Abstract:The dichromatic number of a digraph is the minimum integer $k$ such that it admits a $k$-dicolouring, i.e. a partition of its vertices into $k$ acyclic subdigraphs. We say that a digraph $D$ is a super-orientation of an undirected graph $G$ if $G$ is the underlying graph of $D$. If $D$ does not contain any pair of symmetric arcs, we just say that $D$ is an orientation of $G$. In this work, we give both lower and upper bounds on the dichromatic number of super-orientations of chordal graphs. We also show a family of orientations of cographs for which the dichromatic number is equal to the clique number of the underlying graph.

Abstract:The dichromatic number $\vec\chi(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the minimum size of a partition of its vertices into acyclic induced subgraphs. We denote by $\lambda(D)$ the maximum local edge connectivity of a digraph $D$. Neumann-Lara proved that for every digraph $D$, $\vec\chi(D) \leq \lambda(D) + 1$. In this paper, we characterize the digraphs $D$ for which $\vec\chi(D) = \lambda(D) + 1$. This generalizes an analogue result for undirected graph proved by Stiebitz and Toft as well as the directed version of Brooks' Theorem proved by Mohar. Along the way, we introduce a generalization of Hajós join that gives a new way to construct families of dicritical digraphs that is of independent interest.

A Simple Construction of Tournaments with Finite and Uncountable Dichromatic Number

Abstract:The dichromatic number $\chi(\vec{G})$ of a digraph $\vec{G}$ is the minimum number of colors needed to color the vertices $V(\vec{G})$ in such a way that no monochromatic directed cycle is obtained. In this note, for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$, we give a simple construction of tournaments with dichromatic number exactly equal to $k$. The proofs are based on a combinatorial lemma on partitioning a checkerboard which may be of independent interest. We also generalize our finite construction to give an elementary construction of a complete digraph of cardinality equal to the cardinality of $\mathbb{R}$ and having an uncountable dichromatic number. Furthermore, we also construct an oriented balanced complete $n$-partite graph $\vec{K}^{(m)}_n$, such that the minimum number of colors needed to color its vertices such that there is no monochromatic directed triangle is greater than or equal to $nm/(n+2m-2)$.

Abstract:The aim of this thesis is to investigate how the structure of a digraph affects its dichromatic number and to extend various results on undirected colouring to digraphs. In the first part of this thesis, we examine how the dichromatic number interacts with other metrics. First, we consider the degree, which is the maximum number of neighbours of a vertex. In the undirected case, this corresponds to Brooks' theorem, a celebrated theorem with multiple variations and generalizations. In the directed case, there is no natural metric corresponding to the maximum degree, so we explore how different notions of maximum directed degree lead to either Brooks-like theorems or impossibility results. We also investigate the maximum local-arc connectivity, a metric that encompasses several degree-like metrics. The second part of this manuscript focuses on a directed analogue of the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture. The Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture tries to characterize sets S of undirected graphs such that graphs with large enough chromatic number must contain a graph of S. This conjecture is still largely open. On digraphs, a corresponding conjecture was proposed by Aboulker, Charbit, and Naserasr. We prove several subcases of this conjecture, mainly demonstrating that certain classes of digraphs have bounded dichromatic number. In the last part of this thesis, we address the d-edge-defective-colouring problem, which involves colouring edges of a multigraph such that, for any vertex, no colour appears on more than d of its incident edges. When d equals one, this corresponds to the infamous edge-colouring problem. Shannon established a tight bound on the number of colours needed relative to the maximum degree when d equals one, and we extend this result to any value of d. We also explore this problem on simple graphs and prove results that extend Vizing's theorem to any value of d.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a variant of dichromatic number on digraphs with prescribed sets of arcs. Let $D$ be a digraph and let $Z_1, Z_2$ be two sets of arcs in $D$. For a subdigraph $H$ of $D$, let $A(H)$ denote the set of all arcs of $H$. Let $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ be the minimum number of parts in a vertex partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ such that for every $X\in \mathcal{P}$, the subdigraph of $D$ induced by $X$ contains no directed cycle $C$ with $|A(C)\cap Z_1|\neq |A(C)\cap Z_2|$. For $Z_1=A(D)$ and $Z_2=\emptyset$, $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ is equal to the dichromatic number of $D$. We prove that for every digraph $F$ and every tuple $(a_e,b_e,r_e, q_e)$ of integers with $q_e\ge 2$ and $\gcd(a_e,q_e)=\gcd(b_e,q_e)=1$ for each arc $e$ of $F$, there exists an integer $N$ such that if $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)\ge N$, then $D$ contains a subdigraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $F$ in which each arc $e$ of $F$ is subdivided into a directed path~$P_e$ such that~$a_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_1|+b_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_2|\equiv {r_e}\pmod {q_e}$. This generalizes a theorem of Steiner [Subdivisions with congruence constraints in digraphs of large chromatic number, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.06358" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.06358">arXiv:2208.06358</a>] which corresponds to the case when $(a_e, b_e, Z_1, Z_2)=(1, 1, A(D), \emptyset)$.

Balanced-chromatic number and Hadwiger-like conjectures

Abstract:Motivated by different characterizations of planar graphs and the 4-Color Theorem, several structural results concerning graphs of high chromatic number have been obtained. Toward strengthening some of these results, we consider the \emph{balanced chromatic number}, $\chi_b(\hat{G})$, of a signed graph $\hat{G}$. This is the minimum number of parts into which the vertices of a signed graph can be partitioned so that none of the parts induces a negative cycle. This extends the notion of the chromatic number of a graph since $\chi(G)=\chi_b(\tilde{G})$, where $\tilde{G}$ denotes the signed graph obtained from~$G$ by replacing each edge with a pair of (parallel) positive and negative edges. We introduce a signed version of Hadwiger's conjecture as follows. Conjecture: If a signed graph $\hat{G}$ has no negative loop and no $\tilde{K_t}$-minor, then its balanced chromatic number is at most $t-1$. We prove that this conjecture is, in fact, equivalent to Hadwiger's conjecture and show its relation to the Odd Hadwiger Conjecture. Motivated by these results, we also consider the relation between subdivisions and balanced chromatic number. We prove that if $(G, \sigma)$ has no negative loop and no $\tilde{K_t}$-subdivision, then it admits a balanced $\frac{79}{2}t^2$-coloring. This qualitatively generalizes a result of Kawarabayashi (2013) on totally odd subdivisions.

Abstract:\qquad A \emph{coloring} of a digraph $D=(V,E)$ is a coloring of its vertices following the rule: Let $uv$ be an arc in $D$. If the tail $u$ is colored first, then the head $v$ should receive a color different from that of $u$. The \emph{dichromatic number} $\chi_d(D)$ of $D$ is the minimum number of colors needed in a coloring of $D$. Besides obtaining many results and bounds for $\chi_d(D)$ analogous to that of chromatic number of a graph, we prove $\chi_d(D)=1$ if $D$ is acyclic. New notions of sequential colorings of graphs/digraphs are introduced. A characterization of acyclic digraph is obtained interms of $L$-matrix of a vertex labeled digraph.

Abstract:Let D be a digraph with vertex set V(D). A partition of V(D) into k acyclic sets is called a k-coloring of D. The minimum integer k for which there exists a k-coloring of D is the dichromatic number χ(D) of the digraph D. Denote Gn,k the set of the digraphs of order n with the dichromatic number k≥2. In this note, we characterize the digraph which has the maximal spectral radius in Gn,k. Our result generalizes the result of [8] by Feng et al.

Abstract:The chromatic number of a directed graph is the minimum number of induced acyclic subdigraphs that cover its vertex set, and accordingly, the chromatic number of a tournament is the minimum number of transitive subtournaments that cover its vertex set. The neighborhood of an arc $uv$ in a tournament $T$ is the set of vertices that form a directed triangle with arc $uv$. We show that if the neighborhood of every arc in a tournament has bounded chromatic number, then the whole tournament has bounded chromatic number. This holds more generally for oriented graphs with bounded independence number, and we extend our proof from tournaments to this class of dense digraphs. As an application, we prove the equivalence of a conjecture of El-Zahar and Erdős and a recent conjecture of Nguyen, Scott and Seymour relating the structure of graphs and tournaments with high chromatic number.

Subdivisions in dicritical digraphs with large order or digirth

Abstract:Aboulker et al. proved that a digraph with large enough dichromatic number contains any fixed digraph as a subdivision. The dichromatic number of a digraph is the smallest order of a partition of its vertex set into acyclic induced subdigraphs. A digraph is dicritical if the removal of any arc or vertex decreases its dichromatic number. In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a dicritical digraph of large order or large directed girth to contain a given digraph as a subdivision. In particular, we prove that (i) for every integers $k,\ell$, large enough dicritical digraphs with dichromatic number $k$ contain an orientation of a cycle with at least $\ell$ vertices; (ii) there are functions $f,g$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of a digraph $F$, digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and dichromatic number at least $g(F)$ contain a subdivision of $F^*$, and if $F$ is a tree, then $g(F)=|V(F)|$; (iii) there is a function $f$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of $TT_3$ (the transitive tournament on three vertices), digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and minimum out-degree at least $2$ contain $F^*$ as a subdivision.

A Complexity Dichotomy for Critical Values of the b-Chromatic Number of Graphs

Abstract:A $b$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper coloring of its vertices such that each color class contains a vertex that has at least one neighbor in all the other color classes. The b-Coloring problem asks whether a graph $G$ has a $b$-coloring with $k$ colors. The $b$-chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\chi_b(G)$, is the maximum number $k$ such that $G$ admits a $b$-coloring with $k$ colors. We consider the complexity of the b-Coloring problem, whenever the value of $k$ is close to one of two upper bounds on $\chi_b(G)$: The maximum degree $\Delta(G)$ plus one, and the $m$-degree, denoted by $m(G)$, which is defined as the maximum number $i$ such that $G$ has $i$ vertices of degree at least $i-1$. We obtain a dichotomy result stating that for fixed $k \in \{\Delta(G) + 1 - p, m(G) - p\}$, the problem is polynomial-time solvable whenever $p \in \{0, 1\}$ and, even when $k = 3$, it is NP-complete whenever $p \ge 2$. We furthermore consider parameterizations of the b-Coloring problem that involve the maximum degree $\Delta(G)$ of the input graph $G$ and give two FPT-algorithms. First, we show that deciding whether a graph $G$ has a $b$-coloring with $m(G)$ colors is FPT parameterized by $\Delta(G)$. Second, we show that b-Coloring is FPT parameterized by $\Delta(G) + \ell_k(G)$, where $\ell_k(G)$ denotes the number of vertices of degree at least $k$.

Abstract:The bivariate chromatic polynomial $\chi_G(x,y)$ of a graph $G = (V, E)$, introduced by Dohmen-Pönitz-Tittmann (2003), counts all $x$-colorings of $G$ such that adjacent vertices get different colors if they are $\le y$. We extend this notion to mixed graphs, which have both directed and undirected edges. Our main result is a decomposition formula which expresses $\chi_G(x,y)$ as a sum of bivariate order polynomials (Beck-Farahmand-Karunaratne-Zuniga Ruiz 2020), and a combinatorial reciprocity theorem for $\chi_G(x,y)$.

An analogue of Reed's conjecture for digraphs

Abstract:Reed in 1998 conjectured that every graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G) \leq \lceil \frac{\Delta(G)+1+\omega(G)}{2} \rceil$. As a partial result, he proved the existence of $\varepsilon > 0$ for which every graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G) \leq \lceil (1-\varepsilon)(\Delta(G)+1)+\varepsilon\omega(G) \rceil$. We propose an analogue conjecture for digraphs. Given a digraph $D$, we denote by $\vec{\chi}(D)$ the dichromatic number of $D$, which is the minimum number of colours needed to partition $D$ into acyclic induced subdigraphs. We let $\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D)$ denote the size of the largest biclique (a set of vertices inducing a complete digraph) of $D$ and $\tilde{\Delta}(D) = \max_{v\in V(D)} \sqrt{d^+(v) \cdot d^-(v)}$. We conjecture that every digraph $D$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(D) \leq \lceil \frac{\tilde{\Delta}(D)+1+\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D)}{2} \rceil$, which if true implies Reed's conjecture. As a partial result, we prove the existence of $\varepsilon >0$ for which every digraph $D$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(D) \leq \lceil (1-\varepsilon)(\tilde{\Delta}(D)+1)+\varepsilon\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D) \rceil$. This implies both Reed's result and an independent result of Harutyunyan and Mohar for oriented graphs. To obtain this upper bound on $\vec{\chi}$, we prove that every digraph $D$ with $\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D) > \frac{2}{3}(\Delta_{\max}(D)+1)$, where $\Delta_{\max}(D) = \max_{v\in V(D)} \max(d^+(v),d^-(v))$, admits an acyclic set of vertices intersecting each biclique of $D$, which generalises a result of King.

Abstract:A b-coloring of a graph is a proper coloring of its vertices such that each color class contains a vertex adjacent to at least one vertex of every other color class. The b-chromatic number of a graph is the largest integer k such that the graph has a b-coloring with k colors. In this work we present lower bounds for the b-chromatic number of a vertex-deleted subgraph of a graph, particularly regarding two important classes, quasi-line and chordal graphs. We also get bounds for the b-chromatic number of G -{x}, when G is a graph with large girth.

Abstract:In 1992, Erdős and Hajnal posed the following natural problem: Does there exist, for every $r\in \mathbb{N}$, an integer $F(r)$ such that every graph with chromatic number at least $F(r)$ contains $r$ edge-disjoint cycles on the same vertex set? We solve this problem in a strong form, by showing that there exist $n$-vertex graphs with fractional chromatic number $\Omega\left(\frac{\log \log n}{\log \log \log n}\right)$ that do not even contain a $4$-regular subgraph. This implies that no such number $F(r)$ exists for $r\ge 2$. We show that assuming a conjecture of Harris, the bound on the fractional chromatic number in our result cannot be improved.

Abstract:Given a digraph D=(V,A) on n vertices and a vertex v∈V , the cycle-degree of v is the minimum size of a set S⊆V(D)∖{v} intersecting every directed cycle of D containing v . From this definition of cycle-degree, we define the c -degeneracy (or cycle-degeneracy) of D , which we denote by δc∗(D) . It appears to be a nice generalisation of the undirected degeneracy. For instance, the dichromatic number χ→(D) of D is bounded above by δc∗(D)+1 , where χ→(D) is the minimum integer k such that D admits a k -dicolouring, i.e. , a partition of its vertices into k acyclic subdigraphs. In this work, using this new definition of cycle-degeneracy, we extend several evidences for Cereceda's conjecture (Cereceda, 2007) to digraphs. The k - dicolouring graph of D , denoted by Dk(D) , is the undirected graph whose vertices are the k -dicolourings of D and in which two k -dicolourings are adjacent if they differ on the colour of exactly one vertex. This is a generalisation of the k -colouring graph of an undirected graph G , in which the vertices are the proper k -colourings of G . We show that Dk(D) has diameter at most Oδc∗(D)(nδc∗(D)+1) (respectively O(n2) and (δc∗(D)+1)n ) when k is at least δc∗(D)+2 (respectively 32(δc∗(D)+1) and 2(δc∗(D)+1) ). This improves known results on digraph redicolouring (Bousquet et al., 2023). Next, we extend a result due to Feghali (2021) to digraphs, showing that Dd+1(D) has diameter at most Od,ε(n(logn)d−1) when D has maximum average cycle-degree at most d−ε . We then show that two proofs of Bonamy and Bousquet (2018) for undirected graphs can be extended to digraphs. The first one uses the digrundy number of a digraph χ→g(D) , which is the worst number of colours used in a greedy dicolouring. If k≥χ→g(D)+1 , we show that Dk(D) has diameter at most 4⋅χ→(D)⋅n . The second one uses the D - width of a digraph, denoted by Dw(D) , which is a generalisation of the treewidth to digraphs. If k≥Dw(D)+2 , we show that Dk(D) has diameter at most 2(n2+n) . Finally, we give a general theorem which makes a connection between the recolourability of a digraph D and the recolourability of its underlying graph UG(D) . Assume that G is a class of undirected graphs, closed under edge-deletion and with bounded chromatic number, and let k≥χ(G) ( i.e. , k≥χ(G) for every G∈G ) be such that, for every n -vertex graph G∈G , the diameter of the k -colouring graph of G is bounded by f(n) for some function f . Abstract:The results of this note were stated in the first author PhD manuscript in 2006 but never published. The writing of a proof given there was slightly careless and the proof itself scattered across the document, the goal of this note is to give a short and clear proof using Farkas Lemma. The first result is a characterization of the acyclic chromatic number of a digraph in terms of cyclic ordering. Using this theorem we prove that for any digraph, one can sequentially reverse the orientations of the arcs of a family of directed cycles so that the resulting digraph has acyclic chromatic number at most 2.

Distinguishing chromatic number of middle and subdivision graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple finite connected graph of order $n$ greater than or equal to $3$. We obtain the following results: (1). We apply a result of Hamada and Yoshimura from 1976 and some recent results of Alikhani and Soltani (2020) and Kalinowski and Pilsniak (2015) to determine the distinguishing chromatic number of the middle graph $M(G)$ of the graph $G$. In particular, the distinguishing chromatic number $\chi_{D}(M(G))$ of the middle graph $M(G)$ of the graph $G$ is $\Delta(G)+1$ except for four small graphs $C_{4}, K_{4}, C_{6}$, and $K_{3,3}$, and $\Delta(G)+2$ otherwise. (2). In 2016, Kalinowski, Pilsniak, and Wozniak introduced the total distinguishing number $D''(G)$ of $G$. Inspired by a recent result of Mirafzal (2024), we show that the distinguishing number $D(S(G))$ of the subdivision graph $S(G)$ of $G$ is $D''(G)$. Consequently, $D(S(G))$ is at most $\lceil \sqrt{\Delta(G)}\rceil$. (3). We obtain a sharp upper bound for the distinguishing chromatic number of the subdivision graph $S(G)$ of $G$ in terms of the distinguishing number of $G$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and c a proper k-coloring of G, i.e. any two adjacent vertices u and v have different colors c(u) and c(v). A proper k-coloring is a b-coloring if there exists a vertex in every color class that contains all the colors in its closed neighborhood. The maximum number of colors k admitting b-coloring of G is the b-chromatic number. We present two separate approaches to the conjecture posed by Blidia et. al that the b-chromatic number equals to d+1 for every d-regular graph of girth at least five except the Petersen graph.

Geometric graphs with exponential chromatic number and arbitrary girth

Abstract:In 1975 Erdős initiated the study of the following very natural question. What can be said about the chromatic number of unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that have large girth? Over the years this question and its natural extension to $\mathbb{R}^d$ attracted considerable attention with the high-dimensional variant reiterated recently by Alon and Kupavskii. We prove that there exist unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with chromatic number at least $(1.074 + o(1))^d$ that have arbitrarily large girth. This improves upon a series of results due to Kupavskii; Sagdeev; and Sagdeev and Raigorodskii and gives the first bound in which the base of the exponent does not tend to one with the girth. In addition, our construction can be made explicit which allows us to answer in a strong form a question of Kupavskii. Our arguments show graphs of large chromatic number and high girth exist in a number of other geometric settings including diameter graphs and orthogonality graphs.
