of $X\cap\Gamma$, decision procedures are given for the following three diophantine problems: Is $X(K)$ nonempty? Is it infinite? Does it contain an infinite coset?

Abstract:Let $B$ be a reduced local (Noetherian) ring with maximal ideal $M$. Suppose that $B$ contains the rationals, $B/M$ is uncountable and $|B| = |B/M|$. Let the minimal prime ideals of $B$ be partitioned into $m \geq 1$ subcollections $C_1, \ldots ,C_m$. We show that there is a reduced local ring $S \subseteq B$ with maximal ideal $S \cap M$ such that the completion of $S$ with respect to its maximal ideal is isomorphic to the completion of $B$ with respect to its maximal ideal and such that, if $P$ and $Q$ are prime ideals of $B$, then $P \cap S = Q \cap S$ if and only if $P$ and $Q$ are in $C_i$ for some $i = 1,2, \ldots ,m$.

Abstract:We show that the ring of difference polynomials over a difference field does not satisfy the ascending chain condition for mixed difference ideals. This result solves an open problem of difference algebra stated by E. Hrushovski in connection with the development of difference algebraic geometry.

Three surprising instances of dividing

Abstract:We give three counterexamples to the folklore claim that in an arbitrary theory, if a complete type $p$ over a set $B$ does not divide over $C\subseteq B$, then no extension of $p$ to a complete type over $\text{acl}(B)$ divides over $C$. Two of our examples are also the first known theories where all sets are extension bases for nonforking, but forking and dividing differ for complete types (answering a question of Adler). One example is an NSOP$_1$ theory with a complete type that forks, but does not divide, over a model (answering a question of d'Elbée). Moreover, dividing independence fails to imply M-independence in this example (which refutes another folklore claim). In addition to these counterexamples, we summarize various related properties of dividing that are still true. We also address consequences for previous literature, including an earlier unpublished result about forking and dividing in free amalgamation theories, and some claims about dividing in the theory of generic $K_{m,n}$-free incidence structures.

The Eliahou-Kervaire resolution over a skew polynomial ring

Abstract:In a 1987 paper, Eliahou and Kervaire constructed a minimal resolution of a class of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring, called stable ideals. As a consequence of their construction they deduced several homological properties of stable ideals. Furthermore they showed that this resolution admits an associative, graded commutative product that satisfies the Leibniz rule. In this paper we show that their construction can be extended to stable ideals in skew polynomial rings. As a consequence we show that the homological properties of stable ideals proved by Eliahou and Kervaire hold also for stable ideals in skew polynomial rings. Finally we show that the resolution we construct admits a product generalizing the one given by Eliahou and Kervaire in the commutative case.

Abstract:This paper deals with the rings which satisfy DCC d condition. This notion has been introduced recently by R. Dastanpour and A. Ghorbani (2017) as a generalization of Artnian rings. It is of interest to investigate more deeply this class of rings. This study focuses on commutative case. In this vein, we present this work in which we examine the transfer of these rings to the trivial, amalgamation and polynomial ring extensions. We also investigate the relationship between this class of rings and the well known ones. Furthermore, many new results are presented in the scope of this paper. For example, there is one which concerns the decomposition of ideals on prime ones and another which investigate the Krull dimension of the ring satisfying DCC d condition. At the end of this work, we provide a result which concerns the modules over such rings.

Abstract:Let $(Q, \mathfrak{n})$ be a regular local ring and let $f_1, \ldots, f_c \in \mathfrak{n}^2$ be a $Q$-regular sequence. Set $(A, \mathfrak{m}) = (Q/(\mathbf{f}), \mathfrak{n}/(\mathbf{f}))$. Further assume that the initial forms $f_1^*, \ldots, f_c^*$ form a $G(Q) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0}\mathfrak{n}^i/\mathfrak{n}^{i+1}$-regular sequence. Without loss of any generality assume $ord_Q(f_1) \geq ord_Q(f_2) \geq \cdots \geq ord_Q(f_c)$. Let $M$ be a finitely generated $A$-module and let $(\mathbb{F}, \partial)$ be a minimal free resolution of $M$. Then we prove that $ord(\partial_i) \leq ord_Q(f_1) - 1$ for all $i \gg 0$. We also construct an MCM $A$-module $M$ such that $ord(\partial_{2i+1}) = ord_Q(f_1) - 1$ for all $i \geq 0$. We also give a considerably simpler proof regarding the periodicity of ideals of minors of maps in a minimal free resolution of modules over arbitrary complete intersection rings (not necessarily strict).

The Herzog-Takayama resolution over a skew polynomial ring

Abstract:Let $\Bbbk$ be a field, and let $I$ be a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $R=\Bbbk[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. In her thesis, Taylor introduced a complex that provides a finite free resolution of $R/I$ as an $R$-module. Building on this, Ferraro, Martin and Moore extended this construction to monomial ideals in skew polynomial rings. Since the Taylor resolution is generally not minimal, significant effort has been devoted to identifying classes of ideals with minimal free resolutions that are relatively straightforward to construct. In a 1987 paper, Eliahou and Kervaire developed a minimal free resolution for a class of monomial ideals in $R$ known as stable ideals. This result was later generalized to stable ideals in skew polynomial rings by Ferraro and Hardesty. In a 2002 paper, Herzog and Takayama constructed a minimal free resolution for monomial ideals with linear quotients, a broader class of ideals containing stable ideals. Their resolution reduces to the Eliahou-Kervaire resolution in the stable case. In this paper, we generalize the Herzog-Takayama resolution to skew polynomial rings.

Abstract:We address an arithmetic problem in the ring $\F_2[x]$ related to the fixed points of the sum of divisors function. We study some binary polynomials $A$ such that $\sigma(A)/A $ is still a binary polynomial. Technically, we prove that the only (unitary) perfect polynomials over $\F_2$ that are products of $x$, $x+1$ and of Mersenne primes are precisely the nine (resp. nine "classes") known ones. This follows from a new result about the factorization of $M^{2h+1} +1$, for a Mersenne prime $M$ and for a positive integer $h$.

Abstract:In this note we give a short and elementary proof for a part of Amitsur's noncrossed product theorem. Our approach does not rely on well-known results of valuation theory. Instead, we employ some preliminary properties of the unit groups of formal iterated Laurent series division rings.

Abstract:Let $D$ be a noncommutative division ring. In a recent paper, Lee and Lin proved that if $\text{char}\, D\ne 2$, the only solution of additive maps $f, g$ on $D$ satisfying the identity $f(x) = x^n g(x^{-1})$ on $D\setminus \{0\}$ with $n\ne 2$ a positive integer is the trivial case, that is, $f=0$ and $g=0$. Applying Hua's identity and the theory of functional and generalized polynomial identities, we give a complete solution of the same identity for any nonnegative integer $n$ if $\text{char}\, D=2$.

Abstract:The aim of these notes is to study some of the structural aspects of the ring of arithmetical functions. We prove that this ring is neither Noetherian nor Artinian. Furthermore, we construct various types of prime ideals. We also give an example of a semi-prime ideal that is not prime. We show that the ring of arithmetical functions has infinite Krull dimension.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $I$ be an ideal of $R$. The amalgamated duplication of $R$ along $I$ is the subring $R\Join I:=\{(r,r+i)| r\in R, i\in I\}$ of $R\times R$. This paper investigates the extended zero-divisor graph of the amalgamated duplication of $R$ along $I$. The purpose of this work is to study when $\overline{\Gamma}(R\Join I)$ and $\Gamma(R\Join I)$ coincide, to characterize when $\overline{\Gamma}(R\Join I)$ is complete, and to compute the diameter and the girth of $\overline{\Gamma}(R\Join I)$.

Abstract:In this article, we studied the inverse Erdős-Heilbronn problem with the restricted sumset from two components $A$ and $B$ that are not necessarily the same. We give a completely elementary proof for the problem in $\mathbb{Z}$ and some partial results that contributes to the elementary proof of the problem in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, avoiding the usage of the powerful polynomial method and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.

On Fuchs' problem for finitely generated abelian groups: The small torsion case

Abstract:A classical problem, raised by Fuchs in 1960, asks to classify the abelian groups which are groups of units of some rings. In this paper, we consider the case of finitely generated abelian groups, solving Fuchs' problem for such group with the additional assumption that the torsion subgroups are small, for a suitable notion of small related to the Prüfer rank. As a concrete instance, we classify for each $n\ge2$ the realisable groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}^r$. Our tools require an investigation of the adjoint group of suitable radical rings of odd prime power order appearing in the picture, giving conditions under which the additive and adjoint groups are isomorphic. In the last section, we also deal with some groups of order a power of $2$, proving that the groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2^{u}\mathbb{Z}$ are realisable if and only if $0\le u\le 3$ or $2^u+1$ is a Fermat's prime.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a monoid (written multiplicatively). We call $H$ Archimedean if, for all $a, b \in H$ such that $b$ is a non-unit, there is an integer $k \ge 1$ with $b^k \in HaH$; strongly Archimedean if, for each $a \in H$, there is an integer $k \ge 1$ such that $HaH$ contains any product of any $k$ non-units of $H$; and duo if $aH = Ha$ for all $a \in H$. We prove that the ideals of two strongly Archimedean, cancellative, duo monoids make up isomorphic semigroups under the induced operation of setwise multiplication if and only if the monoids themselves are isomorphic up to units; and the same holds upon restriction to finitely generated ideals in Archimedean, cancellative, duo monoids. Then we use the previous results to tackle a new case of a problem of Tamura and Shafer from the late 1960s.
