Abstract:In this note we give a criterion for the existence of a fractional-linear integral for a geodesic flow on a Riemannian surface and explain that modulo Möbius transformations the moduli space of such local integrals (if nonempty) is either the two-dimensional projective plane or a finite number of points. We will also consider explicit examples and discuss a relation of such rational integrals to Killing vectors.

Abstract:We introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution to this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. A similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied by Li and Liu (2014).

In this work, metrics admitting nonpolynomial first integrals of the geodesic equation are constructed, each of which revealing a chain of generalised Killing vectors.

Abstract:Motivated by a paper of Bolsinov and Taimanov DG/9911193 we consider non-holonomic situation and exhibit examples of sub-Riemannian metrics with integrable geodesic flows and positive topological entropy. Moreover the Riemannian examples are obtained as "holonomization" of sub-Riemannian ones. A feature of non-holonomic situation is non-compactness of the phase space. We also exhibit a Liouvulle-integrable Hamiltonian system with topological entropy of all integrals positive.

Abstract:We give a new characterisation of the unparametrised geodesics, or distinguished curves, for affine, pseudo-Riemannian, conformal, and projective geometry. This is a type of moving incidence relation. The characterisation is used to provide a very general theory and construction of quantities that are necessarily conserved along the curves. The formalism immediately yields explicit formulae for these curve first integrals. The usual role of Killing tensors and conformal Killing tensors is recovered as a special case, but the construction shows that a significantly larger class of equation solutions also yield curve first integrals. In particular any normal solution to an equation from the class of first BGG equations can yield such a conserved quantity. For some equations the condition of normality is not required. For nowhere-null curves in pseudo-Riemannian and conformal geometry additional results are available. We provide a fundamental tractor-valued invariant of such curves and this quantity is parallel if and only if the curve is an unparametrised conformal circle.

Abstract:We show that if $n$ functionally independent commutative quadratic in momenta integrals for the geodesic flow of a Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian metric on an $n$-dimensional manifold are simultaneously diagonalisable at the tangent space to every point, then they come from the Stäckel construction, so the metric admits orthogonal separation of variables.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to characterize a germ of planar holomorphic vector field at an elementary singular point having a generalized rational first integral. Our results generalize a result due to Poincaré on a necessary condition of the existence of a rational first integral for planar polynomial systems. As two applications of our main result, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of rational first integral for planar quadratic systems having either a weak nondegenerate singular point, or a degenerate elementary singular point.

Abstract:One way to define a sub-Riemannian metric is as the limit of a Riemannian metric. Consider a Riemannian structure depending on a parameter $s$ such that its limit defines a sub-Riemannian metric when $s \to \infty$, assuming that the Riemannian geodesic flow is integrable for all $s$. An interesting question is: Can we determine the integrability of the sub-Riemannian geodesic flow as the limit of the integrals of motion of the Riemannian geodesic flow? The paper's main contribution is to provide a positive answer to this question in the special orthogonal group. Theorem 1.1 states that the Riemannian geodesic flow is Liuville integrable: The Manakov integrals' limit suggests the existence of a Lax pair formulation of the Riemannian geodesic equations, and the proof of Theorem 1.1 relies on this Lax pair.

Abstract:We study Riemannian metrics on 2-surfaces with integrable geodesic flows such that an additional first integral is high-degree polynomial in momenta. This problem reduces to searching for solutions to certain quasi-linear systems of PDEs which turn out to be semi-Hamiltonian. We construct plenty of local explicit and implicit integrable examples with polynomial first integrals of degrees 3, 4, 5. Our construction is essentially based on applying the generalized hodograph method.

Abstract:We obtain new descriptions of the null spaces of several projectively equivalent transforms in integral geometry. The paper deals with the hyperplane Radon transform, the totally geodesic transforms on the sphere and the hyperbolic space, the spherical slice transform, and the Cormack-Quinto spherical mean transform for spheres through the origin. The consideration extends to the corresponding dual transforms and the relevant exterior/interior modifications. The method relies on new results for the Gegenbauer-Chebyshev integrals, which generalize Abel type fractional integrals on the positive half-line.

Abstract:We have established (see Shiohama and Xu in J. Geom. Anal. 7:377–386, 1997; Lemma) an integral formula on the absolute Lipschitz-Killing curvature and critical points of height functions of an isometrically immersed compact Riemannian n-manifold into R n+q. Making use of this formula, we prove a topological sphere theorem and a differentiable sphere theorem for hypersurfaces with bounded L n/2 Ricci curvature norm in R n+1. We show that the theorems of Gauss-Bonnet-Chern, Chern-Lashof and the Willmore inequality are all its consequences.

Abstract:This paper shows that the left-invariant geodesic flow on the symplecticgroup relative to the Frobenius metric is an integrable system that is notcontained in the Mishchenko-Fomenko class of rigid body metrics. This systemmay be expressed as a flow on symmetric matrices and is bi-Hamiltonian. Thisanalysis is extended to cover flows on symmetric matrices when an isomorphismwith the symplectic Lie algebra does not hold. The two Poisson structuresassociated with this system, including an analysis of its Casimirs, arecompletely analyzed. Since the system integrals are not generated by itsCasimirs it is shown that the nature of integrability is fundamentallydifferent from that exhibited in the Mischenko-Fomenko setting.
Complete integrability of subriemannian geodesic flows on $\mathbb{S}^7$

Abstract:Four subriemannian (SR) structures over the Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^7$ are considered in accordance to the previous literature. The defining bracket generating distribution is chosen as the horizontal space in the Hopf fibration, the quaternionic Hopf fibration or spanned by a suitable number of canonical vector fields. In all cases the induced SR geodesic flow on $T^*\mathbb{S}^7$ is studied. Adapting a method by A. Thimm, a maximal set of functionally independent and Poisson commuting first integrals are constructed, including the corresponding SR Hamiltonian. As a result, the complete integrability in the sense of Liouville is proved for the SR geodesic flow. It is observed that these first integrals arise as the symbols of commuting second order differential operators one of them being a (not necessarily intrinsic) sublaplacian. On the way one explicitly derives the Lie algebras of all SR isometry groups intersected with $O(8)$.

Abstract:This work aims to extend part of the two dimensional results of Duplantier and Sheffield on Liouville quantum gravity to four dimensions, and indicate possible extensions to other even-dimensional spaces R^(2n) as well as Riemannian manifolds. Let "\Theta" be the Gaussian free field on R^4 with the underlying Hilbert space being the Sobolev space H^2 witb the inner product determined by the operator (I-\Delta)^2. Assume "\theta" is a generic element from \Theta. We consider a sequence of random Borel measures on R^4, each of which is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure dx and the density function is given by the exponential of a centered Gaussian family parametrized by x in R^4. We show that with probability 1, this sequence of measures weakly converges to a limit random measure which can be "formally" written as "exp(2\gamma\theta(x)dx". In this setting, we also prove a KPZ relation, which is the quadratic relation between the scaling exponent of a bounded Borel set on R^4 under the Lebesgue measure and its counterpart under the random measure obtained above. Our approach is similar to the one used by Duplantier and Sheffield in 2D but with adaptations to R^4.

Abstract:Integrable structures arise in general relativity when the spacetime possesses a pair of commuting Killing vectors admitting 2-spaces orthogonal to the group orbits. The physical interpretation of such spacetimes depends on the norm of the Killing vectors. They include stationary axisymmetric spacetimes, Einstein-Rosen waves with two polarizations, Gowdy models, and colliding plane gravitational waves. We review the general formalism of linear systems with variable spectral parameter, solution generating techniques, and various classes of exact solutions. In the case of the Einstein-Rosen waves, we also discuss the Poisson algebra of charges and its quantization. This is an invited contribution to the 2nd edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics.

Riemannian Geometry to Higher Order in the Infinitesimals

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Abstract:The Riemann-Hilbert approach, in conjunction with the canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation of certain matrix functions called monodromy matrices, enables one to obtain explicit solutions to the non-linear field equations of some gravitational theories. These solutions are encoded in the elements of a matrix M depending on the Weyl coordinates ρ and v , determined by that factorisation. We address here, for the first time, the underlying question of what happens when a canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation does not exist, using the close connection of Wiener-Hopf factorisation with Toeplitz operators to study this question. For the case of rational monodromy matrices, we prove that the non-existence of a canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation determines curves in the ( ρ, v ) plane on which some elements of M ( ρ, v ) tend to infinity, but where the space-time metric may still be well behaved. In the case of uncharged rotating black holes in four space-time dimensions and, for certain choices of coordinates, in five space-time dimensions, we show that these curves correspond to their ergosurfaces.

Abstract:The present study introduces an innovative link between integrable equations and the motion of timelike curves within a three-dimensional Minkowski space. This study aims to establish an anology between the modified generalizations of the Heisenberg spin chain model equation, a complex Korteweg–de Vries equation, and the Ablowitz–Kaup–Newell–Segur hierarchy systems of real type, respectively. This is accomplished through the application of specific functions, which are derived based on the curvatures and torsions of three distinct curves and their corresponding Frenet frames in a 3-dimensional Minkowski space. Making use of this method, the geometric derivation of the integrable equation has been demonstrated with success.
