Abstract:We study the pair interaction on flat tori of functions whose Fourier coefficients are positive and decay sufficiently rapidly. In dimension one we find that the minimizer, up to translation, is the equidistant point set. In dimension two, minimizing with respect to triplets we find that the minimizer is the triangular lattice.

Abstract:We consider minimizers of the N-particle interaction potential energy and briefly review numerical methods used to calculate them. We consider simple pair potentials which are repulsive at short distances and attractive at long distances, focusing on examples which are sums of two powers. The range of powers we look at includes the well-known case of the Lennard-Jones potential, but we are also interested in less singular potentials which are relevant in collective behavior models. We report on results using the software GMIN developed by Wales and collaborators for problems in chemistry. For all cases, this algorithm gives good candidates for the minimizers for relatively low values of the particle number N. This is well-known for potentials similar to Lennard-Jones, but not for the range which is of interest in collective behavior. Standard minimization procedures have been used in the literature in this range, but they are likely to yield stationary states which are not minimizers. We illustrate numerically some properties of the minimizers in 2D, such as lattice structure, Wulff shapes, and the continuous large-N limit for locally integrable (that is, less singular) potentials.

Abstract:Let $E_\alpha \colon \mathcal{W} \to \mathbb{R}$ denote the expectation value of the Hamiltonian of point interaction in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with inverse scattering length $\alpha \in ]0, \infty[$ and consider an energy functional $I_\alpha \colon \mathcal{W} \to \mathbb{R}$ of the form $$ I_\alpha (u) = \frac{1}{2} E_\alpha (u) + T (u), $$ where $T \colon \mathcal{W} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a given nonlinear functional. We propose a set of conditions on $\rho$, $I_\alpha$ and $T$ under which the problem $$ I_\alpha (u) = \inf \left\{I_\alpha (v) : \|v\|_{L^2}^2 = \rho^2\right\}; \quad \|u\|_{L^2}^2 = \rho^2 $$ has a solution. As an application, we prove the existence of ground states with sufficiently small mass $\rho$ for the following nonlinear problems with a point interaction: (i) a Kirchhoff-type equation, (ii) the Schrödinger--Poisson system and (iii) the Schrödinger--Bopp--Podolsky system.

Wasserstein-infinity stability and mean field limit of discrete interaction energy minimizers

Abstract:In this paper we give a quantitative stability result for the discrete interaction energy on the multi-dimensional torus, for the periodic Riesz potential. It states that if the number of particles $N$ is large and the discrete interaction energy is low, then the particle distribution is necessarily close to the uniform distribution (i.e., the continuous energy minimizer) in the Wasserstein-infinity distance. As a consequence, we obtain a quantitative mean field limit of interaction energy minimizers in the Wasserstein-infinity distance. The proof is based on the application of the author's previous joint work with J. Wang on the stability of continuous energy minimizer, together with a new mollification trick for the empirical measure in the case of singular interaction potentials.

Abstract:We solve explicitly a certain minimization problem for probability measures in one dimension involving an interaction energy that arises in the modelling of aggregation phenomena. We show that in a certain regime minimizers are absolutely continuous with an unbounded density, thereby settling a question that was left open in previous works.

Abstract:In this paper, we study minimization problems among Bravais lattices for finite energy per point. We prove that if a function is completely monotonic, then the triangular lattice minimizes energy per particle among Bravais lattices with density fixed for any density. Furthermore we give an example of convex decreasing positive potential for which triangular lattice is not a minimizer for some densities. We use Montgomery method presented in our previous work to prove minimality of triangular lattice among Bravais lattices at high density for some general potentials. Finally we deduce global minimality among all Bravais lattices, i.e. without density constraint, of a triangular lattice for some parameters of Lennard-Jones type potentials and attractive-repulsive Yukawa potentials.
On the existence of minimizing sets for a weakly-repulsive non-local energy

Abstract:We consider a non-local interaction energy over bounded densities of fixed mass $m$. We prove that under certain regularity assumptions on the interaction kernel these energies admit minimizers given by characteristic functions of sets when $m$ is sufficiently small (or even for every $m$, in particular cases). We show that these assumptions are satisfied by particular interaction kernels in power-law form, and give a certain characterization of minimizing sets. Finally, following a recent result of Davies, Lim and McCann, we give sufficient conditions on the interaction kernel so that the minimizer of the energy over probability measures is given by Dirac masses concentrated on the vertices of a regular $(N+1)$-gon of side length 1 in $\mathbb{R}^N$.

On universally optimal lattice phase transitions and energy minimizers of completely monotone potentials

Abstract: We consider the minimizing problem for energy functionals with two types of competing particles and completely monotone potential on a lattice. We prove that the minima of sum of two completely monotone functions among lattices is located exactly on a special curve which is part of the boundary of the fundamental region. We also establish a universal result for square lattice being the optimal in certain interval, which is surprising. Our result establishes the hexagonal-rhombic-square-rectangular transition lattice shapes in many physical and biological system (such as Bose-Einstein condensates and two-component Ginzburg-Landau systems). It turns out, our results also apply to locating the minimizers of sum of two Eisenstein series, which is new in number theory.
Bounds and Limiting Minimizers for a Family of Interaction Energies

Abstract:We study a two parameter family of energy minimization problems for interaction energies $\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta}$ with attractive-repulsive potential $W_{\alpha,\beta}$. We develop a concavity principle, which allows us to provide a lower bound on $\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta}$ if there exist $\beta_0<\beta<\beta_1$ with minimizers of $\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta_0}$ and $\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta_1}$ known. In addition to this, we also derive new conclusions about the limiting behaviour of $\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta}$ for $\beta\approx 2.$ Finally, we describe a method to show that, for certain values of $(\alpha,\beta),$ $\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta}$ cannot be minimized by the uniform distribution over a top-dimensional regular unit simplex. Our results are made possible by two key factors -- recent progress in identifying minimizers of $\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta}$ for a range of $\alpha$ and $\beta$, and an analysis of $\inf\mathcal{E}_{\alpha,\beta}$ as a function on parameter space.

Asymptotics of non-minimizing stationary points of the Ohta-Kawasaki energy and its sharp interface version

Abstract:We study a non-local Cahn-Hilliard energy arising in the study of di-block copolymer melts, often referred to as the Ohta-Kawasaki energy in that context. In this model, two phases appear, which interact via a Coulombic energy. As in our previous work, we focus on the regime where one of the phases has a very small volume fraction, thus creating "droplets" of the minority phase in a "sea" of the majority phase. In this paper, we address the asymptotic behavior of non-minimizing stationary points in dimensions $n \geq 2$ left open by the study of the $\Gamma$-convergence of the energy established in [23]-[24], which provides information only for almost minimizing sequences when $n=2$. In particular, we prove that (asymptotically) stationary points satisfy a force balance condition which implies that the minority phase distributes itself uniformly in the background majority phase. Our proof uses and generalizes the framework of Sandier-Serfaty [36,37], used in the context of stationary points of the Ginzburg-Landau model, to higher dimensions. When $n=2$, using the regularity results obtained in [25], we also are able to conclude that the droplets in the sharp interface energy become asymptotically round when the number of droplets is constrained to be finite and have bounded isoperimetric deficit.

Abstract:We solve explicitly a certain minimization problem for probability measures involving an interaction energy that is repulsive at short distances and attractive at large distances. We complement earlier works by showing that part of the remaining parameter regime all minimizers are uniform distributions on a surface of a sphere, thus showing concentration on a lower dimensional set. Our method of proof uses convexity estimates on hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of characterizing the minimum energy configurations of a finite system of particles interacting between them due to attracting or repulsive forces given by a certain inter molecular potential. We limit ourselves to the cases of three particles arranged in a triangular array and that of four particles in a tetrahedral array. The minimization is constrained to fixed area in the case of the triangular array, and to fixed volume in the tetrahedral case. For a general class of inter molecular potentials we give conditions for the homogeneous configuration (either an equilateral triangle or a regular tetrahedron) of the array to be stable, that is, a minimizer of the potential energy of the system. To determine whether or not there exist other stable states, the system of first order necessary conditions for a minimum is treated as a bifurcation problem with the area or volume variable as the bifurcation parameter. Because of the symmetries present in our problem, we can apply the techniques of equivariant bifurcation theory to show that there exist branches of non--homogeneous solutions bifurcating from the trivial branch of homogeneous solutions at precisely the values of the parameter of area or volume for which the homogeneous configuration changes stability. For the triangular array, we construct numerically the bifurcation diagrams for both a Lennard--Jones and Buckingham potentials. The numerics show that there exist non--homogeneous stable states, multiple stable states for intervals of values of the area parameter, and secondary bifurcations as well.

Regularization of energy-dependent pointlike interactions in 1D quantum mechanics

Abstract:We construct a family of hermitian potentials in 1D quantum mechanics that converges in the zero-range limit to a $\delta$ interaction with an energy-dependent coupling. It falls out of the standard four-parameter family of pointlike interactions in 1D. Such classification was made by requiring the pointlike interaction to be hermitian. But we show that although our Hamiltonian is hermitian for the standard inner product when the range of the potential is finite, it becomes hermitian for a different inner product in the zero-range limit. This inner product attributes a finite probability (and not probability density) for the particle to be exactly located at the position of the potential. Such pointlike interactions can then be used to construct potentials with a finite support with an energy-dependent coupling.

Clearing-out of dipoles for minimisers of 2-dimensional discrete energies with topological singularities

Abstract:A key question in the analysis of discrete models for material defects, such as vortices in spin systems and superconductors or isolated dislocations in metals, is whether information on boundary energy for a domain can be sufficient for controlling the number of defects in the interior. We present a general combinatorial dipole-removal argument for a large class of discrete models including XY systems and screw dislocation models, allowing to prove sharp conditions under which controlled flux and boundary energy guarantee to have minimizers with zero or one charges in the interior. The argument uses the max-flow min-cut theorem in combination with an ad-hoc duality for planar graphs, and is robust with respect to changes of the function defining the interaction energies.

Abstract:We construct a one-dimensional contact interaction ($\epsilon$ potential) which induces the discontinuity of the wave function while keeping its derivative continuous. By combining the $\epsilon$ potential and the Dirac's $\delta$ function, we construct most general one-dimensional contact interactions allowable under the time reversal symmetry. We present some elementary results for the scattering problem which suggest a dual relation between $\delta$ and $\epsilon$ potentials.

More precisely, we deal with the case of attractive/repulsive interactions in two and three dimensions, where the attraction is quadratic and the repulsion is given by an anisotropic variant of the Coulomb potential. Under the sole assumption of strict positivity of the Fourier transform of the interaction potential, we show the existence of a threshold value for the mass above which the minimiser is an ellipsoid, and below which the minimiser does not exist. If, instead, the Fourier transform of the interaction potential is only nonnegative, we show the emergence of a dichotomy: either there exists a threshold value for the mass as in the case above, or the minimiser is an ellipsoid for any positive value of the mass.

Abstract:We consider weakly interacting diffusions on the torus, for multichromatic interaction potentials. We consider interaction potentials that are not H-stable, leading to phase transitions in the mean field limit. We show that the mean field dynamics can exhibit multipeak stationary states, where the number of peaks is related to the number of nonzero Fourier modes of the interaction. We also consider the effect of a confining potential on the structure of non-uniform steady states. We approach the problem by means of analysis, perturbation theory and numerical simulations for the interacting particle systems and the PDEs.

Abstract:We re-investigate the entire family of many center point interaction Hamiltonians. Under the assumption of exchange symmetry with respect to the point positions, we show that a large sub- family of point interaction Hamiltonian operators does not become either singular or trivial when the positions of two or more scattering centers tend to coincide. In this sense, they appear to be renormalized by default as opposed to the point interaction Hamiltonians usually considered in the literature. Functions in their domains satisfy regularized boundary conditions which turn out to be very similar to the ones proposed recently in many-body quantum mechanics to define three-particle system Hamiltonians with contact interactions bounded from below. In the two-center case, we study the behavior of the negative eigenvalues as a function of the center distance. The result is used to analyze a formal Born-Oppenheimer approximation of a three- particle system with two heavy bosons and one light particle. We demonstrate that this simplified model describes a stable system (no "fall to the center" problem is present). Furthermore, in the unitary limit, the energy spectrum is characterized by an infinite sequence of negative energy eigenvalues accumulating at zero according to the geometrical Efimov law.

Abstract:In this paper we characterise the minimisers of a one-parameter family of nonlocal and anisotropic energies $I_\alpha$ defined on probability measures in $\R^n$, with $n\geq 3$. The energy $I_\alpha$ consists of a purely nonlocal term of convolution type, whose interaction kernel reduces to the Coulomb potential for $\alpha=0$ and is anisotropic otherwise, and a quadratic confinement. The two-dimensional case arises in the study of defects in metals and has been solved by the authors by means of complex-analysis techniques. We prove that for $\alpha\in (-1, n-2]$, the minimiser of $I_\alpha$ is unique and is the (normalised) characteristic function of a spheroid. This result is a paradigmatic example of the role of the anisotropy of the kernel on the shape of minimisers. In particular, the phenomenon of loss of dimensionality, observed in dimension $n=2$, does not occur in higher dimension at the value $\alpha=n-2$ corresponding to the sign change of the Fourier transform of the interaction potential.

Energy Scaling and Asymptotic Properties of One-Dimensional Discrete System with Generalized Lennard--Jones $(m,n)$ Interaction

Abstract:It is well known that elastic effects can cause surface instability. In this paper, we analyze a one-dimensional discrete system which can reveal pattern formation mechanism resembling the "step-bunching" phenomena for epitaxial growth on vicinal surfaces. The surface steps are subject to long-range pairwise interactions taking the form of a general Lennard--Jones (LJ) type potential. It is characterized by two exponents $m$ and $n$ describing the singular and decaying behaviors of the interacting potential at small and large distances, and henceforth are called generalized LJ $(m,n)$ potential. We provide a systematic analysis of the asymptotic properties of the step configurations and the value of the minimum energy, in particular, their dependence on $m$ and $n$ and an additional parameter $\alpha$ indicating the interaction range. Our results show that there is a phase transition between the bunching and non-bunching regimes. Moreover, some of our statements are applicable for any critical points of the energy, not necessarily minimizers. This work extends the technique and results of [Luo et al, SIAM MMS, 2016] which concentrates on the case of LJ (0,2) potential (originated from the elastic force monopole and dipole interactions between the steps). As a by-product, our result also leads to the well-known fact that the classical LJ (6,12) potential does not demonstrate step-bunching type phenomena.
