Wreathing, Discrete Gauging, and Non-invertible Symmetries

Abstract:'t Hooft anomalies of discrete global symmetries and gaugings thereof have rich mathematical structures and far-reaching physical consequences. We examine each subgroup $G$, up to automorphisms, of the permutation group $S_4$ that acts on the four legs of the affine $D_4$ quiver diagram, which is mirror dual to the 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gauge theory with four flavours. These actions are studied in terms of how each permutation cycle acts on the superconformal index of the theory in question. We present a prescription for refining the index with respect to the fugacities associated with the Abelian discrete symmetries that are subgroups of $G$. This allows us to study sequential gauging of various subgroups of $G$ and construct symmetry webs. We study the effects of 't Hooft anomalies and non-invertible symmetries that arise from discrete gauging on the index. When the whole symmetry $G$ is gauged, our results are in perfect agreement with a type of discrete operations on the quiver, known as wreathing, discussed in the literature. We provide a general prescription for computing the index for any wreathed quivers that contain unitary or special unitary gauge groups. We demonstrate this in an example of the 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $\mathrm{U}(N)$ gauge theory with $n$ flavours and compare the results with gauging the charge conjugation symmetry associated with the flavour symmetry of such a theory.

Gauge origami and quiver W-algebras III: Donaldson--Thomas $qq$-characters

Abstract:We further develop the BPS/CFT correspondence between quiver W-algebras/$qq$-characters and partition functions of gauge origami. We introduce $qq$-characters associated with multi-dimensional partitions with nontrivial boundary conditions which we call Donaldson--Thomas (DT) $qq$-characters. They are operator versions of the equivariant DT vertices of toric Calabi--Yau three and four-folds. Moreover, we revisit the construction of the D8 $qq$-characters with no boundary conditions and give a quantum algebraic derivation of the sign rules of the magnificent four partition function. We also show that under the proper sign rules, the D6 and D8 $qq$-characters with no boundary conditions all commute with each other and discuss its physical interpretation.

Abstract:We develop a $\mathtt{q}$-analogue of the theory of conjugation equivariant $\mathcal D$-modules on a complex reductive group $G$. In particular, we define quantum Hotta-Kashiwara modules and compute their endomorphism algebras. We use the Schur-Weyl functor of the second author, and develop tools from the corresponding double affine Hecke algebra to study this category in the cases $G=GL_N$ and $SL_N$. Our results also have an interpretation in skein theory (explored further in a sequel paper), namely a computation of the $GL_N$ and $SL_N$-skein algebra of the 2-torus.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that for a finite quiver $Q$ the equivalence class of a potential up to formal change of variables of the complete path algebra $\widehat{\mathbb{C} Q}$, is determined by its Jacobi algebra together with the class in its 0-th Hochschild homology represented by the potential assuming the Jacobi algebra is finite dimensional. This is an noncommutative analogue of the famous theorem of Mather and Yau on isolated hypersurface singularities. We also prove that the right equivalence class of a potential is determined by its sufficiently high jet assuming the Jacobi algebra is finite dimensional. These two theorems can be viewed as a first step towards the singularity theory of noncommutative power series. As an application, we show that if the Jacobi algebra is finite dimensional then the corresponding complete Ginzburg dg-algebra, and the (topological) generalized cluster category thereof, are determined by the isomorphic type of the Jacobi algebra together with the class in its 0-th Hochschild homology represented by the potential.

Abstract:We discuss a set of recently discovered quadratic relations between gauge theory amplitudes. Such relations give additional structural simplifications for amplitudes in QCD. Remarkably, their origin lie in an analogous set of relations that involve also gravitons. When certain gluon helicities are flipped we obtain relations that do not involve gravitons, but which refer only to QCD.

Abstract:We explore the quantum algebraic formalism of the gauge origami system in $\mathbb{C}^{4}$, where D2/D4/D6/D8-branes are present. We demonstrate that the contour integral formulas have free field interpretations, leading to the operator formalism of $qq$-characters associated with each D-brane. The $qq$-characters of D2 and D4-branes correspond to screening charges and generators of the affine quiver W-algebra, respectively. On the other hand, the $qq$-characters of D6 and D8-branes represent novel types of $qq$-characters, where monomial terms are characterized by plane partitions and solid partitions. The composition of these $qq$-characters yields the instanton partition functions of the gauge origami system, eventually establishing the BPS/CFT correspondence.

Realizing triality and $p$-ality by lattice twisted gauging in (1+1)d quantum spin systems

Abstract:In this paper, we study the twisted gauging on the (1+1)d lattice and construct various non-local mappings on the lattice operators. To be specific, we define the twisted Gauss law operator and implement the twisted gauging of the finite group on the lattice motivated by the orbifolding procedure in the conformal field theory, which involves the data of non-trivial element in the second cohomology group of the gauge group. We show the twisted gauging is equivalent to the two-step procedure of first applying the SPT entangler and then untwisted gauging. We use the twisted gauging to construct the triality (order 3) and $p$-ality (order $p$) mapping on the $\mathbb{Z}_p\times \mathbb{Z}_p$ symmetric Hamiltonians, where $p$ is a prime. Such novel non-local mappings generalize Kramers-Wannier duality and they preserve the locality of symmetric operators but map charged operators to non-local ones. We further construct quantum process to realize these non-local mappings and analyze the induced mappings on the phase diagrams. For theories that are invariant under these non-local mappings, they admit the corresponding non-invertible symmetries. The non-invertible symmetry will constrain the theory at the multicritical point between the gapped phases. We further give the condition when the non-invertible symmetry can have symmetric gapped phase with a unique ground state.

Generalised-Edged Quivers and Global Forms

Abstract:Non-simply laced quivers, despite the lack of complete Lagrangian descriptions, play an important role in characterising moduli spaces of supersymmetric field theories. Notably, the moduli space of instantons in non-simply laced gauge groups can be understood by means of such quivers. We generalise the notion of non-simply laced unitary quivers to those whose edges carry two labels $(p,q)$, dubbed $(p,q)$-edged quivers. The special case of $(p,1)$ corresponds to a conventional non-simply laced edge studied in the literature. In the case of unframed $(p,q)$-edged quivers, we show how to parametrise the lattice of magnetic fluxes upon ungauging the decoupled $\mathrm{U}(1)$, and how one can pick sublattices thereof corresponding to different global forms of the quiver related by discrete gauging. This form of discrete gauging can be applied to any unframed unitary quivers, not just ones with generalised edges. We utilise both the Hilbert series and the superconformal index to study moduli spaces and 't Hooft anomalies. In particular, we study mixed 't Hooft anomalies between a one-form symmetry and a zero-form continuous topological symmetry in various $(p,q)$-edged quivers. We also provide an alternative realisation of the moduli space of $\mathfrak{so}(2n+1)$ instantons via gauging discrete symmetries in supersymmetric QCD with a symplectic gauge group and a large number of flavours.

A Kac-Weyl Character Identity

Abstract:An explicit quantization of Chern-Simons theory leads to an identity between sums of the Kac-Weyl characters. One can use this identity to prove inequalities that constrain the fusion coefficients $N_{\mu\nu}^l$ in the case of RCFTs that descend from current algebras. It also leads to a statement regarding the conjugacy symmetry of the sums of squares of fusion coefficients for current algebras admitting complex representations.

Constructing spectral triples over holonomy-diffeomorphisms and the problem of reconciling general relativity with quantum field theory

Abstract:In this paper we construct a candidate for a spectral triple on a quotient space of gauge connections modulo gauge transformations and show that it is related to a Kasparov type bi-module over two canonical algebras: the HD-algebra, which is a non-commutative C*-algebra generated by parallel transports along flows of vector fields, and an exterior algebra on a space of gauge transformations. The latter algebra is related to the ghost sector in a BRST quantisation scheme. Previously we have shown that key elements of bosonic and fermionic quantum field theory on a curved background emerge from a spectral triple of this type. In this paper we show that a dynamical metric on the underlying manifold also emerges from the construction. We first rigorously construct a Dirac type operator on the a quotient space of gauge connections modulo gauge transformations, and discuss the commutator between this Dirac type operator and the HD-algebra. To do this we first construct a gauge-covariant metric on the configuration space and use it to construct the triple. The key step in this construction is to require the volume of the quotient space to be finite, which amounts to an ultra-violet regularisation. Since the metric on the configuration space is dynamical with respect to the time-evolution generated by the Dirac type operator in the triple, it is possible to interpret the regularisation as a physical feature (as opposed to static regularisations, which are always computational artefacts). Finally, we construct a Bott-Dirac operator that connects our construction with quantum Yang-Mills theory.

Abstract:We provide a formalism using the $q$-Cartan matrix to compute the instanton partition function of quiver gauge theory on various manifolds. Applying this formalism to eight dimensional setups, we introduce the notion of double quiver gauge theory characterized by a pair of quivers. We also explore the BPS/CFT correspondence in eight dimensions based on the $q$-Cartan matrix formalism.

Abstract:Conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra have a Coulomb-gas representation as Dotsenko-Fateev integrals over the positions of screening charges. In q -deformed Virasoro, the conformal blocks on a sphere with an arbitrary number of punctures are manifestly the same, when written in Dotsenko-Fateev representation, as the partition functions of a class of 3d U ( N ) gauge theories with supersymmetry, in the -background. Coupling the 3d gauge theory to a flavor in fundamental representation corresponds to inserting a Virasoro vertex operator; the two real mass parameters determine the momentum and position of the puncture. The Dotsenko-Fateev integrals can be computed by residues. The result is the instanton sum of a five dimensional gauge theory. The positions of the poles are labeled by tuples of partitions, the residues of the integrand are the Nekrasov summands.

Abstract:We explore an identity between two branching graphs and propose a physical meaning in the context of the gauge-gravity correspondence. From the mathematical point of view, the identity equates probabilities associated with $\mathbb{GT}$, the branching graph of the unitary groups, with probabilities associated with $\mathbb{Y}$, the branching graph of the symmetric groups. In order to furnish the identity with physical meaning, we exactly reproduce these probabilities as the square of three point functions involving certain hook-shaped backgrounds. We study these backgrounds in the context of LLM geometries and discover that they are domain walls interpolating two AdS spaces with different radii. We also find that, in certain cases, the probabilities match the eigenvalues of some observables, the embedding chain charges. We finally discuss a holographic interpretation of the mathematical identity through our results.

Non-Perturbative Schwinger-Dyson Equations for 3d ${\cal N} = 4$ Gauge Theories

Abstract:We analyze symmetries corresponding to separated topological sectors of 3d ${\cal} N=4$ gauge theories with Higgs vacua, compactified on a circle. The symmetries are encoded in Schwinger-Dyson identities satisfied by correlation functions of a certain gauge-invariant operator, the "vortex character." Such a character observable is realized as the vortex partition function of the 3d gauge theory, in the presence of a 1/2-BPS line defect. The character enjoys a double refinement, interpreted as a deformation of the usual characters of finite-dimensional representations of quantum affine algebras. We derive and interpret the Schwinger-Dyson identities for the 3d theory from various physical perspectives: in the 3d gauge theory itself, in a 1d gauged quantum mechanics, in 2d $q$-Toda theory, and in 6d little string theory. We establish the dictionary between all approaches. Lastly, we comment on the transformation properties of the vortex character under the action of three-dimensional Seiberg duality.

Motivic Gauss and Jacobi sums

Abstract:We study the Gauss and Jacobi sums from a viewpoint of motives. We exhibit isomorphisms between Chow motives arising from the Artin-Schreier curve and the Fermat varieties over a finite field, that can be regarded as (and yield a new proof of) classically known relations among Gauss and Jacobi sums such as Davenport-Hasse's multiplication formula. As a key step, we define motivic analogues of the Gauss and Jacobi sums as algebraic correspondences, and show that they represent the Frobenius endomorphisms of such motives. This generalizes Coleman's result for curves. These results are applied to investigate the group of invertible Chow motives with coefficients in a cyclotomic field.

Abstract:Singularity of the gauge condition n⋅∂n⋅A=0 at n⋅k=0 is studied here. Such singularity is different from that in axial gauge and can not be regularized through analytical continuation method. It is proved that construction of continuous and well defined gauge links is obstructed by the Gribov ambiguity. Thus continuous gauge conditions which are free from the Gribov ambiguity are essential in studies on nonlocal gauge invariant objects. The Faddeev-Popov determinant of the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0, which is solved explicitly here, behaves like a δ-functional of gauge potentials once singularities in the functional integral is neglected and the length of the space along nμ direction tends to infinity. As a sequence, perturbation series in the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0 are equivalent to those in axial gauge for objects which are free from these singularities. However, the equivalence between the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0 and axial gauge is nontrivial for objects suffering from these singularities. It is also demonstrated through explicit calculations that the equivalence for long distance objects is not the case in general, especially lattice calculations show significant distinctions among the axial gauge n⋅A=0, the Landau gauge ∂⋅A=0 and the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0 for long distance objects.

Noncommutative metric geometry of quantum circle bundles

Abstract:In this paper we investigate quantum circle bundles from the point of view of compact quantum metric spaces. The raw input data is a circle action on a unital $C^*$-algebra together with a quantum metric of spectral geometric origin on the fixed point algebra. Under a few extra conditions on the spectral subspaces we show that the spectral geometric data on the base algebra can be lifted to the total algebra. Notably, the lifted spectral geometry is independent of the choice of frames and is permitted to interact with the total algebra via a twisted derivation. Under these conditions, it is explained how to assemble our data into a quantum metric on the total algebra in a way which unifies and generalizes a couple of results in the literature relating to crossed products by the integers and to quantum $SU(2)$. We apply our ideas to the higher Vaksman-Soibelman quantum spheres and endow them with quantum metrics arising from $q$-geometric data. In this context, the twist is enforced by the structure of the Drinfeld-Jimbo deformation arising from the Lie algebra of the special unitary group.

Abstract:The qq-characters are powerful tools to reveal symmetries and integrabilities of Seiberg-Witten theories. The goal of this paper is to provide analytic expressions of qq-characters based on Young diagrams in 5d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ pure Yang-Mills theories with BCD-type gauge groups, by focusing on the unrefined limit. Using these expressions, we investigate the relationships among qq-characters of classical gauge groups. For SO(n) gauge groups, we construct a quantum-toroidal-like algebra via the Ward-identity approach, which allows us to derive the qq-characters.

Abstract:Vielbeins are necessary when coupling General Relativity (GR) to fermionic matter. This enhances the gauge group of GR to include local Lorentz transformations. In view of a reduced phase space formulation of quantum gravity, in this work we completely gauge fix that Lorentz gauge symmetry by using a so-called triangular gauge. Having solved the Gauss constraints already classically opens access to new Hilbert space representations which are free of the complications that otherwise arise due to a non Abelian gauge symmetry. In that sense, a connection formulation as being pursued in Loop Quantum Gravity is no longer the only practicable option and other less dimension dependent representations e.g. based on triads and even metrics suggest themselves. These formulations make it easier to identify states representing non-degenerate quantum geometries and thus to investigate the hypersurface deformation algebra which implicitly assumes non-degeneracy.
