Abstract:In this paper we study the analyticity of solutions to a free boundary problem modeling the growth of multi-layer tumors. The problem consists of three elliptic equations defined on a strip-like domain in Rn+1, with one part of the boundary moving and a priori unknown. The evolution of the moving boundary is governed by a Stefan type equation, with the surface tension effect taken into consideration. Due to the unknown boundary and surface tension effect, this problem is an essentially nonlinear problem. By following a functional analytical approach and the theory of maximal regularity, we prove that solutions of this free boundary problem are real analytic in time and space for any positive time, even if the given initial data admit mild regularity only.

Abstract:In this paper we first study local phase diagram of an abstract parabolic differential equation in a Banach space such that the equation possesses an invariance structure under a local Lie group action. Next we use this abstract result to study a free boundary problem modeling the growth of non-necrotic tumors in the presence of inhibitors. This problem contains two reaction-diffusion equations describing the diffusion of the nutrient and the inhibitor, respectively, and an elliptic equation describing the distribution of the internal pressure. There is also an equation for the surface tension to govern the movement of the free boundary. By first performing some reduction processes to write this free boundary problem into a parabolic differential equation in a Banach space, and next using a new center manifold theorem established recently by Cui [8], and the abstract result mentioned above, we prove that under suitable conditions the radial stationary solution is locally asymptotically stable under small non-radial perturbations, and when these conditions are not satisfied then such a stationary solution is unstable. In the second case we also give a description of local phase diagram of the equation in a neighborhood of the radial stationary solution and construct its stable and unstable manifolds. In particular, we prove that in the unstable case, if the transient solution exists globally and is contained in a neighborhood of the radial stationary solution, then the transient solution will finally converge to a nearby radial stationary solution uniquely determined by the initial data.

Abstract:On stratified Lie groups we study a semilinear heat equation with the Hardy potential, a power non-linearity and a forcing term which depends only upon the spacial variable. The analysis of an equivalent formulation to the problem and an application of a decade old result of Avelin et al. facilitates the management of the singularity in the Hardy potential, thereby yielding results pertaining to both local and global nonexistence. In addition, local existence is verified when the gradient term appearing in the Hardy potential is unimodular almost everywhere. The global existence is also proved under an additional assumption that the forcing term depends on the time variable as well. Through these results this paper sheds light on the possible pivotal exponents for the existence of both local and global solutions to the equation, offering a deeper understanding of the interplay between the model's parameters and the underlying stratified Lie group structure.

Abstract:The article is about an elliptic problem defined on a {\it stratified Lie group}. Both sub- and superlinear cases are considered whose solutions are guaranteed to exist in light of the interplay between the nonlinearities and the weak $L^1$ datum. The existence of infinitely many solutions is proved for suitable values of $\lambda,p,q$ by using the Symmetric Mountain Pass Theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, the existence of at least one solution to the problem (P) {−LMu=λf(u)eα|u|M′+μ|u|p−2uinΩu=0on∂Ω (P) is established, where LMu:=divG⋅(|∇Gu|M−2∇Gu) is the M -sub-Laplacian, 2≤p , α>0 , M′=MM−1 , Ω is a bounded subset of the N -dimensional stratified Lie group G with N≥3 ( N = 1, 2 has been avoided since they do not produce a purely stratified Lie group) and M is the homogeneous dimension of G . We will also show that in fact, the problem admits infinitely many solutions with some restrictions on the parameters involved.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the subelliptic nonlocal Brezis-Nirenberg problem on stratified Lie groups involving critical nonlinearities, namely, \begin{align*} (-\Delta_{\mathbb{G}, p})^s u&= \mu |u|^{p_s^*-2}u+\lambda h(x, u) \quad \text{in}\quad \Omega, \\ u&=0\quad \text{in}\quad \mathbb{G}\backslash \Omega, \end{align*} where $(-\Delta_{\mathbb{G}, p})^s$ is the fractional $p$-sub-Laplacian on a stratified Lie group $\mathbb{G}$ with homogeneous dimension $Q,$ $\Omega$ is an open bounded subset of $\mathbb{G},$ $s \in (0,1)$, $\frac{Q}{s}>p\geq2,$ $p_s^*:=\frac{pQ}{Q-ps}$ is subelliptic fractional Sobolev critical exponent, $\mu, \lambda>0$ are real parameters and $h$ is a lower order perturbation of the critical power $|u|^{p_s^*-2}u$. Utilising direct methods of the calculus of variation, we establish the existence of at least one weak solution for the above problem under the condition that the real parameter $\lambda$ is sufficiently small. Additionally, we examine the problem for $\mu = 0$, representing subelliptic nonlocal equations on stratified Lie groups depending on one real positive parameter and involving a subcritical nonlinearity. We demonstrate the existence of at least one solution in this scenario as well. We emphasize that the results obtained here are also novel for $p=2$ even for the Heisenberg group.

Abstract:The non-transversal intersection of the free boundary with the fixed boundary is obtained for nonlinear uniformly elliptic operators when $\Omega = \{\nabla u \neq 0\} \cap \{x_n>0\}$ thereby solving a problem in elliptic theory that in the case of the Laplacian is completely understood but has remained arcane in the nonlinear setting in higher dimension. Also, a solution is given to a problem discussed in "Regularity of free boundaries in obstacle-type problems" \cite{MR2962060}. The free boundary is $C^1$ in a neighborhood of the fixed if the solution is physical and if $n=2$ in the absolute general context. The regularity is even new for the Laplacian. The innovation is via geometric configurations on how free boundary points converge to the fixed boundary and investigating the spacing between free boundary points.

Free boundary regularity for semilinear variational problems with a topological constraint

Abstract:We study a class of semilinear free boundary problems in which admissible functions $u$ have a topological constraint, or spanning condition, on their 1-level set. This constraint forces $\{u=1\}$, which is the free boundary, to behave like a surface with some special types of singularities attached to a fixed boundary frame, in the spirit of the Plateau problem of Harrison-Pugh. Two such free boundary problems are the minimization of capacity among surfaces sharing a common boundary and an Allen-Cahn formulation of the Plateau problem. We establish the existence of minimizers and study the regularity of solutions to the Euler-Lagrange equations, obtaining the optimal Lipschitz regularity for solutions and analytic regularity for the free boundaries away from a codimension two singular set. The singularity models for these problems are given by conical critical points of the minimal capacity problem, which are closely related to spectral optimal partition and segregation problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the sharp fractional subelliptic Sobolev inequalities and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities on stratified Lie groups. The best constants are given in terms of a ground state solution of a fractional subelliptic equation involving the fractional $p$-sublaplacian ($1<p<\infty$) on stratified Lie groups. We also prove the existence of ground state (least energy) solutions to nonlinear subelliptic fractional Schrödinger equation on stratified Lie groups. Different from the proofs of analogous results in the setting of classical Sobolev spaces on Euclidean spaces given by Weinstein (Comm. Math. Phys. 87(4):576-676 (1982/1983)) using the rearrangement inequality which is not available in stratified Lie groups, we apply a subelliptic version of vanishing lemma due to Lions extended in the setting of stratified Lie groups combining it with the compact embedding theorem for subelliptic fractional Sobolev spaces obtained in our previous paper (Math. Ann. (2023)). We also present subelliptic fractional logarithmic Sobolev inequalities with explicit constants on stratified Lie groups. The main results are new for $p=2$ even in the context of the Heisenberg group.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give existence and uniqueness results for solutions of the Cauchy problem for semilinear heat equations on stratified Lie groups $\mathbb{G}$ with the homogeneous dimension $N$. We consider the nonlinear function behaves like $|u|^{\alpha}$ or $|u|^{\alpha-1}u$ $(\alpha>1)$ and the initial data $u_0$ belongs to the Sobolev spaces $L^p_s(\mathbb{G})$ for $1<p<\infty$ and $0<s<N/p$. Since stratified Lie groups $\mathbb{G}$ include the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ as an example, our results are an extension of the existence and uniqueness results obtained by F. Ribaud on ${\mathbb R}^n$ to $\mathbb{G}$. It should be noted that our proof is very different from it given by Ribaud on ${\mathbb R}^n$. We adopt the generalized fractional chain rule on $\mathbb{G}$ to obtain the estimate for the nonlinear term, which is very different from the paracomposition technique adopted by Ribaud on ${\mathbb R}^n$. By using the generalized fractional chain rule on $\mathbb{G}$, we can avoid the discussion of Fourier analysis on $\mathbb{G}$ and make the proof more simple.

Boundary behavior of limit-interfaces for the Allen-Cahn equation on Riemannian manifolds with Neumann boundary condition

Abstract:We study the boundary behavior of any limit-interface arising from a sequence of general critical points of the Allen-Cahn energy functionals on a smooth bounded domain. Given any such sequence with uniform energy bounds, we prove that the limit-interface is a free boundary varifold which is integer rectifiable up to the boundary. This extends earlier work of Hutchinson and Tonegawa on the interior regularity of such limit-interface. A key novelty in our result is that no convexity assumption of the boundary is required and it is valid even when the limit-interface clusters near the boundary. Moreover, our arguments are local and thus works in the Riemannian setting. This work provides the first step towards the regularity theory for the Allen-Cahn min-max theory for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces, which was developed in the Almgren-Pitts setting by the first-named author and Zhou.

Abstract:We study viscosity solutions to the classical one-phase problem and its thin counterpart. In low dimensions, we show that when the free boundary is the graph of a continuous function, the solution is the half-plane solution. This answers, in the salient dimensions, a one-phase free boundary analogue of Bernstein's problem for minimal surfaces. As an application, we also classify monotone solutions of semilinear equations with a bump-type nonlinearity.

On free boundary problems shaped by oscillatory singularities

Abstract:We start the investigation of free boundary variational models featuring oscillatory singularities. The theory varies widely depending upon the nature of the singular power $\gamma(x)$ and how it oscillates. Under a mild continuity assumption on $\gamma(x)$, we prove the optimal regularity of minimizers. Such estimates vary point-by-point, leading to a continuum of free boundary geometries. We also conduct an extensive analysis of the free boundary shaped by the singularities. Utilizing a new monotonicity formula, we show that if the singular power $\gamma(x)$ varies in a $W^{1,n^{+}}$ fashion, then the free boundary is locally a $C^{1,\delta}$ surface, up to a negligible singular set of Hausdorff co-dimension at least $2$.

Abstract:We prove the well-posedness of the differential equation $Au=f$ in the setting of a stratified group $\mathbb{G}$ when the considered second-order differential operator $A$ can be non-invariant and non-linear. Our approach follows the Campanato theory of nearness of operators, allowing one to treat equations with only bounded coefficients, without any regularity assumptions. Our analysis becomes explicit in the particular case of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$ of any dimension and on the Euclidean case $\mathbb{R}^n$, where in the latter case our results also extend the known results by treating the unbounded domain setting.

Abstract:We investigate the existence of two nontrivial solutions for a poly-Laplacian system involving concave-convex nonlinearities and parameters with Dirichlet boundary condition on locally finite graphs. By using the mountain pass theorem and Ekeland's variational principle, we obtain that system has at least one nontrivial solution of positive energy and one nontrivial solution of negative energy, respectively. We also obtain an estimate about semi-trivial solutions. Moreover, by using a result in [4] which is based on the fibering method and Nehari manifold, we obtain the existence of ground state solution to the single equation corresponding to poly-Laplacian system. Especially, we present some ranges of parameters in all of results.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a compact codimension-two submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and let $L$ be a nontrivial real line bundle over $X = \mathbb{R}^n \setminus \Gamma$. We study the Allen--Cahn functional, \[E_\varepsilon(u) = \int_X \varepsilon \frac{|\nabla u|^2}{2} + \frac{(1-|u|^2)^2}{4\varepsilon}\,dx,\] on the space of sections $u$ of $L$. Specifically, we are interested in critical sections for this functional and their relation to minimal hypersurfaces with boundary equal to $\Gamma$. We first show that, for a family of critical sections with uniformly bounded energy, in the limit as $\varepsilon \to 0$, the associated family of energy measures converges to an integer rectifiable $(n-1)$-varifold $V$. Moreover, $V$ is stationary with respect to any variation which leaves $\Gamma$ fixed. Away from $\Gamma$, this follows from work of Hutchinson--Tonegawa; our result extends their interior theory up to the boundary $\Gamma$. Under additional hypotheses, we can say more about $V$. When $V$ arises as a limit of critical sections with uniformly bounded Morse index, $\Sigma := \operatorname{supp} \|V\|$ is a minimal hypersurface, smooth away from $\Gamma$ and a singular set of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-8$. If the sections are globally energy minimizing and $n = 3$, then $\Sigma$ is a smooth surface with boundary, $\partial \Sigma = \Gamma$ (at least if $L$ is chosen correctly), and $\Sigma$ has least area among all surfaces with these properties. We thus obtain a new proof (originally suggested in a paper of Fröhlich and Struwe) that the smooth version of Plateau's problem admits a solution for every boundary curve in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This also works if $4 \leq n\leq 7$ and $\Gamma$ is assumed to lie in a strictly convex hypersurface.
