Abstract:We derive new small deviations bounds for a class of Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures obtained from Gaussian fields with zero spatial average. The upper bound holds for a class of fields closely related to the $\star$-scale invariant Gaussian fields in arbitrary number of dimensions, and the lower bound holds for the Gaussian free field with zero spatial average on the torus. The upper bound is obtained by a modification of the method that was used in \cite{LRV}, and the lower bound is obtained by applying the Donsker--Varadhan variational formula. We also give the probabilistic path integral formulation of the massless Sinh--Gordon model on a torus of side length $R$, and study its partition function $R$ tends to infinity. We apply the small deviation bounds for Gaussian multiplicative chaos to obtain lower and upper bounds for the logarithm of the partition function, leading to the existence of a non-zero and finite subsequential infinite volume limit for the free energy.

Abstract:As represented by the Liouville measure, Gaussian multiplicative chaos is a random measure constructed from a Gaussian field. Under certain technical assumptions, we prove the convergence of a process time-changed by Gaussian multiplicative chaos in the case the latter object is square integrable (the $L^2$-regime). As examples of the main result, we prove that, in the whole $L^2$-regime, the scaling limit of the Liouville simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is Liouville Brownian motion and, as $\alpha \to 1$, Liouville $\alpha$-stable processes on $\mathbb{R}$ converge weakly to the Liouville Cauchy process.

Abstract:In this paper, we initiate the harmonic analysis of Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) on the circle, i.e. the study of its Fourier coefficients. In particular, we show that almost surely GMC is a so-called Rajchman measure which means that its Fourier coefficients converge to $0$ when the frequency goes to infinity. We supplement this result with a convergence in law result for the rescaled Fourier coefficients.

Abstract:We investigate the Fourier dimension, $\dim_F\mu$, of Mandelbrot multiplicative cascade measures $\mu$ on the $d$-dimensional unit cube. We show that if $\mu$ is the cascade measure generated by a sub-exponential random variable then \[\dim_F\mu=\min\{2,\dim_2\mu\}\,,\] where $\dim_2\mu$ is the correlation dimension of $\mu$ and it has an explicit formula. For cascades on the circle $S\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, we obtain \[\dim_F\mu\ge\frac{\dim_2\mu}{2+\dim_2\mu}\,.\]

Abstract:Given $d\ge 1$, we provide a construction of the random measure - the critical Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos - formally defined $e^{\sqrt{2d}X}\mathrm{d} \mu$ where $X$ is a $\log$-correlated Gaussian field and $\mu$ is a locally finite measure on $\mathbb R^d$. Our construction generalizes the one performed in the case where $\mu$ is the Lebesgue measure. It requires that the measure $\mu$ is sufficiently spread out, namely that for $\mu$ almost every $x$ we have $$ \int_{B(0,1)}\frac{\mu(\mathrm{d} y)}{|x-y|^{d}e^{\rho\left(\log \frac{1}{|x-y|} \right)}}<\infty, $$ for any compact set where $\rho:\mathbb R_+\to \mathbb R_+$ can be chosen to be any lower envelope function for the $3$-Bessel process (this includes $\rho(x)=x^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha\in (0,1/2)$). We prove that three distinct random objects converge to a common limit which defines the critical GMC: the derivative martingale, the critical martingale, and the exponential of the mollified field. We also show that the above criterion for the measure $\mu$ is in a sense optimal.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the multiplicative chaos measure associated to the log-correlated random Fourier series, or random wave model, with i.i.d. coefficients taken from a general class of distributions. This measure was shown to be non-degenerate when the inverse temperature is subcritical by Junnila (Int. Math. Res. Not. 2020 (2020), no. 19, 6169-6196). When the coefficients are Gaussian, this measure is an example of a Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC), a well-studied universal object in the study of log-correlated fields. In the case of non-Gaussian coefficients, the resulting chaos is not a GMC in general. However, for inverse temperature inside the $L^1$-regime, we construct a coupling between the non-Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure and a GMC such that the two are almost surely mutually absolutely continuous.

Abstract:The complex Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos (or complex GMC) is informally defined as a random measure $e^{\gamma X} \mathrm{d} x$ where $X$ is a log correlated Gaussian field on $\mathbb R^d$ and $\gamma=\alpha+i\beta$ is a complex parameter. The correlation function of $X$ is of the form $$ K(x,y)= \log \frac{1}{|x-y|}+ L(x,y),$$ where $L$ is a continuous function. In the present paper, we consider the cases $\gamma\in \mathcal P_{\mathrm{I/II}}$ and $\gamma\in \mathcal{P}'_{\mathrm{II/III}}$ where $$ \mathcal P_{\mathrm{I/II}}:= \{ \alpha+i \beta \ : \alpha,\beta \in \mathbb R \ ; |\alpha|>|\beta| \ ; \ |\alpha|+|\beta|=\sqrt{2d} \}, $$ and $$ \mathcal{P}'_{\mathrm{II/III}}:= \{ \alpha+i \beta \ : \alpha,\beta \in \mathbb R \ ; \ |\alpha|= \sqrt{d/2} \ ; \ |\beta|>\sqrt{2d} \},$$ We prove that if $X$ is replaced by an approximation $X_\epsilon$ obtained via mollification, then $e^{\gamma X_\epsilon} \mathrm{d} x$, when properly rescaled, converges when $\epsilon\to 0$. The limit does not depend on the mollification kernel. When $\gamma\in \mathcal P_{\mathrm{I/II}}$, the convergence holds in probability and in $L^p$ for some value of $p\in [1,\sqrt{2d}/\alpha)$. When $\gamma\in \mathcal{P}'_{\mathrm{II/III}}$ the convergence holds only in law. In this latter case, the limit can be described a complex Gaussian white noise with a random intensity given by a critical real GMC. The regions $\mathcal P_{\mathrm{I/II}}$ and $ \mathcal{P}'_{\mathrm{II/III}}$ correspond to phase boundary between the three different regions of the complex GMC phase diagram. These results complete previous results obtained for the GMC in phase I and III and only leave as an open problem the question of convergence in phase II.

Abstract:In this article we study the generalized Fourier dimension of the set of Liouville numbers $\mathbb{L}$. Being a set of zero Hausdorff dimension, the analysis has to be done at the level of functions with a slow decay at infinity acting as control for the Fourier transform of (Rajchman) measures supported on $\mathbb{L}$. We give an almost complete characterization of admissible decays for this set in terms of comparison to power-like functions. This work can be seen as the ``Fourier side'' of the analysis made by Olsen and Renfro regarding the generalized Hausdorff dimension using gauge functions. We also provide an approach to deal with the problem of classifying oscillating candidates for a Fourier decay for $\mathbb{L}$ relying on its translation invariance property.

Abstract:In this paper we characterize all distributional limits of the random quadratic form $T_n =\sum_{1\le u< v\le n} a_{u, v} X_u X_v$, where $((a_{u, v}))_{1\le u,v\le n}$ is a $\{0, 1\}$-valued symmetric matrix with zeros on the diagonal and $X_1, X_2, \ldots, X_n$ are i.i.d.~ mean $0$ variance $1$ random variables with common distribution function $F$. In particular, we show that any distributional limit of $S_n:=T_n/\sqrt{\mathrm{Var}[T_n]}$ can be expressed as the sum of three independent components: a Gaussian, a (possibly) infinite weighted sum of independent centered chi-squares, and a Gaussian mixture with a random variance. As a consequence, we prove a fourth moment theorem for the asymptotic normality of $S_n$, which applies even when $F$ does not have finite fourth moment. More formally, we show that $S_n$ converges to $N(0, 1)$ if and only if the fourth moment of $S_n$ (appropriately truncated when $F$ does not have finite fourth moment) converges to 3 (the fourth moment of the standard normal distribution).

Abstract:We determine the exact threshold of the extended Seiberg bound for the existence of correlation functions in the boundary Liouville conformal field theory in the unit disk. In probabilistic terms, our result is a toolbox yielding the threshold for the existence of positive moments of Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure, appliable to the case where singularities of arbitrary (co-)dimension in the background metric are present. We improve previous results of this type for 0-dimensional singularities in [DKRV16] and a sufficient condition for the 1-dimensional singularity in an unpublished appendix of [HRV18]. In particular, we prove the optimality of the moment bound threshold for boundary Gaussian multiplicative chaos conjectured in [HRV18], which is equivalent to the so-called unit volume Seiberg bound of the boundary Liouville conformal field theory.

Abstract:We investigate a special sequence of random variables A ( N ) defined by an exponential power series with independent standard complex Gaussians . Introduced by Hughes, Keating, and O'Connell in the study of random matrix theory, this sequence relates to Gaussian multiplicative chaos (in particular "holomorphic multiplicative chaos" per Najnudel, Paquette, and Simm) and random multiplicative functions. Soundararajan and Zaman recently determined the order of . By constructing an algorithm to calculate A ( N ) in steps, we produce computational evidence that their result can likely be strengthened to an asymptotic result with a numerical estimate for the asymptotic constant. We also obtain similar conclusions when A ( N ) is defined using standard real Gaussians or uniform random variables. However, our evidence suggests that the asymptotic constants do not possess a natural product structure.

Abstract:Any hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ has a Hausdorff dimension of $d$. However, the Fourier dimension depends on the finer geometric properties of the hypersurface. For example, the Fourier dimension of a hyperplane is 0, and the Fourier dimension of a hypersurface with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature is $d$. Recently, T. Harris showed that the Euclidean light cone in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ has a Fourier dimension of $d-1$, which leads one to conjecture that the Fourier dimension of a hypersurface equals the number of non-vanishing principal curvatures. We prove this conjecture for all constant rank hypersurfaces. Our method involves substantial generalizations of Harris's strategy.

Abstract:We study the long time Schrödinger evolution of Lagrangian states $f_h$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $(X,g)$ of negative sectional curvature. We consider two models of semiclassical random Schrödinger operators $P_h^\alpha=-h^2\Delta_g +h^\alpha Q_\omega$, $0<\alpha\leq 1$, where the semiclassical Laplace-Beltrami operator $-h^2\Delta_g$ on $X$ is subject to a small random perturbation $h^\alpha Q_\omega$ given by either a random potential or a random pseudo-differential operator. Here, the potential or the symbol of $Q_\omega$ is bounded, but oscillates and decorrelates at scale $h^{\beta}$, $0< \beta < \frac{1}{2}$. We prove a quantitative result that, under appropriate conditions on $\alpha,\beta$, in probability with respect to $\omega$ the long time propagation $$\mathrm{e}^{\frac{i}{h}t_h P_h^\alpha } f_h, \quad o(|\log h|)=t_h\to\infty, ~~h\to 0,$$ rescaled to the local scale of $h$ around a uniformly at random chosen point $x_0$ on $X$, converges in law to an isotropic stationary monochromatic Gaussian field -- the Berry Gaussian field. We also provide and $\omega$-almost sure version of this convergence along sufficiently fast decaying subsequences $h_j\to 0$.

Abstract:Two-dimensional quantum gravity, defined either via scaling limits of random discrete surfaces or via Liouville quantum gravity, is known to possess a geometry that is genuinely fractal with a Hausdorff dimension equal to 4. Coupling gravity to a statistical system at criticality changes the fractal properties of the geometry in a way that depends on the central charge of the critical system. Establishing the dependence of the Hausdorff dimension on this central charge <i>c</i> has been an important open problem in physics and mathematics in the past decades. All simulation data produced thus far has supported a formula put forward by Watabiki in the nineties. However, recent rigorous bounds on the Hausdorff dimension in Liouville quantum gravity show that Watabiki's formula cannot be correct when <i>c</i> approaches . Based on simulations of discrete surfaces encoded by random planar maps and a numerical implementation of Liouville quantum gravity, we obtain new finite-size scaling estimates of the Hausdorff dimension that are in clear contradiction with Watabiki's formula for all simulated values of . Instead, the most reliable data in the range is in very good agreement with an alternative formula that was recently suggested by Ding and Gwynne. The estimates for display a negative deviation from the latter formula, but the scaling is seen to be less accurate in this regime.

Abstract:The aim of this review-style paper is to provide a concise, self-contained and unified presentation of the construction and main properties of Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) measures for log-correlated fields in 2D in the subcritical regime. By considering the case of the 2D Gaussian free field, we review convergence, uniqueness and characterisations of the measures; revisit Kahane's convexity inequalities and existence and scaling of moments; discuss the measurability of the underlying field with respect to the GMC measure and present a KPZ relation for scaling exponents.
Chaotic temperature and bond dependence of four-dimensional Gaussian spin glasses with partial thermal boundary conditions

Abstract:Spin glasses have competing interactions and complex energy landscapes that are highly-susceptible to perturbations, such as the temperature or the bonds. The thermal boundary condition technique is an effective and visual approach for characterizing chaos, and has been successfully applied to three dimensions. In this paper, we tailor the technique to partial thermal boundary conditions, where thermal boundary condition is applied in a subset (3 out of 4 in this work) of the dimensions for better flexibility and efficiency for a broad range of disordered systems. We use this method to study both temperature chaos and bond chaos of the four-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian disorder to low temperatures. We compare the two forms of chaos, with chaos of three dimensions, and also the four-dimensional $\pm J$ model. We observe that the two forms of chaos are characterized by the same set of scaling exponents, bond chaos is much stronger than temperature chaos, and the exponents are also compatible with the $\pm J$ model. Finally, we discuss the effects of chaos on the number of pure states in the thermal boundary condition ensemble.

Abstract:We study the characteristic polynomial of Haar distributed random unitary matrices. We show that after a suitable normalization, as one increases the size of the matrix, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial as well as powers of the exponential of its argument converge in law to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure for small enough real powers. This establishes a connection between random matrix theory and the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos.

Abstract:We generalize Huberman-Rudnick universal scaling law for all periodic windows of the logistic map and show the robustness of $q$-Gaussian probability distributions in the vicinity of chaos threshold. Our scaling relation is universal for the self-similar windows of the map which exhibit period-doubling subharmonic bifurcations. Using this generalized scaling argument, for all periodic windows, as chaos threshold is approached, a developing convergence to $q$-Gaussian is numerically obtained both in the central regions and tails of the probability distributions of sums of iterates.
