Abstract:We introduce "book links" as a generalization of braids in open book decompositions; this new class of objects includes both braids and plats as special cases. We then prove a version of Markov's theorem in this general setting by extending the theory of open book foliations.

Abstract:Our main result is a version of Birman's theorem about equivalence of plats, which does not involve stabilization, for the unlink. We introduce the pocket and flip moves, which modify a plat without changing its link type or bridge index. Theorem 1 shows that using the pocket and flip moves, one can simplify any closed $n$-plat presentation of the unknot to the standard 0-crossing diagram of the unknot, through a sequence of plats of non-increasing bridge index. The theorem readily generalises to the case of the unlink.

Abstract:Extended welded links are a generalization of Fenn, Rim\'{a}nyi, and Rourke's welded links. Their braided counterpart are extended welded braids, which are closely related to ribbon braids and loop braids. In this paper we prove versions of Alexander and Markov's theorems for extended welded braids and links, following Kamada's approach to the case of welded objects.

Abstract:The Alexander theorem (1923) and the Markov theorem (1936) are two classical results in knot theory that show respectively that every link is the closure of a braid and that braids that have the same closure are related by a finite number of operations called Markov moves. This paper presents specialized versions of these two classical theorems for a class of links in S3 preserved by an involution, that we call strongly involutive links. When connected, these links are known as strongly invertible knots, and have been extensively studied. We develop an equivariant closure map that, given two palindromic braids, produces a strongly involutive link. We demonstrate that this map is surjective up to equivalence of strongly involutive links. Furthermore, we establish that pairs of palindromic braids that have the same equivariant closure are related by an equivariant version of the original Markov moves.

Studying links via plats: split and composite links

Abstract:Our main results concern changing an arbitrary plat presentation of a split or composite link to one which is obviously recognizable as being split or composite. Pocket moves, first described in \cite{unlinkviaplats}, are utilized -- a pocket move alters a plat presentation without changing its link type, its bridge index or the double coset. A plat presentation of a split link is split if the planar projection of the plat presentation is not connected. We prove that pocket moves are the only obstruction to representing split links by split plat presentations. Since any pocket move corresponds to a sequence of double coset moves, we have the corollary that the double coset of every plat presentation of a split link has a split plat presentation. We obtain an analogous result for composite links by utilizing flip moves, which were also first described in the second author's work,

Abstract:By introducing a modified diagonal matrix h, the properties of Markov moves are examined for the non-standard representations of the braid group associated with the fundamental representations of A(n), B(n), C(n) and D(n). It is shown that link polynomials can be constructed from those braid group representations. The skein relations of link polynomials are obtained explicitly.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

A spectrum connecting the braid index and the bridge index

Abstract:We study the booklink, a braid-like embedding with local maxima and minima, and the bridge-braid spectrum of a link, which captures the smallest number of braid-strands in a booklink with a prescribed number of critical points. This spectrum spans the gap between the classical bridge and braid indices. We apply a foliation theory argument to provide a formula for the spectra of both split and composite links. We then generate a table for the spectra of all prime knots up to 9 crossings.

Abstract:In this self-contained book, following Edward Witten, Maxim Kontsevich, Greg Kuperberg and Dylan Thurston, we define an invariant Z of framed links in rational homology 3-spheres, and we study its properties. The invariant Z, which is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory, is valued in a graded space generated by Jacobi diagrams. It counts embeddings of this kind of unitrivalent graphs in the ambient manifold, in a sense that is explained in the book, using integrals over configuration spaces, or, in a dual way, algebraic intersections in the same configuration spaces. When the ambient manifold is the standard 3-sphere, the invariant Z is a universal Vassiliev link invariant studied by many authors including Guadagnini, Martellini and Mintchev, Bar-Natan, Bott and Taubes, Altschüler and Freidel, Thurston and Poirier... This book contains a more flexible definition of this invariant. We extend Z to a functor on a category of framed tangles in rational homology cylinders and we describe the behaviour of this functor under various operations including some cabling operations. We also compute iterated derivatives of our extended invariant with respect to the discrete derivatives associated to the main theories of finite type invariants. Together with recent results of Massuyeau and Moussard, our computations imply that the restriction of Z to rational homology 3-spheres (equipped with empty links) contains the same information as the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki LMO invariant for these manifolds. They also imply that the degree one part of Z is the Casson-Walker invariant.

Bridge Positions and Plat Presentations of Links

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the relationship between links in bridge position and plat presentations. We will show that the Hilden double coset classes of plat presentations of a link are equivalent to bridge positions of the link up to bridge isotopy. This correspondence allows us to reframe algebraic questions about plat presentations in terms of bridge positions. We demonstrate some results about both plat presentations and links in bridge position using this correspondence. For instance, we reprove that there is only one Hilden double coset class of the n-bridge unknot in $\mathbb{S}^3.$ We also show that there is only a single double coset class for torus knots in plat position. Finally, we discuss how this correspondence may be used to investigate plat closures of knots, which is the subject of ongoing research.

Abstract:The concepts of twisted knot theory and singular knot theory inspire the introduction of singular twisted knot theory. This study showcases similar findings for singular twisted links, including the Alexander theorem and the Markov theorem derived from knot theory. Moreover, in this paper we define singular twisted virtual braids and their monoid structure. Additionally, we provide both a monoid and a reduced monoid presentation for singular twisted virtual braids.

Abstract:Deformations of knots and links in ambient space can be studied combinatorially on their diagrams via local modifications called Reidemeister moves. While it is well-known that, in order to move between equivalent diagrams with Reidemeister moves, one sometimes needs to insert excess crossings, there are significant gaps between the best known lower and upper bounds on the required number of these added crossings. In this article, we study the problem of turning a diagram of a split link into a split diagram, and we show that there exist split links with diagrams requiring an arbitrarily large number of such additional crossings. More precisely, we provide a family of diagrams of split links, so that any sequence of Reidemeister moves transforming a diagram with $c$ crossings into a split diagram requires going through a diagram with $\Omega(\sqrt{c})$ extra crossings. Our proof relies on the framework of bubble tangles, as introduced by Lunel and de Mesmay, and a technique of Chambers and Liokumovitch to turn homotopies into isotopies in the context of Riemannian geometry.

Abstract:Knots naturally appear in continuous dynamical systems as flow periodic trajectories. However, discrete dynamical systems are also closely connected with the theory of knots and links. For example, for Pixton diffeomorphisms, the equivalence class of the Hopf knot, which is the orbit space of the unstable saddle separatrix in the manifold $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{S}^1$, is a complete invariant of the topological conjugacy of the system. In this paper we distinguish a class of three-dimensional Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms for which the complete invariant of topological conjugacy is the equivalence class of a link in $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{S}^1$. We proved that if $M$ is a link complement in $\mathbb{S}^3$ (in particular, is $\mathbb{S}^3$), or a handlebody $H_g$ of genus $g \geq 0$, or closed, connected, orientable 3-manifold, then the set of equivalence classes of tame links in $M$ is countable. As corollary we get that in $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{S}^1$ there exists a countable number of equivalence classes of tame links. It is proved that any essential link can be realized by a diffeomorphism of the class under consideration.

Abstract:In this paper, we find a more straightforward problem that is equivalent to one of the major challenges in knot theory: the classification of links in the 3-sphere. More precisely, we provide a simpler braid description for all links in the 3-sphere in terms of generalised T-links. With this, we translate the problem of classifying links in the 3-sphere into a problem of counting the number of generalised T-links that represent the same link. Generalised T-links are a natural generalisation of twisted torus links and Lorenz links, two families of links that have been extensively studied by many people. Moreover, we generalise the bunch algorithm to construct links embedded in universal Lorenz-like templates and provide an upper volume bound that is quadratic in the trip number. We use the upper bound obtained from the generalised bunch algorithm for generalised T-links to establish an upper bound for the sum of the volumes of the hyperbolic pieces of all closed, orientable, connected 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Lorenz links and T-links are equivalent families of links by Birman and Kofman. Lorenz links are periodic orbits of the Lorenz system. T-links are links given by certain positive braids. Birman, Williams, and Franks proved that every Lorenz link has a positive braid with at least one full twist as a minimal braid. In this paper we study the geometric types of the Lorenz links from their minimal braid perspective. First, we compute their minimal braids explicitly in terms of the parameters of the T-links. We conclude that they are in equivalence with a family of links, called V-links, similar to a result of Birman and Kofman. Furthermore, we find an explicit relation to obtain an element of one of these families from the other. Then, we study conditions on positive braids with at least one full twist to find their geometric type. Finally, we apply these conditions on V-links to find new and generalize some families of satellite and hyperbolic T-links.

Abstract:All knots have been shown to be isotopic to the unknot using a process known as virtualization. We extend and adapt this process to show that, up to fused isotopy, classical links are classified by their linking numbers. We provide an algebraic proof, utilizing Alexander’s Theorem and some simple results about the pure braid group.

Abstract:We introduce a new technique for showing classical knots and links are not slice. As one application we resolve a long-standing question as to whether certain natural families of knots contain topologically slice knots. We also present a simpler proof of the result of Cochran-Teichner that the successive quotients of the integral terms of the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration of the knot concordance group have rank 1. For links we have similar results. We show that the iterated Bing doubles of many algebraically slice knots are not topologically slice. Some of the proofs do not use the existence of the Cheeger-Gromov bound, a deep analytical tool used by Cochran-Teichner. Our main examples are actually boundary links but cannot be detected in the algebraic boundary link concordance group, nor by any $\rho$ invariants associated to solvable representations into finite unitary groups.

Abstract:We suggest a new random model for links based on meander diagrams and graphs. We then prove that trivial links appear with vanishing probability in this model, no link L is obtained with probability 1, and there is a lower bound for the number of non-isotopic knots obtained for a fixed number of crossings. A random meander diagram is obtained through matching pairs of parentheses, a well-studied problem in combinatorics. Hence tools from combinatorics can be used to investigate properties of random links in this model, and, moreover, of the respective 3-manifolds that are link complements in 3-sphere. We use this for exploring geometric properties of a link complement. Specifically, we give expected twist number of a link diagram and use it to bound expected hyperbolic and simplicial volume of random links. The tools from combinatorics that we use include Catalan and Narayana numbers, and Zeilberger's algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a connection between Apollonian packings and knot theory. We introduce new representations of links realized in the tangency graph of the regular crystallographic sphere packings. Particularly, we prove that any algebraic link can be realized in the cubic section of the orthoplicial Apollonian packing. We use these representations to improve the upper bound on the ball number of an infinite family of alternating algebraic links. Furthermore, the later allow us to reinterpret the correspondence of rational tangles and rational numbers and to reveal geometrically primitive solutions for the Diophantine equation $x^4 + y^4 + z^4 = 2t^2$.
