Abstract:This work considers an uplink asynchronous massive random access scenario in which a large number of users asynchronously access a base station equipped with multiple receive antennas. The objective is to alleviate the problem of massive collision due to the limited number of orthogonal preambles of an access scheme in which user activity detection is performed. We propose a user activity detection with delay-calibration (UAD-DC) algorithm and investigate the benefits of oversampling for the estimation of continuous time delays at the receiver. The proposed algorithm iteratively estimates time delays and detects active users by noting that the collided users can be identified through accurate estimation of time delays. Due to the sporadic user activity patterns, the user activity detection problem can be formulated as a compressive sensing (CS) problem, which can be solved by a modified Turbo-CS algorithm under the consideration of correlated noise samples resulting from oversampling. A sliding-window technique is applied in the proposed algorithm to reduce the overall computational complexity. Moreover, we propose a new design of the pulse shaping filter by minimizing the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound of the detection problem under the constraint of limited spectral bandwidth. Numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in terms of the normalized mean squared error of the estimated channel, the probability of misdetection and the successful detection ratio.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to solve the large - scale collision problem caused by the limited number of preamble sequences when a large number of users asynchronously access the base station through shared preamble sequences in the asynchronous massive random access scenario. Specifically, the paper mainly focuses on the following two key challenges: 1. **Large - scale collision problem**: Due to the limited number of orthogonal preamble sequences, in the asynchronous massive random access scenario, multiple active users may select the same preamble sequence, resulting in a serious collision problem. The traditional cross - correlation method cannot accurately detect the active users with collisions in this case, leading to a high false detection rate. 2. **Time - delay estimation problem**: Since the activity patterns of users are intermittent and the signal arrival times at the base station are different for different devices, it is necessary to accurately estimate the time delay of each active user so that the subsequent data transmission phase can proceed smoothly. To solve these problems, the paper proposes a User Activity Detection with Delay - Calibration (UAD - DC) algorithm and studies the influence of oversampling on continuous time - delay estimation. This algorithm solves the user activity detection problem by iteratively estimating the time delay and detecting active users, using Compressive Sensing (CS) technology. In addition, the paper also proposes a new pulse - shaping filter design method to minimize the Bayesian Cramér - Rao Bound (BCRB) and thus improve the detection performance. ### Main contributions 1. **System model establishment**: A sliding - window - based uplink asynchronous massive random access system model is proposed, in which the receiving end adopts oversampling technology to avoid information loss caused by user asynchrony. 2. **UAD - DC algorithm**: A user activity detection method based on Expectation - Maximization (EM) is developed to detect active users through delay - calibration. In the E - step of EM, this method uses the modified Turbo - CS algorithm to deal with the colored noise caused by oversampling, and in the M - step, a novel delay - calibration method is proposed. 3. **Pulse - shaping filter optimization**: To improve the user activity detection performance, a new pulse - shaping filter design method is proposed to optimize the filter parameters by minimizing BCRB. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm performs well in terms of false detection probability and Normalized Mean Squared Error (NMSE) of the channel matrix. Compared with the traditional cross - correlation - based random access method, the number of successfully detected active users can be increased by up to 38.90%. ### Summary This paper proposes an efficient solution to the user collision and time - delay estimation problems in the asynchronous massive random access scenario. By introducing delay - calibration and oversampling techniques, it significantly improves the accuracy and efficiency of user activity detection.
