Abstract:In this paper we discuss lifting laws which, roughly, are ways of "lifting" elements of the open orbit of one prehomogeneous vector space to elements of the minimal nonzero orbit of another prehomogeneous vector space. We prove a handful of these lifting laws, and show how they can be used to help solve certain problems in arithmetic invariant theory. Of the results contained in this article are twisted versions of certain parametrization theorems of Bhargava.

Abstract:We illustrate the generative power of the lifting property (orthogonality of morphisms in a category) as means of defining natural elementary mathematical concepts by giving a number of examples in various categories, in particular showing that many standard elementary notions of abstract topology can be defined by applying the lifting property to simple morphisms of finite topological spaces. Examples in topology include the notions of: compact, discrete, connected, and totally disconnected spaces, dense image, induced topology, and separation axioms. Examples in algebra include: finite groups being nilpotent, solvable, torsion-free, p-groups, and prime-to-p groups; injective and projective modules; injective, surjective, and split homomorphisms. We include some speculations on the wider significance of this.

Abstract:The lifting theorem of Valdivia concerning (pre) compact sets and convergent (respectively, Cauchy) sequences from a quasi-(LB) space to a metrizable, strictly barrelled space is extended to a strictly larger collection of range spaces. Specifically, we assume that the range space has a sequential web structure and do not require that it be metrizable, nor strictly barrelled, and the range space need not even be barrelled. Distinguishing examples are provided that include natural constructions of range spaces connected with applications, such as the space of distributions having their wavefront sets in a specified closed cone. The same and other examples could also serve as domain spaces for the closed graph theorem of Valdivia, revealing a much wider collection of domain spaces that can be used in that result.

Abstract:We prove that a torsion-free sheaf $\mathcal F$ endowed with a singular hermitian metric with semi-positive curvature and satisfying the minimal extension property admits a direct-sum decomposition $\mathcal F \simeq \mathcal U \oplus \mathcal A$ where $\mathcal U$ is a hermitian flat bundle and $\mathcal A$ is a generically ample sheaf. The result applies to the case of direct images of relative pluricanonical bundles $f_* \omega_{X/Y}^{\otimes m}$ under a surjective morphism $f\colon X \to Y$ of smooth projective varieties with $m\geq 2$. This extends previous results of Fujita, Catanese--Kawamata, and Iwai.

Abstract:The (Local) Lifting Property ((L)LP) is introduced by Kirchberg and deals with lifting completely positive maps. We give a characterization of the (L)LP in terms of lifting $\ast$-homomorphisms. We use it to prove that if $A$ and $B$ have the LP and $F$ is their finite-dimensional C*-subalgebra, then $A\ast_F B$ has the LP. This answers a question of Ozawa.

Lifting twisted coreflections against delta lenses

Abstract:Delta lenses are functors equipped with a suitable choice of lifts, generalising the notion of split opfibration. In recent work, delta lenses were characterised as the right class of an algebraic weak factorisation system. In this paper, we show that this algebraic weak factorisation system is cofibrantly generated by a small double category, and characterise the left class as split coreflections with a certain property; we call these twisted coreflections. We demonstrate that every twisted coreflection arises as a pushout of an initial functor from a discrete category along a bijective-on-objects functor. Throughout the article, we take advantage of a reformulation of algebraic weak factorisation systems, due to Bourke, based on double-categorical lifting operations.

Abstract:A general fixed point theorem for isometries in terms of metric functionals is proved under the assumption of the existence of a conical bicombing. It is new for isometries of convex sets of Banach spaces as well as for non-locally compact CAT(0)-spaces and injective spaces. Examples of actions on non-proper CAT(0)-spaces come from the study of diffeomorphism groups, birational transformations, and compact Kähler manifolds. A special case of the fixed point theorem provides a novel mean ergodic theorem that in the Hilbert space case implies von Neumann's theorem. The theorem accommodates classically fixed-point-free isometric maps such as those of Kakutani, Edelstein, Alspach and Prus. Moreover, from the main theorem together with some geometric arguments of independent interest, one can deduce that every bounded invertible operator of a Hilbert space admits a nontrivial invariant metric functional on the space of positive operators. This is a result in the direction of the invariant subspace problem although its full meaning is dependent on a future determination of such metric functionals.

Abstract:It has long been known that $d$-dimensional Euclidean point sets admit $(1+\epsilon)$-stretch spanners with lightness $W_E = \epsilon^{-O(d)}$, that is total edge weight at most $W_E$ times the weight of the minimum spaning tree of the set [DHN93]. Whether or not a similar result holds for metric spaces with low doubling dimension has remained an important open problem, and has resisted numerous attempts at resolution. In this paper, we resolve the question in the affirmative, and show that doubling spaces admit $(1+\epsilon)$-stretch spanners with lightness $W_D = (ddim/\epsilon)^{O(ddim)}$. Important in its own right, our result also implies a much faster polynomial-time approximation scheme for the traveling salesman problemin doubling metric spaces, improving upon the bound presented in [BGK-12].

Behavioural Metrics: Compositionality of the Kantorovich Lifting and an Application to Up-To Techniques

Abstract:Behavioural distances of transition systems modelled via coalgebras for endofunctors generalize traditional notions of behavioural equivalence to a quantitative setting, in which states are equipped with a measure of how (dis)similar they are. Endowing transition systems with such distances essentially relies on the ability to lift functors describing the one-step behavior of the transition systems to the category of pseudometric spaces. We consider the category theoretic generalization of the Kantorovich lifting from transportation theory to the case of lifting functors to quantale-valued relations, which subsumes equivalences, preorders and (directed) metrics. We use tools from fibred category theory, which allow one to see the Kantorovich lifting as arising from an appropriate fibred adjunction. Our main contributions are compositionality results for the Kantorovich lifting, where we show that that the lifting of a composed functor coincides with the composition of the liftings. In addition, we describe how to lift distributive laws in the case where one of the two functors is polynomial (with finite coproducts). These results are essential ingredients for adapting up-to-techniques to the case of quantale-valued behavioural distances. Up-to techniques are a well-known coinductive technique for efficiently showing lower bounds for behavioural distances. We illustrate the results of our paper in two case studies.

Tensorial structure of the lifting doctrine in constructive domain theory

Abstract:We present a survey of the two-dimensional and tensorial structure of the lifting doctrine in constructive domain theory, i.e. in the theory of directed-complete partial orders (dcpos) over an arbitrary elementary topos. We establish the universal property of lifting of dcpos as the Sierpiński cone, from which we deduce (1) that lifting forms a Kock-Zöberlein doctrine, (2) that lifting algebras, pointed dcpos, and inductive partial orders form canonically equivalent locally posetal 2-categories, and (3) that the category of lifting algebras is cocomplete, with connected colimits created by the forgetful functor to dcpos. Finally we deduce the symmetric monoidal closure of the Eilenberg-Moore resolution of the lifting 2-monad by means of smash products; these are shown to classify both bilinear maps and strict maps, which we prove to coincide in the constructive setting. We provide several concrete computations of the smash product as dcpo coequalisers and lifting algebra coequalisers, and compare these with the more abstract results of Seal. Although all these results are well-known classically, the existing proofs do not apply in a constructive setting; indeed, the classical analysis of the Eilenberg-Moore category of the lifting monad relies on the fact that all lifting algebras are free, a condition that is not known to hold constructively.

Strong minimal model theorem and Massey products

Abstract:Kadeishvili's minimal model theorem establishes the existence of an $A_\infty$-structure, unique up to isomorphism, on the cohomology of a dg associative algebra, which captures its homotopy type. In this note we prove the existence of minimal models that are unique up to isotopy, a stronger result obviously known to T. Kadeishvili and certainly to others, yet seemingly overlooked by mankind. We will explore how this stronger result can help in the study of Massey products. First, we show that the attempts to extract a local information from the ternary operation $\mu_3$ of our minimal model leads directly to the rediscovery of the triple Massey product. The motto is: "The triple Massey product is an invariant manifestation of $\mu_3$." We then prove that, under reasonable assumptions, the higher Massey product $\langle x_1,\ldots,x_n\rangle$ equals the set of all values $\mu_n(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$, where $\mu_n$ runs over the $n$-ary products of our minimal models. We believe that this note will help to elucidate the still somewhat enigmatic relationship between minimal models and Massey products.

Abstract:We prove a new generalization of a theorem of Carleson, namely bounds for a generalized Carleson operator on doubling metric measure spaces. Additionally, we explicitly reduce Carleson's classical result on pointwise convergence of Fourier series to this new theorem. Both proofs are presented in great detail, suitable as a blueprint for computer verification using the current capabilities of the software package Lean. Note that even Carleson's classical result has not yet been computer-verified.

Abstract:In recent times there have been two prominent trends in metric fixed point theory. One is the use of weak contractive inequalities and the other is the use of binary relations. Combining the two trends, in this paper we establish a relation-theoretic fixed point result for a mapping which is defined on a metric space with an arbitrary binary relation and satisfies a weak contractive inequality for any pair of points whenever the pair of points is related by a given relation. The uniqueness is obtained by assuming some extra conditions. The metric space is assumed to be R -complete. We use R -continuity of functions. The property of local T-transitivity of the relation R is used in the main theorem. There is an illustrative example. An existing fixed point result is generalized through the present work. We use a method in the proof of our main theorem which is a blending of relation-theoretic and analytic approaches.

Abstract:Arbitrary connections on a generic Hopf algebra $H$ are studied and shown to extend to connections on tensor fields. On this ground a general definition of metric compatible connection is proposed. This leads to a sufficient criterion for the existence and uniqueness of the Levi-Civita connection, that of invertibility of an $H$-valued matrix. Provided invertibility for one metric, existence and uniqueness of the Levi-Civita connection for all metrics conformal to the initial one is proven. This class consists of metrics which are neither central (bimodule maps) nor equivariant, in general. For central and bicoinvariant metrics the invertibility condition is further simplified to a metric independent one. Examples include metrics on $SL_q(2)$.

Abstract:We present a general fixed point theorem which can be seen as the quintessence of the principles of proof for Banach's Fixed Point Theorem, ultrametric and certain topological fixed point theorems. It works in a minimal setting, not involving any metrics. We demonstrate its applications to the metric, ultrametric and topological cases, and to ordered abelian groups and fields.
Dilation and Model Theory for Pairs of Commuting Contractions

Abstract:This manuscript is an effort to extend the Sz.-Nagy--Foias dilation and model theory for a single contraction to the case of commuting pair of contractions. Fundamental to the Sz.-Nagy--Foias model theory is the functional model for the minimal isometric dilation. The first step in our approach for the pair case is to obtain further information, beyond that in the original paper of Ando, concerning the structure of the plethora of minimal commuting isometric lifts. We exhibit an explicit simple example of two minimal isometric lifts of a commuting contractive pair that are not unitarily equivalent -- see Chapter 5. We provide two constructive new proofs of Ando's Dilation Theorem, each of which leads to a new functional-model representation for such a lift -- see Theorem 4.3.8 and Remark 4.5.7. The construction leads to the identification of a set of additional free parameters which serves to classify the distinct unitary-equivalence classes of minimal Ando lifts. However this lack of uniqueness limits the utility of such minimal Ando lifts for the construction of a functional model for a commuting contractive pair. We identify an intermediate type of lift, called pseudo-commuting contractive lift, which paves the way for a functional model. In the model form, the Sz.-Nagy--Foias characteristic function is augmented by what is called the fundamental operator pair, together with a canonical pair of commuting unitary operators, so that the augmented collection, called the characteristic triple, is a complete unitary invariant for a commuting contractive pair. There is also a notion of admissible triple as the substitute for a purely contractive analytic function in the Sz.-Nagy--Foias theory, from which one can construct a functional model commuting contractive pair having its characteristic triple coinciding with the original admissible triple in an appropriate sense.

Abstract:The manuscript introduces the concept of a double-composed metric-like space, which is an extension of the notion of a double-composed metric space. In this new space, the self-distance is not necessarily zero, but if the distance metric equals zero, it must be for identical points of distance. Furthermore, this paper presents several results related to this novel concept in the literature, with a particular focus on Hardy–Rogers type contractions. It establishes fixed point theorems accompanied by some illustrative examples that elucidate the findings. Finally, this research provides an application to nonlinear integral equation to substantiate our theorems.

Beyond trees: the metric geometry of subsets of weighted Hamming cubes

Abstract:Associated to any finite metric space are a large number of objects and quantities which provide some degree of structural or geometric information about the space. In this paper we show that in the setting of subsets of weighted Hamming cubes there are unexpected relationships between many of these quantities. We obtain in particular formulas for the determinant of the distance matrix, the $M$-constant and the cofactor sum for such spaces. In general, these types of results offer valuable insights into the combinatorial optimization of certain constrained quadratic forms on finite metric spaces. A key focus in this context are embedding properties of negative type metrics, which play a prominent role in addressing important questions like the sparsest cut problem in graph theory. The current work extends previous results for unweighted metric trees, and more generally, for subsets of standard Hamming cubes, as well as results for weighted metric trees. Finally we consider polygonal equalities in these spaces, giving a complete description of the nontrivial $1$-polygonal equalities that can arise in weighted Hamming cubes.

Abstract:In this paper we prove using quite elementary methods, with a combinatorial nature, two general results related to Marstrand's projection theorem in a quite general formulation over metric spaces under a suitable transversality condition (the "projections" are in principle only continuous, and the transversality condition gives flexibility in exponents) - the result is flexible enough to, in particular, recover most of the classical Marstrand-like theorems. We also give some new geometrical applications of our results - one of them is a new result related to Falconer's distance conjecture.
