Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Abstract:This work studies the convexity of a class of positive definite probability measures with density functionsρ=cλ∑n=0∞g(n)Cnλwλ, that are generated through the interval characteristic sequences. We discuss when such measures supported in an interval are convex and demonstrate how convexity is preserved under multiplication by certain multipliers and under the intertwining product. A key message to be delivered from this work is: any integrable function f on the interval with a polynomial expansion that has relatively fast absolute convergence, can be decomposed into a non-unique pair of positive convex interval probabilities (f+,f−)∈Eλ′×Eλ′ up to normalization, in the sense that f=f+−f−, where Eλ′ is a class of convex functions. Consequently not only the study of an interval distribution is reduced to the study of the properties of class Eλ′, but also the discontinuous probabilistic Galerkin schemes can be simplified. As concrete examples the decomposition of polynomials and truncated normal distribution are computed and graphically illustrated. Such interval measures lead to localized spherical probability measures, and as a convex expression of probability measure is a Jensen type inequality for spherical random variables. Based on the spherical information entropy models, one dependent on the domain partition and the other not, we propose three minimization formulations for the probabilistic finite element method, including one that mixes the least-squares and entropy models.
Uniform resonance free regions for convex cocompact hyperbolic surfaces and expanders

Abstract:We prove that every family of coverings of any infinite-area, convex cocompact hyperbolic surface has uniform spectral gap, provided that the associated Schreier graphs form a family of two-sided expanders. This extends the results of Brooks, Burger, and Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak to a setting where the Laplacian has no $L^2$-eigenvalues. In particular, the notion of spectral gap needs to be redefined in terms of the resonances of the Laplacian. As an immediate corollary, we obtain uniform spectral gap for congruence covers of convex cocompact surfaces, a result previously established by Oh-Winter and Bourgain-Kontorovich-Magee. Moreover, given any convex cocompact hyperbolic surface $X$, we provide a new "universal" resonance-free region for $X$, by which we mean a region in the complex plane that contains no resonances for any finite cover of $X$. This enlarges the universal resonance-free region given by Magee-Naud. Our methods rely on the thermodynamic formalism for twisted Selberg zeta functions.

Abstract:We make comments on the paper presented by Kim \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{61}, 11317 (2000)]. The authors analyzed activation energies of HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+\delta}$ thin films with a scaling relation, and defined four vortex regions for thin films. We find that the definitions of four vortex regions and the scaling relation are questionable when studying their definition of the resistivity range for thermally activated flux flow. Using the empirical activation energy form suggested by Zhang \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{71}, 052502 (2005)] for lower resistivity data, we find that the form is not only in good agreement with the resistivity $\rho(T,H)$, but also with the apparent activation energy $-\partial \ln \rho(T,H)/\partial T^{-1}$.

Abstract:We investigate the spectral distribution of the twisted Laplacian associated with uniform square-integrable bounded harmonic 1-form on typical hyperbolic surfaces of high genus. First, we estimate the spectral distribution by the supremum norm of the corresponding harmonic form. Subsequently, we show that the square-integrable bounded harmonic form exhibits a small supremum norm for typical hyperbolic surfaces of high genus. Based on these findings, we prove a uniform Weyl law for the distribution of real parts of the spectrum on typical hyperbolic surfaces.

Abstract:In this article, we study the Dirac spectrum of typical hyperbolic surfaces of finite area, equipped with a nontrivial spin structure (so that the Dirac spectrum is discrete). For random Weil-Petersson surfaces of large genus $g$ with $o(\sqrt{g})$ cusps, we prove convergence of the spectral density to the spectral density of the hyperbolic plane, with quantitative error estimates. This result implies upper bounds on spectral counting functions and multiplicities, as well as a uniform Weyl law, true for typical hyperbolic surfaces equipped with any nontrivial spin structure.

Abstract:The classical Weyl problem (solved by Lewy, Alexandrov, Pogorelov, and others) asks whether any metric of curvature $K\geq 0$ on the sphere is induced on the boundary of a unique convex body in $\R^3$. The answer was extended to surfaces in hyperbolic space by Alexandrov in the 1950s, and a ``dual'' statement, describing convex bodies in terms of the third fundamental form of their boundary (e.g. their dihedral angles, for an ideal polyhedron) was later proved. We describe three conjectural generalizations of the Weyl problem in $\HH^3$ and its dual to unbounded convex subsets and convex surfaces, in ways that are relevant to contemporary geometry since a number of recent results and well-known open problems can be considered as special cases. One focus is on convex domain having a ``thin'' asymptotic boundary, for instance a quasicircle -- this part of the problem is strongly related to the theory of Kleinian groups. A second direction is towards convex subsets with a ``thick'' ideal boundary, for instance a disjoint union of disks -- here one find connections to problems in complex analysis, such as the Koebe circle domain conjecture. A third direction is towards complete, convex disks of infinite area in $\HH^3$ and surfaces in hyperbolic ends -- with connections to questions on circle packings or grafting on the hyperbolic disk. Similar statements are proposed in anti-de Sitter geometry, a Lorentzian cousin of hyperbolic geometry where interesting new phenomena can occur, and in Minkowski and Half-pipe geometry. We also collect some partial new results mostly based on recent works.

Abstract:Volumes of moduli spaces of hyperbolic cone surfaces were previously defined and computed when the angles of the cone singularities are at most 2pi. We propose a general definition of these volumes without restriction on the angles. This construction is based on flat geometry as our proposed volume is a limit of Masur-Veech volumes of moduli spaces of multi-differentials. This idea generalizes the observation in quantum gravity that the Jackiw-Teitelboim partition function is a limit of minimal string partition functions from Liouville gravity. Finally, we use the properties of these volumes to recover Mirzakhani's recursion formula for Weil-Petersson polynomials. This provides a new proof of Witten-Kontsevich's theorem.
