Abstract:In this article we present two new algorithms to compute the Groebner basis of an ideal that is invariant under certain permutations of the ring variables and which are both implemented in SINGULAR (cf. [DGPS12]). The first and major algorithm is most performant over finite fields whereas the second algorithm is a probabilistic modification of the modular computation of Groebner bases based on the articles by Arnold (cf. [A03]), Idrees, Pfister, Steidel (cf. [IPS11]) and Noro, Yokoyama (cf. [NY12], [Y12]). In fact, the first algorithm that mainly uses the given symmetry, improves the necessary modular calculations in positive characteristic in the second algorithm. Particularly, we could, for the first time even though probabilistic, compute the Groebner basis of the famous ideal of cyclic 9-roots (cf. [BF91]) over the rationals with SINGULAR.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a complex classical group, and let $V$ be its defining representation (possibly plus a copy of the dual). A foundational problem in classical invariant theory is to write down generators and relations for the ring of $G$-invariant polynomial functions on the space $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ of degree-$m$ homogeneous polynomial functions on $V$. In this paper, we replace $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ with the full polynomial algebra $\mathcal{P}(V)$. As a result, the invariant ring is no longer finitely generated. Hence instead of seeking generators, we aim to write down linear bases for bigraded components. Indeed, when $G$ is of sufficiently high rank, we realize these bases as sets of graphs with prescribed number of vertices and edges. When the rank of $G$ is small, there arise complicated linear dependencies among the graphs, but we remedy this setback via representation theory: in particular, we determine the dimension of an arbitrary component in terms of branching multiplicities from the general linear group to the symmetric group. We thereby obtain an expression for the bigraded Hilbert series of the ring of invariants on $\mathcal{P}(V)$. We conclude with examples using our graphical notation, several of which recover classical results.

Abstract:The irreducible characters of the symmetric group are a symmetric polynomial in the eigenvalues of a permutation matrix. They can therefore be realized as a symmetric function that can be evaluated at a set of variables and form a basis of the symmetric functions. This basis of the symmetric functions is of non-homogeneous degree and the (outer) product structure coefficients are the stable Kronecker coefficients. We introduce the irreducible character basis by defining it in terms of the induced trivial characters of the symmetric group which also form a basis of the symmetric functions. The irreducible character basis is closely related to character polynomials and we obtain some of the change of basis coefficients by making this connection explicit. Other change of basis coefficients come from a representation theoretic connection with the partition algebra, and still others are derived by developing combinatorial expressions. This document is an extended abstract which can be used as a review reference so that this basis can be implemented in Sage. Abstract:Let C be a commutative noetherian domain, G be a finitely generated abelian group which acts on C and be the skew group ring. For a prime ideal I◁C, we study the largest subring of B in which the right ideal IB becomes a two-sided ideal - the idealiser subring. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for when this idealiser subring is left and right noetherian. We also give an example of these conditions in practice which translates to an interesting number theoretic problem.

Abstract:Principal symmetric ideals were recently introduced by Harada, Seceleanu, and Sega, with a focus on their homological properties. They are ideals generated by the orbit of a single polynomial under permutations of variables in a polynomial ring. In this paper we seek to determine when a product of two principal symmetric ideals is principal symmetric and when all the powers of a principal symmetric ideal are again principal symmetric ideals. We characterize the ideals that have the latter property as being generated by polynomials invariant up to a scalar multiple under permutation of variables. Recognizing principal symmetric ideals is an open question for the purpose of which we produce certain obstructions. We also demonstrate that the Hilbert functions of symmetric monomial ideals are not all given by symmetric monomial ideals, in contrast to the non-symmetric case.

On maximally symmetric subalgebras

Abstract:Let $\k$ be a characteristic zero PID, $S$ be a $\k$-algebra and $T\subseteq S$ be a full rank subalgebra. Suppose the algebra $T$ is symmetric. It is important to know when $T$ is a {\em maximal symmetric subalgebra} of $S$, i.e. no $\k$-subalgebra $C$ satisfying $T\subsetneq C\subseteq S$ is symmetric. In this note we establish a useful sufficient condition for this using a notion of a quasi-unit of an algebra. This condition is used to obtain an old and a new results on maximal symmetricity for generalized Schur algebras corresponding to certain Brauer tree algebras. The old result was used in our work with Evseev on RoCK blocks of symmetric groups. The new result will be used in our forthcoming work on RoCK blocks of double covers of symmetric groups.

Abstract:An irredundant base of a group G acting faithfully on a finite set Γ is a sequence of points in Γ that produces a strictly descending chain of pointwise stabiliser subgroups in G , terminating at the trivial subgroup. Suppose that G is Sn or An acting primitively on Γ , and that the point stabiliser is primitive in its natural action on n points. We prove that the maximum size of an irredundant base of G is On , and in most cases O(logn)2 . We also show that these bounds are best possible.

Abstract:Abstract We study a class of combinatorially defined polynomial ideals that are generated by minors of a generic symmetric matrix. Included within this class are the symmetric determinantal ideals, the symmetric ladder determinantal ideals, and the symmetric Schubert determinantal ideals of A. Fink, J. Rajchgot, and S. Sullivant. Each ideal in our class is a type C analog of a Kazhdan–Lusztig ideal of A. Woo and A. Yong; that is, it is the scheme‐theoretic defining ideal of the intersection of a type C Schubert variety with a type C opposite Schubert cell, appropriately coordinatized. The Kazhdan–Lusztig ideals that arise are exactly those where the opposite cell is 123‐avoiding. Our main results include Gröbner bases for these ideals, prime decompositions of their initial ideals (which are Stanley–Reisner ideals of subword complexes), and combinatorial formulas for their multigraded Hilbert series in terms of pipe dreams.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group, then all irreducible complex representations of $G$ by be realized over the real numbers if and only if every element of $G$ may be written as a product of two involutions in $G$. This follows from our result that if $q$ is a power of $2$, then all irreducible complex representations of the orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be realized over the real numbers. We also obtain generating functions for the sums of degrees of several sets of unipotent characters of finite orthogonal groups, and we obtain a twisted version of our main result for a broad family of finite classical groups.

Coordinate rings on symmetric spaces

Abstract:Let $G_k$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of char $\neq 2$. Let $\theta_k$ be an algebraic group involution of $G_k$ and denote the fixed point subgroup by $K_k$. We construct an integral model for the symmetric space $K_k \backslash G_k$ with a natural action of the Chevalley group scheme over integers. We show the coordinate ring $k[K_k \backslash G_k]$ admits a canonical basis, as well as a good filtration as a $G_k$-module. We also construct a canonical basis and an integral form for the space of $K_k$-biinvariant functions on $k[G_k]$. Our results rely on the construction of quantized coordinate algebras of symmetric spaces, using the theory of canonical bases on quantum symmetric pairs.

Abstract:We obtain several fundamental results on finite index ideals and additive subgroups of rings as well as on model-theoretic connected components of rings, which concern generating in finitely many steps inside additive groups of rings.Let R be any ring equipped with an arbitrary additional first order structure, and A a set of parameters. We show that whenever H is an A-definable, finite index subgroup of (R,+), then H+R⋅H contains an A-definable, two-sided ideal of finite index. As a corollary, we obtain a positive answer to Question 4.9 of [4]: if R is unital, then (R¯,+)A00+R¯⋅(R¯,+)A00+R¯⋅(R¯,+)A00=R¯A00, which also implies that R¯A00=R¯A000, where R¯≻R is a sufficiently saturated elementary extension of R, (R¯,+)A00 [resp. R¯A00] denotes the smallest A-type-definable, bounded index additive subgroup [resp. ideal] of R¯, and R¯A000 is the smallest invariant over A, bounded index ideal of R¯. If R is of positive characteristic (not necessarily unital), we get a sharper result: (R¯,+)A00+R¯⋅(R¯,+)A00=R¯A00. We obtain a similar result (but with more steps required) for finitely generated (not necessarily unital) rings. We obtain analogous results for topological rings. The above result for unital rings implies that the simplified descriptions of the definable (and so also classical) Bohr compactifications of triangular groups over unital rings obtained in Corollary 4.5 of [4] are valid for all unital rings.We also analyze many concrete examples, where we compute the number of steps needed to generate a group by (R¯∪{1})⋅(R¯,+)A00 and study related aspects, showing "optimality" of some of our main results and yielding answers to some natural questions.

Abstract:In the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, Sym, the basis of Schur functions is distinguished since every Schur function is isomorphic to an irreducible character of a symmetric group under the Frobenius characteristic map. In this note we show that in the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, Nsym, of which Sym is a quotient, the recently discovered basis of noncommutative Schur functions exhibits that every noncommutative Schur function is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group when working in noncommutative character theory. We simultaneously show that a second basis of Nsym consisting of Young noncommutative Schur functions also satisfies that every element is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group.

Abstract:In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra over a field K that are not in the ideal itself with Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset . We then derive some algebraic propositions of -graded rings (a natural generalization of the usual -grading where is a monoid) that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, in relation to a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals, and we deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles.

Abstract:We prove conditions ensuring that a Lie ideal or an invariant additive subgroup in a ring contains all additive commutators. A crucial assumption is that the subgroup is fully noncentral, that is, its image in every quotient is noncentral. For a unital algebra over a field of characteristic $\neq 2$ where every additive commutator is a sum of square-zero elements, we show that a fully noncentral subspace is a Lie ideal if and only if it is invariant under all inner automorphisms. This applies in particular to zero-product balanced algebras.

Abstract:Gauss and Dedekind have shown a bijection between the set of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of primitive positive definite binary quadratic $\mathbb{Z}$-forms of the discriminant of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\Delta<0})$ and the class group of its ring of integers. Using étale cohomology we show an analogue of this correspondence in the positive characteristic. This leads to the description of the set of genera and to another result analogous to Gauss' one by which any form composed with itself belongs to the principal genus.

Abstract:A symmetric ideal is an ideal in a polynomial ring which is stable under all permutations of the variables. In this paper we initiate a global study of zero-dimensional symmetric ideals. By this we mean a geometric study of the invariant Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ parametrizing symmetric subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose coordinate rings, as $S_n$-modules, are isomorphic to a given representation $\rho$. In the case that $\rho = M^\lambda$ is a permutation module corresponding to certain special types of partitions $\lambda$ of $n$, we prove that $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is irreducible or even smooth. We also prove irreducibility whenever $\dim \rho \leq 2n$ and the invariant Hilbert scheme is non-empty. In this same range, we classify all homogeneous symmetric ideals and decide which of these define singular points of $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. A central tool is the combinatorial theory of higher Specht polynomials.

Possible Cardinalities of Maximal Abelian Subgroups of Quotients of Permutation Groups of the Integers

Abstract:The maximality of Abelian subgroups play a role in various parts of group theory. For example, Mycielski has extended a classical result of Lie groups and shown that a maximal Abelian subgroup of a compact connected group is connected and, furthermore, all the maximal Abelian subgroups are conjugate. For finite symmetric groups the question of the size of maximal Abelian subgroups has been examined by Burns and Goldsmith in 1989 and Winkler in 1993. We show that there is not much interest in generalizing this study to infinite symmetric groups; the cardinality of any maximal Abelian subgroup of the symmetric group of the integers is 2^{aleph_0}. Our purpose is also to examine the size of maximal Abelian subgroups for a class of groups closely related to the the symmetric group of the integers; these arise by taking an ideal on the integers, considering the subgroup of all permutations which respect the ideal and then taking the quotient by the normal subgroup of permutations which fix all integers except a set in the ideal. We prove that the maximal size of Abelian subgroups in such groups is sensitive to the nature of the ideal as well as various set theoretic hypotheses.
