Abstract:Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease can be stressful, resulting in poorer emotional and physical health among family caregivers. Although supportive resources for caregivers are available, distance, caregiver health, and the daily demands of caregiving are barriers to access. Based on research demonstrating the importance of positive emotions in coping with stress, our previous trial showed that dementia caregivers who participated in facilitated, web-based delivery of a positive emotion regulation intervention called LEAF (Life Enhancing Activities for Family caregivers) experienced increased positive emotion and decreased depression and anxiety. Building on this evidence, the LEAF 2.0 study aims to test whether web-based, self-guided delivery can confer similar benefits for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

Testing an Intervention to Improve Posthospital Outcomes in Persons Living With Dementia and Their Family Care Partners

Abstract:Background and objectives: Hospitalized persons living with dementia are at risk for functional decline, behavioral symptoms of distress, and delirium, all persisting in the postacute period. In turn, family care partners (FCPs) experience increased anxiety and lack of preparedness for caregiving, compounding existing strain and burden. Family-centered Function-focused Care (Fam-FFC) purposefully engages FCPs in assessment, decision-making, care delivery, and evaluation of function-focused care during and after hospitalization (within 48 hours of discharge, weekly telephone calls for a total of 7 additional weeks, then monthly for 4 months). The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of Fam-FFC. Research design and methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial included 455 dyads of persons living with dementia and FCPs in 6 medical units in 3 hospitals. Patient outcomes included return to baseline physical function, behavioral symptoms of distress, depressive symptoms, and delirium severity. Family care partner measures included preparedness for caregiving, anxiety, strain, and burden. Results: Multilevel level modeling demonstrated that the likelihood of returning to baseline function across time for Fam-FFC participants was twice that of the control group by the end of 6 months (OR = 2.4, p = .01, 95% CI 1.2-4.7). Family-centered Function-focused Care was also associated with fewer symptoms of distress (b = -1.1, SE = 0.56, p = .05) but no differences in the amount of moderate physical activity, depressive symptoms, and delirium severity. Preparedness for caregiving increased significantly only from 2 to 6 months (b = 0.89, SE = 0.45, d = 0.21, overall p = .02) in the intervention group, with no group differences in anxiety, strain, and burden. Discussion and implications: Family-centered Function-focused Care may help prevent some of the postacute functional decline and behavioral symptoms in hospitalized persons living with dementia. Further research is needed to promote sustained improvements in these symptoms with more attention to the postacute needs of the care partner.
Impact of aldehyde content on amphotericin B-dextran imine conjugate toxicity.

Abstract:The biocompatibility of oxidized dextran (40 kDa) was investigated in vitro. The contribution of aldehyde groups to the toxicity of polymer-drug conjugates, such as dextran-amphotericin B (AmB) was evaluated. Oxidized dextran was proved to be toxic against the RAW 264.7 cell line with an IC50 of 3 micromol/mL aldehydes. Modification of aldehyde groups and their reaction with ethanolamine reduced the toxicity at least 15-fold. Accordingly, the antifungal and antileishmanial dextran-AmB imine conjugate, which contains unreacted aldehyde groups, was modified with ethanolamine and compared to dextran-AmB amine and imine conjugates. Modification of the imine conjugate with ethanolamine reduced its toxicity toward the RAW cell line by 100%. The effect on Leishmania major parasites was 5 times higher than that of the dextran-AmB amine conjugate. The dextran-AmB-ethanolamine conjugate was at least 15 times less hemolytic than free AmB. Stability and drug release profiles in buffer solution were investigated. The imine conjugates released free AmB while the amine conjugate did not. It is concluded that aldehyde groups may contribute to cell toxicity. This toxicity is reduced by converting the aldehyde groups into imine conjugates with ethanolamine. The results have direct implications toward the safety of AmB-polysaccharide conjugates used against fungal and leishmanial infections.

Abstract:Background: Caregivers of persons with heart failure must manage high levels of patient health care utilization, treatment complexity and often unpredictable stressors associated with intermittent symptom exacerbations and mortality. Interventions have often focused on the needs of the person with HF, not the caregiver. Therefore, we developed an intervention using human-centered design to provide caregiver-targeted support for this population. Objective: Pilot test the feasibility and gauge initial effect size of the Caregiver Support intervention to improve quality of life (mental and physical), caregiver burden, and self-efficacy among family caregivers from baseline to 16 weeks. Methods: The intervention includes five individualized, nurse-led sessions over 10 weeks conducted remotely (due to COVID-19). Intervention components focus on 1) nature of caregiving, 2) life purpose, 3) co-development of an action plan to address caregiver goals to reduce caregiver burden and improve caregiver well-being, 4) exploration of social and community resources to support unmet needs, and 5) building a sustainability plan for addressing future caregiver needs. We tested our approach in a randomized waitlist control pilot trial (N=35) from August 2020 through March 2022. We calculated enrollment and retention rates, described acceptability, and computed intervention effect sizes from baseline to 16 weeks. Results: 35 out of 101 (35%) eligible caregivers enrolled and were majority female (93.3%), White (60%) and spousal caregivers (63.3%). Average age was 59.4 ± 16.6 years. Overall retention was 69%. All intervention participants completed the five core components, reporting high levels of satisfaction and acceptability of activities. Between-group effect sizes (n=21) at 16 weeks suggest improvement in the mental health component of quality of life, caregiver burden, and self-efficacy (effect sizes 0.88, 0.31, and 0.63, respectively). Conclusion: Caregivers found Caregiver Support acceptable and study methods were feasible, despite challenges to engaging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings provide foundational evidence that this person-centered behavioral intervention can contribute to enhanced caregiver outcomes.

Abstract:Nearly two-thirds of family caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias (AD/ADRD) provide complex care, including medical care. Family caregivers typically receive little to no training on how to provide this care. Furthermore, family caregivers simultaneously grapple with the presence of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), diminished communication abilities, and comorbidities such as diabetes. We developed Learning Skills Together ( LST ), a 6-week digitally delivered psychoeducational program, to facilitate family caregiver abilities to administer complex care tasks. The goal of the present study is to test the efficacy of LST and to reduce adverse outcomes associated with caregiving, such as depressive symptomology and negative appraisal of BPSD.

Testing a Family-Centered Intervention to Promote Functional and Cognitive Recovery in Hospitalized Older Adults

Abstract:A comparative trial using a repeated-measures design was designed to evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of the Family-Centered Function-Focused-Care (Fam-FFC) intervention, which is intended to promote functional recovery in hospitalized older adults. A family-centered resource nurse and a facility champion implemented a three-component intervention (environmental assessment and modification, staff education, individual and family education and partnership in care planning with follow-up after hospitalization for an acute illness). Control units were exposed to function-focused-care education only. Ninety-seven dyads of medical patients aged 65 and older and family caregivers (FCGs) were recruited from three medical units of a community teaching hospital. Fifty-three percent of patients were female, 89% were white, 51% were married, and 40% were widowed, and they had a mean age of 80.8 ± 7.5. Seventy-eight percent of FCGs were married, 34% were daughters, 31% were female spouses or partners, and 38% were aged 46 to 65. Patient outcomes included functional outcomes (activities of daily living (ADLs), walking performance, gait, balance) and delirium severity and duration. FCG outcomes included preparedness for caregiving, anxiety, depression, role strain, and mutuality. The intervention group demonstrated less severity and shorter duration of delirium and better ADL and walking performance but not better gait and balance performance than the control group. FCGs who participated in Fam-FFC showed a significant increase in preparedness for caregiving and a decrease in anxiety and depression from admission to 2 months after discharge but no significant differences in strain or quality of the relationship with the care recipient from FCGs in the control group. Fam-FFC is feasible and has the potential to improve outcomes for hospitalized older adults and their caregivers.

Through Alzheimer's Eyes: A Virtual Pilot Intervention for Family Caregivers of People with Dementia

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a virtually delivered psychoeducational skill-building intervention for ADRD caregivers. Methods: A single-arm, pre-posttest pilot study design was employed to evaluate the intervention. Four 90-min group-based weekly sessions were combined with four individual coaching sessions via Zoom. Intervention components covered topics designed to reduce caregiver stress and distress, and a VR experience to help caregivers understand dementia. Data was gathered via REDCap pre- and post-intervention and through post-intervention interviews via Zoom. Results: Results (N = 20) from individual interviews, surveys, and treatment implementation strategies suggest strong feasibility and acceptability. Key change exploration indicated medium effect sizes and statistical significance in preparedness for caregiving (t(19) = 2.69, p = .015, d = 63), communication (t(19) = 2.45, p = .024, d = 0.55), and a medium effect size for the mindful attention awareness scale (t(19) = 0.48, p = (0.637, d = 0.54). Further, participants reported their perceptions of improvement in outcomes such as the ability to care, increased understanding of memory loss, and confidence. Conclusions: Through Alzheimer's Eyes is a feasible and acceptable intervention that blends technology with skill-building strategies to help caregivers manage their stress and distress regardless of their location. Clinical implications: There is potential for interventions including VR to assist family caregivers in managing caregiving challenges and improve well-being.
A Web-Based Intervention Based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Family Caregivers of People With Dementia: Mixed Methods Feasibility Study

Abstract:Background: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), as an empirically based third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy, has shown promise in enhancing well-being and functioning across diverse populations. However, in the context of caregiving, the effect size of available ACT interventions remains at best moderate, sometimes accompanied by high dropout rates, highlighting the need for more effective and feasible intervention designs. Objective: The objective of our study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a fully online ACT program designed for family caregivers of people with dementia. This study aimed to boost psychological flexibility and support caregivers, enabling them to realize and prioritize their own life values alongside their caregiving responsibilities. Methods: A mixed methods feasibility study using an uncontrolled pretest-posttest design was conducted. This intervention included a 9-week web-based self-help program based on ACT incorporating collaborative goal setting and weekly web-based motivational coaching for family caregivers of people with dementia. This study involved 30 informal caregivers recruited through memory clinics and social media platforms in the Netherlands and received approval from the Medical Ethics Committee of the Maastricht University Medical Center+ (NL77389.068.21/metc21-029). Results: A total of 24 caregivers completed the postintervention assessment, indicating a high adherence rate (24/29, 83%). Caregivers reported positive feedback regarding collaborative goal setting, but some found challenges in implementing new skills due to their own habitual responses or the unpredictable context of dementia caregiving. Personalizing the intervention based on individual value preferences was highlighted as beneficial. Conclusions: Compared to other web-based self-help ACT interventions for family caregivers, this intervention showed a high adherence and sufficient level of feasibility, which underscores the use of personalization in delivering web-based interventions. Moreover, the potential of this ACT-based intervention for family caregivers of people with dementia was demonstrated, suggesting that further research and a larger-scale controlled trial are warranted to validate its effectiveness. Surviving and Thriving: Qualitative Results from a Multi-Year, Multidimensional Intervention to Promote Well-Being among Caregivers of Adults with Dementia

Abstract:(1) Introduction: Caring for an adult with dementia is both challenging and rewarding. Research indicates that community-based, social support, and/or arts engagement interventions can play a key role in ameliorating the negative outcomes associated with caregiving while enhancing its more positive attributes. This study explores the psychosocial outcomes experienced by dementia caregivers who participated in a multi-year, multidimensional intervention aimed at promoting caregiver and care recipient well-being. This intervention included bringing caregivers and people with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias (ADRD) to local symphony performances, hosting a social reception prior to the performance, and assessing the outcomes of participation for both caregiver and the care recipient. (2) Materials, Methods, and Analysis: Qualitative data from participant phone interviews (n = 55) as well as focus groups are analyzed using thematic analysis from a phenomenological perspective. (3) Results: Across three years of participation, caregivers reported three main program benefits: relationship building (both with other participants as well as within the broader community); restored humanity (experiencing a greater sense of personal dignity and momentary return to normalcy), and positivity (experiencing positive emotions during the program). (4) Discussion: These findings point to the value of creating caregiver programming that brings together multiple dimensions of successful interventions in order to enhance caregiver experiences and positive intervention outcomes.

Outcomes of a Two-Component Intervention on Behavioral Symptoms in Persons With Dementia and Symptom Response in Their Caregivers

Abstract:Purpose: This study evaluated the longitudinal influence of an individualized evidence-based psychoeducational intervention for caregivers on frequency of behavioral symptoms in persons with dementia (PWD) and caregiver reaction to these symptoms. The intervention included information about the disease process using Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold (PLST) content and a family meeting based on Mittelman's New York University Intervention. Method: A quasi-experimental study design was implemented. The Revised Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist was administered to N = 127 caregiver/care recipient dyads at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months follow-up. All caregivers were enrolled in the intervention at baseline and followed over 18 months. Linear mixed models were developed to evaluate effects on frequency of behavioral symptoms in PWD and caregiver response. Results: The most frequently occurring behavior was memory problems, although depressive behaviors produced the most negative caregiver responses. Between baseline and 6-month follow-up, there was a significant decrease in frequency of behavioral symptoms. Overall, there was a significant decrease in caregiver's reaction to behavioral symptoms from baseline to 18-month follow-up.

Abstract:In this study, we advance dementia caregiver intervention research by drawing on the tenets of positive psychology. We investigate the mediating mechanisms of a cognitive-behavioural intervention incorporating resource activation as a superordinate, strength-based heuristic on dementia caregivers' quality of life (QoL). QoL captures the full spectrum of human functioning (i.e. not just the absence of suffering). We examine the utilization of resources related to well-being (i.e. enhancing positive experiences) and coping with daily hassles (i.e. reducing negative experiences) as two distinct potential mechanisms. Two hundred and seventy-three dementia caregivers were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 139) or control group (n = 134). Multiple mediation analyses indicated that utilization of resources related to well-being and coping mediated the effects of the intervention on caregivers' psychological, physical and overall QoL & health at post-test and 6-month follow-up. (Re-)activating resources from both domains appears to be more effective than focusing on just one domain.
Feasibility of training family caregivers of people living with dementia online to deliver life review depression intervention at home

Abstract:Objectives: To alleviate the high prevalence of depressive symptoms and dementia in older Americans (≥65 years), we developed a depression intervention, Caregiver-Provided Life Review (C-PLR), and taught family caregivers life review skills online compared to a synchronous group virtual training, and examined the feasibility and delivery impact (N = 20 dyads). Method: In a cross-sectional, mixed-methods dyadic design, we recruited family caregiver-care recipient dyads nationwide, collected the pre- and post-intervention measures on care recipients' depression (primary outcome), life satisfaction, caregivers' burden, caregiving rewards, and dyads' relationship quality (secondary outcomes), and compared them using t-tests. We took fidelity scores to measure caregivers' feasibility of delivering life reviews adhering to the protocol. Results: Care recipients' depressive symptoms declined significantly following the C-PLR intervention (p = 0.034) and caregivers' rewards increased from the pre- to post-period (p = 0.019). Caregivers' qualitative interviews supported the quantitative results that online-trained caregivers' ability to deliver the intervention with high adherence to protocol (15.9 ± 0.27 out of 16) without increasing caregiver burden. Conclusion: This pilot study suggested that the C-PLR could make a positive impact on both caregivers' and care recipients' mental health. This innovative, cost-effective, and easily implemented activity can be used by any dyad regardless of whether they have any health-related deficits.
Leo program, a short multi-family skill-based psychoeducational program for caregivers of relatives living with a severe mental disorder: a retrospective pilot study

Abstract:Background: Caring for a relative with a severe mental disorder (SMD) is associated with high levels of burden and poor physical and mental health. There is a dire need for family psychoeducational programs that can be provided as early as possible. This manuscript describes the pilot testing of "Leo" a motivational-based psychoeducational program for caregivers of individuals with a SMD. The Leo program aims to provide caregivers with skills to best support their relative and to adopt self-care behaviors. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed medical records of caregivers who enrolled in a short, multi-family, skill-based psychoeducational program, consisting of eight 3-hour sessions over 8 weeks. Outcomes of interest included: i) adherence to the program, ii) satisfaction and perceived usefulness, and iii) pre-post changes in self-reported levels of depression (CES-D), burden (ZBI), and skills (10 Likert-scaled items). A network analysis was used to investigate the relationships between pre-post changes in self-evaluated skills and pre-post changes in burden and depression levels. Results: Over the 91 enrolled participants, 87 (95.6%) completed the program attending at least 5/8 sessions, 80.5% attending all sessions. Seventy-six caregivers fulfilled the questionnaires at baseline and after the program, and were included in the analysis. Although there was no evidence for significant change in self-reported depression levels (Cohen's d=0.19, p=0.210), burden scores and all evaluated skills were improved post-intervention, with medium to strong effect size (Cohen's ds from 0.47 to 0.87; p<0.001). Network output indicated that increased self-evaluated competence in 5 skills were associated with a global improvement in caregivers' burden and/or depression scores. Post-intervention, 89.7% of caregivers were "very satisfied" and 82.1% found the program "extremely useful". Conclusion: This pilot retrospective study shows high levels of satisfaction, perceived usefulness, and adherence to "Leo", a short, multi-family, skill-based psychoeducational program with promising results in improving caregivers' burden, self-evaluated competence in coping with caregiving demands and in self-care behaviors. This study provides preliminary insights into the mechanisms by which family psychoeducation might alleviate burden of care. A larger-scaled, controlled, randomized study with follow-up assessments is warranted to determine how burden, depression, and skills, as well as their inter-relationships, evolve over time.

Abstract:Geographical variations in the HLA-DQ genotypes associated with risk for type 1 diabetes were evaluated in Finland. Samples of 280 diabetic children diagnosed in Turku (south-west of the country) and 405 in Oulu (north of the country) were studied as well as a series of 14 096 and 10 016 newborns collected from the same hospitals. There were no major differences in the risk or protection conferred by various HLA-DQB1 genotypes between south-western and northern parts of the country when genotypes of children with type 1 diabetes from these two centres were compared with those of newborns, representing the background populations. However, the distribution of various genotypes was different, both in diabetic children and in newborns, when compared between the two regions (P < 0.0001, chi2 test). These differences reflected the allele frequencies in newborn cohorts in which HLA-DQB1*02 and DQB1*0301 were found more often in Turku and DQB1*0302 more often in Oulu (P < 0.0001 for all differences). Similar types of differences were detected when children who were diagnosed as having diabetes during the national 'Childhood Diabetes in Finland' (DiMe) study between the years 1986-1989 were compared according to their residence. The observed differences in genotype and allele frequencies demonstrate the heterogeneity for HLA alleles even in a population that is generally regarded as highly homogeneous. These differences also affect the sensitivity and efficiency of the screening programme used for identifying infants with genetic susceptibility to IDDM in the ongoing Finnish Diabetes Prediction and Prevention Study.

This study examined (i) whether patient-caregiver dyads (i.e., pairs) randomly assigned to a brief or extensive dyadic intervention (the FOCUS Program) had better outcomes than dyads randomly assigned to usual care and (ii) whether patients' risk for distress and other factors moderated the effect of the brief or extensive program on outcomes.METHODS: Advanced cancer patients and their caregivers (N = 484 dyads) were stratified by patients' baseline risk for distress (high versus low), cancer type (lung, colorectal, breast, or prostate), and research site and then randomly assigned to a brief (three-session) or extensive (six-session) intervention or control. The interventions offered dyads information and support. Intermediary outcomes were appraisals (i.e., appraisal of illness/caregiving, uncertainty, and hopelessness) and resources (i.e., coping, interpersonal relationships, and self-efficacy). The primary outcome was QOL. Data were collected prior to intervention and post-intervention (3 and 6 months from baseline). The final sample was 302 dyads. Repeated measures MANCOVA was used to evaluate outcomes.RESULTS: Significant group by time interactions showed that there was an improvement in dyads' coping (p < 0.05), self-efficacy (p < 0.05), and social QOL (p < 0.01) and in caregivers' emotional QOL (p < 0.05). Effects varied by intervention dose. Most effects were found at 3 months only. Risk for distress accounted for very few moderation effects.CONCLUSIONS: Both brief and extensive programs had positive outcomes for patient-caregiver dyads, but few sustained effects. Patient-caregiver dyads benefit when viewed as the 'unit of care'.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Residential Care Transition Module, a six-session, psychosocial, and psychoeducational telehealth intervention for family caregivers of cognitively impaired relatives living in a residential long-term care setting. Eligible participants (including care recipients, regardless of time since admission) were randomized to treatment or usual care control conditions. Survey data were collected at baseline, 4 months, 8 months, and 12 months ( N = 240). Primary analytic outcomes included caregiver subjective stress (a stress process mechanism) and depressive symptoms (a measure of global well-being). Secondary analytic outcomes included secondary role strains, residential care stress, caregiver sense of competence, and self-efficacy (additional mechanisms of action). General linear models tested for the main effects of the intervention at 4 months, and longitudinal mixed models examined the 12-month effects of the intervention. Post hoc analyses also examined the influence of moderators. No significant differences between the treatment and control groups for any primary analytic outcome were apparent. Caregivers in the treatment group whose relatives were admitted to residential long-term care in the prior 3 months were more likely to indicate reductions in depressive symptoms over the first 4 months of participation. Over the 12-month study period, caregivers in the treatment group who were employed reported increased self-efficacy over time. The heterogeneity of dementia care requires a broader consideration of key contextual factors that may influence the efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions. Aligning measures with the preferences, goals, and values of dementia caregivers may further demonstrate the direct benefits of interventions such as the Residential Care Transition Module. Abstract:Background: 'Learning to feel better… and help better' is a psychoeducational intervention that aims to empower family caregivers of people with dementia by helping them cope better with the daily stress of dementia caregiving. The intervention has been adapted to a Swiss context and evaluated with a mixed-method design, yielding promising results in caregivers, such as a reduced subjective burden and improved self-efficacy. Qualitative findings have provided insight into potentially relevant intermediate changes that must be further explored to better understand how the intervention precipitates the achieved changes. We aim to qualitatively explore such changes, related mechanisms and key intervention components in the context of this intervention. Methods: A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to achieve this aim. Changes, related mechanisms and key intervention components were identified by exploring the following: 1) longitudinal qualitative data, collected from 13 family caregivers via interviews performed before, during and after the intervention (39 interviews total) and 2) cross-sectional post-intervention interview data collected from 22 family caregivers (22 interviews). Results: Experiencing calmness was the most important change for caregivers in the context of this intervention. The calmness model, developed based on the qualitative analysis, illustrates the intermediate changes that contributed to calmness, such as being able to cope with daily life and experiencing positive interactions with the family member with dementia. Related key intervention components were the coping strategy 'reframing', employed in diverse ways by the caregivers to reduce daily stress, and the didactic method 'active skills' training', which involved active participation by the caregivers and the guidance of a professional group leader. One important factor hampering changes in caregivers was having difficulties accepting the caregiver role or accepting the losses due to dementia. Conclusion: The calmness model offers valuable insight into how this intervention can benefit family caregivers and aid in developing interventions targeting similar mechanisms and changes. An Outpatient-Based Training Program Improves Family Caregivers' Preparedness in Caring for Persons With Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: Little is known regarding the effects of training programs on family caregivers of older persons with mild cognitive impairment because of the significant differences in outcome variables measured in the various studies in the literature. Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effects of an outpatient-based caregiver training program on the preparedness, health-related quality of life, and depressive symptoms of participants responsible for caring for older persons with mild cognitive impairment. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was implemented. Of the 54 family caregiver participants who provided complete and valid data, 28 and 26 were assigned to the experimental and control groups, respectively. The experimental group participated in a researcher-developed training program that provided information on mild cognitive impairment, strategies for maintaining and promoting cognitive function in persons with mild cognitive impairment, managing their own and their care recipients' healthcare, and managing their own emotional support and stress. Outcomes (caregiver preparedness, health-related quality of life, and depressive symptoms) were assessed before the start of the training program (baseline) and at 1, 3, and 6 months after completion of the program. Results: After controlling for baseline cognitive function of the care recipients and of caregiver preparedness, the experimental group was shown to be significantly less prepared than the control group at baseline (β = -1.41, p = .031) and better prepared than the control group at all three posttests (group differences: 1.3, 1.53, and 4.24, respectively), with the difference at the third posttest (6 months) reaching statistical significance (p = .008). No impact of the intervention on caregiver depressive symptoms or health-related quality of life was found at posttest. Conclusions: The training intervention in this study was found to increase the perceived preparedness of the family caregiver participants to handle various aspects of providing care to persons with mild cognitive impairment. However, no changes were found in depressive symptoms or health-related quality of life.
