Abstract:Fireflies flashing in unison is a mesmerizing manifestation of animal collective behavior and an archetype of biological synchrony. To elucidate synchronization mechanisms and inform theoretical models, we recorded the collective display of thousands of Photinus carolinus fireflies in natural swarms, and provide the first spatiotemporal description of the onset of synchronization. At low firefly density, flashes appear uncorrelated. At high density, the swarm produces synchronous flashes within periodic bursts. Using three-dimensional reconstruction, we demonstrate that flash bursts nucleate and propagate across the swarm in a relay-like process. Our results suggest that fireflies interact locally through a dynamic network of visual connections defined by visual occlusion from terrain and vegetation. This model illuminates the importance of the environment in shaping self-organization and collective behavior.

Abstract:We present a biologically plausible dynamics model to simulate swarms of flying insects. Our formulation, which is based on biological conclusions and experimental observations, is designed to simulate large insect swarms of varying densities. We use a hybrid formulation that combines a force-based model to capture different interactions between the insects with a data-driven noise model, and computes collision-free trajectories. We introduce a quantitative metric to evaluate the accuracy of such multi-agent systems and model the inherent noise. We highlight the performance of our dynamics model for simulating large flying swarms of midges, fruit fly, locusts and moths. In practice, our approach can generate many collective behaviors, including aggregation, migration, phase transition, and escape responses, and we highlight the benefits over prior methods.

Abstract:We propose a model for the structure formation of jellyfish swimming based on active Brownian particles. We address the phenomena of counter-current swimming, avoidance of turbulent flow regions and foraging. We motivate corresponding mechanisms from observations of jellyfish swarming reported in the literature and incorporate them into the generic modelling framework. The model characteristics is tested in three paradigmatic flow environments.

Abstract:During mating season, males of synchronous firefly species flash in unison within swarms of thousands of individuals. These strongly-correlated collective displays have inspired numerous mathematical models to explain how global synchronous patterns emerge from local interactions. Yet, experimental data to validate these models remains sparse. To address this gap, we develop a method for three-dimensional tracking of firefly flashes, using a stereoscopic setup of 360-degree cameras. We apply this method to record flashing displays of the North American synchronous species Photinus carolinus in its natural habitat as well as within controlled environments, and obtain the 3D reconstruction of flash occurrences in the swarm. Our results show that even a small number of interacting males synchronize their flashes; however, periodic flash bursts only occur in groups larger than 15 males. Moreover, flash occurrences are correlated over several meters, indicating long-range interactions. While this suggests emergent collective behaviour and cooperation, we identify distinct individual trajectories that hint at additional competitive mechanisms. These reveal possible behavioural differentiation with early flashers being more mobile and flashing longer than late followers. Our experimental technique is inexpensive and easily implemented. It is extensible to tracking light communication in various firefly species and flight trajectories in other insect swarms.

Abstract:Systems of oscillators, whether animate or inanimate, often converge to a state of collective synchrony, when sufficiently interconnected. Twenty years ago, the mathematical study of models of coupled oscillators revealed the possibility for complex phases which exhibit the coexistence of synchronous and asynchronous clusters, since then referred to as “chimera states”. Beyond their recurrence in theoretical models, chimera states have been observed in specifically-designed, non-biological experimental conditions, yet their emergence in nature has remained elusive. Here, we report robust evidence for the occurrence of chimera states in a celebrated realization of natural synchrony: fireflies. In video recordings of collective displays of Photuris frontalis fireflies, we observe, within a single swarm, the spontaneous emergence of different groups flashing with the same periodicity but with a constant time delay between them. From the three-dimensional reconstruction of the swarm, we demonstrate that these states are stable over time and spatially intertwined, but find no evidence of enhanced correlations in their spatial dynamics. We discuss the implications of these findings on the synergy between mathematical models and firefly collective behavior.

Abstract:Insect swarms are common phenomena in nature and therefore have been actively pursued in computer animation. Realistic insect swarm simulation is difficult due to two challenges: high-fidelity behaviors and large scales, which make the simulation practice subject to laborious manual work and excessive trial-and-error processes. To address both challenges, we present a novel data-driven framework, FASTSWARM, to model complex behaviors of flying insects based on real-world data and simulate plausible animations of flying insect swarms. FASTSWARM has a linear time complexity and achieves real-time performance for large swarms. The high-fidelity behavior model of FASTSWARM explicitly takes into consideration the most common behaviors of flying insects, including the interactions among insects such as repulsion and attraction, the self-propelled behaviors such as target following and obstacle avoidance, and other characteristics such as the random movements. To achieve scalability, an energy minimization problem is formed with different behaviors modelled as energy terms, where the minimizer is the desired behavior. The minimizer is computed from the real-world data, which ensures the plausibility of the simulation results. Extensive simulation results and evaluations show that FASTSWARM is versatile in simulating various swarm behaviors, high fidelity measured by various metrics, easily controllable in inducing user controls and highly scalable.
Kinetic description of swarming dynamics with topological interaction and transient leaders

Abstract:In this paper, we present a model describing the collective motion of birds. The model introduces spontaneous changes in direction which are initialized by few agents, here referred as leaders, whose influence act on their nearest neighbors, in the following referred as followers. Starting at the microscopic level, we develop a kinetic model that characterizes the behaviour of large flocks with transient leadership. One significant challenge lies in managing topological interactions, as identifying nearest neighbors in extensive systems can be computationally expensive. To address this, we propose a novel stochastic particle method to simulate the mesoscopic dynamics and reduce the computational cost of identifying closer agents from quadratic to logarithmic complexity using a $k$-nearest neighbours search algorithm with a binary tree. Lastly, we conduct various numerical experiments for different scenarios to validate the algorithm's effectiveness and investigate collective dynamics in both two and three dimensions.

Abstract:In isolation from their peers, Photinus carolinus fireflies flash with no intrinsic period between successive bursts. Yet, when congregating into large mating swarms, these fireflies transition into predictability, synchronizing with their neighbors with a rhythmic periodicity. Here we propose a mechanism for emergence of synchrony and periodicity, and formulate the principle in a mathematical framework. Remarkably, with no fitting parameters, analytic predictions from this simple principle and framework agree strikingly well with data. Next, we add further sophistication to the framework using a computational approach featuring groups of random oscillators via integrate-and-fire interactions controlled by a tunable parameter. This agent-based framework of P. carolinus fireflies interacting in swarms of increasing density also shows quantitatively similar phenomenology and reduces to the analytic framework in the appropriate limit of the tunable coupling strength. We discuss our findings and note that the resulting dynamics follow the style of a decentralized follow-the-leader synchronization, where any of the randomly flashing individuals may take the role of the leader of any subsequent synchronized flash burst.

Abstract:We present a biologically plausible dynamics model to simulate swarms of flying insects. Furthermore, we model the noise as a constructive force at the collective level and present a technique to generate noise-induced insect movements in a large swarm that are similar to those observed in real-world trajectories. We use a data-driven formulation that is based on pre-recorded insect trajectories. We also present a novel evaluation metric and a statistical validation approach that takes into account various characteristics of insect motions. In practice, the combination of Curl noise function with our dynamics model is used to generate realistic swarm simulations and emergent behaviors. We highlight its performance for simulating large flying swarms of midges, fruit fly, locusts and moths and demonstrate many collective behaviors, including aggregation, migration, phase transition, and escape responses.
Power laws of natural swarms as fingerprints of an extended critical region

Abstract:Collective biological systems display power laws for macroscopic quantities and are fertile probing grounds for statistical physics. Besides power laws, natural insect swarms present strong scale-free correlations, suggesting closeness to phase transitions. Swarms exhibit imperfect dynamic scaling: their dynamical correlation functions collapse into single curves when written as functions of the scaled time tξ−z ( ξ : correlation length, z : dynamic exponent), but only for short times. Triggered by markers, natural swarms are not invariant under space translations. Measured static and dynamic critical exponents differ from those of equilibrium and many nonequilibrium phase transitions. Here we show the following: (i) The recently discovered scale-free-chaos phase transition of the harmonically confined Vicsek model has a novel extended critical region for N (finite) insects that contains several critical lines. (ii) As alignment noise vanishes, there are power laws connecting critical confinement and noise that allow calculating static critical exponents for fixed N . These power laws imply that the unmeasurable confinement strength is proportional to the perception range measured in natural swarms. (iii) Observations of natural swarms occur at different times and under different atmospheric conditions, which we mimic by considering mixtures of data on different critical lines and N . Abstract:Bacterial swarming is a collective mode of motion in which cells migrate rapidly over surfaces, forming dynamic patterns of whirls and jets. This review presents a physical point of view of swarming bacteria, with an emphasis on the statistical properties of the swarm dynamics as observed in experiments. The basic physical principles underlying the swarm and their relation to contemporary theories of collective motion and active matter are reviewed and discussed in the context of the biological properties of swarming cells. We suggest a paradigm according to which bacteria have optimized some of their physical properties as a strategy for rapid surface translocation. In other words, cells take advantage of favorable physics, enabling efficient expansion that enhances survival under harsh conditions.

Abstract:The globally coordinated motion produced by the classical swarm model is typically generated by simple local interactions at the individual level. Despite the success of these models in interpretation, they cannot guarantee compact and ordered collective motion when applied to the cooperation of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms in cluttered environments. Inspired by the behavioral characteristics of biological swarms, a distributed self-organized Reynolds (SOR) swarm model of UAVs is proposed. In this model, a social term is designed to keep the swarm in a collision-free, compact, and ordered collective motion, an obstacle avoidance term is introduced to make the UAV avoid obstacles with a smooth trajectory, and a migration term is added to make the UAV fly in a desired direction. All the behavioral rules for agent interactions are designed with as simple a potential function as possible. And the genetic algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of the model. To evaluate the collective performance, we introduce different metrics such as (a) order, (b) safety, (c) inter-agent distance error, (d) speed range. Through the comparative simulation with the current advanced bio-inspired compact and Vasarhelyi swarm models, the proposed approach can guide the UAV swarm to pass through the dense obstacle environment in a safe and ordered manner as a compact group, and has adaptability to different obstacle densities.

Abstract:Swarmalators are oscillators that can swarm as well as sync via a dynamic balance between their spatial proximity and phase similarity. Swarmalator models employed so far in the literature comprise only one-dimensional phase variables to represent the intrinsic dynamics of the natural collectives. Nevertheless, the latter can indeed be represented more realistically by high-dimensional phase variables. For instance, the alignment of velocity vectors in a school of fish or a flock of birds can be more realistically set up in three-dimensional space, while the alignment of opinion formation in population dynamics could be multidimensional, in general. We present a generalized D -dimensional swarmalator model, which more accurately captures self-organizing behaviors of a plethora of real-world collectives by self-adaptation of high-dimensional spatial and phase variables. For a more sensible visualization and interpretation of the results, we restrict our simulations to three-dimensional spatial and phase variables. Our model provides a framework for modeling complicated processes such as flocking, schooling of fish, cell sorting during embryonic development, residential segregation, and opinion dynamics in social groups. We demonstrate its versatility by capturing the maneuvers of a school of fish, qualitatively and quantitatively, by a suitable extension of the original model to incorporate appropriate features besides a gallery of its intrinsic self-organizations for various interactions. Swarming in viscous fluids: three-dimensional patterns in swimmer- and force-induced flows

Abstract:We derive from first principles a three-dimensional theory of self-propelled particle swarming in a viscous fluid environment. Our model predicts emergent collective behavior that depends critically on fluid opacity, mechanism of self-propulsion, and type of particle-particle interaction. In "clear fluids" swimmers have full knowledge of their surroundings and can adjust their velocities with respect to the lab frame, while in "opaque fluids," they control their velocities only in relation to the local fluid flow. We also show that "social" interactions that affect only a particle's propensity to swim towards or away from neighbors induces a flow field that is qualitatively different from the long-ranged flow fields generated by direct "physical" interactions. The latter can be short-ranged but lead to much longer-ranged fluid-mediated hydrodynamic forces, effectively amplifying the range over which particles interact. These different fluid flows conspire to profoundly affect swarm morphology, kinetically stabilizing or destabilizing swarm configurations that would arise in the absence of fluid. Depending upon the overall interaction potential, the mechanism of swimming (e.g., pushers or pullers), and the degree of fluid opaqueness, we discover a number of new collective three-dimensional patterns including flocks with prolate or oblate shapes, recirculating peloton-like structures, and jet-like fluid flows that entrain particles mediating their escape from the center of mill-like structures. Our results reveal how the interplay among general physical elements influence fluid-mediated interactions and the self-organization, mobility, and stability of new three-dimensional swarms and suggest how they might be used to kinetically control their collective behavior.

Abstract:We discuss the collective dynamics of self-propelled particles with selective attraction and repulsion interactions. Each particle, or individual, may respond differently to its neighbors depending on the sign of their relative velocity. Thus, it is able to distinguish approaching (coming closer) and moving away individuals. This differentiation of the social response is motivated by the response to looming visual stimuli and may be seen as a generalization of the previously proposed, biologically motivated, escape and pursuit interactions. The model can account for different types of behavior such as pure attraction, pure repulsion, or escape and pursuit depending on the values (signs) of the different response strengths, and provides, in the light of recent experimental results, an interesting alternative to previously proposed models of collective motion with an explicit velocity-alignment interaction. We show the onset of large scale collective motion in a subregion of the parameter space, which corresponds to an effective escape and/or pursuit response. Furthermore, we discuss the observed spatial patterns and show how kinetic description of the dynamics can be derived from the individual based model.

Optimal collision avoidance in swarms of active Brownian particles

Abstract:The effectiveness of collective navigation of biological or artificial agents requires to accommodate for contrasting requirements, such as staying in a group while avoiding close encounters and at the same time limiting the energy expenditure for manoeuvring. Here, we address this problem by considering a system of active Brownian particles in a finite two-dimensional domain and ask what is the control that realizes the optimal tradeoff between collision avoidance and control expenditure. We couch this problem in the language of optimal stochastic control theory and by means of a mean-field game approach we derive an analytic mean-field solution, characterized by a second-order phase transition in the alignment order parameter. We find that a mean-field version of a classical model for collective motion based on alignment interactions (Vicsek model) performs remarkably close to the optimal control. Our results substantiate the view that observed group behaviors may be explained as the result of optimizing multiple objectives and offer a theoretical ground for biomimetic algorithms used for artificial agents.

Abstract:Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, Ahead of Print. This paper presents a mathematical theory of behavioral swarms, where the state of interacting entities, which are called active particles, includes in addition to position and velocity, an internal variable, called activity, which has the ability to interact with mechanical variables thus affecting the interaction rules. In turn, the mechanical variables can modify the dynamics of activity variable. This approach is useful for describing the dynamics of living systems with a finite number of interacting entities. This paper provides a general conceptual framework that extends the pioneering work [N. Bellomo, S.-Y. Ha and N. Outada, Towards a mathematical theory of behavioral swarms, ESAIM: Control Theory Var. Calculus 26 (2020) 125, https://doi.org/10.1051/cocv/2020071]. The theory is firstly developed for the constant number of active particles. Then, it is considered for the case of particles tending to infinity. This theory is useful for describing the dynamics of living systems. Therefore, it provides the conceptual basis for developing a mathematical theory of behavioral swarms, which naturally lead to the study of a theory of swarm intelligence. A study of the dynamics of swarms shows how the theory can be applied to real world collective dynamics.

Abstract:The collective behavior of swarms is extremely difficult to estimate or predict, even when the local agent rules are known and simple. The presented work seeks to leverage the similarities between fluids and swarm systems to generate a thermodynamics-inspired characterization of the collective behavior of robotic swarms. While prior works have borrowed tools from fluid dynamics to design swarming behaviors, they have usually avoided the task of generating a fluids-inspired macroscopic state (or macrostate) description of the swarm. This work will bridge the gap by seeking to answer the following question: is it possible to generate a small set of thermodynamics-inspired macroscopic properties that may later be used to quantify all possible collective behaviors of swarm systems? In this paper, we present three macroscopic properties analogous to pressure, temperature, and density of a gas, to describe the behavior of a swarm that is governed by only attractive and repulsive agent interactions. These properties are made to satisfy an equation similar to the ideal gas law, and also generalized to satisfy the virial equation of state for real gases. Finally, we investigate how swarm specifications such as density and average agent velocity affect the system macrostate.

Kinetic description and macroscopic limit of swarming dynamics with continuous leader-follower transitions

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a kinetic description of swarming particle dynamics in an interacting multi-agent system featuring emerging leaders and followers. Agents are classically characterized by their position and velocity plus a continuous parameter quantifying their degree of leadership. The microscopic processes ruling the change of velocity and degree of leadership are independent, non-conservative and non-local in the physical space, so as to account for long-range interactions. Out of the kinetic description, we obtain then a macroscopic model under a hydrodynamic limit reminiscent of that used to tackle the hydrodynamics of weakly dissipative granular gases, thus relying in particular on a regime of small non-conservative and short-range interactions. Numerical simulations in one- and two-dimensional domains show that the limiting macroscopic model is consistent with the original particle dynamics and furthermore can reproduce classical emerging patterns typically observed in swarms.
