Abstract:We consider the interaction of a compressible fluid with a flexible plate in two space dimensions. The fluid is described by the Navier--Stokes equations in a domain that is changing in accordance with the motion of the structure. The displacement of the latter evolves according to a beam equation. Both are coupled through kinematic boundary conditions and the balance of forces. We prove that for any weak solution to the coupled system, which satisfies certain additional regularity requirements, no contact occurs between the elastic wall and the bottom of the fluid cavity. This applies to both isentropic and heat-conducting fluids. As a special case of our general theory we extend the unconditional result from Grandmont and Hillairet (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 220, 1283--1333, 2016) on incompressible fluids from visco-elastic to perfectly elastic plates.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of whether the elastic wall may contact the bottom of the fluid cavity when the compressible fluid and the elastic plate interact in two - dimensional space. Specifically, the author studied the situation where no contact occurs between the elastic wall and the bottom of the fluid cavity under the weak solution satisfying certain regularity conditions. This problem is crucial for understanding the long - term behavior of fluid - structure interactions, especially when considering that the fluid may have heat - conducting properties or be an isentropic fluid.
The key contribution of the paper is to prove a conditional non - contact theorem, that is, if the weak solution of the system satisfies specific regularity requirements, no contact will occur within a finite time. This applies not only to isentropic fluids but also to heat - conducting fluids. In addition, as a special case of the general theory, the author also extended the unconditional results of Grandmont and Hillairet on the interaction between incompressible fluids and viscoelastic plates to fully elastic plates.
Specifically, the main theorem (Theorem 1.1) in the paper shows that if the weak solution \((\eta, \rho, u)\) satisfies the following conditions:
\[ \partial_t(\rho u), \text{div}(\rho u \otimes u) \in L^1(0, T; L^q(\Omega_\eta)), \quad \text{div} u \in L^1(0, T; L^\infty(\Omega_\eta)), \]
\[ \eta \in W^{1,2}(0, T; W^{1,2}_\sharp(0, L)) \cap L^\infty(0, T; W^{3,2}_\sharp(0, L)), \]
where \( q > \frac{8}{5} \), then no contact will occur between the elastic wall and the bottom of the fluid cavity when \( t < T \).
The proof of this result is based on a specific stream function construction, which depends on the flat reference geometry of the one - dimensional elastic plate. This construction method is applicable not only to incompressible fluids but also to compressible fluids and is independent of pressure. Therefore, the results of the paper also apply to heat - conducting fluids and are independent of temperature.
