Abstract:As the demand for underwater communication continues to grow, underwater acoustic RIS (UARIS), as an emerging paradigm in underwater acoustic communication (UAC), can significantly improve the communication rate of underwater acoustic systems. However, in open underwater environments, the location of the source node is highly susceptible to being obtained by eavesdropping nodes through correlation analysis, leading to the issue of location privacy in underwater communication systems, which has been overlooked by many studies. To enhance underwater communication and protect location privacy, we propose a novel UARIS architecture integrated with an artificial noise (AN) module. This architecture not only improves communication quality but also introduces noise to interfere with the eavesdroppers' attempts to locate the source node. We derive the Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for the localization method deployed by the eavesdroppers and, based on this, model the UARIS-assisted communication scenario as a multi-objective optimization problem. This problem optimizes transmission beamforming, reflective precoding, and noise factors to maximize communication performance and location privacy protection. To efficiently solve this non-convex optimization problem, we develop an iterative algorithm based on fractional programming. Simulation results validate that the proposed system significantly enhances data transmission rates while effectively maintaining the location privacy of the source node in UAC systems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to protect the location privacy of source nodes while enhancing communication performance in underwater acoustic communication systems. Specifically, with the growth of the demand for underwater communication, underwater acoustic reconfigurable intelligent surface (UARIS), as an emerging paradigm, can significantly improve the communication rate of underwater acoustic systems. However, in the open underwater environment, the location of the source node can be easily obtained by eavesdropping nodes through correlation analysis, resulting in the location privacy problem in underwater communication systems. Many studies have ignored this problem. In order to enhance underwater communication and protect location privacy, the author proposes a new UARIS architecture and integrates an artificial noise (AN) module. This architecture not only improves the communication quality, but also interferes with the eavesdropping node's attempt to locate the source node by introducing noise. For this purpose, the author derives the Cramér - Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the positioning method deployed by the eavesdropping node, and based on this, models the UARIS - assisted communication scenario as a multi - objective optimization problem. This problem aims to maximize communication performance and location privacy protection by optimizing transmission beamforming, reflection precoding and noise factors. ### Specific problem description 1. **Low data transmission rate**: Compared with terrestrial wireless communication systems, the data transmission rate of underwater acoustic communication (UAC) systems is very low, usually only a few thousand bits per second (kbps), which is difficult to support the normal operation of most underwater applications. 2. **Location privacy threat**: Due to the openness of the underwater communication environment, the location of the source node (SN) sending signals can be easily determined by illegal eavesdropping nodes (ENs) by analyzing the received signals, thus threatening the privacy and security of the nodes. 3. **Lack of effective privacy protection mechanisms**: Most of the existing studies focus on improving underwater communication performance, but rarely consider the location privacy protection problem. Some studies interfere with ENs by using artificial noise (AN) from the transmitter and RIS in combination, but these studies assume that the source node and RIS know the location of the eavesdropping node in advance, which is not in line with the actual situation. ### Solutions 1. **Propose a UARIS architecture with an AN module**: This module interferes with illegal ENs by introducing noise into the reflected signal to prevent them from locating SN. This design overcomes the limitation of the previous assumption that the location of ENs needs to be known in advance, and enhances privacy protection in actual eavesdropping scenarios. 2. **Design an underwater communication enhancement and location privacy protection mechanism based on UARIS and AN**: By intelligently controlling the amplitude and phase of the reflected signal, UARIS not only improves the signal - to - noise ratio (SNR) at the receiving end and enhances communication performance, but also introduces dynamically controllable AN to protect the location privacy of SN. 3. **Establish a multi - objective optimization model**: Model underwater communication enhancement and location privacy protection as a multi - objective optimization problem of optimizing transmission beamforming, reflection precoding and noise factors to maximize communication performance and protect the location privacy of SN. 4. **Develop an iterative algorithm**: For non - convex optimization problems, use fractional programming (FP) to decouple them, and propose an iterative algorithm to jointly optimize transmission beamforming, reflection matrix and noise factor, gradually converging to a local optimal solution, thereby improving the efficiency and stability of the algorithm. Through the above methods, this paper aims to solve the contradiction between communication performance improvement and location privacy protection in underwater communication systems, and provides an effective method to deal with the challenges in underwater communication.
