Abstract:Fix a Dirichlet character $\chi$ and a cuspidal GL$(2)$ eigenform $\phi$ with relatively prime conductors. Then we show that there are infinitely many cusp forms $\pi$ on GL$(3)$ such that $L(1/2, \pi \times \chi)$ and $L(1/2, \pi \times \phi)$ are simultaneously non-zero. We achieve this by use of Jacquet's Relative Trace Formula. We derive an expression of the average over the GL$(3)$ cuspidal spectrum as a sum of a non-zero main term and two subsidiary terms which are forced to be zero for large enough level by use of a suitable test function. This modest article is dedicated to the memory of Harish Chandra, on the occasion of his hundredth birthday.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve a specific mathematical problem, that is, to prove that for a given Dirichlet character \(\chi\) and a GL(2) cusp form \(\phi\) with relatively prime conductors, there exist infinitely many cusp forms \(\pi\) on GL(3) such that \(L(1/2, \pi\times\chi)\) and \(L(1/2, \pi\times\phi)\) are simultaneously non - zero. Here \(L(s, \pi\times\chi)\) and \(L(s, \pi\times\phi)\) respectively represent the Rankin - Selberg L - functions related to \(\pi\) and \(\chi\) or \(\phi\). To achieve this goal, the authors utilize Jacquet's Relative Trace Formula (RTF). By choosing appropriate test functions, they express the spectral average of GL(3) cusp forms as the sum of a non - zero main term and two negligible minor terms. When the level of the GL(3) form is large enough, the main term is proved to be non - zero, thus proving the main result. Specifically, the key steps of the paper include: 1. **Define the test function**: According to the properties to be proved, a test function \(f\) is carefully constructed. 2. **Apply the relative trace formula**: Use the relative trace formula to transform the problem into analyzing the geometric side and the spectral side of the trace formula. 3. **Analyze the geometric side**: Through a detailed analysis of the integral on the geometric side, especially the small cell orbital integral and two types of regular orbital integrals (type I and type II), it is proved that the minor terms are zero under certain conditions, while the main term is non - zero. 4. **Conclusion**: Eventually, it is concluded that for infinitely many cusp forms \(\pi\) on GL(3), \(L(1/2, \pi\times\chi)\) and \(L(1/2, \pi\times\phi)\) are simultaneously non - zero. This result is not only theoretically significant, but also provides a new perspective for understanding the L - function relationships between GL(3) and GL(2).
