Abstract:For a given graph $G$, we aim to determine the possible realizable spectra for a generalized (or sometimes referred to as a weighted) Laplacian matrix associated with $G$. This specialized inverse eigenvalue problem is considered for certain families of graphs and graphs on a small number of vertices. Related considerations include studying the possible ordered multiplicity lists associated with stars and complete graphs and graphs with a few vertices. Finally, we investigate the both theoretically and numerically, the minimum variance over a family of generalized Laplacian matrices with a size-normalized weighting.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the inverse eigenvalue problem (IEP) of the generalized Laplacian matrix (or weighted Laplacian matrix) for a given graph \(G\). Specifically, the researchers aim to determine the possible eigenvalue spectra that can be achieved by the associated generalized Laplacian matrix for a given graph \(G\). This problem pays special attention to certain specific types of graphs (such as star graphs, complete graphs, and graphs with a small number of vertices).
### Main Research Contents
1. **Definition of the Inverse Eigenvalue Problem**:
- For a given graph \(G\), let \(S(G)\) be the set of all \(n\times n\) real symmetric matrices \(A\), where \(a_{ij}\neq0\) if and only if \(\{i, j\}\in E(G)\), \(a_{ij} = 0\) when \(\{i, j\}\notin E(G)\) and \(i\neq j\), and \(a_{ii}\in\mathbb{R}\).
- The goal of the inverse eigenvalue problem (IEP - G) is to determine all possible eigenvalue spectra in \(S(G)\).
2. **Generalized Laplacian Matrix**:
- Define \(SL(G)\) as the set of all \(n\times n\) real symmetric matrices \(A\), where \(a_{ij}<0\) when \(\{i, j\}\in E(G)\), \(a_{ij} = 0\) when \(\{i, j\}\notin E(G)\) and \(i\neq j\), and \(a_{ii}=-\sum_{k: k\sim i}a_{ik}\).
- The researchers pay special attention to the possible eigenvalue spectra of matrices in \(SL(G)\).
3. **Eigenvalue Spectra of Specific Graphs**:
- **Star Graph**: The possible eigenvalue spectra of the star graph \(K_{1,n - 1}\) are studied, and the conditions for achieving these eigenvalue spectra are given.
- **Complete Graph**: It is proved that for the complete graph \(K_{n}\), any set of positive real numbers \(\{0,\lambda_{2},\ldots,\lambda_{n}\}\) can be used as the eigenvalue spectrum of a certain generalized Laplacian matrix.
- **Graphs with a Small Number of Vertices**: The eigenvalue spectra and their ordered multiplicity lists of graphs with a small number of vertices (such as path graphs \(P_{3}\) and \(P_{4}\)) are studied.
4. **Minimum Variance Problem**:
- The minimum variance problem of the eigenvalue spectra of the generalized Laplacian matrix under normalized weights is studied, and the connection with the quadratic programming problem is explored.
### Key Conclusions
- **Star Graph**: For the star graph \(K_{1,n - 1}\), the necessary and sufficient conditions for the realization of the eigenvalue spectrum are given.
- **Complete Graph**: It is proved that the complete graph \(K_{n}\) can realize any set of positive real numbers as the eigenvalue spectrum.
- **Graphs with a Small Number of Vertices**: The eigenvalue spectra and their ordered multiplicity lists of the path graph \(P_{4}\) and other graphs with a small number of vertices are analyzed in detail.
- **Minimum Variance**: The minimum variance problem of the eigenvalue spectra of the generalized Laplacian matrix is explored, and a connection with the quadratic programming problem is established.
Through these studies, the paper provides profound insights into the relationship between the structure of a graph and the eigenvalue spectra of its corresponding generalized Laplacian matrix.
