Abstract:In the non-uniform sparsest cut problem, we are given a supply graph G and a demand graph D, both with the same set of nodes V. The goal is to find a cut of V that minimizes the ratio of the total capacity on the edges of G crossing the cut over the total demand of the crossing edges of D. In this work, we study the non-uniform sparsest cut problem for supply graphs with bounded treewidth k. For this case, Gupta et al. (ACM STOC, 2013) obtained a 2-approximation with polynomial running time for fixed k, and it remained open the question of whether there exists a c-approximation algorithm for a constant c independent of k, that runs in FPT$$\textsf{FPT}$$ time. We answer this question in the affirmative. We design a 2-approximation algorithm for the non-uniform sparsest cut with bounded treewidth supply graphs that runs in FPT$$\textsf{FPT}$$ time, when parameterized by the treewidth. Our algorithm is based on rounding the optimal solution of a linear programming relaxation inspired by the Sherali-Adams hierarchy. In contrast to the classic Sherali-Adams approach, we construct a relaxation driven by a tree decomposition of the supply graph by including a carefully chosen set of lifting variables and constraints to encode information of subsets of nodes with super-constant size, and at the same time we have a sufficiently small linear program that can be solved in FPT$$\textsf{FPT}$$ time.

Abstract:In 1996, Bodlaender showed the celebrated result that an optimal tree decomposition of a graph of bounded treewidth can be found in linear time. The algorithm is based on an algorithm of Bodlaender and Kloks that computes an optimal tree decomposition given a non-optimal tree decomposition of bounded width. Both algorithms, in particular the second, are hardly accessible. In our review, we present them in a much simpler way than the original presentations. In our description of the second algorithm, we start by explaining how all tree decompositions of subtrees defined by the nodes of the given tree decomposition can be enumerated. We group tree decompositions into equivalence classes depending on the current node of the given tree decomposition, such that it suffices to enumerate one tree decomposition per equivalence class and, for each node of the given tree decomposition, there are only a constant number of classes which can be represented in constant space. Our description of the first algorithm further simplifies Perkovic and Reed's simplification.

Polynomial-time Approximation of Independent Set Parameterized by Treewidth

Abstract:We prove the following result about approximating the maximum independent set in a graph. Informally, we show that any approximation algorithm with a ``non-trivial'' approximation ratio (as a function of the number of vertices of the input graph $G$) can be turned into an approximation algorithm achieving almost the same ratio, albeit as a function of the treewidth of $G$. More formally, we prove that for any function $f$, the existence of a polynomial time $(n/f(n))$-approximation algorithm yields the existence of a polynomial time $O(tw \cdot\log{f(tw)}/f(tw))$-approximation algorithm, where $n$ and $tw$ denote the number of vertices and the width of a given tree decomposition of the input graph. By pipelining our result with the state-of-the-art $O(n \cdot (\log \log n)^2/\log^3 n)$-approximation algorithm by Feige (2004), this implies an $O(tw \cdot (\log \log tw)^3/\log^3 tw)$-approximation algorithm.

Faster Min-Cost Flow and Approximate Tree Decomposition on Bounded Treewidth Graphs

Abstract:We present an algorithm for min-cost flow in graphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, given a tree decomposition of width $\tau$ and size $S$, and polynomially bounded, integral edge capacities and costs, running in $\widetilde{O}(m\sqrt{\tau} + S)$ time. This improves upon the previous fastest algorithm in this setting achieved by the bounded-treewidth linear program solver by [Dong-Lee-Ye,21] and [Gu-Song,22], which runs in $\widetilde{O}(m \tau^{(\omega+1)/2})$ time, where $\omega \approx 2.37$ is the matrix multiplication exponent. Our approach leverages recent advances in structured linear program solvers and robust interior point methods (IPM). For general graphs where treewidth is trivially bounded by $n$, the algorithm runs in $\widetilde{O}(m \sqrt n)$ time, which is the best-known result without using the Lee-Sidford barrier or $\ell_1$ IPM, demonstrating the surprising power of robust interior point methods. As a corollary, we obtain a $\widetilde{O}(\operatorname{tw}^3 \cdot m)$ time algorithm to compute a tree decomposition of width $O(\operatorname{tw}\cdot \log(n))$, given a graph with $m$ edges.

Abstract:We prove an approximate max-multiflow min-multicut theorem for bounded treewidth graphs. In particular, we show the following: Given a treewidth-$r$ graph, there exists a (fractional) multicommodity flow of value $f$, and a multicut of capacity $c$ such that $ f \leq c \leq \mathcal{O}(\ln (r+1)) \cdot f$. It is well known that the multiflow-multicut gap on an $r$-vertex (constant degree) expander graph can be $\Omega(\ln r)$, and hence our result is tight up to constant factors. Our proof is constructive, and we also obtain a polynomial time $\mathcal{O}(\ln (r+1))$-approximation algorithm for the minimum multicut problem on treewidth-$r$ graphs. Our algorithm proceeds by rounding the optimal fractional solution to the natural linear programming relaxation of the multicut problem. We introduce novel modifications to the well-known region growing algorithm to facilitate the rounding while guaranteeing at most a logarithmic factor loss in the treewidth.

Abstract:We give the first polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the Steiner forest problem on planar graphs and, more generally, on graphs of bounded genus. As a first step, we show how to build a Steiner forest spanner for such graphs. The crux of the process is a clustering procedure called prize-collecting clustering that breaks down the input instance into separate subinstances which are easier to handle; moreover, the terminals in different subinstances are far from each other. Each subinstance has a relatively inexpensive Steiner tree connecting all its terminals, and the subinstances can be solved (almost) separately. Another building block is a PTAS for Steiner forest on graphs of bounded treewidth. Surprisingly, Steiner forest is NP-hard even on graphs of treewidth 3. Therefore, our PTAS for bounded treewidth graph needs a nontrivial combination of approximation arguments and dynamic programming on the tree decomposition. We further show that Steiner forest can be solved in polynomial time for series-parallel graphs (graphs of treewidth at most two) by a novel combination of dynamic programming and minimum cut computations, completing our thorough complexity study of Steiner forest in the range of bounded treewidth graphs, planar graphs, and bounded genus graphs.

Abstract:Treewidth is a useful tool in designing graph algorithms. Although many NP-hard graph problems can be solved in linear time when the input graphs have small treewidth, there are problems which remain hard on graphs of bounded treewidth. In this paper, we consider three vertex selection problems that are W[1]-hard when parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph, namely the capacitated vertex cover problem, the target set selection problem and the vector dominating set problem. We provide two new methods to obtain FPT approximation algorithms for these problems. For the capacitated vertex cover problem and the vector dominating set problem, we obtain $(1+o(1))$-approximation FPT algorithms. For the target set selection problem, we give an FPT algorithm providing a tradeoff between its running time and the approximation ratio.

Abstract:We present a simple, self-contained, linear reduction from 3-SAT to Treewidth. Specifically, it shows that 1.00005-approximating Treewidth is NP-hard, and solving Treewidth exactly requires $2^{\Omega(n)}$ time, unless the Exponential-Time Hypothesis fails. We further derive, under the latter assumption, that there is some constant $\delta > 1$ such that $\delta$-approximating Treewidth requires time $2^{n^{1-o(1)}}$.

Abstract:We revisit a graph width parameter that we dub bipartite treewidth, along with its associated graph decomposition that we call bipartite tree decomposition. Bipartite treewidth can be seen as a common generalization of treewidth and the odd cycle transversal number. Intuitively, a bipartite tree decomposition is a tree decomposition whose bags induce almost bipartite graphs and whose adhesions contain at most one vertex from the bipartite part of any other bag, while the width of such decomposition measures how far the bags are from being bipartite. Adapted from a tree decomposition originally defined by Demaine, Hajiaghayi, and Kawarabayashi [SODA 2010] and explicitly defined by Tazari [Th. Comp. Sci. 2012], bipartite treewidth appears to play a crucial role for solving problems related to odd-minors, which have recently attracted considerable attention. As a first step toward a theory for solving these problems efficiently, the main goal of this paper is to develop dynamic programming techniques to solve problems on graphs of small bipartite treewidth. For such graphs, we provide a number of para-NP-completeness results, FPT-algorithms, and XP-algorithms, as well as several open problems. In particular, we show that $K_t$-Subgraph-Cover, Weighted Vertex Cover/Independent Set, Odd Cycle Transversal, and Maximum Weighted Cut are $FPT$ parameterized by bipartite treewidth. We provide the following complexity dichotomy when $H$ is a 2-connected graph, for each of $H$-Subgraph-Packing, $H$-Induced-Packing, $H$-Scattered-Packing, and $H$-Odd-Minor-Packing problem: if $H$ is bipartite, then the problem is para-NP-complete parameterized by bipartite treewidth while, if $H$ is non-bipartite, then it is solvable in XP-time. We define 1-${\cal H}$-treewidth by replacing the bipartite graph class by any class ${\cal H}$. Most of the technology developed here works for this more general parameter.

A Fast Parallel Branch and Bound Algorithm for Treewidth

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a Fast Parallel Branch and Bound algorithm (FPBB) for computing tree width. FPBB searches the elimination ordering space using depth-first search approach, and employs multithreading techniques to search smaller divided spaces simultaneously. In order to protect the shared hash table without increasing the running time, we have designed a special algorithm for the readers-writers problem. We also present a new heuristic called similar group for refining search space. With other carefully chosen heuristics, FPBB performs well in computing both lower bound and upper bound on tree width, and has solved 17 benchmark graphs whose exact tree widths were previously unknown. Additionally, FPBB is an anytime algorithm, which is insensitive to initial upper bound, and is able to find exact answer quickly. Computational results show that FPBB is significantly faster than the state-of-the-art algorithm proposed by Zhou and Hansen.
Efficient Approximation of Fractional Hypertree Width

Abstract:We give two new approximation algorithms to compute the fractional hypertree width of an input hypergraph. The first algorithm takes as input $n$-vertex $m$-edge hypergraph $H$ of fractional hypertree width at most $\omega$, runs in polynomial time and produces a tree decomposition of $H$ of fractional hypertree width $O(\omega \log n \log \omega)$. As an immediate corollary this yields polynomial time $O(\log^2 n \log \omega)$-approximation algorithms for (generalized) hypertree width as well. To the best of our knowledge our algorithm is the first non-trivial polynomial-time approximation algorithm for fractional hypertree width and (generalized) hypertree width, as opposed to algorithms that run in polynomial time only when $\omega$ is considered a constant. For hypergraphs with the bounded intersection property we get better bounds, comparable with that recent algorithm of Lanzinger and Razgon [STACS 2024]. The second algorithm runs in time $n^{\omega}m^{O(1)}$ and produces a tree decomposition of $H$ of fractional hypertree width $O(\omega \log^2 \omega)$. This significantly improves over the $(n+m)^{O(\omega^3)}$ time algorithm of Marx [ACM TALG 2010], which produces a tree decomposition of fractional hypertree width $O(\omega^3)$, both in terms of running time and the approximation ratio. Our main technical contribution, and the key insight behind both algorithms, is a variant of the classic Menger's Theorem for clique separators in graphs: For every graph $G$, vertex sets $A$ and $B$, family ${\cal F}$ of cliques in $G$, and positive rational $f$, either there exists a sub-family of $O(f \cdot \log^2 n)$ cliques in ${\cal F}$ whose union separates $A$ from $B$, or there exist $f \cdot \log |{\cal F}|$ paths from $A$ to $B$ such that no clique in ${\cal F}$ intersects more than $\log |{\cal F}|$ paths.

Optimal Padded Decomposition For Bounded Treewidth Graphs

Abstract:A $(\beta,\delta,\Delta)$-padded decomposition of an edge-weighted graph $G = (V,E,w)$ is a stochastic decomposition into clusters of diameter at most $\Delta$ such that for every vertex $v\in V$, the probability that $\rm{ball}_G(v,\gamma\Delta)$ is entirely contained in the cluster containing $v$ is at least $e^{-\beta\gamma}$ for every $\gamma \in [0,\delta]$. Padded decompositions have been studied for decades and have found numerous applications, including metric embedding, multicommodity flow-cut gap, muticut, and zero extension problems, to name a few. In these applications, parameter $\beta$, called the padding parameter, is the most important parameter since it decides either the distortion or the approximation ratios. For general graphs with $n$ vertices, $\beta = \Theta(\log n)$. Klein, Plotkin, and Rao showed that $K_r$-minor-free graphs have padding parameter $\beta = O(r^3)$, which is a significant improvement over general graphs when $r$ is a constant. A long-standing conjecture is to construct a padded decomposition for $K_r$-minor-free graphs with padding parameter $\beta = O(\log r)$. Despite decades of research, the best-known result is $\beta = O(r)$, even for graphs with treewidth at most $r$. In this work, we make significant progress toward the aforementioned conjecture by showing that graphs with treewidth $\rm{tw}$ admit a padded decomposition with padding parameter $O(\log \rm{tw})$, which is tight. As corollaries, we obtain an exponential improvement in dependency on treewidth in a host of algorithmic applications: $O(\sqrt{ \log n \cdot \log(\rm{tw})})$ flow-cut gap, max flow-min multicut ratio of $O(\log(\rm{tw}))$, an $O(\log(\rm{tw}))$ approximation for the 0-extension problem, an $\ell^{O(\log n)}_\infty$ embedding with distortion $O(\log \rm{tw})$, and an $O(\log \rm{tw})$ bound for integrality gap for the uniform sparsest cut.

Decentralized Low-Stretch Trees via Low Diameter Graph Decompositions

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 2, Page 247-286, April 2024. We study the problem of approximating the distances in an undirected weighted graph [math] by the distances in trees based on the notion of stretch. Focusing on decentralized models of computation such as the [math], [math], and semi-streaming models, our main results are as follows: (1) We develop a simple randomized algorithm that constructs a spanning tree such that the expected stretch of every edge is [math], where [math] is the number of nodes in [math]. If [math] is unweighted, then this algorithm can be implemented to run in [math] rounds in the [math] model, where [math] is the hop-diameter of [math]; thus our algorithm is asymptotically optimal in this case. In the weighted case, the run-time of the algorithm matches the currently best known bound for exact single source shortest path (SSSP) computations, which despite recent progress is still separated from the lower bound of [math] by polynomial factors. A naive attempt to replace exact SSSP computations with approximate ones in order to improve the complexity in the weighted case encounters a fundamental challenge, as the underlying decomposition technique fails to work under distance approximation. (2) We overcome this obstacle by developing a technique termed blurry ball growing. This technique, in combination with a clever algorithmic idea of Miller, Peng, and Xu (SPAA 2013), allows us to obtain low diameter graph decompositions with small edge cutting probabilities based solely on approximate SSSP computations. (3) Using these decompositions, we in turn obtain metric tree embedding algorithms in the vein of the celebrated work of Bartal (FOCS 1996), whose computational complexity is optimal up to polylogarithmic factors not only in the [math] model but also in the [math] and semi-streaming models. Our embeddings have the additional useful property that the tree can be mapped back to the original graph such that each edge is "used" only logarithmically many times. This property is of interest for capacitated problems and for simulating [math] algorithms on the tree into which the graph is embedded.

Abstract:We present a data structure that for a dynamic graph $G$ that is updated by edge insertions and deletions, maintains a tree decomposition of $G$ of width at most $6k+5$ under the promise that the treewidth of $G$ never grows above $k$. The amortized update time is ${\cal O}_k(2^{\sqrt{\log n}\log\log n})$, where $n$ is the vertex count of $G$ and the ${\cal O}_k(\cdot)$ notation hides factors depending on $k$. In addition, we also obtain the dynamic variant of Courcelle's Theorem: for any fixed property $\varphi$ expressible in the $\mathsf{CMSO}_2$ logic, the data structure can maintain whether $G$ satisfies $\varphi$ within the same time complexity bounds. To a large extent, this answers a question posed by Bodlaender [WG 1993].

Losing Treewidth In The Presence Of Weights

Abstract:In the Weighted Treewidth-$\eta$ Deletion problem we are given a node-weighted graph $G$ and we look for a vertex subset $X$ of minimum weight such that the treewidth of $G-X$ is at most $\eta$. We show that Weighted Treewidth-$\eta$ Deletion admits a randomized polynomial-time constant-factor approximation algorithm for every fixed $\eta$. Our algorithm also works for the more general Weighted Planar $F$-M-Deletion problem. This work extends the results for unweighted graphs by [Fomin, Lokshtanov, Misra, Saurabh; FOCS '12] and answers a question posed by [Agrawal, Lokshtanov, Misra, Saurabh, Zehavi; APPROX/RANDOM '18] and [Kim, Lee, Thilikos; APPROX/RANDOM '21]. The presented algorithm is based on a novel technique of random sampling of so-called protrusions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of computing a geometric embedding of a tree onto a point set in the Euclidean plane such that the total edge length of the embedding is minimum. We present a linear-time O(Δph(T)) -approximation algorithm, where Δ and ph(T) denote the maximum node-degree and the path height of the input tree T , respectively. The previous best result in the literature has O(nlog⁡log⁡n) time-complexity and O(Δlog2⁡n) approximation factor. We show that ph(T) is less than log2⁡n for any n -node tree T . The problem is a generalization of the Euclidean travelling salesman problem, which is a well-known NP-hard problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a problem called Minimum subTree problem with Degree Weights , or MTDW . This problem generalized covering tree problems like Spanning Tree , Steiner Tree , Minimum Branch Vertices , Minimum Leaf Spanning Tree , or Prize Collecting Steiner Tree . It consists, given an undirected graph G=(V,E) , a set of m+1 mappings C1,C2,...,Cm,D:V×N→Z , a set of m integers K1,K2,...,Km∈Z and a positive integer l , in the search of a forest (T1,T2,...,Tl) containing l node-disjoint trees of G . Along with Kj , the mapping Cj defines a constraint that should be satisfied by the trees of the forest. For each tree Ti , it associates each node v of V to the score Cj(v,dTi(v)) where dTi(v) is the degree of v in Ti (possibly 0 if the node is not in Ti ). The sum ∑v∈VCj(v,dTi(v)) should not exceed Kj . In addition, the forest should minimize ∑i=1l∑v∈VD(v,dTi(v)) . We proceed to a parameterized analysis of the MTDW problem with regard to four parameters that are the number of constraints m , the value l , the treewidth of the input graph G and Δ, the minimum degree above which all the constraints and D are constant (for every j∈〚1,m〛 , v∈V and d≥Δ , Cj(v,d)=Cj(v,Δ) , and D(v,d)=D(v,Δ) ). For this problem, we provide a first dichotomy P versus NP -hard depending whether the previous parameters are fixed to be constant or not and a second dichotomy FPT versus W[1] -hard depending whether each of these parameters is constant, considered as a parameter, or disregard. As a side effect, we obtained parameterized algorithms, previously undescribed, for problems such that Budget Steiner Tree problem with Profits , Minimum Branch Vertices , Generalized branch vertices , or k -Bottleneck Steiner Tree .

Abstract:In this paper, we study how to draw trees so that they are planar, straight-line and respect a given order of edges around each node. We focus on minimizing the height, and show that we can always achieve a height of at most 2pw(T)+1, where pw(T) (the so-called pathwidth) is a known lower bound on the height. Hence we give an asymptotic 2-approximation algorithm. We also create a drawing whose height is at most 3pw(T ), but where the width can be bounded by the number of nodes. Finally we construct trees that require height 2pw(T)+1 in all planar order-preserving straight-line drawings.

Abstract:We consider the problem of finding a subgraph of a given graph which minimizes the sum of given functions at vertices evaluated at their subgraph degrees. While the problem is NP-hard already when all functions are the same, we show that it can be solved for arbitrary functions in polynomial time over graphs of bounded treewidth. Its complexity remains widely open, in particular over complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs.

Abstract:Tree decompositions were developed by Robertson and Seymour. Since then algorithms have been developed to solve intractable problems efficiently for graphs of bounded treewidth. In this paper we extend tree decompositions to allow cycles to exist in the decomposition graph; we call these new decompositions plane decompositions because we require that the decomposition graph be planar. First, we give some background material about tree decompositions and an overview of algorithms both for decompositions and for approximations of planar graphs. Then, we give our plane decomposition definition and an algorithm that uses this decomposition to approximate the size of the maximum independent set of the underlying graph in polynomial time.
