Abstract:Buchweitz-Greuel-Schreyer conjectured in 1987 a lower bound on the ranks of matrix factorizations over certain local hypersurface rings. We study a graded version of this conjecture, and we show that it implies a novel conjecture concerning the cohomology of sheaves over non-Fano projective hypersurfaces.

Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.
Fano foliations with small algebraic ranks

Abstract:In this paper we study the algebraic ranks of foliations on $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial normal projective varieties. We start by establishing a Kobayashi-Ochiai's theorem for Fano foliations in terms of algebraic rank. We then investigate the local positivity of the anti-canonical divisors of foliations, obtaining a lower bound for the algebraic rank of a foliation in terms of Seshadri constant. We describe those foliations whose algebraic rank slightly exceeds this bound and classify Fano foliations on smooth projective varieties attaining this bound. Finally we construct several examples to illustrate the general situation, which in particular allow us to answer a question asked by Araujo and Druel on the generalised indices of foliations.

Abstract:Motivated by his work on the stable rank filtration of algebraic K-theory spectra, Rognes defined a simplicial complex called the common basis complex and conjectured that this complex is highly connected for local rings and Euclidean domains. We prove this conjecture in the case of fields. Our methods give a novel description of this common basis complex of a PID as an iterated bar construction on an equivariant monoid built out of Tits buildings. We also identify the Koszul dual of a certain equivariant ring assembled out of Steinberg modules.

Abstract:We prove some new instances of a conjecture of Bachoc, Couvreur and Zémor that generalizes Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem to a multiplicative version in a function field setting. As a consequence we find that if $F$ is a rational function field over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $S \subset F$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space such that $\dim S^2 = 2\dim S + 1$, then the conjecture holds.

Local cohomology with support in Schubert varieties

Abstract:This paper is concerned with local cohomology sheaves on generalized flag varieties supported in closed Schubert varieties, which carry natural structures as (mixed Hodge) D-modules. We employ Kazhdan--Lusztig theory and Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules to describe a general strategy to calculate the simple composition factors, Hodge filtration, and weight filtration on these modules. Our main tool is the Grothendieck--Cousin complex, introduced by Kempf, which allows us to relate the local cohomology modules in question to parabolic Verma modules over the corresponding Lie algebra. We show that this complex underlies a complex of mixed Hodge modules, and is thus endowed with Hodge and weight filtrations. As a consequence, strictness implies that computing cohomology commutes with taking associated graded with respect to both of these filtrations. We execute this strategy to calculate the composition factors and weight filtration for Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian, in particular showing that the weight filtration is controlled by the augmented Dyck patterns of Raicu--Weyman. As an application, upon restriction to the opposite big cell, we recover the simple composition factors and weight filtration on local cohomology with support in generic determinantal varieties.

Abstract:Generalizing the continuous rank function of Barja-Pardini-Stoppino, in this paper we consider cohomological rank functions of Q-twisted (complexes of) coherent sheaves on abelian varieties. They satisfy a natural transformation formula with respect to the Fourier-Mukai-Poincare transform, which has several consequences. In many concrete geometric contexts these functions provide useful invariants.We illustrate this with two different applications, the first one to GV-subschemes and the second one to multiplication maps of global sections of ample line bundles on abelian varieties.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{L}$ denote the $\mathbf{Q}$-vector space of logarithms of algebraic numbers. In this expository work, we provide an introduction to the study of ranks of matrices with coefficients in $\mathscr{L}$. We begin by considering a slightly different question, namely we present a proof of a weak form of Baker's Theorem. This states that a collection of elements of $\mathscr{L}$ that is linearly independent over $\mathbf{Q}$ is in fact linear independent over $\overline{\mathbf{Q}}$. Next we recall Schanuel's Conjecture and prove Ax's analogue of it over $\mathbf{C}((t))$. We then consider arbitrary matrices with coefficients in $\mathscr{L}$ and state the Structural Rank Conjecture, which gives a conjecture for the rank of a general matrix with coefficients in $\mathscr{L}$. We prove the theorem of Waldschmidt and Masser, which provides a lower bound giving a partial result toward the Structural Rank Conjecture. We conclude by stating a new conjecture that we call the Matrix Coefficient Conjecture, which gives a necessary condition for a square matrix with coefficients in $\mathscr{L}$ to be singular.

Bounds on cohomological support varieties

Abstract:Over a local ring $R$, the theory of cohomological support varieties attaches to any bounded complex $M$ of finitely generated $R$-modules an algebraic variety $V_R(M)$ that encodes homological properties of $M$. We give lower bounds for the dimension of $V_R(M)$ in terms of classical invariants of $R$. In particular, when $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay and not complete intersection we find that there are always varieties that cannot be realized as the cohomological support of any complex. When $M$ has finite projective dimension, we also give an upper bound for $ \dim V_R(M)$ in terms of the dimension of the radical of the homotopy Lie algebra of $R$. This leads to an improvement of a bound due to Avramov, Buchweitz, Iyengar, and Miller on the Loewy lengths of finite free complexes. Finally, we completely classify the varieties that can occur as the cohomological support of a complex over a Golod ring.

Higher rank flag sheaves on Surfaces and Vafa-Witten invariants

Abstract: We study moduli space of holomorphic triples $E_{1}\xrightarrow{\phi} E_{2}$, composed of torsion-free sheaves $E_{i}, i=1,2$ and a holomorphic mophism between them, over a smooth complex projective surface $S$. The triples are equipped with Schmitt stability condition [Alg Rep Th. 6. 1. pp 1-32, 2003]. We observe that when Schmitt stability parameter $q(m)$ becomes sufficiently large, the moduli space of triples benefits from having a perfect relative and absolute deformation-obstruction theory in some cases. We further generalize our construction by gluing triple moduli spaces, and extend the earlier work of Gholampour-Sheshmani-Yau [arXiv:1701.08899] where the obstruction theory of nested Hilbert schemes over the surface was studied. Here we extend the earlier results to the moduli space of chains$$E_{1}\xrightarrow{\phi_{1}} E_{2}\xrightarrow{\phi_{2}} \cdots \xrightarrow{\phi_{n-1}} E_{n},$$ where $\phi_{i}$ are injective morphisms and $rk(E_{i})\geq 1, \forall i$. There is a connection, by wallcrossing in the master space in the sense of Mochizuki, between the theory of such higher rank flags, and the theory of Higgs pairs on the surface, which provides the means to relate the flag invariants to the local DT invariants of threefold given by a line bundle on the surface, $X :=Tot(\mathcal{L} \to S)$. The latter, when $\mathcal{L}=\omega_{S}$, provides the means to compute the contribution of higher rank flag sheaves to partition function of Vafa-Witten theory on $X$.

Abstract:Working over an algebraically closed field $k$ of any characteristic, we determine the matrix factorizations for the --- suitably graded --- triangle singularities $f=x^a+y^b+z^c$ of domestic type, that is, we assume that $(a,b,c)$ are integers at least two, satisfying $1/a+1/b+1/c>1$. Using work by Kussin-Lenzing-Meltzer, this is achieved by determining projective covers in the Frobenius category of vector bundles on the weighted projective line of weight type $(a,b,c)$. Equivalently, in a representation-theoretic context, we can work in the mesh category of $\mathbb{Z}\tilde\Delta$ over $k$, where $\tilde\Delta$ is the extended Dynkin diagram, corresponding to the Dynkin diagram $\Delta=[a,b,c]$. Our work is related to, but in methods and results different from, the determination of matrix factorizations for the $\mathbb{Z}$-graded simple singularities by Kajiura-Saito-Takahashi. In particular, we obtain symmetric matrix factorizations whose entries are scalar multiples of monomials, with scalars taken from $\{0,\pm1\}$.
On the central value of Rankin $L$-functions for self-dual algebraic representations of linear groups over totally real fields

Abstract:Deligne has formulated extremely influential conjectures about certain special values of the $L$-functions of (Grothendieck) motives over a number field $F$. Given the conjectural dictionary between motives and 'algebraic' automorphic representations of $\textrm{GL}(N, {\mathbb A}_F)$, where ${\mathbb A}_F$ denotes the adèles of $F$, they translate into conjectures concerning the $L$-functions of these automorphic representations. These complex representations, when they are 'regular', can be conjugated by the automorphisms of the complex field ${\mathbb C}$. It then follows, as a weak consequence of Deligne's conjectures, that the vanishing at critical points (integers of half-integers) of the automorphic $L$-functions should be invariant by automorphisms of ${\mathbb C}$. If $F$ is totally imaginary, this has been proven by Moeglin, for standard or Rankin $L$-functions. Here we extend the result to Rankin $L$-fuctions for totally real fields $F$, under a parity and a regularity assumption. The proof relies on Eisenstein cohomology and the Zucker conjecture (a theorem of Looijenga and Saper-Stern.)

Abstract:We propose an efficiently verifiable lower bound on the rank of a sparse fully indecomposable square matrix that contains two non-zero entries in each row and each column. The rank of this matrix is equal to its order or differs from it by one. Bases of a special type are constructed in the spaces of quadratic forms in a fixed number of variables. The existence of these bases allows us to substantiate a heuristic algorithm for recognizing whether a given affine subspace passes through a vertex of a multidimensional unit cube. In the worst case, the algorithm may output a computation denial warning; however, for the general subspace of sufficiently small dimension, it correctly rejects the input. The algorithm is implemented in Python. The running time of its implementation is estimated in the process of testing.

Abstract:We give a lower bound for the Waring rank and cactus rank of forms that are invariant under an action of a connected algebraic group. We use this to improve the Ranestad--Schreyer--Shafiei lower bounds for the Waring ranks and cactus ranks of determinants of generic matrices, Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, and determinants of generic symmetric matrices.

Abstract:It is well known that in C[X], the product of two polynomials is equal to the product of their greatest common divisor and their least common multiple. In a recent paper, we proved a similar relation between the ranks of matrix polynomials. More precisely, the sum of the ranks of two matrix polynomials is equal to the sum of the rank of the greatest common divisor of the polynomials applied to the respective matrix and the rank of the least common multiple of the polynomials applied to the respective matrix. In this paper, we present three new proofs for this result. In addition to these, we present two more applications.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

Abstract:Let $k$ be a number field and $\mathcal{E}$ an elliptic curve defined over the function field $k(T)$ given by an equation of the form $y^2 = a_3x^3 + a_2x^2 + a_1x + a_0$, where $a_i \in k[T]$ and $deg(a_i) \leq 2$. Abstract:For an abelian variety $A$ over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we prove that the algebraic rank of $A$ is at most a suitably defined analytic rank. Moreover, we prove that equality, i.e., the BSD rank conjecture, holds for $A/K$ if and only if a suitably defined Tate--Shafarevich group of $A/K$ (1) has finite $\ell$-primary component for some/all $\ell \neq p$, or (2) finite prime-to-$p$ part, or (3) has $p$-primary part of finite exponent, or (4) is of finite exponent. There is an algorithm to verify those conditions for concretely given $A/K$.
