Non-Promise Version of Unique Sink Orientations

Abstract:A unique sink orientation (USO) is an orientation of the edges of a hypercube such that each face has a unique sink. Many optimization problems like linear programs reduce to USOs, in the sense that each vertex corresponds to a possible solution, and the global sink corresponds to the optimal solution. People have been studying intensively the problem of find the sink of a USO using vertex evaluations, i.e., queries which return the orientation of the edges around a vertex. This problem is a so called promise problem, as it assumes that the orientation it receives is a USO. In this paper, we analyze a non-promise version of the USO problem, in which we try to either find a sink or an efficiently verifiable violation of the USO property. This problem is worth investigating, because some problems which reduce to USO are also promise problems (and so we can also define a non-promise version for them), and it would be interesting to discover where USO lies in the hierarchy of subclasses of $\texttt{TFNP}^\texttt{dt}$, and for this a total search problem is required (which is the case for the non-promise version). We adapt many known properties and algorithms from the promise version to the non-promise one, including known algorithms for small dimensions and lower and upper bounds, like the Fibonacci Seesaw Algorithm. Furthermore, we present an efficient resolution proof of the problem, which shows it is in the search complexity class $\texttt{PLS}^\texttt{dt}$ (although this fact was already known via reductions). Finally, although initially the only allowed violations consist of $2$ vertices, we generalize them to more vertices, and provide a full categorization of violations with $4$ vertices, showing that they are also efficiently verifiable.

Abstract:Recently, Buan and Marsh showed that if two complete $\tau$-exceptional sequences agree in all but at most one term, then they must agree everywhere, provided the algebra is $\tau$-tilting finite. They conjectured that the result holds without that assumption. We prove their conjecture. Along the way, we also show that the dimension vectors of the modules in a $\tau$-exceptional sequence are linearly independent.

Effective atypical intersections and applications to orbit closures

Abstract:We propose a unifying setting for dealing with monodromically atypical intersections that goes beyond the usual Zilber-Pink conjecture. In particular we obtain a new proof of finiteness of the maximal atypical orbit closures in each stratum of translation surfaces $\Omega \mathcal{M}_g (\kappa)$, as given by Eskin, Filip, and Wright. We also describe a concrete algorithm, implementable in principle on a computer, which provably computes all maximal orbit closures which are 'atypical' in a sense described by Filip. The same methods also give a general algorithm for computing atypical special loci associated to systems of differential equations, and in particular give an effective and o-minimal free proof of the geometric Zilber-Pink conjecture variations of mixed Hodge structures.

On the Emergence of Ergodic Dynamics in Unique Games

Abstract:The Unique Games Conjecture (UGC) constitutes a highly dynamic subarea within computational complexity theory, intricately linked to the outstanding P versus NP problem. Despite multiple insightful results in the past few years, a proof for the conjecture remains elusive. In this work, we construct a novel dynamical systems-based approach for studying unique games and, more generally, the field of computational complexity. We propose a family of dynamical systems whose equilibria correspond to solutions of unique games and prove that unsatisfiable instances lead to ergodic dynamics. Moreover, as the instance hardness increases, the weight of the invariant measure in the vicinity of the optimal assignments scales polynomially, sub-exponentially, or exponentially depending on the value gap. We numerically reproduce a previously hypothesized hardness plot associated with the UGC. Our results indicate that the UGC is likely true, subject to our proposed conjectures that link dynamical systems theory with computational complexity.

On Phases of Unique Sink Orientations

Abstract:A unique sink orientation (USO) is an orientation of the $n$-dimensional hypercube graph such that every non-empty face contains a unique sink. Schurr showed that given any $n$-dimensional USO and any dimension $i$, the set of edges $E_i$ in that dimension can be decomposed into equivalence classes (so-called phases), such that flipping the orientation of a subset $S$ of $E_i$ yields another USO if and only if $S$ is a union of a set of these phases. In this paper we prove various results on the structure of phases. Using these results, we show that all phases can be computed in $O(3^n)$ time, significantly improving upon the previously known $O(4^n)$ trivial algorithm. Furthermore, we show that given a boolean circuit of size $poly(n)$ succinctly encoding an $n$-dimensional (acyclic) USO, it is PSPACE-complete to determine whether two given edges are in the same phase. The problem is thus equally difficult as determining whether the hypercube orientation encoded by a given circuit is an acyclic USO [Gärtner and Thomas, STACS'15].

Abstract:Unique Sink Orientations (USOs) of cubes can be used to capture the combinatorial structure of many essential algebraic and geometric problems. For various structural and algorithmic questions, including enumeration of USOs and algorithm analysis, it is crucial to have systematic constructions of USOs. While some construction methods for USOs already exist, each one of them has some significant downside. Most of the construction methods have limited expressivity -- USOs with some desired properties cannot be constructed. In contrast, the phase flips of Schurr can construct all USOs, but the operation is not well understood. We were inspired by techniques from cube tilings of space; we expand upon existing techniques in the area to develop generalized rewriting rules for USOs. These rewriting rules are a new construction framework which can be applied to all USOs. The rewriting rules can generate every USO using only USOs of lower dimension. The effect of any specific rewriting rule on an USO is simple to understand. A special case of our construction produces a new elementary transformation of USOs, which we call a partial swap. We further investigate the relationship between partial swaps and phase flips and generalize partial swaps to phase swaps.

Abstract:We study the extent to which it is possible to approximate the optimal value of a Unique Games instance in Fixed-Point Logic with Counting (FPC). Formally, we prove lower bounds against the accuracy of FPC-interpretations that map Unique Games instances (encoded as relational structures) to rational numbers giving the approximate fraction of constraints that can be satisfied. We prove two new FPC-inexpressibility results for Unique Games: the existence of a -inapproximability gap, and inapproximability to within any constant factor. Previous recent work has established similar FPC-inapproximability results for a small handful of other problems. Our construction builds upon some of these ideas, but contains a novel technique. While most FPC-inexpressibility results are based on variants of the CFI-construction, ours is significantly different. We start with a graph of very large girth and label the edges with random affine vector spaces over that determine the constraints in the two structures. Duplicator's strategy involves maintaining a partial isomorphism over a minimal tree that spans the pebbled vertices of the graph.

Abstract:The Theory of Everything ($S_{\text{ToE}}$) seeks to unify all fundamental forces of nature, including quantum gravity, into a single theoretical framework. This theory would be defined internally using a set of axioms, and this paper proposes a set of axioms for any such theory. Furthermore, for such a theory, all scientific truth would be defined internally as consequences derivable from the rules of such a theory. This paper then examines the implications of Tarski's undefinability theorem on scientific truths derived from such axioms. We demonstrate that Tarski's theorem imposes limitations on any such formal system $S_{\text{ToE}}$. However, we also argue that the Lucas-Penrose argument suggests that non-algorithmic understanding can transcend these formal limitations.

A Topological Version of Schaefer's Dichotomy Theorem

Abstract:Schaefer's dichotomy theorem [Schaefer, STOC'78] states that a boolean constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is polynomial-time solvable if one of six given conditions holds for every type of constraint allowed in its instances. Otherwise, it is NP-complete. In this paper, we analyze boolean CSPs in terms of their topological complexity, instead of their computational complexity. We attach a natural topological space to the set of solutions of a boolean CSP and introduce the notion of projection-universality. We prove that a boolean CSP is projection-universal if and only if it is categorized as NP-complete by Schaefer's dichotomy theorem, showing that the dichotomy translates exactly from computational to topological complexity. We show a similar dichotomy for SAT variants and homotopy-universality.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a perfectoid field with pseudo-uniformizer $\pi$. We adapt an argument of Du in \cite{DuUncountable} to show that the perfectoid Tate algebra $K\langle x^{1 / p^{\infty}} \rangle$ has an uncountable chain of distinct prime ideals. First, we conceptualize Du's argument, defining the notion of a \textit{Newton polygon formalism} on a ring. We prove a version of Du's theorem in the prescence of a sufficiently nondiscrete Newton polygon formalism. Then, we apply our framework to the perfectoid Tate algebra via a "nonstandard" Newton polygon formalism (roughly, the roles of the series variable $x$ and the pseudo-uniformizer $\pi$ are switched). We conclude a similar statement for multivatiate perfectoid Tate algebras using the one-variable case.

Abstract:Let $(G_n)_{n \geq 1} = ((V_n,E_n))_{n \geq 1}$ be a sequence of finite, connected, vertex-transitive graphs with volume tending to infinity. We say that a sequence of parameters $(p_n)_{n \geq 1}$ in $[0,1]$ is supercritical with respect to Bernoulli bond percolation $\mathbb P_p^G$ if there exists $\varepsilon >0$ and $N<\infty$ such that \[ \mathbb P_{(1-\varepsilon)p_n}^{G_n} \left( \text{the largest cluster contains at least $\varepsilon |V_n|$ vertices}\right) \geq \varepsilon \] for every $n\geq N$ with $p_n <1$. We prove that if $(G_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is sparse, meaning that the degrees are sublinear in the number of vertices, then the supercritical giant cluster is unique with high probability in the sense that if $(p_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is supercritical then \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}\mathbb P_{p_n}^{G_n} \left( \text{the second largest cluster contains at least $c|V_n|$ vertices} \right) = 0 \] for every $c>0$. This result is new even under the stronger hypothesis that $(G_n)_{n \geq 1}$ has uniformly bounded vertex degrees, in which case it verifies a conjecture of Benjamini (2001). Previous work of many authors had established the same theorem for complete graphs, tori, hypercubes, and bounded degree expander graphs, each using methods that are highly specific to the examples they treated. We also give a complete solution to the problem of supercritical uniqueness for dense vertex-transitive graphs, establishing a simple necessary and sufficient isoperimetric condition for uniqueness to hold.

Abstract:The Small-Set Expansion Hypothesis (Raghavendra, Steurer, STOC 2010) is a natural hardness assumption concerning the problem of approximating the edge expansion of small sets in graphs. This hardness assumption is closely connected to the Unique Games Conjecture (Khot, STOC 2002). In particular, the Small-Set Expansion Hypothesis implies the Unique Games Conjecture (Raghavendra, Steurer, STOC 2010). Our main result is that the Small-Set Expansion Hypothesis is in fact equivalent to a variant of the Unique Games Conjecture. More precisely, the hypothesis is equivalent to the Unique Games Conjecture restricted to instance with a fairly mild condition on the expansion of small sets. Alongside, we obtain the first strong hardness of approximation results for the Balanced Separator and Minimum Linear Arrangement problems. Before, no such hardness was known for these problems even assuming the Unique Games Conjecture. These results not only establish the Small-Set Expansion Hypothesis as a natural unifying hypothesis that implies the Unique Games Conjecture, all its consequences and, in addition, hardness results for other problems like Balanced Separator and Minimum Linear Arrangement, but our results also show that the Small-Set Expansion Hypothesis problem lies at the combinatorial heart of the Unique Games Conjecture. The key technical ingredient is a new way of exploiting the structure of the Unique Games instances obtained from the Small-Set Expansion Hypothesis via (Raghavendra, Steurer, 2010). This additional structure allows us to modify standard reductions in a way that essentially destroys their local-gadget nature. Using this modification, we can argue about the expansion in the graphs produced by the reduction without relying on expansion properties of the underlying Unique Games instance (which would be impossible for a local-gadget reduction).

Abstract:Abstract We prove that the set of $n$-point configurations for which the solution to the planar Steiner problem is not unique has the Hausdorff dimension at most $2n-1$ (as a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$). Moreover, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of $n$-point configurations for which at least two locally minimal trees have the same length is also at most $2n-1$. The methods we use essentially rely upon the theory of subanalytic sets developed in [ 1]. Motivated by this approach, we develop a general setup for the similar problem of uniqueness of the Steiner tree where the Euclidean plane is replaced by an arbitrary analytic Riemannian manifold $M$. In this setup, we argue that the set of configurations possessing two locally-minimal trees of the same length either has dimension equal to $n \dim M - 1$ or has a non-empty interior. We provide an example of a two-dimensional surface for which the last alternative holds. In addition to the above-mentioned results, we study the set of $n$-point configurations for which there is a unique solution to the Steiner problem in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. We show that this set is path-connected.

A topological approach to undefinability in algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$

Abstract:For any subset $Z \subseteq \mathbb{Q}$, consider the set $S_Z$ of subfields $L\subseteq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ which contain a co-infinite subset $C \subseteq L$ that is universally definable in $L$ such that $C \cap \mathbb{Q}=Z$. Placing a natural topology on the set $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ of subfields of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, we show that if $Z$ is not thin in $\mathbb{Q}$, then $S_Z$ is meager in $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$. Here, thin and meager both mean "small", in terms of arithmetic geometry and topology, respectively. For example, this implies that only a meager set of fields $L$ have the property that the ring of algebraic integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ is universally definable in $L$. The main tools are Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem and a new normal form theorem for existential definitions. The normal form theorem, which may be of independent interest, says roughly that every $\exists$-definable subset of an algebraic extension of $\mathbb Q$ is a finite union of single points and projections of hypersurfaces defined by absolutely irreducible polynomials.

Abstract:This paper concerns the characteristic-$p$ fibers of $\mathsf{GU}(q-2,2)$ Shimura varieties, which classify abelian varieties with additional structure. These Shimura varieties admit two stratifications of interest: the Ekedahl-Oort stratification, based on the isomorphism class of the $p$-torsion subgroup scheme, and the Newton stratification, based on the isogeny class of the $p$-divisible group. It is natural to ask which Ekedahl-Oort strata intersect the unique closed Newton stratum, called the supersingular locus. In this paper, we present several novel techniques that give information about the interaction between the two stratifications for general signature $(q-2,2)$, and as an application, we completely answer this question for the signature $(3,2)$.
