We use fermionic localization to compute the exact torus partition function for a constant representative coadjoint orbit of $\widehat{\text{BMS}}_3$. This allows us to discuss its 1-loop exactness.

Abstract:We explore three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant via canonical quantization. We focus on chiral gravity which is related to a single copy of Chern-Simons theory and is simpler to treat in canonical quantization. Its phase space for an initial value surface is given by the appropriate moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We use geometric quantization to compute partition functions of chiral gravity on three-manifolds of the form , where can have asymptotic boundaries. Most of these topologies do not admit a classical solution and are thus not amenable to a direct semiclassical path integral computation. We use an index theorem that expresses the partition function as an integral of characteristic classes over phase space. In the presence of n asymptotic boundaries, we use techniques from equivariant cohomology to localize the integral to a finite-dimensional integral over , which we evaluate in low genus cases. Higher genus partition functions quickly become complicated since they depend in an oscillatory way on Newton's constant. There is a precise sense in which one can isolate the non-oscillatory part which we call the fake partition function. We establish that there is a topological recursion that computes the fake partition functions for arbitrary Riemann surfaces . There is a scaling limit in which the model reduces to JT gravity and our methods give a novel way to compute JT partition functions via equivariant localization.

Information measures for fermion localization in $f(T, B)$ gravity with non-minimal couplings

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of fermion localization within the framework of $f(T, B)$ gravity featuring non-minimal couplings. Starting from the Dirac action for a spin-$1/2$ fermion in a five-dimensional spacetime governed by torsional $f(T, B)$ gravity, we derive the Dirac equation and we explore its solutions under various non-minimal coupling functions. We examine two realistic forms of the torsional non-minimal coupling and reveal distinct behaviors that impact the localization of both massless and massive fermionic modes on the brane. Additionally, we employ probabilistic measurements, including Shannon entropy theory, Fisher information theory, and relative probability, to analyze the localization of these fermionic modes. The observed effects offer potential insights into probing torsional modifications.

Abstract:We consider localization of gravity on thick branes with a non trivial structure. Double walls that generalize the thick Randall-Sundrum solution, and asymmetric walls that arise from a Z_2-symmetric scalar potential, are considered. We present a new asymmetric solution: a thick brane interpolating between two AdS_5 spacetimes with different cosmological constants, which can be derived from a ``fake supergravity'' superpotential, and show that it is possible to confine gravity on such branes.

Abstract:We show, by introducing purely auxiliary gluinos and scalars, that the quantum path integral for a class of 3D interacting non-supersymmetric gauge theories localises. The theories in this class all admit a `Manin gauge theory' formulation, that we introduce; it is obtained by enhancing the gauge algebra of the theory to a Dirac structure inside a Manin pair. This machinery allows us to do localisation computations for every theory in this class at once, including for 3D Yang-Mills theory, and for its Third Way deformation; the latter calculation casts the Third Way path integral into an almost 1-loop exact form.

Abstract:We begin to develop the formalism of localization for the functional integral of supergravity on $AdS_3 \times S^2$. We show how the condition of supersymmetry in the Euclidean $\mathbb{H}^3/\mathbb{Z} \times S^2$ geometry naturally leads to a twist of the S$^2$ around the time direction of $AdS_3$. The twist gives us a five-dimensional Euclidean supergravity background dual to the elliptic genus of $(0,4)$ SCFT$_2$ at the semiclassical level. On this background we set up the off-shell BPS equations for one of the Killing spinors, such that the functional integral of five-dimensional Euclidean supergravity on $\mathbb{H}^3/\mathbb{Z} \times S^2$ localizes to its space of solutions. We obtain a class of solutions to these equations by lifting known off-shell BPS solutions of 4-dimensional supergravity on $AdS_2 \times S^2$. In order to do this consistently, we construct and use a Euclidean version of the off-shell 4d/5d lift of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1112.5371" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1112.5371">arXiv:1112.5371</a>, which could be of independent interest.

Abstract:We explain how equivariant localization may be applied to AdS/CFT to compute various BPS observables in gravity, such as central charges and conformal dimensions of chiral primary operators, without solving the supergravity equations. The key ingredient is that supersymmetric AdS solutions with an R-symmetry are equipped with a set of equivariantly closed forms. These may in turn be used to impose flux quantization and compute observables for supergravity solutions, using only topological information and the Berline-Vergne-Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. We illustrate the formalism by considering AdS 5 × M 6 and AdS 3 × M 8 solutions of D = 11 supergravity. As well as recovering results for many classes of well-known supergravity solutions, without using any knowledge of their explicit form, we also compute central charges for which explicit supergravity solutions have not been constructed.

Chiral $Λ$-$\mathfrak{bms}_4$ symmetry of 3d conformal gravity

Abstract:We propose mixed boundary conditions for 3d conformal gravity consistent with variational principle in its second-order formalism that admit the chiral $\Lambda$-$\mathfrak{bms}_4$ algebra as their asymptotic symmetry algebra. This algebra is one of the four chiral $\mathcal W$-algebra extensions of $\mathfrak{so}(2,3)$ and is a generalisation of the chiral $\mathfrak{bms}_4$ algebra responsible for soft theorems of graviton MHV amplitudes in ${\mathbb R}^{1,3}$ gravity to the case of non-zero negative cosmological constant. The corresponding charges calculated using the modified covariant phase space formalism are shown to be finite and integrable, and realise this non-linear ${\cal W}$-algebra.

Abstract:We construct a quantization of the moduli space of maximal globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metrics on with constant sectional curvature , for a punctured surface S . Although this moduli space is known to be symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of S independently of the value of , we define geometrically natural classes of observables leading to -dependent quantizations. Using special coordinate systems, we first view as the set of points of a cluster -variety valued in the ring of generalized complex numbers . We then develop an -version of the quantum theory for cluster -varieties by establishing -versions of the quantum dilogarithm function. As a consequence, we obtain three families of projective unitary representations of the mapping class group of S . For these representations recover those of Fock and Goncharov, while for the representations are new.

More On Pure Gravity with a Negative Cosmological Constant

Abstract:We identify an ambiguity in the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant that originates in an outer automorphism of the Lie algebra sl(2,R). It has important consequences for the stability of the theory in a space-time with boundary. We revisit the classical equivalence of three-dimensional gravity with a boundary Liouville theory both on and off the mass shell. Moreover, we provide further details on the quantum equivalence, the gauge symmetry that renders the spectrum diagonal, as well as the relation between asymptotically AdS3 metrics and polar boundary conditions. We thus set the proposal that the Liouville conformal field theory serves as a definition of a unitary theory of pure gravity in three dimensions with negative cosmological constant on a more stable footing.

Abstract:Application of the supersymmetric localization method to theories on anti-de Sitter spacetime has received recent interest, yet still remains as a challenging problem. In this paper, we focus on (global) Euclidean AdS$_2$, on which we consider an Abelian ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ theory and implement localization computation to obtain the exact partition function. For comparison, we also revisit the theory on S$^2$ and perform a parallel computation. We refine the notion of equivariant supersymmetry and use appropriate functional integration measure. For AdS$_2$ we choose a supersymmetric boundary condition which is compatible with the principle of variation. To evaluate the 1-loop determinant about the localization saddle, we use index theory and fixed point formula, where we pay attention to the effect of zero modes and their superpartners. The existence of fermionic superpartner of 1-form boundary zero modes is proven. Obtaining the 1-loop determinant requires expansion of the index that presents an ambiguity, which we resolve using boundary condition. The resulting partition function reveals an overall dependence on the size of the background manifold, AdS$_2$ as well as S$^2$, as a sum of two types of contributions: a local one from local conformal anomaly through the index computation and a global one coming from zero modes. This overall size dependence is confirmed by the perturbative 1-loop evaluation using heat kernel method.

Abstract:The BMS (Bondi–van der Burg–Metzner–Sachs) symmetry arises as the asymptotic symmetry of flat spacetime at null infinity. In particular, the BMS algebra for three-dimensional flat spacetime ( BMS3 ) is generated by the super-rotation generators that form a Virasoro subalgebra with central charge cL , together with mutually commuting super-translation generators. The super-rotation and supertranslation generators have nontrivial commutation relations with another central charge cM . In this paper, we study a free scalar theory in two dimensions exhibiting BMS3 symmetry, which can also be understood as the ultrarelativistic limit of a free scalar CFT2 in the flipped representation. Upon canonical quantization on the highest weight vacuum, the central charges are found to be cL=2 and cM=0 . Because of the vanishing central charge cM=0 , the theory features novel properties: there exist primary states which form a multiplet, and the Hilbert space can be organized by an enlarged version of BMS modules dubbed the staggered modules. We further calculate correlation functions and the torus partition function, the latter of which is also shown explicitly to be modular invariant. Equivariant localization and gluing rules in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ higher derivative supergravity

Abstract:We complete the proof of the conjecture in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.06903" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.06903">arXiv:2111.06903</a> regarding the form of gravitational building blocks in higher derivative supergravity and examine the related gluing rules. The derivation, based on certain assumptions, combines the BVAB equivariant localization formula (on non-compact spaces) and the direct evaluation of the action on the Omega background in AdS$_4$, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.10590" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.10590">arXiv:2212.10590</a>. Utilizing the superconformal gravity formalism and avoiding equations of motion ensures our results are valid at any perturbative order in the Newton constant. As an application, we illustrate the holographic predictions for supersymmetric M2-brane partition functions. We conclude with a to-do list of related calculations in effective supergravity and string theory, aiming for full quantum control of BPS backgrounds.

Abstract:Abstract With a 4-form ansatz of 11-dimensional supergravity over non-dynamical $AdS_4 \times S^7/Z_k$ background, with the internal space as a $S^1$ Hopf fibration on $CP^3$, we get a consistent truncation. The (pseudo)scalars, in the resulting scalar equations in Euclidean AdS$_4$ space, may be viewed as arising from (anti)M-branes wrapping around internal directions in the (Wick-rotated) skew-whiffed M2-branes background (as the resulting theory is for anti-M2-branes) and so, realizing the modes after swapping the three fundamental representations $\textbf{8}_s$, $\textbf{8}_c$, $\textbf{8}_v$ of $SO(8)$. Taking the backreaction on the external and internal spaces, we get massless and massive modes, corresponding to exactly marginal and marginally irrelevant deformations on the boundary CFT$_3$, and write a closed solution for the bulk equation and compute its correction to the background action. Next, considering the Higgs-like (breathing) mode $m^2=18$, having all supersymmetries, parity and scale-invariance broken, by solving the associated bulk equation with mathematical methods, especially the Adomian decomposition method, and analyzing the behavior near the boundary of the solutions, we realize the boundary duals in $SU(4) \times U(1)$-singlet sectors of the ABJM model. Then, introducing new dual deformation $\Delta_+ = 3, 6$ operators made of bi-fundamental scalars, fermions and $U(1)$ gauge fields, we obtain $SO(4)$-invariant solutions as small instantons on a three-sphere with radius at infinity, which actually correspond to collapsing bulk bubbles leading to big-crunch singularities. Solving 3d Gravity with Virasoro TQFT

Abstract:We propose a precise reformulation of 3d quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of a topological quantum field theory based on the quantization of the Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces that we refer to as ``Virasoro TQFT.'' This TQFT is similar, but importantly not equivalent, to $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory. This sharpens the folklore that 3d gravity is related to $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory into a precise correspondence, and resolves some well-known issues with this lore at the quantum level. Our proposal is computationally very useful and provides a powerful tool for the further study of 3d gravity. In particular, we explain how together with standard TQFT surgery techniques this leads to a fully algorithmic procedure for the computation of the gravity partition function on a fixed topology exactly in the central charge. Mathematically, the relation leads to many nontrivial conjectures for hyperbolic 3-manifolds, Virasoro conformal blocks and crossing kernels.

Abstract:Gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten theory for compact groups is considered. It is shown that this theory has fermionic BRST-like symmetry and may be exactly solved using localization approach. As an example we calculate functional integral for the case of SU(2) group on the arbitrary Riemann surface. The answer is the particular case of Verlinde formula for the number of conformal blocks.

Localized Black Holes in AdS$_3$: What Happens Below c/12 Stays Below c/12

Abstract:We construct asymptotically AdS$_3 \times$S$^3 \times$T$^4$ black holes that are localized on the S$^3$ and co-exist with the BTZ black hole at small positive energies. These black holes dominate the microcanonical ensemble for $ E\leq \frac{c}{24}\left(5\sqrt{5}-11\right)$, suggesting they could represent the endpoint of the BTZ instability at low energies. Remarkably, they also exist at negative energies, where pure Einstein gravity predicts no states and the BTZ black hole does not exist. They appear in the spectrum immediately above $-\frac{c}{12}$ (the energy of global AdS$_3$), and their entropy is a significant fraction (up to 1/2) of the entropy of the free orbifold CFT at negative energies. Our solutions exist in an energy window outside the universal predictable range of the modular bootstrap in large-$c$ CFT$_2$ and, despite their microcanonical dominance, do not dominate in the canonical ensemble. To calculate the holographic entanglement entropy of our solutions, we propose the first recipe that can be applied to arbitrary geometries asymptotic to AdS$_3$ times an internal manifold, and depend non-trivially on its coordinates. We find that our new geometries have an entanglement entropy nearly identical to that of the BTZ black hole with the same energy, despite having different horizon structures. However, they can be distinguished by non-minimal extremal surfaces, which unveil finer details of the microstructure.

Fermion localization on two-field thick branes

Abstract:In a recent paper published in this journal, Almeida and collaborators [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{79}, 125022 (2009)] analyze the issue of fermion localization of fermions on a brane constructed from two scalar fields coupled with gravity (Bloch brane model). In this meritorious research the simplest Yukawa coupling $\eta\bar{\Psi}\phi\chi\Psi$ was considered. In that work does not analyze the zero mode in details. In this paper, the localization of fermions on two-field thick branes is reinvestigated. It is found that the simplest Yukawa coupling does not support the localization of fermions on the brane. In addition, the problem of fermion localization for some other Yukawa couplings are analyzed. It is shown that the zero mode for left-handed and right-handed fermions can be localized on the brane depending on the values for the coupling constant $\eta$ and the Bloch brane's parameter $a$.
