Abstract:We introduce the notions of static regular of type (I) and type (II) and show that they are sufficient conditions for local well-posedness of solving asymptotically flat, static vacuum metrics with prescribed Bartnik boundary data. We then show that hypersurfaces in a very general open and dense family of hypersurfaces are static regular of type (II). As applications, we confirm Bartnik's static vacuum extension conjecture for a large class of Bartnik boundary data, including those that can be far from Euclidean and have large ADM masses, and give many new examples of static vacuum metrics with intriguing geometry.

Abstract:We establish the local well-posedness of the Bartnik static metric extension problem for arbitrary Bartnik data that perturb that of any sphere in a Schwarzschild $\{t=0\}$ slice. Our result in particular includes spheres with arbitrary small mean curvature. We introduce a new framework to this extension problem by formulating the governing equations in a geodesic gauge, which reduce to a coupled system of elliptic and transport equations. Since standard function spaces for elliptic PDEs are unsuitable for transport equations, we use certain spaces of Bochner-measurable functions traditionally used to study evolution equations. In the process, we establish existence and uniqueness results for elliptic boundary value problems in such spaces in which the elliptic equations are treated as evolutionary equations, and solvability is demonstrated using rigorous energy estimates. The precise nature of the expected difficulty of solving the Bartnik extension problem when the mean curvature is very small is identified and suitably treated in our analysis.

Abstract:We construct asymptotically flat, scalar flat extensions of Bartnik data [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is a metric of positive Gauss curvature on a two-sphere [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] is a function that is either positive or identically zero on [Formula: see text], such that the mass of the extension can be made arbitrarily close to the half area radius of [Formula: see text]. In the case of [Formula: see text], the result gives an analog of a theorem of Mantoulidis and Schoen [On the Bartnik mass of apparent horizons, Class. Quantum Grav. 32(20) (2015) 205002, 16 pp.], but with extensions that have vanishing scalar curvature. In the context of initial data sets in general relativity, the result produces asymptotically flat, time-symmetric, vacuum initial data with an apparent horizon [Formula: see text], for any metric [Formula: see text] with positive Gauss curvature, such that the mass of the initial data is arbitrarily close to the optimal value in the Riemannian Penrose inequality. The method we use is the Shi–Tam type metric construction from [Positive mass theorem and the boundary behaviors of compact manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, J. Differential Geom. 62(1) (2002) 79–125] and a refined Shi–Tam monotonicity, found by the first named author in [On a localized Riemannian Penrose inequality, Commun. Math. Phys. 292(1) (2009) 271–284].
Uniqueness of the static vacuum asymptotically flat spacetimes with massive particle spheres

Abstract:In this paper, we establish that a four-dimensional static vacuum asymptotically flat spacetime containing a massive particle sphere is isometric to the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our results expand upon existing uniqueness theorems for static vacuum asymptotically flat spacetimes, which focus on scenarios featuring event horizons or photon spheres. Similarly to the uniqueness theorems concerning photon spheres or event horizons, only a single massive particle sphere is sufficient to obtain a unique solution. However, in contrast to previous theorems, our result leads to the existence of an entire spacetime foliation sliced by a set of massive particle spheres spanning various energies.

Abstract:We prove that any analytic vacuum spacetime with a positive cosmological constant in four and higher dimensions, that contains a static extremal Killing horizon with a maximally symmetric compact cross-section, must be locally isometric to either the extremal Schwarzschild de Sitter solution or its near-horizon geometry (the Nariai solution). In four-dimensions, this implies these solutions are the only analytic vacuum spacetimes that contain a static extremal horizon with compact cross-sections (up to identifications). We also consider the analogous uniqueness problem for the four-dimensional extremal hyperbolic Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter solution and show that it reduces to a spectral problem for the laplacian on compact hyperbolic surfaces, if a cohomological obstruction to the uniqueness of infinitesimal transverse deformations of the horizon is absent.

Abstract:Unique features of particle orbits produce novel signatures of gravitational observable phenomena, and are quite useful in testing compact astrophysical objects in general relativity or modified theories of gravity. Here we observe a representative example that a static, spherically symmetric black hole solution with nonlinear electrodynamics admits static points at finite radial distance. Each static point thus produces a static sphere, on which a massive test particle can remain at rest at arbitrary latitudes with respect to an asymptotic static observer. As a result, the well-known static Dyson spheres can be implemented by such orbits. More interestingly, employing a topological argument, we disclose that stable and unstable static spheres (if they exist) always come in pairs in an asymptotically flat spacetime. In contrast to this, the counterpart naked singularity has one more stable static sphere than the unstable one. Our results have potential applications in testing black holes in standard Maxwell and nonlinear electrodynamics, as well as in uncovering the underlying astronomical observation effects in other gravitational theories beyond general relativity.

Abstract:Given on the $2$-sphere Bartnik data (prescribed metric and mean curvature) that is a small perturbation of the corresponding data for the standard unit sphere in Euclidean space, we estimate to second order, in the size of the perturbation, the mass of the asymptotically flat static vacuum extension (unique up to diffeomorphism) which is a small perturbation of the flat metric on the exterior of the unit ball in Euclidean space and induces the prescribed data on the boundary sphere. As an application we obtain a new upper bound on the Bartnik mass of small metric spheres to fifth order in the radius.

Abstract:We prove that equality in the Minkowski inequality for asymptotically flat static manifolds is achieved only by slices of Schwarzschild space. To show this, we establish uniqueness of *quasi-spherical* static metrics: rotationally symmetric regions of Schwarzschild are the only static vacuum metrics which are quasi-spherical with vanishing shear vector. In addition, we observe that the static Minkowski inequality extends to all dimensions for a connected boundary and to asymptotically flat static manifolds of any positive decay order. Altogether, this yields a robust rigidity criterion for Schwarzschild space. Using this criterion, we recover Israel's static black hole uniqueness theorem under this mild decay assumption. Likewise, the uniqueness theorems for photon surfaces and static metric extensions from the prequel extend to all dimensions under these weaker asymptotics. Finally, as a notable by-product of our analysis, we establish regularity of weak inverse mean curvature flow in asymptotically flat manifolds -- that is, a weak IMCF is eventually smooth in an arbitrary asymptotically flat background.

A rigidity theorem for asymptotically flat static manifolds and its applications

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Minkowski-type inequality for asymptotically flat static manifolds $(M^{n}, g)$ with boundary and with dimension $ n < 8$ that was establishedby McCormick. First, we show that any asymptotically flat static $(M^{n},g)$ which achieves the equality and has CMC or equipotential boundary is isometric to a rotationally symmetric region of the Schwarzschild manifold. Then, we apply conformal techniques to derive a new Minkowski-type inequality for the level sets of bounded static potentials. Taken together, these provide a robust approach to detecting rotational symmetry of asymptotically flat static systems. As an application, we prove global uniqueness of static metric extensions for the Bartnik data induced by both Schwarzschild coordinate spheres and Euclidean coordinate spheres in dimension $n < 8$ under the natural condition of Schwarzschild stability. This generalizes an earlier result of Miao. We also establish uniqueness for equipotential photon surfaces with small Einstein-Hilbert energy. This is interesting to compare with other recent uniqueness results for static photon surfaces and black holes.

Abstract:The bumblebee gravity model is a vector-tensor theory of gravitation where the vector field nonminimally couples to the Ricci tensor. By investigating the vacuum field equations with spherical symmetry, we find two families of black-hole (BH) solutions in this model: one has a vanishing radial component of the vector field and the other has a vanishing radial component of the Ricci tensor. When the coupling between the vector field and the Ricci tensor is set to zero, the first family becomes the Reissner-Nordstrom solution while the second family degenerates to the Schwarzschild solution with the vector field being zero. General numerical solutions in both families are obtained for nonzero coupling between the vector field and the Ricci tensor. Besides BH solutions, we also reveal the existence of solutions that have a nonvanishing tt-component of the metric on the supposed event horizon where the rr-component of the metric diverges while the curvature scalars are finite. These solutions are not supported by existing observations but present certain properties that are of academic interests. We conclude the study by putting the BH solutions into tests against the Solar-System observations and the images of supermassive BHs.

Abstract:We show the existence of complete, asymptotically flat Cauchy initial data for the vacuum Einstein field equations, free of trapped surfaces, whose future development must admit a trapped surface. Moreover, the datum is exactly a constant time slice in Minkowski space-time inside and exactly a constant time slice in Kerr space-time outside. The proof makes use of the full strength of Christodoulou's work on the dynamical formation of black holes and Corvino-Schoen's work on the constructions of initial data set.

Abstract:The problem of existence of spacelike hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in asymptotically flat spacetimes is considered for a class of asymptotically Schwarzschild spacetimes satisfying an interior condition. Using a barrier construction, a proof is given of the existence of complete hypersurfaces with constant mean cuvature which intersect null infinity in a regular cut.

Abstract:Within the framework of the spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking, we consider a metric--affine generalization of the gravitational sector of the Standard--Model Extension (SME), including the Lorentz--violating (LV) coefficients $u$ and $s^{\mu\nu}$. In this model, we derive the modified Einstein field equations in order to obtain a new axisymmetric vacuum spinning solution for a particular bumblebee's profile. Such a solution has the remarkable property of incorporating the effects of Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) through the LV dimensionless parameter $X=\xi b^2$, as the LSB is turned off, $X=0$, we recover the well--established result, the Kerr solution, as expected. Afterwards, we calculate the geodesics, the radial acceleration and thermodynamic quantities for this new metric. We also estimate an upper bound for $X$ by using astrophysical data of the advance Mercury's perihelion.

Abstract:We prove there is a unique vacuum solution in split-signature spacetimes with Kleinian SO(2,1) spherical symmetry. We extend our analysis to accommodate a positive or negative cosmological constant and we prove the Kleinian spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein's equation are locally isomorphic to the split-signature analogues of Schwarzschild-(Anti)-de Sitter or Nariai spacetimes. Our analysis provides a Kleinian extension of Birkhoff's theorem to metrics with split-signature. Axisymmetric vacuum solutions are also considered, including (2,2) signature formulations of the Kerr and Taub-NUT metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, we study asymptotic symmetries and algebraically special exact solutions in the Newman-Penrose formalism. Removing the hypersurface orthogonal condition in the well studied Newman-Unti gauge, we obtain a generic asymptotic solution space which includes all possible origins of propagating degree of freedom. The asymptotic symmetry of the generalized system extends the Weyl-BMS symmetry by two independent local Lorentz transformations with non-trivial boundary charges, which reveals new boundary degrees of freedom. The generalized Newman-Unti gauge includes algebraically special condition in its most convenient form. Remarkably, the generic solutions satisfying the algebraically special condition truncate in the inverse power of radial expansions and the non-radial Newman-Penrose equations are explicitly solved at any order. Hence, we provide the most general algebraically special solution space and the derivation is self-contained in the Newman-Penrose formalism. The asymptotic symmetry with respect to the algebraically special condition is the standard Weyl-BMS symmetry and the symmetry parameters consist only the integration constant order. We present the Kerr solution and Taub-NUT solution in the generalized Newman-Unti gauge in a simple form.

Existence and absence of Killing horizons in static solutions with symmetries

Abstract:Without specifying a matter field nor imposing energy conditions, we study Killing horizons in $n(\ge 3)$-dimensional static solutions in general relativity with an $(n-2)$-dimensional Einstein base manifold. Assuming linear relations $p_{\rm r}\simeq\chi_{\rm r} \rho$ and $p_2\simeq\chi_{\rm t} \rho$ near a Killing horizon between the energy density $\rho$, radial pressure $p_{\rm r}$, and tangential pressure $p_2$ of the matter field, we prove that any non-vacuum solution satisfying $\chi_{\rm r}<-1/3$ ($\chi_{\rm r}\ne -1$) or $\chi_{\rm r}>0$ does not admit a horizon as it becomes a curvature singularity. For $\chi_{\rm r}=-1$ and $\chi_{\rm r}\in[-1/3,0)$, non-vacuum solutions admit Killing horizons, on which there exists a matter field only for $\chi_{\rm r}=-1$ and $-1/3$, which are of the Hawking-Ellis type~I and type~II, respectively. Differentiability of the metric on the horizon depends on the value of $\chi_{\rm r}$, and non-analytic extensions beyond the horizon are allowed for $\chi_{\rm r}\in[-1/3,0)$. In particular, solutions can be attached to the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini-type vacuum solution at the Killing horizon in at least a $C^{1,1}$ regular manner without a lightlike thin shell. We generalize some of those results in Lovelock gravity with a maximally symmetric base manifold.

Abstract:We consider extremal black hole solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations in dimensions greater than five. We prove that the near-horizon geometry of any such black hole must possess an SO(2,1) symmetry in a special case where one has an enhanced rotational symmetry group. We construct examples of vacuum near-horizon geometries using the extremal Myers-Perry black holes and boosted Myers-Perry strings. The latter lead to near-horizon geometries of black ring topology, which in odd spacetime dimensions have the correct number rotational symmetries to describe an asymptotically flat black object. We argue that a subset of these correspond to the near-horizon limit of asymptotically flat extremal black rings. Using this identification we provide a conjecture for the exact ``phase diagram'' of extremal vacuum black rings with a connected horizon in odd spacetime dimensions greater than five.
