Abstract:We produce canonical sets of right coset representatives for the congruence subgroups $\Gamma_0(N)$, $\Gamma_1(N)$ and $\Gamma(N)$, and prove that the corresponding fundamental domains are connected. We present some pictures and examples at the end.

Abstract: This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.

Abstract:Let G \mathsf G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over R \mathbb R , and let C : G → G C: \mathsf G\rightarrow \mathsf G be a fundamental Chevalley involution. We show that for every g ∈ G ( R ) g\in \mathsf G(\mathbb R) , C ( g ) C(g) is conjugate to g − 1 g^{-1} in the group G ( R ) \mathsf G(\mathbb R) . Similar result on the Lie algebras is also obtained.

(a) For all connected compact Lie groups H and all continuous homomorphisms phi, phi' V H -> G, if phi(h) and phi'(h) are conjugate in G for all h epsilon H, then phi and phi' are G-conjugate. (b) The Lie algebra of G contains no simple ideal of type D-n (n >= 4), E-6, E-7, or E-8.

Abstract:The congruence subgroup problem for a finitely generated group $\Gamma$ and $G\leq Aut(\Gamma)$ asks whether the map $\hat{G}\to Aut(\hat{\Gamma})$ is injective, or more generally, what is its kernel $C\left(G,\Gamma\right)$? Here $\hat{X}$ denotes the profinite completion of $X$. In the case $G=Aut(\Gamma)$ we denote $C\left(\Gamma\right)=C\left(Aut(\Gamma),\Gamma\right)$. Let $\Gamma$ be a finitely generated group, $\bar{\Gamma}=\Gamma/[\Gamma,\Gamma]$, and $\Gamma^{*}=\bar{\Gamma}/tor(\bar{\Gamma})\cong\mathbb{Z}^{(d)}$. Denote $Aut^{*}(\Gamma)=\textrm{Im}(Aut(\Gamma)\to Aut(\Gamma^{*}))\leq GL_{d}(\mathbb{Z})$. In this paper we show that when $\Gamma$ is nilpotent, there is a canonical isomorphism $C\left(\Gamma\right)\simeq C(Aut^{*}(\Gamma),\Gamma^{*})$. In other words, $C\left(\Gamma\right)$ is completely determined by the solution to the classical congruence subgroup problem for the arithmetic group $Aut^{*}(\Gamma)$. In particular, in the case where $\Gamma=\Psi_{n,c}$ is a finitely generated free nilpotent group of class $c$ on $n$ elements, we get that $C(\Psi_{n,c})=C(\mathbb{Z}^{(n)})=\{e\}$ whenever $n\geq3$, and $C(\Psi_{2,c})=C(\mathbb{Z}^{(2)})=\hat{F}_{\omega}$ = the free profinite group on countable number of generators.

Wedge product matrices and orbits of principal congruence subgroups

Abstract:The orbits in $\Gamma_{\infty}(3) \backslash \Gamma(3)$ are in bijection with sets of invariants satisfying certain relations. We explain how wedge product matrices give an alternative definition of the invariants of matrix orbits. This new method provides the possibility of performing similar computations with other congruence subgroups and arbitrary $n \times n$ matrices. Using Steinberg's refined version of the Bruhat decomposition, we construct an explicit choice of coset representative for each orbit in the orbit space $\Gamma_{\infty}(3) \backslash \Gamma(3)$ of $3 \times 3$ matrices over the PID of Eisenstein integers.

Abstract:A super-modular category is a unitary premodular category with Muger center equivalent to the symmetric unitary category of super-vector spaces. Super-modular categories are important alternatives to modular categories as any unitary premodular category is the equivariantization of a either a modular or super-modular category. Physically, super-modular categories describe universal properties of quasiparticles in fermionic topological phases of matter. In general one does not have a representation of the modular group SL(2, Z) associated to a super-modular category, but it is possible to obtain a representation of the (index 3) theta-subgroup: Gamma(theta) < SL(2, Z). We study the image of this representation and conjecture a super-modular analogue of the Ng-Schauenburg congruence subgroup theorem for modular categories, namely that the kernel of the Gamma(theta) representation is a congruence subgroup. We prove this conjecture for any super-modular category that is a subcategory of modular category of twice its dimension, i.e., admitting a minimal modular extension. Conjecturally, every super-modular category admits (precisely 16) minimal modular extensions and our conjecture would be a consequence.
Congruence subgroups and crystallographic quotients of small Coxeter groups

Abstract:Small Coxeter groups are precisely the ones for which the Tits representation is integral, which makes the study of their congruence subgroups relevant. The symmetric group $S_n$ has three natural extensions, namely, the braid group $B_n$, the twin group $T_n$ and the triplet group $L_n$. The latter two groups are small Coxeter groups, and play the role of braid groups under the Alexander-Markov correspondence for appropriate knot theories, with their pure subgroups admitting suitable hyperplane arrangements as Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. In this paper, we prove that the congruence subgroup property fails for infinite small Coxeter groups which are not virtually abelian. As an application, we deduce that the congruence subgroup property fails for both $T_n$ and $L_n$ when $n \ge 4$. We also determine subquotients of principal congruence subgroups of $T_n$, and identify the pure twin group $PT_n$ and the pure triplet group $PL_n$ with suitable principal congruence subgroups. Further, we investigate crystallographic quotients of these two families of small Coxeter groups, and prove that $T_n /PT_n^{'}$, $T_n/T_n^{''}$ and $L_n /PL_n^{'}$ are crystallographic groups. We also determine crystallographic dimensions of these groups and identify the holonomy representation of $T_n/T_n^{''}$.

A congruence subgroup property for symmetric mapping class groups

Abstract:We prove the congruence subgroup property for the centralizer of a finite subgroup $G$ in the mapping class group of a hyperbolic oriented and connected surface of finite topological type $S$ such that the genus of the quotient surface $S/G$ is at most $2$. As an application, we show that torsion elements in the mapping class group of a surface of genus $\leq 2$ are conjugacy distinguished.

Central extensions of preordered groups

Abstract:We prove that the category of preordered groups contains two full reflective subcategories that give rise to some interesting Galois theories. The first one is the category of the so-called commutative objects, which are precisely the preordered groups whose group law is commutative. The second one is the category of abelian objects, that turns out to be the category of monomorphisms in the category of abelian groups. We give a precise description of the reflector to this subcategory, and we prove that it induces an admissible Galois structure and then a natural notion of categorical central extension. We then characterize the central extensions of preordered groups in purely algebraic terms: these are shown to be the central extensions of groups having the additional property that their restriction to the positive cones is a special homogeneous surjection of monoids.

Abstract:This paper enriches the list of properties of the congruence sequences starting from the universal relation and successively performing the operations of lower $t$ and lower $k$. Three classes of completely regular semigroups, namely semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, semigroups for which $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and semigroups for which $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, are studied. $((\omega_t)_k)_t$, $((\mathcal{D}_t)_k)_t$ and $((\omega_k)_t)_k$ are found to be the least congruences on $S$ such that the quotient semigroups are semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, respectively. The results obtained present a response to three problems in Petrich and Reilly's textbook \textquoteleft\textquoteleft Completely Regular Semigroups\textquoteright\textquoteright.
Finite subgroups of the profinite completion of good groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a residually finite, good group of finite virtual cohomological dimension. We prove that the natural monomorphism $G\hookrightarrow\hat{G}$ induces a bijective correspondence between conjugacy classes of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ and those of its profinite completion $\hat{G}$. Moreover, we prove that the centralizers and normalizers in $\hat{G}$ of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ are the closures of the respective centralizers and normalizers in $G$. With somewhat more restrictive hypotheses, we prove the same results for finite solvable subgroups of $G$. In the last section, we give a few applications of this theorem to hyperelliptic mapping class groups and virtually compact special toral relatively hyperbolic groups (these include fundamental groups of $3$-orbifolds and of uniform standard arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds).

Abstract:We prove that the virtually cyclic (geometric) dimension of the finite index congruence subgroup $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ is $2N-2$. From this we deduce the virtually cyclic dimension of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ is finite. Along the way we prove Lück's property (C) holds for $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$, we prove that the commensurator of a cyclic subgroup of $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ equals its centraliser, we give an $\mathrm{IA}_N(3)$ analogue of various exact sequences arising from reduction systems for mapping class groups, and give a near complete description of centralisers of infinite order elements in $\mathrm{IA}_3(3)$.

Abstract:For every natural number $n$ and a fixed prime $p$, we prove a new congruence for the orbifold Euler characteristic of a group. The $p$-adic limit of these congruences as $n$ tends to infinity recovers the Brown-Quillen congruence. We apply these results to mapping class groups and using the Harer-Zagier formula we obtain a family of congruences for Bernoulli numbers. We show that these congruences in particular recover classical congruences for Bernoulli numbers due to Kummer, Voronoi, Carlitz, and Cohen.

Abstract:The congruence subgroup property is established for the modular representations associated to any modular tensor category. This result is used to prove that the kernel of the representation of the modular group on the conformal blocks of any rational, C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebra is a congruence subgroup. In particular, the q-character of each irreducible module is a modular function on the same congruence subgroup. The Galois symmetry of the modular representations is obtained and the order of the anomaly for those modular categories satisfying some integrality conditions is determined.
