Abstract:It has long been known that (classical) Peano arithmetic is, in some strong sense, "equivalent" to the variant of (classical) Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (including choice) in which the axiom of infinity is replaced by its negation. The intended model of the latter is the set of hereditarily finite sets. The connection between the theories is so tight that they may be taken as notational variants of each other. Our purpose here is to develop and establish a constructive version of this. We present an intuitionistic theory of the hereditarily finite sets, and show that it is definitionally equivalent to Heyting Arithmetic HA , in a sense to be made precise. Our main target theory, the intuitionistic small set theory SST is remarkably simple, and intuitive. It has just one non-logical primitive, for membership, and three straightforward axioms plus one axiom scheme. We locate our theory within intuitionistic mathematics generally.

Reducing $ω$-model reflection to iterated syntactic reflection

Abstract:In mathematical logic there are two seemingly distinct kinds of principles called "reflection principles." Semantic reflection principles assert that if a formula holds in the whole universe, then it holds in a set-sized model. Syntactic reflection principles assert that every provable sentence from some complexity class is true. In this paper we study connections between these two kinds of reflection principles in the setting of second-order arithmetic. We prove that, for a large swathe of theories, $\omega$-model reflection is equivalent to the claim that arbitrary iterations of uniform $\Pi^1_1$ reflection along countable well-orderings are $\Pi^1_1$-sound. This result yields uniform ordinal analyses of theories with strength between $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ and $\mathsf{ATR}$. The main technical novelty of our analysis is the introduction of the notion of the proof-theoretic dilator of a theory $T$, which is the operator on countable ordinals that maps the order-type of $\prec$ to the proof-theoretic ordinal of $T+\mathsf{WO}(\prec)$. We obtain precise results about the growth of proof-theoretic dilators as a function of provable $\omega$-model reflection. This approach enables us to simultaneously obtain not only $\Pi^0_1$, $\Pi^0_2$, and $\Pi^1_1$ ordinals but also reverse-mathematical theorems for well-ordering principles.

Abstract:A cyclic proof system gives us another way of representing inductive definitions and efficient proof search. In 2011 Brotherston and Simpson conjectured the equivalence between the provability of the classical cyclic proof system and that of the classical system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions. This paper studies the conjecture for intuitionistic logic. This paper first points out that the countermodel of FOSSACS 2017 paper by the same authors shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is false in general. Then this paper shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is true under arithmetic, namely, the provability of the intuitionistic cyclic proof system is the same as that of the intuitionistic system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions when both systems contain Heyting arithmetic HA. For this purpose, this paper also shows that HA proves Podelski-Rybalchenko theorem for induction and Kleene-Brouwer theorem for induction. These results immediately give another proof to the conjecture under arithmetic for classical logic shown in LICS 2017 paper by the same authors.
Reflection ranks via infinitary derivations

Abstract:There is no infinite sequence of $\Pi^1_1$-sound extensions of $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ each of which proves $\Pi^1_1$-reflection of the next. This engenders a well-founded ``reflection ranking'' of $\Pi^1_1$-sound extensions of $\mathsf{ACA}_0$. For any $\Pi^1_1$-sound theory $T$ extending $\mathsf{ACA}^+_0$, the reflection rank of $T$ equals the proof-theoretic ordinal of $T$. This provides an alternative characterization of the notion of ``proof-theoretic ordinal,'' which is one of the central concepts of proof theory. In this note we provide an alternative proof of this theorem using cut-elimination for infinitary derivations.

Abstract:We deal with the fragment of modal logic consisting of implications of formulas built up from the variables and the constant `true' by conjunction and diamonds only. The weaker language allows one to interpret the diamonds as the uniform reflection schemata in arithmetic, possibly of unrestricted logical complexity. We formulate an arithmetically complete calculus with modalities labeled by natural numbers and \omega, where \omega corresponds to the full uniform reflection schema, whereas n<\omega corresponds to its restriction to arithmetical \Pi_{n+1}-formulas. This calculus is shown to be complete w.r.t. a suitable class of finite Kripke models and to be decidable in polynomial time.

A Reflection Principle for Potential Infinite Models of Type Theory

Abstract:Denotational models of type theory, such as set-theoretic, domain-theoretic, or category-theoretic models use (actual) infinite sets of objects in one way or another. The potential infinite, seen as an extensible finite, requires a dynamic understanding of the infinite sets of objects. It follows that the type $nat$ cannot be interpreted as a set of all natural numbers, $\lbrack\!\lbrack nat \rbrack\!\rbrack = \mathbb{N}$, but as an increasing family of finite sets $\mathbb{N}_i = \{0, \dots, i-1\}$. Any reference to $\lbrack\!\lbrack nat \rbrack\!\rbrack$, either by the formal syntax or by meta-level concepts, must be a reference to a (sufficiently large) set $\mathbb{N}_i$. We present the basic concepts for interpreting a fragment of the simply typed $\lambda$-calculus within such a dynamic model. A type $\varrho$ is thereby interpreted as a process, which is formally a factor system together with a limit of it. A factor system is very similar to a direct or an inverse system, and its limit is also defined by a universal property. It is crucial to recognize that a limit is not necessarily an unreachable end beyond the process. Rather, it can be regarded as an intermediate state within the factor system, which can still be extended. The logical type $bool$ plays an important role, which we interpret classically as the set $\{true, false\}$. We provide an interpretation of simply typed $\lambda$-terms in these factor systems and limits. The main result is a reflection principle, which states that an element in the limit has a ``full representative'' at a sufficiently large stage within the factor system. For propositions, that is, terms of type $bool$, this implies that statements about the limit are true if and only if they are true at that sufficiently large stage.

Abstract:Feferman proved in 1962 that any arithmetical theorem is a consequence of a suitable transfinite iteration of full uniform reflection of $\mathsf{PA}$. This result is commonly known as Feferman's completeness theorem. The purpose of this paper is twofold. On the one hand this is an expository paper, giving two new proofs of Feferman's completeness theorem that, we hope, shed light on this mysterious and often overlooked result. On the other hand, we combine one of our proofs with results from computable structure theory due to Ash and Knight to give sharp bounds on the order types of well-orders necessary to attain the completeness for levels of the arithmetical hierarchy.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic study of the prehistory of the traditional subsystems of second-order arithmetic that feature prominently in the reverse mathematics program of Friedman and Simpson. We look in particular at: (i) the long arc from Poincaré to Feferman as concerns arithmetic definability and provability, (ii) the interplay between finitism and the formalization of analysis in the lecture notes and publications of Hilbert and Bernays, (iii) the uncertainty as to the constructive status of principles equivalent to Weak König's Lemma, and (iv) the large-scale intellectual backdrop to arithmetical transfinite recursion in descriptive set theory and its effectivization by Borel, Lusin, Addison, and others.

Abstract:Bounded stationary reflection at a cardinal $\lambda$ is the assertion that every stationary subset of $\lambda$ reflects but there is a stationary subset of $\lambda$ that does not reflect at arbitrarily high cofinalities. We produce a variety of models in which bounded stationary reflection holds. These include models in which bounded stationary reflection holds at the successor of every singular cardinal $\mu > \aleph_\omega$ and models in which bounded stationary reflection holds at $\mu^+$ but the approachability property fails at $\mu$.

Abstract:We propose a realizability interpretation of a system for quantifier free arithmetic which is equivalent to the fragment of classical arithmetic without "nested" quantifiers, called here EM1-arithmetic. We interpret classical proofs as interactive learning strategies, namely as processes going through several stages of knowledge and learning by interacting with the "environment" and with each other. We give a categorical presentation of the interpretation through the construction of two suitable monads.

Abstract:We introduce and consider the inner-model reflection principle, which asserts that whenever a statement $\varphi(a)$ in the first-order language of set theory is true in the set-theoretic universe $V$, then it is also true in a proper inner model $W\subsetneq V$. A stronger principle, the ground-model reflection principle, asserts that any such $\varphi(a)$ true in $V$ is also true in some non-trivial ground model of the universe with respect to set forcing. These principles each express a form of width reflection in contrast to the usual height reflection of the Lévy-Montague reflection theorem. They are each equiconsistent with ZFC and indeed $\Pi_2$-conservative over ZFC, being forceable by class forcing while preserving any desired rank-initial segment of the universe. Furthermore, the inner-model reflection principle is a consequence of the existence of sufficient large cardinals, and lightface formulations of the reflection principles follow from the maximality principle MP and from the inner-model hypothesis IMH. We also consider some questions concerning the expressibility of the principles.

Abstract:We present an intuitionistic interpretation of Euler-Venn diagrams with respect to Heyting algebras. In contrast to classical Euler-Venn diagrams, we treat shaded and missing zones differently, to have diagrammatic representations of conjunction, disjunction and intuitionistic implication. We present a cut-free sequent calculus for this language, and prove it to be sound and complete. Furthermore, we show that the rules of cut, weakening and contraction are admissible.

Abstract:This paper explores the semantics of a combinatory fragment of reFLect, the lambda-calculus underlying a functional language used by Intel Corporation for hardware design and verification. ReFLect is similar to ML, but has a primitive data type whose elements are the abstract syntax trees of reFLect expressions themselves. Following the LCF paradigm, this is intended to serve as the object language of a higher-order logic theorem prover for specification and reasoning - but one in which object- and meta-languages are unified. The aim is to intermix program evaluation and logical deduction through reflection mechanisms. We identify some difficulties with the semantics of reFLect as currently defined, and propose a minimal modification of the type system that avoids these problems.

Abstract Vergleichsstellensätze for preordered semifields and semirings II

Abstract:The present paper continues our foundational work on real algebra with preordered commutative semifields and semirings. We prove two abstract Vergleichsstellensätze for preordered commutative semirings of polynomial growth. These generalize the results of Part I by no longer assuming $1 \ge 0$. Such a generalization comes with substantial technical complications: our Vergleichsstellensätze now also need to take into account infinitesimal information encoded in the form of monotone derivations in addition to the monotone homomorphisms to the nonnegative reals and tropical reals. The auxiliary technical results we develop along the way include surprising implications between inequalities in preordered semifields and a type classification for multiplicatively Archimedean fully preordered semifields. Among other applications, two companion papers use these results in order to derive limit new results in probability and information theory; one on asymptotics of random walks on topological abelian groups, and the other on the asymptotics of matrix majorization.

Abstract:We consider non-linear changes of variables and Fubini's theorem for certain integrals over a two-dimensional local field. An interesting example is presented in which imperfectness of a finite characteristic local field causes Fubini's theorem to unexpectedly fail. The relationship to ramification theory is discussed.
