Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Separation of horocycle orbits on moduli space in genus 2

Abstract:We prove a quantitative closing lemma for the horocycle flow induced by the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-action on the moduli space of Abelian differentials with a double-order zero on surfaces of genus 2. The proof proceeds via construction of a Margulis function measuring the discretized fractal dimension of separation of a horocycle orbit of a point from itself, in a direction transverse to the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit. From this, we deduce that small transversal separation guarantees the existence of a nearby point with a pseudo-Anosov in its Veech group. This is reminiscent of the initial dimension phases in Bourgain-Gamburd for random walks on compact groups, Bourgain-Lindenstrauss-Furman-Mozes for quantitative equidistribution in tori, and quantitative equidistribution of horocycle flow for a product of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ with itself due to Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi-Wang, and multiple other works.

Abstract:For mixing~$\mathbb Z^d$-actions generated by commuting automorphisms of a compact abelian group, we investigate the directional uniformity of the rate of periodic point distribution and mixing. When each of these automorphisms has finite entropy, it is shown that directional mixing and directional convergence of the uniform measure supported on periodic points to Haar measure occurs at a uniform rate independent of the direction.

Asymptotics of integral points, equivariant compactifications and equidistributions for homogeneous spaces

Abstract:Let U be a homogeneous variety over rational numbers of some linear algebraic group. Fix an integral model and assume the existence of infinitely many integral points. Then one would like to give an asymptotic count with the help of some height function. In many cases, with the help of measure rigidity of unipotent flows, we reduce this problem to one on equivariant birational geometry. For instance, we show that if G and H are both connected, semisimple, simply connected and without compact factors, then U=G/H is strongly Hardy-Littlewood with respect to certain height function. We also show that when H is "large" in H and both G and H are connected, reductive and without non-trivial Q-characters, then for every equivariant height, the asymptotic of integral points is the same as the volume asymptotic up to a constant. Three concrete examples with explicit heights are also provided to illustrate our approach.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a complex Hénon map and $\mu$ its unique measure of maximal entropy. We prove that $\mu$ is exponentially mixing of all orders for all (not necessarily bounded) plurisubharmonic observables, and that all plurisubharmonic functions satisfy the central limit theorem with respect to $\mu$. Our results hold more generally for every Hénon-Sibony map on $\mathbb{C}^k$.

Abstract:We consider Abelian covers of compact hyperbolic surfaces. We establish an asymptotic expansion of the correlations for the horocycle flow on Z d -covers, thus proving a strong form of Krickeberg mixing. We also prove that the spectral measures around 0 of the Casimir operators on any increasing sequence of finite Abelian covers converge weakly to an absolutely continuous measure.

Abstract:We prove an equidistribution result about Hecke orbits on the Picard group of Shimura curves coming from definite quaternion algebras over function fields. In particular, we show the equidistribution of Hecke orbits of supersingular Drinfeld modules of rank 2. Our approach is via the automorphic method, using bounds for coefficients of cuspidal automorphic forms of Drinfeld type as the main tool.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group and $P<G$ be a minimal parabolic subgroup with Langlands decomposition $P=MAN$. Let $\Gamma < G$ be a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup with respect to $P$. Since $\Gamma$ is Anosov, the set of conjugacy classes of primitive elements of $\Gamma$ is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of (positively oriented) maximal flat cylinders in $\Gamma\backslash G/M$. We describe the joint equidistribution of maximal flat cylinders and their holonomies as their circumferences tend to infinity. This result can be viewed as the Anosov analogue of the joint equidistribution result of closed geodesics and holonomies in rank one by Margulis--Mohammadi--Oh.

Weak mixing and sparse equidistribution

Abstract:The celebrated Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem asserts that, for an ergodic map, orbits of almost every point equidistributes when sampled at integer times. This result was generalized by Bourgain to many natural sparse subsets of the integers. On the other hand, the behaviour of orbits of \textbf{all} points in a dynamical system is much less understood, especially for sparse subsets of the integers. We generalize a method introduced by A. Venkatesh to tackle this problem in two directions, general $\mathbb{R}^d$ actions instead of flows, and weak mixing, rather than mixing, actions. Along the way, we also establish some basic properties of weak mixing and show weak mixing for the time 1-map of a weak mixing flow. The main examples are equidistribution along $\{(n^{1+\epsilon_i})_{i=1}^d\}$, which is a direct generalisation of Venkatesh's example, and equidistribution along random subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for horosperical action.

Abstract:This note contains a new proof of Host's equidistribution theorem for multiplicatively independent endomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$. The method is a simplified version of our upcoming work on equidistribution under toral automorphisms and is related to the argument in [HochmanShmerkin2015], but avoids the use of the scenery flow and of Marstrand's projection theorem, using instead a direct Fourier argument to establish smoothness of the limit measure.

Uniform exponential mixing for congruence covers of convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Zariski dense convex cocompact subgroup contained in an arithmetic lattice of $\operatorname{SO}(n, 1)^{\circ}$. We prove uniform exponential mixing of the geodesic flow for congruence covers of the hyperbolic manifold $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H}^n$ avoiding finitely many prime ideals. This extends the work of Oh-Winter who proved the result for the $n = 2$ case. Following their approach, we use Dolgopyat's method for the proof of exponential mixing of the geodesic flow. We do this uniformly over congruence covers by establishing uniform spectral bounds for the congruence transfer operators associated to the geodesic flow. This requires another key ingredient which is the expander machinery due to Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak extended by Golsefidy-Varjú.

The geometry of the unipotent component of the moduli space of Weil-Deligne representations

Abstract:In this paper, we study the moduli space of unipotent Weil-Deligne representations and characterise which irreducible components are smooth. We also study a certain class of unions of irreducible components, and prove that they are Cohen-Macaulay at points $(\Phi, N)$ with $\Phi$ regular semisimple. We apply the smoothness results proved earlier to show that a certain space of ordinary automorphic forms is a locally generically free module over the corresponding global deformation ring.

Abstract:Let f traverse a sequence of classical holomorphic newforms of fixed weight and increasing squarefree level q tending to infinity. We prove that the pushforward of the mass of f to the modular curve of level 1 equidistributes with respect to the Poincaré measure. Our result answers affirmatively the squarefree level case of a conjecture spelled out by Kowalski, Michel and Vanderkam (2002) in the spirit of a conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). Our proof follows the strategy of Holowinsky and Soundararajan (2008) who show that newforms of level 1 and large weight have equidistributed mass. The new ingredients required to treat forms of fixed weight and large level are an adaptation of Holowinsky's reduction of the problem to one of bounding shifted sums of Fourier coefficients (which on the surface makes sense only in the large weight limit), an evaluation of the p-adic integral needed to extend Watson's formula to the case of three newforms where the level of one divides but need not equal the common squarefree level of the other two, and some additional technical work in the problematic case that the level has many small prime factors.

Abstract:Motivated by work of Dolgopyat and Nándori, we establish a general method for upgrading limit theorems for Birkhoff sums and cocycles over dynamical systems to mixing limit theorems under mild ergodicity and hyperbolicity assumptions. Building on previous work of Al-Saqban and Forni, we apply this method to obtain mixing limit theorems for particular subbundles of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. In forthcoming work of Arana-Herrera and Honaryar these results are applied to study the arithmetic/homological complexity of long simple closed geodesics on negatively curved surfaces.

Abstract:We show that if the density of the absolutely continuous part of a copula is bounded away from zero on a set of Lebesgue measure 1, then that copula generates \textquotedblleft lower $\psi$-mixing\textquotedblright\ stationary Markov chains. This conclusion implies $\phi$-mixing, $\rho$-mixing, $\beta$-mixing and \textquotedblleft interlaced $\rho$-mixing\textquotedblright . We also provide some new results on the mixing structure of Markov chains generated by mixtures of copulas.

Abstract:We consider continuous-time quantum walks on distance-regular graphs of small diameter. Using results about the existence of complex Hadamard matrices in association schemes, we determine which of these graphs have quantum walks that admit uniform mixing. First we apply a result due to Chan to show that the only strongly regular graphs that admit instantaneous uniform mixing are the Paley graph of order nine and certain graphs corresponding to regular symmetric Hadamard matrices with constant diagonal. Next we prove that if uniform mixing occurs on a bipartite graph X with n vertices, then n is divisible by four. We also prove that if X is bipartite and regular, then n is the sum of two integer squares. Our work on bipartite graphs implies that uniform mixing does not occur on C_{2m} for m >= 3. Using a result of Haagerup, we show that uniform mixing does not occur on C_p for any prime p such that p >= 5. In contrast to this result, we see that epsilon-uniform mixing occurs on C_p for all primes p.

Zero-sum multisets mod p with an application to surface automorphisms

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$
