Abstract:In this article, we study algebraic properties of binomial edge ideals of Levi graphs associated with certain plane curve arrangements. Using combinatorial properties of Levi graphs, we discuss the Cohen-Macaulayness of binomial edge ideals of Levi graphs associated to some curve arrangements in the complex projective plane, like the $d$-arrangement of curves and the conic-line arrangements. We also discuss the existence of certain induced cycles in the Levi graphs of these arrangements and obtain lower bounds for the regularity of powers of the corresponding binomial edge ideals.

On the dynamics of the line operator $Λ_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ on some arrangements of six lines

Abstract:The operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ acting on line arrangements is defined by associating to a line arrangement \mathcal{A}, the line arrangement which is the union of the lines containing exactly three points among the double points of \mathcal{A}. We say that six lines not tangent to a conic form an unassuming arrangement if the singularities of their union are only double points, but the dual line arrangement has six triple points, six 5-points and 27 double points. The moduli space of unassuming arrangements is the union of a point and a line. The image by the operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ of an unassuming arrangement is again an unassuming arrangement. We study the dynamics of the operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ on these arrangements and we obtain that the periodic arrangements are related to the Ceva arrangements of lines.

On the number of cycles in a graph with restricted cycle lengths

Abstract:Let $L$ be a set of positive integers. We call a (directed) graph $G$ an $L$\emph{-cycle graph} if all cycle lengths in $G$ belong to $L$. Let $c(L,n)$ be the maximum number of cycles possible in an $n$-vertex $L$-cycle graph (we use $\vec{c}(L,n)$ for the number of cycles in directed graphs). In the undirected case we show that for any fixed set $L$, we have $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n^{\lfloor k/\ell \rfloor})$ where $k$ is the largest element of $L$ and $2\ell$ is the smallest even element of $L$ (if $L$ contains only odd elements, then $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n)$ holds.) We also give a characterization of $L$-cycle graphs when $L$ is a single element. In the directed case we prove that for any fixed set $L$ we have $\vec{c}(L,n)=(1+o(1))(\frac{n-1}{k-1})^{k-1}$, where $k$ is the largest element of $L$. We determine the exact value of $\vec{c}(\{k\},n)$ for every $k$ and characterize all graphs attaining this maximum.

Abstract:We prove a refinement of the flat wall theorem of Robertson and Seymour to undirected group-labelled graphs $(G,\gamma)$ where $\gamma$ assigns to each edge of an undirected graph $G$ an element of an abelian group $\Gamma$. As a consequence, we prove that $\Gamma$-nonzero cycles (cycles whose edges sum to a non-identity element of $\Gamma$) satisfy the half-integral Erdős-Pósa property, and we also recover a result of Wollan that, if $\Gamma$ has no element of order two, then $\Gamma$-nonzero cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property. As another application, we prove that if $m$ is an odd prime power, then cycles of length $\ell \mod m$ satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property for all integers $\ell$. This partially answers a question of Dejter and Neumann-Lara from 1987 on characterizing all such integer pairs $(\ell,m)$.

Cocycles of the space of long embeddings and BCR graphs with more than one loop

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to construct non-trivial cocycles of the space $Emb(\mathbb{R}^j, \mathbb{R}^{n})$ of long embeddings. We construct the cocycles by integral over configuration spaces, associated with Bott-Cattaneo-Rossi graphs with more than one loop. As an application, we give explicitly a non-trivial family of trivial long embeddings for odd $n,j$ with $n-j \geq 2$ and $j \geq 3$. This family (cycle) is constructed from a chord diagram on directed lines. The non-triviality is shown by cocycle-cycle paring, described by paring between graphs and chord diagrams.

Effective Bounds for Induced Size-Ramsey Numbers of Cycles

Abstract:The induced size-Ramsey number of a graph H is the smallest number of edges a (host) graph G can have such that for any k -coloring of its edges, there exists a monochromatic copy of H which is an induced subgraph of G . In 1995, in their seminal paper, Haxell, Kohayakawa and Łuczak showed that for cycles, these numbers are linear for any constant number of colours, i.e., for some . The constant C comes from the use of the regularity lemma, and has a tower type dependence on k . In this paper we significantly improve these bounds, showing that when n is even, thus obtaining only a polynomial dependence of C on k . We also prove for odd n , which almost matches the lower bound of . Finally, we show that the ordinary (non-induced) size-Ramsey number satisfies for odd n . This substantially improves the best previous result of , and is best possible, up to the implied constant in the exponent. To achieve our results, we present a new host graph construction which, roughly speaking, reduces our task to finding a cycle of approximate given length in a graph with local sparsity.

Connectedness and combinatorial interplay in the moduli space of line arrangements

Abstract:This paper aims to undertake an exploration of the behavior of the moduli space of line arrangements while establishing its combinatorial interplay with the incidence structure of the arrangement. In the first part, we investigate combinatorial classes of arrangements whose moduli space is connected. We unify the classes of simple and inductively connected arrangements appearing in the literature. Then, we introduce the notion of arrangements with a rigid pencil form. It ensures the connectedness of the moduli space and is less restrictive that the class of $C_3$ arrangements of simple type. In the last part, we obtain a combinatorial upper bound on the number of connected components of the moduli space. Then, we exhibit examples with an arbitrarily large number of connected components for which this upper bound is sharp.

Abstract:We study the combinatorics of pseudoline arrangements in the real projective plane. Our focus lies on two classes of arrangements: simplicial arrangements and arrangements whose characteristic polynomials have only real roots. We derive inequalities involving the $t$-vectors of the arrangements in consideration. As application, we obtain some finiteness and classification results. Moreover, we are able to prove the Dirac Motzkin Conjecture for real pseudoline arrangements whose charateristic polynomials split over $\mathbb{R}$.

Noether-Lefschetz cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:The locus of non-simple abelian varieties in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties gives rise to Noether-Lefschetz cycles. We study their intersection theoretic properties using the tautological projection constructed in [CMOP24], and show that projection defines a homomorphism when restricted to cycles supported on that locus. Using Hecke correspondences and the pullback by Torelli we prove that $[\mathcal {A}_1 \times \mathcal A_{g-1}]$ is not tautological in the sense of [vdG99] for $g=12$ and $g\geq 16$ even. We also explore the connections between Noether-Lefschetz cycles and the Gromov-Witten theory of a moving elliptic curve.

Abstract:All finite Jacobson graphs with a Hamiltonian cycle or path, or Eulerian tour or trail are determined, and it is shown that a finite Jacobson graph is Hamiltonian if and only if it is pancyclic. Also, the length of the longest induced cycles and paths in finite Jacobson graphs are obtained.

Abstract:Abstract We present various results about the combinatorial properties of line arrangements in terms of the Chern numbers of the corresponding log surfaces. This resembles the study of the geography of surfaces of general type. We prove some new results about the distribution of Chern slopes, we show a connection between their accumulation points and the accumulation points of linear H -constants on the plane, and we conclude with two open problems in relation to geography over Q and over C.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite undirected graph. Orient the edges of $G$ in an arbitrary way. A $2$-cycle on $G$ is a function $d : E^2\to \mathbb{Z}$ such for each edge $e$, $d(e, \cdot)$ and $d(\cdot, e)$ are circulations on $G$, and $d(e, f) = 0$ whenever $e$ and $f$ have a common vertex. We show that each $2$-cycle is a sum of three special types of $2$-cycles: cycle-pair $2$-cycles, Kuratowski $2$-cycles, and quad $2$-cycles. In case that the graph is Kuratowski connected, we show that each $2$-cycle is a sum of cycle-pair $2$-cycles and at most one Kuratowski $2$-cycle. Furthermore, if $G$ is Kuratowski connected, we characterize when every Kuratowski $2$-cycle is a sum of cycle-pair $2$-cycles. A $2$-cycles $d$ on $G$ is skew-symmetric if $d(e,f) = -d(f,e)$ for all edges $e,f\in E$. We show that each $2$-cycle is a sum of two special types of skew-symmetric $2$-cycles: skew-symmetric cycle-pair $2$-cycles and skew-symmetric quad $2$-cycles. In case that the graph is Kuratowski connected, we show that each skew-symmetric $2$-cycle is a sum of skew-symmetric cycle-pair $2$-cycles. Similar results like this had previously been obtained by one of the authors for symmetric $2$-cycles. Symmetric $2$-cycles are $2$-cycles $d$ such that $d(e,f)=d(f,e)$ for all edges $e,f\in E$.

A Hanani-Tutte Theorem for Cycles

Abstract:Given a drawing $D$ of a graph $G$, we define the crossing number between any two cycles $C_{1}$ and $C_{2}$ in $D$ to be the number of crossings that involve at least one edge from each of $C_1$ and $C_2$ except the crossings between edges that are common to both cycles. We show that if the crossing number between every two cycles in $G$ is even in a drawing of $G$ on the plane, then there is a planar drawing of $G$. This result can be extended to arbitrary surfaces. We also establish an equivalence between our result and a fundamental result due to Cairns-Nikolayevsky and Pelsmajer-Schaefer-Štefankovič, about drawing graphs on surfaces, and derive the Loebl-Masbaum theorem from it.

Abstract:Abstract Erdős and Pósa proved in 1965 that there is a duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold if we restrict to odd cycles. However, in 1999, Reed proved an analogue for odd cycles by relaxing packing to half‐integral packing. We prove a far‐reaching generalisation of the theorem of Reed; if the edges of a graph are labelled by finitely many abelian groups, then there is a duality between the maximum size of a half‐integral packing of cycles whose values avoid a fixed finite set for each abelian group and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all such cycles. A multitude of natural properties of cycles can be encoded in this setting, for example, cycles of length at least , cycles of length modulo , cycles intersecting a prescribed set of vertices at least times and cycles contained in given ‐homology classes in a graph embedded on a fixed surface. Our main result allows us to prove a duality theorem for cycles satisfying a fixed set of finitely many such properties.

Tautological projection for cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:We define a tautological projection operator for algebraic cycle classes on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties $\mathcal{A}_g$: every cycle class decomposes canonically as a sum of a tautological and a non-tautological part. The main new result required for the definition of the projection operator is the vanishing of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle over the boundary $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g\smallsetminus \mathcal{A}_g$ of any toroidal compactification $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$. We prove the vanishing by a careful study of residues in the boundary geometry. The existence of the projection operator raises many natural questions about cycles on $\mathcal{A}_g$. We calculate the projections of all product cycles $\mathcal{A}_{g_1}\times \ldots \times \mathcal{A}_{g_\ell}$ in terms of Schur determinants, discuss Faber's earlier calculations related to the Torelli locus, and state several open questions. The Appendix contains a conjecture about the projection of the locus of abelian varieties with real multiplication.

Correspondences acting on constant cycle curves on K3 surfaces

Abstract:Constant cycle curves on a K3 surface $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ have been introduced by Huybrechts (2014) as curves whose points all define the same class in the Chow group. In this paper we study correspondences $Z \subseteq X\times X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ acting on the group $\mbox{ccc}(X)$ of cycles generated by irreducible constant cycle curves. We construct for any $n\geq 2$ and any very ample line bundle $L$ a locus $Z_n(L)\subseteq X\times X$ of expected dimension $2$, which yields a correspondence that acts on $\mbox{ccc}(X)$, when it has the expected dimension. We provide examples of $Z_n(L)$ for low $n$ and exhibit one correspondence different from $Z_n(L)$ acting on $\mbox{ccc}(X)$.

The cycle double cover conjecture from the perspective of percolation theory on iterated line graphs

Abstract:The cycle double cover conjecture is a long standing problem in graph theory, which links local properties, the valency of a vertex and no bridges, and a global property of the graph, being covered by a particular set of cycles. We tackle this problem via an interpretation motivated by notions from percolation theory. Our approach consists in a lift of walks and cycles in $G$ to sets of open and closed edges on $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{L}(G))$, the line graph of the line graph of $G$. We exploit that triangles are preserved by the line graph operator to obtain a one-to-one mapping from walks in the underlying graph $G$ to walks on $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{L}(G))$ minus a certain subset of its triangles. The final argument is then inspired by percolation theory, using and flipping $\lbrace 0,1\rbrace$ labels on the resulting object to open or block specific edges in $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{L}(G))$ to be traversed by a walk. We prove that there is a labeling such that its projection back to $G$ implies a double cycle cover, if $G$ is an simple bridgeless triangle-free cubic graph.

Old and new motivic cycles on Abelian surfaces

Abstract:Collino \cite{colo} discovered indecomposable motivic cycles in the group $H^{2g-1}_{\mathcal M}(J(C),{\mathds Z}(g))$. In an earlier paper we described the construction of some new motivic cycles which can be viewed as a generalization of Collino's cycle when $g=2$. In this paper we show that our new cycles are in fact related to Collino's cycles of higher genus. On one hand this suggests that new cycles are hard to find. On the other, it suggests that the tools developed to study Collino's cycle can be applied to our cycles.

Abstract:For most problems pertaining to perfect matchings, one may restrict attention to matching covered graphs -- that is, connected nontrivial graphs with the property that each edge belongs to some perfect matching. There is extensive literature on these graphs that are also known as $1$-extendable graphs (since each edge extends to a perfect matching) including an ear decomposition theorem due to Lovasz and Plummer. A cycle $C$ of a graph $G$ is conformal if $G-V(C)$ has a perfect matching; such cycles play an important role in the study of perfect matchings, especially when investigating the Pfaffian orientation problem. A matching covered graph $G$ is cycle-extendable if -- for each even cycle $C$ -- the cycle $C$ is conformal, or equivalently, each perfect matching of $C$ extends to a perfect matching of $G$, or equivalently, $C$ is the symmetric difference of two perfect matchings of $G$, or equivalently, $C$ extends to an ear decomposition of $G$. In the literature, these are also known as cycle-nice or as $1$-cycle resonant graphs. Zhang, Wang, Yuan, Ng and Cheng [Discrete Mathematics, 345:7 (2022), 112876] provided a characterization of claw-free cycle-extendable graphs. Guo and Zhang [Discrete Mathematics, 275:1-3 (2004), 151-164] and independently Zhang and Li [Discrete Applied Mathematics, 160:13-14 (2012), 2069-2074], provided characterizations of bipartite planar cycle-extendable graphs. In this paper, we establish a characterization of all planar cycle-extendable graphs -- in terms of $K_2$ and four infinite families.

Abstract:An $L(2,1)$-labeling of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f$ from the vertex set $V(G)$ to the set of nonnegative integers such that the labels on adjacent vertices differ by at least two, and the labels on vertices at distance two differ by at least one. The span of $f$ is the difference between the largest and the smallest numbers of $f(V)$. The $\lambda$-number of $G$, denoted by $\lambda (G)$, is the minimum span over all $L(2,1)$-labelings of $G$. We prove that if $X= C_m\boxtimes^{\sigma_\ell} C_{n}$ is a direct graph bundle with fiber $C_{n}$ and base $C_m$, $n$ is a multiple of 11 and $\ell$ has a form of $\ell =[11k+(-1)^a 4m]\mod n$ or of $\ell =[11k+(-1)^a 3m]\mod n$, where $a\in \{1,2\}$ and $k\in \ZZ$, then $\lambda (X)=10$.
