Abstract:Let $K$ be a field, and let $f\in K(z)$ be a rational function of degree $d\geq 2$. The Galois group of the field extension generated by the preimages of $x_0\in K$ under all iterates of $f$ naturally embeds in the automorphism group of an infinite $d$-ary rooted tree. In some cases the Galois group can be the full automorphism group of the tree, but in other cases it is known to have infinite index. In this paper, we consider a previously unstudied such case: that $f$ is a polynomial of degree $d=3$, and the two finite critical points of $f$ collide at the $\ell$-th iteration, for some $\ell\geq 2$. We describe an explicit subgroup $Q_{\ell,\infty}$ of automorphisms of the $3$-ary tree in which the resulting Galois group must always embed, and we present sufficient conditions for this embedding to be an isomorphism.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field, and let $f\in K(z)$ be rational function. The preimages of a point $x_0\in P^1(K)$ under iterates of $f$ have a natural tree structure. As a result, the Galois group of the resulting field extension of $K$ naturally embeds into the automorphism group of this tree. In unpublished work from 2013, Pink described a certain proper subgroup $M_{\ell}$ that this so-called arboreal Galois group $G_{\infty}$ must lie in if $f$ is quadratic and its two critical points collide at the $\ell$-th iteration. After presenting a new description of $M_{\ell}$ and a new proof of Pink's theorem, we state and prove necessary and sufficient conditions for $G_{\infty}$ to be the full group $M_{\ell}$.

Non-abelian arboreal Galois groups associated to PCF rational maps

Abstract:We prove that arboreal Galois extensions of number fields are never abelian for post-critically finite rational maps and non-preperiodic base points. For polynomials, this establishes a new class of known cases of a conjecture of Andrews-Petsche. Together with a result of Ferraguti-Ostafe-Zannier, this result implies that counterexamples to the conjecture, if they exist, are sparse. We also prove an auxiliary result on places of periodic reduction for rational maps, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:It is the main objective of this paper to show a vanishing result for cuspidal cohomology of arithmetic groups in classical groups~$G$ defined over some number field~$k$.Our approach relies on the fact that cuspidal automorphic forms are nonsingular in the sense of Howe. This result puts a strong constraint on the (archimedean components of) irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of $G$that can possibly contribute to the cuspidal cohomology. Combining this with the classification of Vogan-Zuckerman of unitary representations with nonzero cohomologyprovides a constant $r_0(G/k)$, only depending on $G/k$, below which the cuspidal cohomology vanishes. We will give a formula for this constant for each classical group of type (I) in the classification scheme due to Weil. We conclude with making this result explicit for some split classical groups over a totally real algebraic number field.

Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, let $v$ be a finite place of $K$, let $f\in K[z]$ be a degree $d\geqslant2$ polynomial with $v|d$, and let $a\in K$. We show that if $f$ is postcritically bounded and has potential good reduction with respect to $v$, then the arboreal representation associated to the pair $(f,a)$ is either finite or infinitely wildly ramified above $v$.

Abstract:We prove a non-abelian arboreal Galois group result for certain maps with non-real Julia set at an archimedean place. We investigate the question of determining which polynomials defined over $\mathbb{R}$ have real Julia set. Finally we show that for some certain classes of Lattès maps associated to the duplication map on an elliptic curve has non-abelian arboreal Galois groups.

Abstract:We study the forward orbit of the critical point for polynomials of the form $f_c=z^2+c$ defined over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. Hubbard trees capture the dynamical behavior for such maps with finite critical orbit in $\mathbb{C}$. We suggest a notion of Hubbard trees in the non-Archimedean setting, and describe the possible structures that arise for polynomials in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. As an example, we take a closer look at the dynamics of $f_c$ for $c\in\mathbb{Z}_3$.

Abelian dynamical Galois groups for unicritical polynomials

Abstract:Andrews and Petsche proposed in 2020 a conjectural characterization of all pairs $(f,\alpha)$, where $f$ is a polynomial over a number field $K$ and $\alpha\in K$, such that the dynamical Galois group of the pair $(f,\alpha)$ is abelian. In this paper we focus on the case of unicritical polynomials $f$, and more general dynamical systems attached to sequences of unicritical polynomials. After having reduced the conjecture to the post-critically finite case, we establish it for all polynomials with periodic critical orbit, over any number field. We next establish the conjecture in full for all monic unicritical polynomials over any quadratic number field. Finally we show that for any given degree $d$ there exists a finite, explicit set of unicritical polynomials that depends only on $d$, such that if $f=ux^d+1$ is a unicritical polynomial over a number field $K$ that lies outside such exceptional set, then there are at most finitely many basepoints $\alpha$ such that the dynamical Galois group of $(f,\alpha)$ is abelian. To obtain these results, we exploit in multiple ways the group theory of the generic dynamical Galois group to force diophantine relations in dynamical quantities attached to $f$. These relations force in all cases, outside of the ones conjectured by Andrews--Petsche, a contradiction either with lower bounds on the heights in abelian extensions, in the style of Amoroso--Zannier, or with the computation of rational points on explicit curves, carried out with techniques from Balakrishnan--Tuitman and Siksek.

Abstract:We study algebraic relations among postcritically finite (PCF) parameters in the family $f_c(z) = z^2 + c$. Ghioca, Krieger, Nguyen and Ye proved that an algebraic curve in $\mathbb{C}^2$ contains infinitely many PCF pairs $(c_1, c_2)$ if and only if the curve is special (i.e., the curve is a vertical or horizontal line through a PCF parameter, or the curve is the diagonal). Here we extend this result to subvarieties of $\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\geq 2$. Consequently, we obtain uniform bounds on the number of PCF pairs on non-special curves in $\mathbb{C}^2$ and the number of PCF parameters in real algebraic curves in $\mathbb{C}$, depending only on the degree of the curve. We also compute the optimal bound for the general curve of degree $d$.

Monogenic Quartic Polynomials and Their Galois Groups

Abstract:A monic polynomial $f(x)\in {\mathbb Z}[x]$ of degree $N$ is called monogenic if $f(x)$ is irreducible over ${\mathbb Q}$ and $\{1,\theta,\theta^2,\ldots ,\theta^{N-1}\}$ is a basis for the ring of integers of ${\mathbb Q}(\theta)$, where $f(\theta)=0$. In this article, we use the classification of the Galois groups of quartic polynomials, due to Kappe and Warren, to investigate the existence of infinite collections of monogenic quartic polynomials having a prescribed Galois group, such that each member of the collection generates a distinct quartic field. With the exception of the cyclic case, we provide such an infinite single-parameter collection for each possible Galois group. We believe these examples are new, and we provide evidence to support this belief by showing that they are distinct from other infinite collections in the current literature. Finally, we devote a separate section to a discussion concerning, what we believe to be, the still-unresolved cyclic case.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

Abstract:We discuss, in a non-archimedean setting, the distribution of the coefficients of L-polynomials of curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This allows us to prove, among other things, that the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space spanned by such characteristic polynomials has dimension $g+1$. We also state a conjecture about the archimedean distribution of the number of rational points of curves over finite fields.

Automatic convergence and arithmeticity of modular forms on exceptional groups

Abstract:We prove that the space of cuspidal quaternionic modular forms on the groups of type $F_4$ and $E_n$ have a purely algebraic characterization. This characterization involves Fourier coefficients and Fourier-Jacobi expansions of the cuspidal modular forms. The main component of the proof of the algebraic characterization is to show that certain infinite sums, which are potentially the Fourier expansion of a cuspidal modular form, converge absolutely. As a consequence of the algebraic characterization, we deduce that the cuspidal quaternionic modular forms have a basis consisting of forms all of whose Fourier coefficients are algebraic numbers.

Abstract:Quadratic groups, whose definitions depend on form parameters, contain the orthogonal groups, symplectic groups, classical unitary groups and all the classical groups of Dieudonne [4] as well as those of Bruhat and Tits [2]. Gauss decomposition with prescribed semisimple part in these groups is presented. As an application, the analog of a conjecture of Thompson is also studied for these groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and, for a given complex character $\chi$ of $G$, let ${\mathbb{Q}}(\chi)$ denote the field extension of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ obtained by adjoining all the values $\chi(g)$, for $g\in G$. The group $G$ is called quadratic rational if, for every irreducible complex character $\chi\in{\rm{Irr}}(G)$, the field ${\mathbb{Q}}(\chi)$ is an extension of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ of degree at most $2$. Quadratic rational groups have a nice characterization in terms of the structure of the group of central units in their integral group ring, and in fact they generalize the well-known concept of a cut group (i.e., a finite group whose integral group ring has a finite group of central units). In this paper we classify the Frobenius groups that are quadratic rational, a crucial step in the project of describing the Gruenberg-Kegel graphs associated to quadratic rational groups. It turns out that every Frobenius quadratic rational group is uniformly semi-rational, i.e., it satisfies the following property: all the generators of any cyclic subgroup of $G$ lie in at most two conjugacy classes of $G$, and these classes are permuted by the same element of the Galois group ${\rm{Gal}}({\mathbb{Q}}_{|G|}/{\mathbb{Q}})$ (in general, every cut group is uniformly semi-rational, and every uniformly semi-rational group is quadratic rational). We will also see that the class of groups here considered coincides with the one studied in [4], thus the main result of this paper also completes the analysis carried out in [4].

Abstract:Let F be a field of characteristic 0, and let f(x)=x8+ax6+bx4+ax2+1∈F[x] be irreducible with Galois group Gal(f) . We extend results in the literature to give a complete and elementary classification of Gal(f) , identified as a transitive subgroup of S 8 up to conjugacy. The approach involves testing whether a small number of elements in F are perfect squares. As an application, we give one-parameter families of polynomials for each of the six possible Galois groups.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Abstract:A monic polynomial $f(x)\in {\mathbb Z}[x]$ of degree $N$ is called monogenic if $f(x)$ is irreducible over ${\mathbb Q}$ and $\{1,\theta,\theta^2,\ldots ,\theta^{N-1}\}$ is a basis for the ring of integers of ${\mathbb Q}(\theta)$, where $f(\theta)=0$. In a series of recent articles, complete classifications of the Galois groups were given for irreducible polynomials \[{\mathcal F}(x):=x^8+ax^4+b\in {\mathbb Z}[x]\] and \[{\mathcal G}(x):=x^8+ax^6+bx^4+ax^2+1\in {\mathbb Z}[x], \quad a\ne 0.\] In this article, for each Galois group $G$ arising in these classifications, we either construct an infinite family of monogenic octic polynomials ${\mathcal F}(x)$ or ${\mathcal G}(x)$ having Galois group $G$, or we prove that at most a finite such family exists. In the finite family situations, we determine all such polynomials. Here, a ``family" means that no two polynomials in the family generate isomorphic octic fields.
