Abstract:We study transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in dimension 3 preserving a center foliation on which they act quasi-isometrically. We show that the diffeomorphism is up to finite lift and iterate, either a skew-product or a discretised Anosov flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we study transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional topologically neutral center, meaning that the length of the iterate of small center segments remains small. Such systems are dynamically coherent. We show that there exists a continuous metric along the center foliation which is invariant under the dynamics. As an application, we classify the transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on 3-manifolds with topologically neutral center.

Abstract:We prove hyperbolic 3-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a unit quasiconformal deformation of a Kleinian group extends to an equivariant bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between quotients whose pointwise bi-Lipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance form the boundary of the convex core for points in the thick part. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estimates on the complex lengths of short curves. We use this inflexibility to give a new proof of the convergence of pseudo-Anosov double-iteration on the quasi-Fuchsian space of a closed surface, and the resulting hyperbolization theorem for closed 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy.

Abstract:We apply an equivariant version of Perelman's Ricci flow with surgery to study smooth actions by finite groups on closed 3-manifolds. Our main result is that such actions on elliptic and hyperbolic 3-manifolds are conjugate to isometric actions. Combining our results with results by Meeks and Scott [17], it follows that such actions on geometric 3-manifolds (in the sense of Thurston) are always geometric, i.e. there exist invariant locally homogeneous Riemannian metrics. This answers a question posed by Thurston in [32].

Abstract:We show that if a hyperbolic 3-manifold admits a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism then it also admits an Anosov flow. Moreover, we give a complete classification of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism in hyperbolic 3-manifolds as well as partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in Seifert manifolds inducing pseudo-Anosov dynamics in the base. This classification is given in terms of the structure of their center (branching) foliations and the notion of collapsed Anosov flows.

On geodesic embeddings of hyperbolic surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:We consider the problem of when a closed orientable hyperbolic surface admits a totally geodesic embedding into a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold; given a finite isometric group action on the surface, we consider in particular equivariant versions of such an embedding. We prove that an equivariant embedding exists for all finite irreducible group actions on surfaces; such surfaces are known also as quasiplatonic surfaces; in particular, all quasiplatonic surfaces embed geodesically. In the last section, we discuss some cases of more general finite group actions on surfaces.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:For any subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})\ltimes\mathbb{R}^3$ obtained by adding a translation part to a subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ which is the fundamental group of a finite-volume convex projective surface, we first show that under a natural condition on the translation parts of parabolic elements, the affine action of the group on $\mathbb{R}^3$ has convex domains of discontinuity that are regular in a certain sense, generalizing a result of Mess for globally hyperbolic flat spacetimes. We then classify all these domains and show that the quotient of each of them is an affine manifold foliated by convex surfaces with constant affine Gaussian curvature. The proof is based on a correspondence between the geometry of an affine space endowed with a convex cone and the geometry of a convex tube domain. As an independent result, we show that the moduli space of such groups is a vector bundle over the moduli space of finite-volume convex projective structures, with rank equaling the dimension of the Teichmüller space.

On 3-manifolds with locally-standard (Z_2)^3-actions

Abstract:As a generalization of Davis-Januszkiewicz theory, there is an essential link between locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions (or $T^n$-actions) actions and nice manifolds with corners, so that a class of nicely behaved equivariant cut-and-paste operations on locally standard actions can be carried out in step on nice manifolds with corners. Based upon this, we investigate what kinds of closed manifolds admit locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions; especially for the 3-dimensional case. Suppose $M$ is an orientable closed connected 3-manifold. When $H_1(M;\Z_2)=0$, it is shown that $M$ admits a locally standard $(\Z_2)^3$-action if and only if $M$ is homeomorphic to a connected sum of 8 copies of some $\Z_2$-homology sphere $N$, and if further assuming $M$ is irreducible, then $M$ must be homeomorphic to $S^3$. In addition, the argument is extended to rational homology 3-sphere $M$ with $H_1(M;\Z_2) \cong \Z_2$ and an additional assumption that the $(\Z_2)^3$-action has a fixed point.

Abstract:Quasigeodesic behavior of flow lines is a very useful property in the study of Anosov flows. Not every Anosov flow in dimension three is quasigeodesic. In fact up to orbit equivalence, the only previously known examples of quasigeodesic Anosov flows were suspension flows. In this article, we prove that a new class of examples are quasigeodesic. These are the first examples of quasigeodesic Anosov flows on three manifolds that are neither Seifert, nor solvable, nor hyperbolic. In general, it is very hard to show that a given flow in quasigeodesic, and in this article we provide a new method to prove that an Anosov flow is quasigeodesic.

Abstract:In this paper we construct some "pathological" volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on $\toro{3}$ such that their behaviour in small scales in the central direction (Lyapunov exponent) is opposite to the behavior of their linearization. These examples are isotopic to Anosov. We also get partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms isotopic to Anosov (consequently with non-compact central leaves) with zero central Lyapunov exponent at almost every point.
