Abstract:We develop a new general framework for algebras and clones, called Universal Clone Algebra. Algebras and clones of finitary operations are to Universal Algebra what t-algebras and clone algebras are to Universal Clone Algebra. Clone algebras have been recently introduced to found a one-sorted, purely algebraic theory of clones, while t-algebras are first introduced in this article. We present a method to codify algebras and clones into t-algebras and clone algebras, respectively. We provide concrete examples showing that general results in Universal Clone Algebra, when translated in terms of algebras and clones, give more powerful versions of known theorems in Universal Algebra. We apply this methodology to Birkhoff's HSP theorem and to the recent topological versions of Birkhoff's theorem.

Abstract:Clones of operations of arity (referred to as -operations) have been employed by Neumann to represent varieties of infinitary algebras defined by operations of at most arity . More recently, clone algebras have been introduced to study clones of functions, including -operations, within the framework of one-sorted universal algebra. Additionally, polymorphisms of arity , which are -operations preserving the relations of a given first-order structure, have recently been used to establish model theory results with applications in the field of complexity of CSP problems. In this paper, we undertake a topological and algebraic study of polymorphisms of arity and their corresponding invariant relations. Given a Boolean ideal X on the set , we endow the set of -operations on A with a topology, which we refer to as X -topology. Notably, the topology of pointwise convergence can be retrieved as a special case of this approach. Polymorphisms and invariant relations are then defined parametrically with respect to the X -topology. We characterise the X -closed clones of -operations in terms of - and present a method to relate - to the classical (finitary) - .

Birkhoff's variety theorem for relative algebraic theories

Abstract:An algebraic theory, sometimes called an equational theory, is a theory defined by finitary operations and equations, such as the theories of groups and of rings. It is well known that algebraic theories are equivalent to finitary monads on $\mathbf{Set}$. In this paper, we generalize this phenomenon to locally finitely presentable categories using partial Horn logic. For each locally finitely presentable category $\mathscr{A}$, we define an "algebraic concept" relative to $\mathscr{A}$, which will be called an $\mathscr{A}$-relative algebraic theory, and show that $\mathscr{A}$-relative algebraic theories are equivalent to finitary monads on $\mathscr{A}$. In establishing such equivalence, a generalized Birkhoff's variety theorem plays an important role.

Abstract:In this article, we prove infinitary version of one to one correspondence theorem between clones and relational clones on a fixed possibly infinite set. We also characterize the relational clone corresponding to the clone of all finitary operations. By this characterization, we obtain correspondence between finitary clones on a fixed infinite set and relational clones satisfying some condition.

Abstract:Birkhoff's variety theorem, a fundamental theorem of universal algebra, asserts that a subclass of a given algebra is definable by equations if and only if it satisfies specific closure properties. In a generalized version of this theorem, closure under filtered colimits is required. However, in some special cases, such as finite-sorted equational theories and ordered algebraic theories, the theorem holds without assuming closure under filtered colimits. We call this phenomenon "filtered colimit elimination," and study a sufficient condition for it. We show that if a locally finitely presentable category $\mathscr{A}$ satisfies a noetherian-like condition, then filtered colimit elimination holds in the generalized Birkhoff's theorem for algebras relative to $\mathscr{A}$.

Clones of Borel Boolean Functions

Abstract:We study the lattice of all Borel clones on $2 = \{0,1\}$: classes of Borel functions $f : 2^n \to 2$, $n \le \omega$, which are closed under composition and include all projections. This is a natural extension to countable arities of Post's 1941 classification of all clones of finitary Boolean functions. Every Borel clone restricts to a finitary clone, yielding a "projection" from the lattice of all Borel clones to Post's lattice. It is well-known that each finitary clone of affine mod 2 functions admits a unique extension to a Borel clone. We show that over each finitary clone containing either both $\wedge, \vee$, or the 2-out-of-3 median operation, there lie at least 2 but only finitely many Borel clones. Over the remaining clones in Post's lattice, we give only a partial classification of the Borel extensions, and present some evidence that the full structure may be quite complicated.

Abstract:The concept of variety with IBN (invariant basic number) propriety first appeared in ring theory. But we can define this concept for arbitrary variety of universal algebras with arbitrary signature; see Definition 1.4. The proving of the IBN propriety of some variety is very important in universal algebraic geometry. This is a milestone in the study of the relation between geometric and automorphic equivalences of algebras of this variety. In this paper we prove very simple but very useful for studying of IBN proprieties of different varieties Theorems 2.1 and 3.2. We will consider applications of this theorem. We will consider many-sorted universal algebras as well as one-sorted. So all concepts and all results will by generalized for the many-sorted case.

Abstract:Given a symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix A , for any index k , one can define an automorphism associated with A , of the field Q ( u 1 , ..., u n ) of rational functions of n independent indeterminates u 1 , ..., u n . It is an isomorphism between two cluster algebras associated to the matrix A (see sec. 4 for the precise meaning). When A is of finite type, these isomorphisms behave nicely; they are compatible with the BGP-reflection functors of cluster categories defined in a previous work if we identify the indecomposable objects in the categories with cluster variables of the corresponding cluster algebras, and they are also compatible with the “truncated simple reflections” defined by Fomin-Zelevinsky. Using the construction of preprojective or preinjective modules of hereditary algebras by Dlab-Ringel and the Coxeter automorphisms (i.e. a product of these isomorphisms), we construct infinitely many cluster variables for cluster algebras of infinite type and all cluster variables for finite types.

Abstract:We observe that there exists an associative finite dimensional $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $A$ of finite global dimension, such that the bounded derived category $D^b(A)$ of finite dimensional $A$-modules admits an admissible subcategory $\mathcal{P}$ with vanishing Grothendieck group $K_0(\mathcal{P})$. In other words, $\mathcal{P} \subseteq D^b(A)$ is a phantom. Using tilting theory, this follows directly from a very recent example of a phantom for a smooth rational surface due to Krah. By work of Aihara & Iyama, this also leads to new examples of presilting objects that cannot be completed to silting objects.

The homology of the partition algebras

Abstract:We show that the homology of the partition algebras, interpreted as appropriate Tor-groups, is isomorphic to that of the symmetric groups in a range of degrees that increases with the number of nodes. Furthermore, we show that when the defining parameter $\delta$ of the partition algebra is invertible, the homology of the partition algebra is in fact isomorphic to the homology of the symmetric group in all degrees. These results parallel those obtained for the Brauer algebras in the authors' earlier work, but with significant differences and difficulties in the inductive resolution and high acyclicity arguments required to prove them. Our results join the growing literature on homological stability for algebras, which now encompasses the Temperley-Lieb, Brauer and partition algebras, as well as the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of types A and B.

Abstract:Let k be a perfect field and A a finite dimensional k-algebra of finite global dimension (e.g. the path algebra of a finite quiver without oriented cycles). Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that the value of every additive invariant at A only depends on the number of simple modules. Examples of additive invariants include algebraic K-theory, cyclic homology (and all its variants), topological Hochschild homology, etc. Along the way we establish two results of general interest. The first one concerns the compatibility between bilinear pairings and Galois actions on the Grothendieck group of every proper dg category. The second one is a transfer result in the setting of noncommutative motives.

Abstract:We introduce the categories of infinitesimal Hopf modules and bimodules over an infinitesimal bialgebra. We show that they correspond to modules and bimodules over the infinitesimal version of the double. We show that there is a natural, but non-obvious way to construct a pre-Lie algebra from an arbitrary infinitesimal bialgebra and a dendriform algebra from a quasitriangular infinitesimal bialgebra. As consequences, we obtain a pre-Lie structure on the space of paths on an arbitrary quiver, and a striking dendriform structure on the space of endomorphisms of an arbitrary infinitesimal bialgebra, which combines the convolution and composition products. We extend the previous constructions to the categories of Hopf, pre-Lie and dendriform bimodules. We construct a brace algebra structure from an arbitrary infinitesimal bialgebra; this refines the pre-Lie algebra construction. In two appendices, we show that infinitesimal bialgebras are comonoid objects in a certain monoidal category and discuss a related construction for counital infinitesimal bialgebras.

Abstract:We prove that, given a sufficiently functorial assignment from rings to big Cohen-Macaulay algebras $R \mapsto B$, that the associated big Cohen-Macaulay closure operation on ideals $I \mapsto I B \cap R$ necessarily satisfies the Briançon-Skoda type property. The proof combines arguments of Lipman-Teissier, Hochster, Ma, and Hochster-Huneke. Specializing to mixed characteristic, and utilizing a result of Bhatt on absolute integral closures, this recovers a slight strengthening of a result of Heitmann.

An extension of Birkhoff's representation theorem to infinite distributive lattices

Abstract:Birkhoff's representation theorem for finite distributive lattices states that any finite distributive lattice is isomorphic to the lattice of order ideals (lower sets) of the partial order of the join-irreducible elements of the lattice. This theorem can be extended as follows: A non-finite distributive lattice that is locally finite and has a $\hat{0}$ is isomorphic to the lattice of finite order ideals of the partial order of the join-irreducible elements of the lattice. In addition, certain ``well ordering'' properties are shown to be equivalent to the premises of the extended theorem.

Abstract:This paper provides a systematization of some recent results in homology of algebras. Our main theorem gives criteria under which the homology of a diagram algebra is isomorphic to the homology of the subalgebra on diagrams having the maximum number of left-to-right connections. From this theorem, we deduce the 'invertible-parameter' cases of the Temperley–Lieb and Brauer results of Boyd–Hepworth and Boyd–Hepworth–Patzt. We are also able to give a new proof of Sroka's theorem that the homology of an odd-strand Temperley–Lieb algebra vanishes, as well as an analogous result for Brauer algebras and an interpretation of both results in the even-strand case. Our proofs are relatively elementary: in particular, no auxiliary chain complexes or spectral sequences are required. We briefly discuss the relationship to cellular algebras in the sense of Graham–Lehrer.

Abstract:We develop the ring-theoretic notion of Invariant Basis Number in the context of unital $C^*$-algebras and their Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Characterization of $C^*$-algebras with Invariant Basis Number is given in $K$-theoretic terms, closure properties of the class of $C^*$-algebras with Invariant Basis Number are investigated, and examples of $C^*$-algebras both with and without the property are explored. For $C^*$-algebras without Invariant Basis Number we determine structure in terms of a "Basis Type" and describe a class of $C^*$-algebras which are universal in an appropriate sense. We conclude by investigating properties which are strictly stronger than Invariant Basis Number.
