Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:We describe the Witt invariants of a Weyl group over a field $k_0$ by giving generators for the $W(k_0)$-module of Witt invariants, under the assumption that the characteristic of $k_0$ does not divide the order of the group. For the Weyl groups of types $B_n$, $C_n$, $D_n$, and $G_2$, we show that the Witt invariants are generated as a $W(k_0)$-algebra by trace forms and their exterior powers, extending a result due to Serre in type $A_n$. Many of our computational methods are applicable to computing Witt invariants of any smooth linear algebraic group over $k_0$, including a technique for lifting module generators from cohomological invariants to Witt invariants.

Abstract:The Witt group of skew hermitian forms over a division algebra $D$ with symplectic involution is shown to be canonically isomorphic to the Witt group of symmetric bilinear forms over the Severi-Brauer variety of $D$ with values in a suitable line bundle. In the special case where $D$ is a quaternion algebra we extend previous work by Pfister and by Parimala on the Witt group of conics to set up two five-terms exact sequences relating the Witt groups of hermitian or skew-hermitian forms over $D$ with the Witt groups of the center, of the function field of the Severi-Brauer conic of $D$, and of the residue fields at each closed point of the conic.

Abstract:We investigate the reduced unramified Witt group of the product of two smooth projective conics , over a field. In some particular cases, this group denoted as turns out to be very small (zero or ). On the other hand, certain examples when it is infinite are constructed. We give sufficient conditions providing nontriviality of in terms of 2-fold Pfister forms , associated with the conics. These conditions and constructions of the corresponding nonzero elements in depend on . Also we study the question of triviality (nontriviality) of this group with respect to extensions of the ground field.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an arbitrary infinite field. The cohomology group $H^2(SL(2,K), H_2\,SL(2,K))$ contains the class of the universal central extension. When studying representations of fundamental groups of surfaces in $SL(2,K)$ it is useful to have classes stable under deformations (Fenchel--Nielsen twists) of representations. We identify the maximal quotient of the universal class which is stable under twists as the Witt class of Nekovar. The Milnor--Wood inequality asserts that an $SL(2,{\bf R})$-bundle over a surface of genus $g$ admits a flat structure if and only if its Euler number is $\leq (g-1)$. We establish an analog of this inequality, and a saturation result for the Witt class. The result is sharp for the field of rationals, but not sharp in general.

Abstract:We establish dimension formulas for the Witt vector affine Springer fibers associated to a reductive group over a mixed characteristic local field, under the assumption that the group is essentially tamely ramified and the residue characteristic is not bad. Besides the discriminant valuations that show up in classical works on the usual affine Springer fibers, our formula also involves the Artin conductors and the Kottwitz invariants of the relevant conjugacy classes.

Abstract:Two fields are Witt equivalent if their Witt rings of symmetric bilinear forms are isomorphic. Witt equivalent fields can be understood to be fields having the same quadratic form theory. The behavior of finite fields, local fields, global fields, as well as function fields of curves defined over Archimedean local fields under Witt equivalence is well understood. Numbers of classes of Witt equivalent fields with finite numbers of square classes are also known in some cases. Witt equivalence of general function fields over global fields was studied in the earlier work [13] by the authors and applied to study Witt equivalence of function fields of curves over global fields. In this paper, we extend these results to local case, i.e. we discuss Witt equivalence of function fields of curves over local fields. As an application, we show that, modulo some additional assumptions, Witt equivalence of two such function fields implies Witt equivalence of underlying local fields.

Rational Curves on Real Classical Groups

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

A geometric approach to the relative de Rham-Witt complex in the smooth, $\mathbb{Z}$-torsion free case

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth scheme over a finitely generated flat $\mathbb{Z}$-, $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$- or $\mathbb{Z}_p$-algebra $R$. Evaluated at finite truncation sets $S$, the relative de Rham-Witt complex $W_S\Omega_{X/R}^{\bullet}$ is a quotient of the de Rham complex $\Omega^{\bullet}_{W_S(X)/W_S(R)}$, which can be computed affine locally via explicit, but complicated relations. In this paper we prove that $W_S\Omega_{X/R}^{\bullet}$ is the torsionless quotient of the usual de Rham complex $\Omega^{\bullet}_{W_S(X)/W_S(R)}$ on the singular scheme $W_S(X)$. This result was suggested by comparison with a similar modification of the de Rham complex in the theory of singular varieties.

Abstract:We recall the notion of a quadratic form parameter $Q$ over the integers and of extended quadratic forms with values in $Q$, which we call $Q$-forms. Certain form parameters $Q$ appeared in Wall's work on the classification of almost closed $(q{-}1)$-connected $2q$-manifolds via $Q$-forms. The algebraic theory of general form parameters and extended quadratic forms has been studied in a variety of far more general settings by authors including Bak, Baues, Ranicki and Schlichting.

The main result of this paper is that for , the image of is as large as possible, subject to this constraint. Abstract:The automorphism groups ${rm Aut,}A_n$ and ${rm Aut,}W_n$ of the polynomial algebra $A_n=C[x_1,x_2,cdots, x_n]$ and the rank $n$ Witt algebra $W_n={rm Der,}A_n$ are studied in this paper. It is well-known that ${rm Aut,}A_n$ for $nge3$ and ${rm Aut,}W_n$ for $nge2$ are open. In the present paper, by characterizing the semigroup ${rm End,}W_nsetminus{0}$ of nonzero endomorphisms of $W_n$ via the semigroup of the so-called Jacobi tuples, we establish an isomorphism between ${rm Aut},A_n$ and ${rm Aut,}W_n$ for any positive integer $n$. In particular, this enables us to work out the automorphism group ${rm Aut,}W_2$ of $W_2$.
Curve classes on conic bundle threefolds and applications to rationality

Abstract:We undertake a study of conic bundle threefolds $\pi\colon X\to W$ over geometrically rational surfaces whose associated discriminant covers $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta\subset W$ are smooth and geometrically irreducible. First, we determine the structure of the group $\mathrm{CH}^2 X_{\overline{k}}$ of rational equivalence classes of curves. Precisely, we construct a Galois-equivariant group homomorphism from $\mathrm{CH}^2X_{\overline{k}}$ to a group scheme associated to the discriminant cover $\tilde{\Delta}\to \Delta$ of $X$. The target group scheme is a generalization of the Prym variety of $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta$ and so our result can be viewed as a generalization of Beauville's result that the algebraically trivial curve classes on $X_{\overline{k}}$ are parametrized by the Prym variety. We apply our structural result on curve classes to study the refined intermediate Jacobian torsor (IJT) obstruction to rationality introduced by Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. The first case of interest is $W = \mathbb P^2$ and $\Delta$ is a smooth plane quartic. In this case, we show that the IJT obstruction characterizes rationality when the ground field has less arithmetic complexity (precisely, when the $2$-torsion in the Brauer group of the ground field is trivial). We also show that a hypothesis of this form is necessary by constructing, over any $k \subset\mathbb R$, a conic bundle threefold with $\Delta$ a smooth quartic where the IJT obstruction vanishes, yet $X$ is irrational over $k$.

Abstract:In this article, the nilpotent orbits of the Witt algebra W-1 are determined under the automorphism group over an algebraically closed field F of characteristic p > 3. In contrast with a finite number of nilpotent orbits in a classical simple Lie algebra (cf. [5]), there is an infinite number of nilpotent orbits in W-1.
