Abstract:The main goal of the article is to prove that if $\mathcal A_1$ and $\mathcal A_2$ are Birkhoff-James isomorphic $C^*$-algebras over the fields $\mathbb F_1$ and $\mathbb F_2$, respectively and if $\mathcal A_1$ finite-dimensional, abelian of dimension greater than one, then $\mathbb F_1=\mathbb F_2$ and $\mathcal A_1$ and $\mathcal A_2$ are (isometrically) $\ast$-isomorphic $C^*$-algebras. Furthermore, it is also proved that for a finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$, we have $\mathcal L_{\mathcal A}^\bot$ is the sum of minimal ideals which are not skew-fields and $\mathcal L_{\mathcal A}^{\bot\bot}$ is the sum of minimal ideals which are skew-fields, where $\mathcal L_{\mathcal A}$ denotes the set of all left-symmetric elements in $\mathcal A$ and for any subset $\mathcal S\subseteq \mathcal A$, the set $\mathcal S^\bot$ represents the set of all elements of $\mathcal A$ which are Birkhoff-James orthogonal to $\mathcal S$. A procedure to extract the minimal ideals which are (commutative) fields is also given.

Abstract:A Banach space characterization of simple real or complex $C^*$-algebras is given which even characterizes the underlying field. As an application, it is shown that if $\mathfrak A_1$ and $\mathfrak A_2$ are Birkhoff-James isomorphic simple $C^*$-algebras over the fields $\mathbb F_1$ and $\mathbb F_2$, respectively and if $\mathfrak A_1$ is finite-dimensional with dimension greater than one, then $\mathbb F_1=\mathbb F_2$ and $\mathfrak A_1$ and $\mathfrak A_2$ are (isometrically) $\ast$-isomorphic $C^*$-algebras.

Birkhoff-James classification of norm's properties

Abstract:For an arbitrary normed space $\mathcal X$ over a field $\mathbb F \in \{ \mathbb R, \mathbb C \}$, we define the directed graph $\Gamma(\mathcal X)$ induced by Birkhoff-James orthogonality on the projective space $\mathbb P(\mathcal X)$, and also its nonprojective counterpart $\Gamma_0(\mathcal X)$. We show that, in finite-dimensional normed spaces, $\Gamma(\mathcal X)$ carries all the information about the dimension, smooth points, and norm's maximal faces. It also allows to determine whether the norm is a supremum norm or not, and thus classifies finite-dimensional abelian $C^\ast$-algebras among other normed spaces. We further establish the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the graph $\Gamma_0(\mathcal{R})$ of a (real or complex) Radon plane $\mathcal{R}$ is isomorphic to the graph $\Gamma_0(\mathbb F^2, \|\cdot\|_2)$ of the two-dimensional Hilbert space and construct examples of such nonsmooth Radon planes.

As an application of our investigation, Birkhoff-James orthogonality of real bilinear forms are studied. Abstract:I present a proof of Kirchberg’s classification theorem: two separable, nuclear, O ∞ \mathcal O_\infty -stable C ∗ C^\ast -algebras are stably isomorphic if and only if they are ideal-related K K KK -equivalent. In particular, this provides a more elementary proof of the Kirchberg–Phillips theorem which is isolated in the paper to increase readability of this important special case.

Abstract:We develop the ring-theoretic notion of Invariant Basis Number in the context of unital $C^*$-algebras and their Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Characterization of $C^*$-algebras with Invariant Basis Number is given in $K$-theoretic terms, closure properties of the class of $C^*$-algebras with Invariant Basis Number are investigated, and examples of $C^*$-algebras both with and without the property are explored. For $C^*$-algebras without Invariant Basis Number we determine structure in terms of a "Basis Type" and describe a class of $C^*$-algebras which are universal in an appropriate sense. We conclude by investigating properties which are strictly stronger than Invariant Basis Number.

A numerical range approach to Birkhoff-James orthogonality with applications

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to provide characterizations of Birkhoff-James orthogonality (BJ-orthogonality in short) in a number of families of Banach spaces in terms of the elements of significant subsets of the unit ball of their dual spaces, which makes the characterizations more applicable. The tool to do so is a fine study of the abstract numerical range and its relation with the BJ-orthogonality. Among other results, we provide a characterization of BJ-orthogonality for spaces of vector-valued bounded functions in terms of the domain set and the dual of the target space, which is applied to get results for spaces of vector-valued continuous functions, uniform algebras, Lipschitz maps, injective tensor products, bounded linear operators with respect to the operator norm and to the numerical radius, multilinear maps, and polynomials. Next, we study possible extensions of the well-known Bhatia-Šemrl theorem on BJ-orthogonality of matrices, showing results in spaces of vector-valued continuous functions, compact linear operators on reflexive spaces, and finite Blaschke products. Finally, we find applications of our results to the study of spear vectors and spear operators. We show that no smooth point of a Banach space can be BJ-orthogonal to a spear vector of $Z$. As a consequence, if $X$ is a Banach space containing strongly exposed points and $Y$ is a smooth Banach space with dimension at least two, then there are no spear operators from $X$ to $Y$. Particularizing this result to the identity operator, we show that a smooth Banach space containing strongly exposed points has numerical index strictly smaller than one. These latter results partially solve some open problems.

Abstract:In the last few decades, the concept of Birkhoff-James orthogonality has been used in several applications. In this survey article, the results known on the necessary and sufficient conditions for Birkhoff-James orthogonality in certain Banach spaces are mentioned. Their applications in studying the geometry of normed spaces are given. The connections between this concept of orthogonality, and the Gateaux derivative and the subdifferential set of the norm function are provided. Several interesting distance formulas can be obtained using the characterizations of Birkhoff-James orthogonality, which are also mentioned. In the end, some new results are obtained.

Abstract:We describe proper correspondences from graph C*-algebras to arbitrary C*-algebras by K-theoretic data. If the target C*-algebra is a graph C*-algebra as well, we may lift an isomorphism on a certain invariant to correspondences back and forth that are inverse to each other up to ideal-preserving homotopy. This implies a classification theorem for purely infinite graph C*-algebras up to stable isomorphism.

Abstract classification theorems for amenable C*-algebras

Abstract:In the 1970s Alain Connes identified the appropriate notion of amenabilty for von Neumann algebras, and used it to obtain a deep internal finite dimensional approximation structure for these algebras. This structure is exactly what is needed for classification, and one of many consequences of Connes' theorem is the uniqueness of amenable II$_1$ factors, and later a complete classification of all simple amenable von Neumann algebras acting on separable Hilbert spaces. The Elliott classification programme aims for comparable structure and classification results for $C^*$-algebras using operator $K$-theory and traces. The definitive unital classification theorem was obtained in 2015. This is a combination of the Kirchberg--Phillips theorem and the large scale activity in the stably finite case by numerous researchers over the previous 15--20 years. It classifies unital simple separable amenable $C^*$-algebras satisfying two extra hypotheses: a universal coefficient theorem which computes $KK$-theory in terms of $K$-theory and a regularity hypothesis excluding exotic high dimensional behaviour. Today the regularity hypothesis can be described in terms of tensor products (Jiang-Su stability). These hypotheses are abstract, and there are deep tools for verifying the universal coefficient theorem and Jiang-Su stability in examples. This article describes the unital classification theorem, its history and context, together with the new abstract approach to this result developed in collaboration with Carrión, Gabe, Schafhauser and Tikuisis. This method makes a direct connection to the von Neumann algebraic results, and does not need to obtain any kind of approximation structure inside $C^*$-algebras en route to classification. A companion survey will focus on the role of the Jiang-Su stability hypothesis, and the associated work on "regularity."

A systematic approach for invariants of C*-algebras

Abstract:We define a categorical framework in which we build a systematic construction that provides generic invariants for C*-algebras. The benefit is significant as we show that any invariant arising this way automatically enjoys nice properties such as continuity, metric on morphisms and a theory of ideals and quotients which naturally encapsulates compatibility diagrams. Consequently, any of these invariants appear as good candidates for the classification of non-simple C*-algebras. Further, it is worth mentioning that most of the existing invariants could be rewritten via this method. As an application, we define an Hausdorffized version of the unitary Cuntz semigroup and explore its potential towards classification results. We pose several open lines of research.

Projective freeness and Hermiteness of complex function algebras

Abstract:The paper studies projective freeness and Hermiteness of algebras of complex-valued continuous functions on topological spaces, Stein algebras, and commutative unital Banach algebras. New sufficient cohomology conditions on the maximal ideal spaces of the algebras are given that guarantee the fulfilment of these properties. The results are illustrated by nontrivial examples. Based on the Borsuk theory of shapes, a new class $\mathscr{C}$ of commutative unital complex Banach algebras is introduced (an analog of the class of local rings in commutative algebra) such that the projective tensor product with algebras in $\mathscr C$ preserves projective freeness and Hermiteness. Some examples of algebras of class $\mathscr{C}$ and of other projective free and Hermite function algebras are assembled. These include, e.g., Douglas algebras, finitely generated algebras of symmetric functions, Bohr-Wiener algebras, algebras of holomorphic semi-almost periodic functions, and algebras of bounded holomorphic functions on Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:We consider the functor C that to a unital C*-algebra A assigns the partial order set C(A) of its commutative C*-subalgebras ordered by inclusion. We investigate how some C*-algebraic properties translate under the action of C to order-theoretical properties. In particular, we show that A is finite dimensional if and only C(A) satisfies certain chain conditions. We eventually show that if A and B are C*-algebras such that A is finite dimensional and C(A) and C(B) are order isomorphic, then A and B must be *-isomorphic.

Abstract:Using the algebraic classification of all $2$-dimensional algebras, we give the algebraic classification of all $2$-dimensional rigid, conservative and terminal algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We have the geometric classification of the variety of $2$-dimensional terminal algebras, and based on the geometric classification of these algebras we formulate some open problems.
