Abstract:We control the number of critical points of a height function arising from the Nash isometric embedding of a compact Riemannian n -manifold M . The L n/2 curvature norm ∥ R ∥ and a similar scalar ∥ R ∥ are introduced and their integral R(M) and R(M) over M . We prove that R(M) is bounded below by a constant depending only on n and the Betti numbers of M . Thus a new sphere theorem is proved by eliminating all i th Betti numbers for i = 1, .… n −1. The emphasis is that our sphere theorem imposes no restriction on the range of curvature.

Lower and upper bounds for configurations of points on a sphere

Abstract:We present a new proof (based on spectral decomposition) of a bound originally proved by Sidelnikov~\, for the frame potentials $\sum_{ij} \left( {\bf P}_i \cdot {\bf P}_j \right)^\ell $ on a unit--sphere in $d$ dimensions. Sidelnikov's bound is a special case of the lower bound for the weighted sums $\sum_{ij} f_i f_j \left( {\bf P}_i \cdot {\bf P}_j \right)^\ell$, where $f_i>0$ are scalar quantities associated to each point on the sphere, which we also prove using spectral decomposition. Moreover, in three dimensions, again using spectral decomposition, we find a sharp upper bound for $\sum_{ijk}^N \left[ \left( {\bf P}_i \times {\bf P}_j\right) \cdot {\bf P}_k \right]^2$. We explore two applications of these bounds: first, we examine configurations of points corresponding to the local minima of the Thomson problem for $N=972$; second, we analyze various distributions of points within a three-dimensional volume, where a suitable weighted sum is defined to satisfy a specific bound.

Abstract:In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley. A key feature of our theory is the ability to accomodate topological as well as combinatorial restrictions. We illustrate this by providing several simplicial isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities.

Quantitative upper bounds on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres

Abstract:The Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric spaces measures how far the spaces are from being isometric. It has played an important and longstanding role in geometry and shape comparison. More recently, it has been discovered that the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between unit spheres equipped with the geodesic metric has important connections to Borsuk-Ulam theorems and Vietoris-Rips complexes. We develop a discrete framework for obtaining upper bounds on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres, and provide the first quantitative bounds that apply to spheres of all possible pairs of dimensions. As a special case, we determine the exact Gromov-Hausdorff distance between the circle and any higher-dimensional sphere, and determine the precise asymptotic behavior of the distance from the 2-sphere to the $k$-sphere up to constants.

Abstract:For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2pi$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2pi$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spherical tiling, the area of the associated spherical polyhedral surface with the curvature bounded below by 1 is at most $4pi - epsilon_0$ for some $epsilon_0 u003e 0$. That is, we obtain a definite gap between the area of such a surface and that of the unit sphere.
On the Diameter of a 2-Sum of Polyhedra

Abstract:The study of the combinatorial diameter of a polyhedron is a classical topic in linear-programming theory due to its close connection with the possibility of a polynomial simplex-method pivot rule. The 2-sum operation is a classical operation for graphs, matrices, and matroids; we extend this definition to polyhedra. We analyze the diameters of 2-sum polyhedra, which are those polyhedra that arise from this operation. These polyhedra appear in matroid and integer-programming theory as a natural way to link two systems in a joint model with a single shared constraint and the 2-sum also appears as a key operation in Seymour's decomposition theorem for totally-unimodular matrices. We show that the diameter of a 2-sum polyhedron is quadratic in the diameters of its summands. The methods transfer to a linear bound for the addition of a unit column to an equality system, or equivalently, to the relaxation of an equality constraint to an inequality constraint. Further, we use our methods to analyze the distance between vertices on certain faces of a 3-sum polyhedron.

A conditional lower bound for the Turán number of spheres

Abstract:We consider the hypergraph Turán problem of determining $\mathrm{ex}(n, S^d)$, the maximum number of facets in a $d$-dimensional simplicial complex on $n$ vertices that does not contain a simplicial $d$-sphere (a homeomorph of $S^d$) as a subcomplex. We show that if there is an affirmative answer to a question of Gromov about sphere enumeration in high dimensions, then $\mathrm{ex}(n, S^d) \geq \Omega(n^{d + 1 - (d + 1)/(2^{d + 1} - 2)})$. Furthermore, this lower bound holds unconditionally for 2-LC spheres, which includes all shellable spheres and therefore all polytopes. We also prove an upper bound on $\mathrm{ex}(n, S^d)$ of $O(n^{d + 1 - 1/2^{d - 1}})$ using a simple induction argument. We conjecture that the upper bound can be improved to match the conditional lower bound.

Abstract:We give theorems that can be used to upper bound the densities of packings of different spherical caps in the unit sphere and of translates of different convex bodies in Euclidean space. These theorems extend the linear programming bounds for packings of spherical caps and of convex bodies through the use of semidefinite programming. We perform explicit computations, obtaining new bounds for packings of spherical caps of two different sizes and for binary sphere packings. We also slightly improve bounds for the classical problem of packing identical spheres.

Abstract:We consider a flat metric with conical singularities on the sphere. Assuming no partial sum of angle defects is equal to $2\pi$, we draw on the geometry of immersed disks to obtain an explicit upper bound on the number of saddle connections with at most $k$ self-intersections. We also deduce a bound on their lengths for a surface with a normalized area.

Abstract:A spherical polyhedral surface is a triangulated surface obtained by isometric gluing of spherical triangles. For instance, the boundary of a generic convex polytope in the 3-sphere is a spherical polyhedral surface. This paper investigates these surfaces from the point of view of inner angles. A rigidity result is obtained. A characterization of spherical polyhedral surfaces in terms of the triangulation and the angle assignment is established.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a convex $d$-polytope and $0 \leq k \leq d-1$. In 2023, this author proved the following inequalities, resolving a question of Bárány: \[ \frac{f_k(P)}{f_0(P)} \geq \frac{1}{2}\biggl[{\lceil \frac{d}{2} \rceil \choose k} + {\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor \choose k}\biggr], \qquad \frac{f_k(P)}{f_{d-1}(P)} \geq \frac{1}{2}\biggl[{\lceil \frac{d}{2} \rceil \choose d-k-1} + {\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor \choose d-k-1}\biggr]. \] We show that for any fixed $d$ and $k$, these are the tightest possible linear bounds on $f_k(P)$ in terms of $f_0(P)$ or $f_{d-1}(P)$. We then give a stronger bound on $f_k(P)$ in terms of the Grassmann angle sum $\gamma_k^2(P)$. Finally, we prove an identity relating the face numbers of a polytope with the behavior of its facets under a fixed orthogonal projection of codimension two.

Abstract:We prove new upper and lower bounds on transversal numbers of several classes of simplicial complexes. Specifically, we establish an upper bound on the transversal numbers of pure simplicial complexes in terms of the number of vertices and the number of facets, and then provide constructions of pure simplicial complexes whose transversal numbers come close to this bound. We introduce a new family of $d$-dimensional polytopes that could be considered as ''siblings'' of cyclic polytopes and show that the transversal ratios of such odd-dimensional polytopes are $2/5-o(1)$. The previous record for the transversal ratios of $(2k+1)$-polytopes was $1/(k+1)$. Finally, we construct infinite families of $3$-, $4$-, and $5$-dimensional simplicial spheres with transversal ratios converging to $5/8$, $1/2$, and $6/11$, respectively. The previous record was $11/21$, $2/5$, and $1/2$, respectively.

Abstract:This paper provides new bounds on the size of spheres in any coordinate-additive metric with a particular focus on improving existing bounds in the sum-rank metric. We derive improved upper and lower bounds based on the entropy of a distribution related to the Boltzmann distribution, which work for any coordinate-additive metric. Additionally, we derive new closed-form upper and lower bounds specifically for the sum-rank metric that outperform existing closed-form bounds.

Abstract:In this paper, we estimate areas of compact minimal rotational hypersurfaces in the unit sphere. A sharper lower bound and upper bound on areas of these hypersurfaces are given. As applications, we confirm two conjectures, one in Perdomo and Wei (Nonlinear Anal 125:241–250, 2015), another in Cheng et al (Asian J Math 25:183–194, 2021) and give estimations of entropies of some special self-shrinkers.

Abstract:A very fundamental geometric problem on finite systems of spheres was independently phrased by Kneser (1955) and Poulsen (1954). According to their well-known conjecture if a finite set of balls in Euclidean space is repositioned so that the distance between the centers of every pair of balls is decreased, then the volume of the union (resp., intersection) of the balls is decreased (resp., increased). In the first half of this paper we survey the state of the art of the Kneser-Poulsen conjecture in Euclidean, spherical as well as hyperbolic spaces with the emphases being on the Euclidean case. Based on that it seems very natural and important to study the geometry of intersections of finitely many congruent balls from the viewpoint of discrete geometry in Euclidean space. We call these sets ball-polyhedra. In the second half of this paper we survey a selection of fundamental results known on ball-polyhedra. Besides the obvious survey character of this paper we want to emphasize our definite intention to raise quite a number of open problems to motivate further research.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a geometrical inequality which states that for any four points on a hemisphere with the unit radius, the largest sum of distances between the points is 4+4*sqrt(2). In our method, we have constructed a rectangular neighborhood of the local maximum point in the feasible set, which size is explicitly determined, and proved that (1): the objective function is bounded by a quadratic polynomial which takes the local maximum point as the unique critical point in the neighborhood, and (2): the rest part of the feasible set can be partitioned into a finite union of a large number of very small cubes so that on each small cube the conjecture can be verified by estimating the objective function with exact numerical computation.

Abstract:We prove sphere packing density bounds in hyperbolic space (and more generally irreducible symmetric spaces of noncompact type), which were conjectured by Cohn and Zhao and generalize Euclidean bounds by Cohn and Elkies. We work within the Bowen-Radin framework of packing density and replace the use of the Poisson summation formula in the proof of the Euclidean bound by Cohn and Elkies with an analogous formula arising from methods used in the theory of mathematical quasicrystals.

Abstract:We prove upper bounds on the graph diameters of polytopes in two settings. The first is a worst-case bound for polytopes defined by integer constraints in terms of the height of the integers and certain subdeterminants of the constraint matrix, which in some cases improves previously known results. The second is a smoothed analysis bound: given an appropriately normalized polytope, we add small Gaussian noise to each constraint. We consider a natural geometric measure on the vertices of the perturbed polytope (corresponding to the mean curvature measure of its polar) and show that with high probability there exists a "giant component" of vertices, with measure and polynomial diameter. Both bounds rely on spectral gaps—of a certain Schrödinger operator in the first case, and a certain continuous time Markov chain in the second—which arise from the log-concavity of the volume of a simple polytope in terms of its slack variables.
