Abstract:Three dimensional (3D) third-order topological insulators (TIs) have zero-dimensional (0D) corner states, which are three dimensions lower than bulk. Here we investigate the third-order TIs on breathing pyrochlore lattices with p-orbital freedom. The tight-binding Hamiltonian is derived for the p-orbital model, in which we find that the two orthogonal ${\pi}$-type (transverse) hoppings are the key to open a band gap and obtain higher-order topological corner states. We introduce the Z4 berry phase to characterize the bulk topology and analysis the phase diagram. The corner states, demonstrated in a finite structure of a regular tetrahedron, exhibit rich 3D orbital configurations. Furthermore, we design an acoustic system to introduce the necessary ${\pi}$-type hopping and successfully observe the orbital corner states. Our work extends topological orbital corner states to third-order, which enriches the contents of orbital physics and may lead to applications in novel topological acoustic devices.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore and realize orbital corner states in three - dimensional (3D) third - order topological insulators (TIs). Specifically, the author studied the method of opening the band gap and obtaining high - order topological corner states by introducing two orthogonal π - type transitions in the breathing pyrochlore lattice with p - orbital degrees of freedom. The author also characterized the bulk topology by introducing the Z4 Berry phase and analyzed the phase diagram. In addition, the author designed an acoustic system and successfully observed the orbital corner states. This work expands the scope of orbital physics and may provide a basis for the application of new topological acoustic devices. ### Main problems and solutions 1. **Problem**: How to realize zero - dimensional corner states in three - dimensional third - order topological insulators? - **Solution**: By introducing two orthogonal π - type transitions, which are the keys to opening the band gap and obtaining high - order topological corner states. The author constructed a tight - binding Hamiltonian model, in which all p - orbital transition processes were considered. 2. **Problem**: How to characterize and analyze the bulk topological properties of three - dimensional third - order topological insulators? - **Solution**: Use the Z4 Berry phase to characterize the bulk topology, and determined two quantization values (0.25 and 0.5) by analyzing the phase diagram, which correspond to the energy bands under three and six band gaps respectively. 3. **Problem**: How to verify theoretical predictions in actual systems? - **Solution**: Designed a four - layer regular tetrahedron finite structure, showing zero - energy corner states and their rich orbital configurations. Further, the orbital corner states were realized through an acoustic system, and the experimental feasibility was verified by numerical simulation. ### Key techniques and methods - **Tight - binding Hamiltonian**: Constructed a tight - binding Hamiltonian including σ - type and π - type transitions to describe the p - orbital breathing pyrochlore lattice. - **Z4 Berry phase**: Used to characterize the bulk topological properties and determine the topological phase transition by analyzing the phase diagram. - **Finite structure and acoustic system**: Verified the theoretically predicted corner states by constructing a finite structure and designing an acoustic system. ### Experimental and simulation results - **Band structure and energy spectrum**: Obtained the band structure and energy spectrum through the tight - binding model and acoustic simulation, verifying the existence of zero - energy corner states. - **Orbital configuration**: Showed the rich orbital configurations of corner states, including symmetric and asymmetric orbital arrangements. - **Acoustic realization**: Successfully observed the orbital corner states through the acoustic system, verifying the experimental feasibility of the theoretical model. ### Conclusion The author successfully realized the orbital corner states in three - dimensional third - order topological insulators and verified their existence through theory and experiment. This work not only expands the research scope of orbital physics, but also provides a theoretical basis for the design of new topological acoustic devices.
