Abstract:We bring in the techniques of independence complexes and the notion of total dominating sets of a graph to bear on the question of the connectivity of the Vietoris-Rips complexes $VR(Q_n; r)$ of an $n$-hypercube graph. We obtain a lower bound for the connectivity of $VR(Q_n; r)$ for an arbitrary $n$-dimension hypercube and at all scale parameters $r$. The obtained bounds disprove the conjecture of Shukla that $\VR$ is $r$-connected.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with lower bounds for the connectivity of graphs (one-dimensional skeleta) of triangulations of compact manifolds. We introduce a structural invariant bΔb_{\Delta } of a simplicial dd-manifold Δ\Delta taking values in the range 0≤bΔ≤d−10\le b_{\Delta } \le d-1. The main result is that bΔb_\Delta influences connectivity in the following way: The graph of a dd-dimensional simplicial compact manifold Δ\Delta is (2d−bΔ)(2d-b_{\Delta })-connected. The parameter bΔb_{\Delta } has the property that bΔ=0b_{\Delta } =0 if the complex Δ\Delta is flag. Hence, our result interpolates between Barnette’s theorem (1982) that all dd-manifold graphs are (d+1)(d+1)-connected and Athanasiadis’ theorem (2011) that flag dd-manifold graphs are 2d2d-connected. The definition of bΔb_{\Delta } involves the concept of banner triangulations of manifolds, a generalization of flag triangulations.

Abstract:Independence complexes of circle graphs are purely combinatorial objects. However, when constructed from some diagram of a link $L$, they reveal topological properties of $L$, more specifically, of its Khovanov homology. We analyze the homotopy type of independence complexes of circle graphs, with a focus on those arising when the graph is bipartite. Moreover, we compute (real) extreme Khovanov homology of a $4$-strand pretzel knot using chord diagrams and independence complexes.

Abstract:We consider a random geometric hypergraph model based on an underlying bipartite graph. Nodes and hyperedges are sampled uniformly in a domain, and a node is assigned to those hyperedges that lie with a certain radius. From a modelling perspective, we explain how the model captures higher order connections that arise in real data sets. Our main contribution is to study the connectivity properties of the model. In an asymptotic limit where the number of nodes and hyperedges grow in tandem we give a condition on the radius that guarantees connectivity.

On the boundedness of degenerate hypergraphs

Abstract:We investigate the impact of a high-degree vertex in Turán problems for degenerate hypergraphs (including graphs). We say an $r$-graph $F$ is bounded if there exist constants $\alpha, \beta>0$ such that for large $n$, every $n$-vertex $F$-free $r$-graph with a vertex of degree at least $\alpha \binom{n-1}{r-1}$ has fewer than $(1-\beta) \cdot \mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ edges. The boundedness property is crucial for recent works~\cite{HHLLYZ23a,DHLY24} that aim to extend the classical Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem and the anti-Ramsey theorems of Erdős--Simonovits--Sós. We show that many well-studied degenerate hypergraphs, such as all even cycles, most complete bipartite graphs, and the expansion of most complete bipartite graphs, are bounded. In addition, to prove the boundedness of the expansion of complete bipartite graphs, we introduce and solve a Zarankiewicz-type problem for $3$-graphs, strengthening a theorem by Kostochka--Mubayi--Verstraëte~\cite{KMV15}.

Abstract:We provide novel lower bounds on the Betti numbers of Vietoris–Rips complexes of hypercube graphs of all dimensions and at all scales. In more detail, let be the vertex set of vertices in the n -dimensional hypercube graph, equipped with the shortest path metric. Let be its Vietoris–Rips complex at scale parameter , which has as its vertex set, and all subsets of diameter at most r as its simplices. For integers $r<r'$ the inclusion is nullhomotopic, meaning no persistent homology bars have length longer than one, and we therefore focus attention on the individual spaces . We provide lower bounds on the ranks of homology groups of . For example, using cross-polytopal generators, we prove that the rank of is at least . We determine the threshold at which the random $k$-uniform hypergraph with edge probability $p$ becomes $j$-connected with high probability. We also deduce a hitting time result for the random hypergraph process -- the hypergraph becomes $j$-connected at exactly the moment when the last isolated $j$-set disappears. This generalises well-known results for graphs.
Computing the homotopy type and homological invariants of the independence complex of ternary graphs

Abstract:In 2022, Jinha Kim proved a conjecture by Engström that states the independence complex of a graph with no induced cycle of length divisible by 3 is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere. We give criteria for when the independence complex of a ternary graph is contractible, and describe the dimension of the sphere when it is not. We then apply our results to describe the multigraded betti numbers of the edge ideal of a ternary graph. In particular, we show that the regularity and depth of edge ideals of a ternary graph $G$ are equal if and only if the independence complex of $G$ is not contractible. Finally, we apply our results to partially recover and generalize recent results on the depth of edge ideals of some unicyclic graphs.

Star clusters in independence complexes of hypergraphs

Abstract:We study the concept of star clusters in simplicial complexes, which was introduced by Barmak in 2013, by relating it with the structure of hypergraphs that correspond to the simplicial complexes. This implies that for a hypergraph $H$ with a vertex $v$ that is not isolated and not contained in an induced Berge cycle of length $3$, there exists a hypergraph $H'$ with fewer vertices than $H$ such that the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent to the suspension of the independence complex of $H'$. As an application, we also prove that if a hypergraph has no Berge cycle of length $0$ mod $3$, then the sum of all reduced Betti numbers of its independence complex is at most $1$.

Abstract:We generalize some homotopy calculation techniques such as splittings and matching trees that are introduced for the computations in the case of the independence complexes of graphs to arbitrary simplicial complexes. We then exemplify their efficiency on some simplicial complexes, the devoid complexes of graphs, $$\mathcal {D}(G;\mathcal {F})$$ whose faces are vertex subsets of G that induce $$\mathcal {F}$$-free subgraphs, where G is a multigraph and $$\mathcal {F}$$ is a family of multigraphs. Additionally, we compute the homotopy type of dominance complexes of chordal graphs.
On $(n-2)$-connected $2n$-dimensional Poincaré complexes with torsion-free homology

Abstract:Let $X$ be an $(n-2)$-connected $2n$-dimensional Poincaré complex with torsion-free homology, where $n\geq 4$. We prove that $X$ can be decomposed into a connected sum of two Poincaré complexes: one being $(n-1)$-connected, while the other having trivial $n$th homology group. Under the additional assumption that $H_n(X)=0$ and $Sq^2:H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_2)\to H^{n+1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_2)$ is trivial, we can prove that $X$ can be further decomposed into connected sums of Poincaré complexes whose $(n-1)$th homology is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$. As an application of this result, we classify the homotopy types of such $2$-connected $8$-dimensional Poincaré complexes.

Abstract:Each graphon $W:\Omega^2\rightarrow[0,1]$ yields an inhomogeneous random graph model $G(n,W)$. We show that $G(n,W)$ is asymptotically almost surely connected if and only if (i) $W$ is a connected graphon and (ii) the measure of elements of $\Omega$ of $W$-degree less than $\alpha$ is $o(\alpha)$ as $\alpha\rightarrow 0$. These two conditions encapsulate the absence of several linear-sized components, and of isolated vertices, respectively. We study in bigger detail the limit probability of the property that $G(n,W)$ contains an isolated vertex, and, more generally, the limit distribution of the minimum degree of $G(n,W)$.

On the $d$-independence number in 1-planar graphs

Abstract:The $d$-independence number of a graph $G$ is the largest possible size of an independent set $I$ in $G$ where each vertex of $I$ has degree at least $d$ in $G$. Upper bounds for the $d$-independence number in planar graphs are well-known for $d=3,4,5$, and can in fact be matched with constructions that actually have minimum degree $d$. In this paper, we explore the same questions for 1-planar graphs, i.e., graphs that can be drawn in the plane with at most one crossing per edge. We give upper bounds for the $d$-independence number for all $d$. Then we give constructions that match the upper bound, and (for small $d$) also have minimum degree $d$.

Connectivity in the space of framed hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:We prove that the space $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ of framed infinite volume hyperbolic $3$-manifolds is connected but not path connected. Two proofs of connectivity of this space, which is equipped with the geometric topology, are given, each utilizing the density theorem for Kleinian groups. In particular, we decompose $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ into a union of leaves, each leaf corresponding to the set of framings on a fixed manifold, and construct a leaf which is dense in $\mathcal{H}_\infty$. Examples of paths in $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ are discussed, and machinery for analyzing general paths is developed, allowing for a description of paths of convex cocompact framed manifolds. The discussion of paths culminates in describing an infinite family of non-tame hyperbolic $3$-manifolds whose corresponding leaves are path components of $\mathcal{H}_\infty$, which establishes that $\mathcal{H}_\infty$ is not path connected.

Tight Bounds for Connectivity of Random K-out Graphs

Abstract:Random K-out graphs are used in several applications including modeling by sensor networks secured by the random pairwise key predistribution scheme, and payment channel networks. The random K-out graph with $n$ nodes is constructed as follows. Each node draws an edge towards $K$ distinct nodes selected uniformly at random. The orientation of the edges is then ignored, yielding an undirected graph. An interesting property of random K-out graphs is that they are connected almost surely in the limit of large $n$ for any $K \geq2$. This means that they attain the property of being connected very easily, i.e., with far fewer edges ($O(n)$) as compared to classical random graph models including Erdős-Rényi graphs ($O(n \log n)$). This work aims to reveal to what extent the asymptotic behavior of random K-out graphs being connected easily extends to cases where the number $n$ of nodes is small. We establish upper and lower bounds on the probability of connectivity when $n$ is finite. Our lower bounds improve significantly upon the existing results, and indicate that random K-out graphs can attain a given probability of connectivity at much smaller network sizes than previously known. We also show that the established upper and lower bounds match order-wise; i.e., further improvement on the order of $n$ in the lower bound is not possible. In particular, we prove that the probability of connectivity is $1-\Theta({1}/{n^{K^2-1}})$ for all $K \geq 2$. Through numerical simulations, we show that our bounds closely mirror the empirically observed probability of connectivity.
