Abstract:In this note, we reformulate the invariant $\Delta (M, \omega)$ that we defined before, and show its relation with Reidemeister torsion. We calculate $\Delta (M, \omega)$ when the $3$-manifolds are lens spaces, and discuss the classification of the lens spaces using $\Delta (M, \omega)$.

Abstract:Given an oriented closed manifold $M$ of odd dimension and a unitary representation $\rho : \pi_1(M) \ra \GL_n(\F)$, we define a Reidemeister torsion, even if the cohomology associated with $\rho$ is not acyclic. As corollaries, we introduce some topological invariants of $M$, which include the nonacyclic extensions of abelian torsions and the Alexander polynomials of links. Further, we propose a volume form of the $\SU(n)$-character varieties of $M$. Moreover, we compute the Reidemeister torsions of some representations of 3-manifolds and compare the works of Farber--Turaev.

Abstract:We extend basic results in $3$-manifold topology to general three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces (or Alexandrov $3$-spaces for short), providing a unified framework for manifold and non-manifold spaces. We generalize the connected sum to non-manifold $3$-spaces and prove a prime decomposition theorem, exhibit an infinite family of closed, prime non-manifold $3$-spaces which are not irreducible, and establish a conjecture of Mitsuishi and Yamaguchi on the structure of closed, simply-connected Alexandrov $3$-spaces with non-negative curvature. Additionally, we define a notion of generalized Dehn surgery for Alexandrov $3$-spaces and show that any closed Alexandrov $3$-space may be obtained by performing generalized Dehn surgery on a link in $S^3$ or the non-trivial $S^2$-bundle over $S^1$. As an application of this result, we show that every closed Alexandrov $3$-space is homeomorphic to the boundary of a $4$-dimensional Alexandrov space.

Abstract:We establish a connection between the Alexander polynomial of a knot and its twisted and $L^2$-versions with the triangulations that appear in 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. Specifically, we introduce twisted Neumann--Zagier matrices of ordered ideal triangulations and use them to provide formulas for the Alexander polynomial and its variants, the twisted Alexander polynomial and the $L^2$-Alexander torsion.

Abstract:We compute the adjoint twisted Reidemeister torsion for closed oriented hyperbolic 3-manifolds and for hyperbolic 3-manifolds with toroidal boundary. In our formula, we consider the manifold as obtained by doing a Dehn-filling along suitable boundary components of a fundamental shadow link complement, and the formula is in terms of the logarithmic holonomy of the meridians of the boundary components. As an important special case, we also write down a formula of the adjoint twisted Reidemeister torsion for the double of a hyperbolic 3-manifold with totally geodesic boundary in terms of the edge lengths of a geometric ideal triangulation of the manifold. These unexpected formulas were inspired by, and played an important role in, the study of the asymptotic expansion of quantum invariants [25].

A survey on the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki invariant for closed 3-manifolds

Abstract:We review the original approach to the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki (LMO) invariant of closed 3-manifolds (as opposed to the later approach based on the Aarhus integral). Following the ideas of surgery presentation, we introduce a class of combinatorial structures, called Kirby structures, which we prove to yield multiplicative 3-manifold invariants. We illustrate this with the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants. We then introduce a class of combinatorial structures, called pre-LMO structures, and prove that they give rise to Kirby structures. We show how the Kontsevich integral can be used to construct a pre-LMO structure. This yields two families of multiplicative 3-manifolds invariants $\{\Omega_n^{\mathfrak{c}}\}_{n\geq 1}$ and $\{\Omega_n^{\mathfrak{d}}\}_{n\geq 1}$. We review the elimination of redundant information in the latter family, leading to the construction of the LMO invariant. We also provide uniqueness results of some aspects of the LMO construction. The family of invariants $\{\Omega_n^{\mathfrak{c}}\}_{n\geq 1}$ is not discussed explicitly in the literature; whereas $\Omega_n^{\mathfrak{c}}$ enables one to recover $\Omega_n^{\mathfrak{d}}$ for any $n \geq 1$, we show that these invariants coincide for $n = 1$.

Abstract:This note is a sequel to our earlier paper of the same title [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="dg-ga/9710001" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/dg-ga/9710001">dg-ga/9710001</a>] and describes invariants of rational homology 3-spheres associated to acyclic orthogonal local systems. Our work is in the spirit of the Axelrod-Singer papers, generalizes some of their results, and furnishes a new setting for the purely topological implications of their work.

Super-representations of 3-manifolds and torsion polynomials

Abstract:Torsion polynomials connect the genus of a hyperbolic knot (a topological invariant) with the discrete faithful representation (a geometric invariant). Using a new combinatorial structure of an ideal triangulation of a 3-manifold that involves edges as well as faces, we associate a polynomial to a cusped hyperbolic manifold that conjecturally agrees with the $\BC^2$-torsion polynomial, which conjecturally detects the genus of the knot. The new combinatorics is motivated by super-geometry in dimension 3, and more precisely by super-Ptolemy assignments of ideally triangulated 3-manifolds and their $\mathrm{OSp}_{2|1}(\BC)$-representations. Extended section 4, and added superalgebras with a single odd generator.

Abstract:For a non-compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with cusps we prove an explicit formula that relates the regularized analytic torsion associated to the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL_2(C) to the corresponding Reidemeister torsion. Our proof rests on an expression of the analytic torsion in terms of special values of Ruelle zeta functions as well as on recent work of Pere Menal-Ferrer and Joan Porti.

Abstract:Given a pair of (real or complex) Lie algebroid structures on a vector bundle $A$ (over $M$) and its dual $A^*$, and a line bundle $\module$ such that $\module\otimes\module=(\wedge^{\TOP} A^*\otimes\wedge^{\TOP} T^*M)$, there exist two canonically defined differential operators $\bdees$ and $\bdel$ on $\sections{\wedge A\otimes\module}$. We prove that the pair $(A,A^*)$ constitutes a Lie bialgebroid if, and only if, the square of $\bdirac =\bdees+\bdel$ is the multiplication by a function on $M$. As a consequence, we obtain that the pair $(A,A^*)$ is a Lie bialgebroid if, and only if, $\bdirac$ is a Dirac generating operator as defined by Alekseev & Xu \cite{AlekseevXu}. Our approach is to establish a list of new identities relating the Lie algebroid structures on $A$ and $A^*$ (Theorem \ref{Thm:C}).

Abstract:We determine the adjoint Reidemeister torsion of a $3$-manifold obtained by some Dehn surgery along $K$, where $K$ is either the figure-eight knot or the $5_2$-knot. As in a vanishing conjecture, we consider a similar conjecture and show that the conjecture holds for the 3-manifold.

Abstract:We study invariants defined by count of charged, elliptic $J$-holomorphic curves in locally conformally symplectic manifolds. We use this to define $\mathbb{Q} $-valued deformation invariants of certain complete Riemann-Finlser manifolds and their isometries and this is used to find some new phenomena in Riemann-Finlser geometry. In contact geometry this Gromov-Witten theory is used to study fixed Reeb strings of strict contactomorphisms. Along the way, we state an analogue of the Weinstein conjecture in lcs geometry, directly extending the Weinstein conjecture, and discuss various partial verifications. A counterexample for a stronger, also natural form of this conjecture is given.

Invariants for links and 3-manifolds from the modular category with two simple objects

Abstract:We describe the simplest non-trivial modular category $\mathfrak{E}$ with two simple objects. Then we extract from this category the invariant for non-oriented links in 3-sphere and two invariants for 3-manifolds: the complex-valued Turaev - Reshetikhin type invariant $tr_{\varepsilon}$ and the real-valued Turaev - Viro type invariant $tv_{\varepsilon}$. These two invariants for 3-manifolds are related by the equality $|tr_{\varepsilon}|^2\cdot (\varepsilon + 2) = tv_{\varepsilon}$, where $\varepsilon$ is a root of the equation $\varepsilon^2 = \varepsilon + 1$. Finally, we show that $tv_{\varepsilon}$ coincides with the well-known $\varepsilon$ invariant for 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We consider (non-necessarily free) actions of subgroups $H\subset \mathbb Z_2^m$ on the real moment-angle manifold $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P$ corresponding to a simple convex $n$ polytope $P$ with $m$ facets. The criterion when the orbit space $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ is a topological manifold (perhaps with a boundary) can be extracted from results by M.A. Mikhailova and C. Lange. For any dimension $n$ we construct series of manifolds $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ homeomorphic to $S^n$ and series of manifolds $M^n=\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ admitting a hyperelliptic involution $\tau\in\mathbb Z_2^m/H$, that is an involution $\tau$ such that $M^n/\langle\tau\rangle$ is homeomorphic to $S^n$. For any simple $3$-polytope $P$ we classify all subgroups $H\subset\mathbb Z_2^m$ such that $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ is homeomorphic to $S^3$. For any simple $3$-polytope $P$ and any subgroup $H\subset\mathbb Z_2^m$ we classify all hyperelliptic involutions $\tau\in\mathbb Z_2^m/H$ acting on $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$. As a corollary we obtain that a $3$-dimensional small cover has $3$ hyperelliptic involutions in $\mathbb Z_2^3$ if and only if it is a rational homology $3$-sphere and if and only if it correspond to a triple of Hamiltonian cycles such that each edge of the polytope belongs to exactly two of them.

Abstract:The classical Minkowski formula is extended to spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in spacetimes which admit "hidden symmetry" from conformal Killing-Yano two-forms. As an application, we obtain an Alexandrov type theorem for spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in a static spherically symmetric spacetime: a codimension-two submanifold with constant normalized null expansion (null mean curvature) must lie in a shear-free (umbilical) null hypersurface. These results are generalized for higher order curvature invariants. In particular, the notion of mixed higher order mean curvature is introduced to highlight the special null geometry of the submanifold. Finally, Alexandrov type theorems are established for spacelike submanifolds with constant mixed higher order mean curvature, which are generalizations of hypersurfaces of constant Weingarten curvature in the Euclidean space.

Abstract:The logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant counts embeddings of connected trivalent graphs in an oriented rational homology sphere, using integrals on configuration spaces of points in the given manifold. It is a universal finite type invariant of oriented rational homology spheres. The exponential of this invariant is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory. In this article, we give an independent original definition of the degree two part of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant appropriate for concrete computations. This article can also serve as an introduction to the general definition of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant.

On equivariantly formal 2-torus manifolds

Abstract:A 2-torus manifold is a closed connected smooth n-manifold with a non-free effective smooth $\mathbb{Z}^n_2$-action. In this paper, we prove that a 2-torus manifold is equivariantly formal if and only if the $\mathbb{Z}^n_2$-action is locally standard and every face of its orbit space (including the whole orbit space) is mod 2 acyclic. Our study is parallel to the study of torus manifolds with vanishing odd-degree cohomology by M. Masuda and T. Panov. As an application, we determine when such kind of 2-torus manifolds can have regular m-involutions (i.e. involutions with only isolated fixed points of the maximum possible number).

Abstract:Let $M$ be a $3$-manifold with connected non-vacuos boundary which is not spherical. Assume that $N$ is another $3$-manifold with vacuous boundary and $N^{\ast}$ is the $3$-manifold obtained by removing from $N$ the interior of a $3$-cell. In the present paper, we find a relationship between the multiplicative property of the twisted Reidemeister torsion and the connected sum operation on these manifolds in order to understand their topology and geometry.

Abstract:We construct a combinatorial invariant of 3-orbifolds with singular set a link that generalizes the Turaev torsion invariant of 3-manifolds. We give several gluing formulas from which we derive two consequences. The first is an understanding of how the components of the invariant change when we remove a curve from the singular set. The second is a formula relating the invariant of the 3-orbifold to the Turaev torsion invariant of the underlying 3-manifold in the case when the singular set is a nullhomologous knot.

SO(3)-Irreducible Geometry in Complex Dimension Five and Ternary Generalization of Pauli Exclusion Principle

Abstract:We propose a notion of a ternary skew-symmetric covariant tensor of 3rd order, consider it as a 3-dimensional matrix and study a ten-dimensional complex space of these tensors. We split this space into a direct sum of two five-dimensional subspaces and in each subspace there is an irreducible representation of the rotation group SO(3) -> SO(5). We find two independent SO(3)-invariants of ternary skew-symmetric tensors, where one of them is the Hermitian metric and the other is the quadratic form. We find the stabilizer of this quadratic form and its invariant properties. Making use of these invariant properties we define a SO(3)-irreducible geometric structure on a five-dimensional complex Hermitian manifold. We study a connection on a five-dimensional complex Hermitian manifold with a SO(3)-irreducible geometric structure, find its curvature and torsion. The structures proposed in this paper and their study are motivated by a ternary generalization of the Pauli's principle proposed by R. Kerner.
