Abstract:In this article, we consider the Israel-Stewart equations of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics with bulk viscosity. We investigate the evolution of the equations linearized about solutions that satisfy the physical vacuum boundary condition and establish local well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem.

Abstract:We consider equations of Müller-Israel-Stewart type describing a relativistic viscous fluid with bulk viscosity in four-dimensional Minkowski space. We show that there exists a class of smooth initial data that are localized perturbations of constant states for which the corresponding unique solutions to the Cauchy problem break down in finite time. Specifically, we prove that in finite time such solutions develop a singularity or become unphysical in a sense that we make precise. We also show that in general Riemann invariants do not exist in 1+1 dimensions for physically relevant equations of state and viscosity coefficients. Finally, we present a more general version of a result by Y. Guo and A.S. Tahvildar-Zadeh: we prove large-data singularity formation results for perfect fluids under very general assumptions on the equation of state, allowing any value for the fluid sound speed strictly less than the speed of light.

Abstract:Viscous corrections to relativistic hydrodynamics, which are usually formulated for small velocity gradients, have recently been extended from Navier-Stokes formulations to a class of treatments based on Israel-Stewart equations. Israel-Stewart treatments, which treat the spatial components of the stress-energy tensor τij as dynamical objects, introduce new parameters, such as the relaxation times describing nonequilibrium behavior of the elements τij. By considering linear response theory and entropy constraints, we show how the additional parameters are related to fluctuations of τij. Furthermore, the Israel-Stewart parameters are analyzed for their ability to provide stable and physical solutions for sound waves. Finally, it is shown how these parameters, which are naturally described by correlation functions in real time, might be constrained by lattice calculations, which are based on path-integral formulations in imaginary time.

Abstract:The approach of extended irreversible thermodynamics consists of promoting the dissipative fluxes to non-equilibrium thermodynamic variables. In a relativistic context, this naturally leads to the formulation of the theory of Israel and Stewart (1979), which is, to date, one of the most successful theories for relativistic dissipation. Although the generality of the principle makes it applicable to any dissipative fluid, a connection of the Israel-Stewart theory with microphysics has been established, through kinetic theory, only for the case of ideal quantum gases. By performing a convenient change of variables, we provide, for the case of bulk viscosity, an equivalent reformulation of the equations at the basis of extended irreversible thermodynamics. This approach maps any thermodynamic process which contributes to the bulk viscosity into a set of chemical reactions, whose reaction coordinates are abstract parameters describing the displacement from local thermodynamic equilibrium of the fluid element. We apply our new formalism to the case of the relativistic fluids, showing that the Israel-Stewart model for bulk viscosity is just the second-order expansion of a minimal model belonging to a larger class of non-perturbative theories for bulk viscosity which include the nuclear-reaction-mediated bulk viscosity of neutron star matter as a particular case. Furthermore, we show with concrete examples that our formalism provides new ways of computing the bulk viscosity directly and defines a simple prescription for constructing the Israel-Stewart model for a generic bulk-viscous fluid.

Abstract:We consider the local well-posedness of the one-dimensional nonisentropic Euler equations with moving physical vacuum boundary condition. The physical vacuum singularity requires the sound speed to be scaled as the square root of the distance to the vacuum boundary. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the system of hyperbolic conservation laws becomes characteristic and degenerate at the vacuum boundary. Our proof is based on an approximation of the Euler equations by a degenerate parabolic regularization obtained from a specific choice of a degenerate artificial viscosity term. Then we construct the solutions to this degenerate parabolic problem and establish the estimates that are uniform with respect to the artificial viscosity parameter. Solutions to the compressible Euler equations are obtained as the limit of the vanishing artificial viscosity. Different from the isentropic case \cite{Coutand4, Lei}, our momentum equation of conservation laws has an extra term $p_{S}S_x$ that leads to some extra terms in the energy function and causes more difficulties even for the case of $\gamma=2$. Moreover, we deal with this free boundary problem starting from the general cases of $2\leq\gamma<3$ and $1<\gamma<2 $ instead of only emphasizing the isentropic case of $\gamma=2$ in \cite{Coutand4, jang1, Lei}.
Analytical solutions and asymptotic behaviors to the vacuum free boundary problem for 2D Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity

Abstract:In this paper, we constructed a new class of analytical solutions to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with vacuum free boundary in polar coordinates. These rotational solutions captured the physical vacuum phenomenon that the sound speed was $ C^{1/2} $-Hölder continuous across the boundary, and they provided some new information on our understanding of ocean vortices and reference examples for simulations of computing flows. It was shown that both radial and angular velocity components and their derivatives will tend to zero as $ t\rightarrow +\infty $ and the free boundary will grow linearly in time, which happens to be consistent with the linear growth properties of inviscid fluids. The large time behavior of the free boundary $ r = a(t) $ was completely determined by a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) with parameters of rotational strength $ \xi $, adiabatic exponent $ \gamma $, and viscosity coefficients. We tracked the profile and large time behavior of $ a(t) $ by exploring the intrinsic structure of the ODE and the contradiction argument, instead of introducing some physical quantities, such as the total mass, the momentum weight and the total energy, etc., which are usually used in the previous literature. In particular, these results can be applied to the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity and the Euler equations.

Abstract:Israel-Stewart theory is a causal, stable formulation of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics. This theory has been shown to give a decent description of the dynamical behavior of a relativistic fluid in cases where shear stress becomes important. In principle, it should also be applicable to situations where heat flow becomes important. However, it has been shown that there are cases where Israel-Stewart theory cannot reproduce phenomena associated with heat flow. In this paper, we derive a relativistic dissipative fluid-dynamical theory from kinetic theory which provides a good description of all dissipative phenomena, including heat flow. We explicitly demonstrate this by comparing this theory with numerical solutions of the relativistic Boltzmann equation.
The relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary: Hadamard local well-posedness, rough solutions, and continuation criterion

Abstract:In this paper we provide a complete local well-posedness theory for the free boundary relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary on a Minkowski background. Specifically, we establish the following results: (i) local well-posedness in the Hadamard sense, i.e., local existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on the data; (ii) low regularity solutions: our uniqueness result holds at the level of Lipschitz velocity and density, while our rough solutions, obtained as unique limits of smooth solutions, have regularity only a half derivative above scaling; (iii) stability: our uniqueness in fact follows from a more general result, namely, we show that a certain nonlinear functional that tracks the distance between two solutions (in part by measuring the distance between their respective boundaries) is propagated by the flow; (iv) we establish sharp, essentially scale invariant energy estimates for solutions; (v) a sharp continuation criterion, at the level of scaling, showing that solutions can be continued as long as the the velocity is in $L^1_t Lip$ and a suitable weighted version of the density is at the same regularity level. Our entire approach is in Eulerian coordinates and relies on the functional framework developed in the companion work of the second and third authors corresponding to the non relativistic problem. All our results are valid for a general equation of state $p(\varrho)= \varrho^\gamma$, $\gamma > 1$.

Abstract:We investigate the initial value problem of a very general class of $3+1$ non-Newtonian compressible fluids in which the viscous stress tensor with shear and bulk viscosity relaxes to its Navier-Stokes values. These fluids correspond to the non-relativistic limit of well-known Israel-Stewart-like theories used in the relativistic fluid dynamic simulations of high-energy nuclear and astrophysical systems. After establishing the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, we show for the first time in the literature that there exists a large class of initial data for which the corresponding evolution breaks down in finite time due to the formation of singularities. This implies that a large class of non-Newtonian fluids do not have finite solutions defined at all times.

On the vacuum free boundary problem of the viscous Saint-Venant system for shallow water in two dimensions

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the local-in-time well-posedness of classical solutions to the vacuum free boundary problem of the viscous Saint-Venant system for shallow water in two dimensions. The solutions are shown to possess higher-order regularities uniformly up to the vacuum free boundary, although the depth degenerates as a singularity of the distance to the vacuum boundary. Since the momentum equations degenerate in both the dissipation and time evolution, there are difficulties in constructing approximate solutions by the Galerkin's scheme and gaining higher-order regularities uniformly up to the vacuum boundary for the weak solution. To construct the approximate solutions, we introduce some degenerate-singular elliptic operator, whose eigenfunctions form an orthogonal basis of the projection space. Then the high-order regularities on the weak solution are obtained by using some carefully designed higher-order weighted energy functional.

Abstract:Using a formalism that was recently developed in a companion Letter, we rigorously prove the equivalence, in the linear regime, of a number of apparently different relativistic hydrodynamic theories proposed in the literature. In particular, we show that Hydro+ is indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory for bulk viscosity, which in turn is indistinguishable from a reacting mixture. The two-fluid model for superfluidity coincides with the Israel-Stewart theory for heat conduction in the limit of infinite conductivity, and this explains why the latter has a second sound. Also, MIS* is equivalent to the Burgers model for viscoelasticity, and this implies that the former must exhibit an elastic behavior at high frequencies. Additionally, we show that if the degrees of freedom and the conservation laws of a hydrodynamic theory have the same geometric character as those of the Israel-Stewart theory, then such theory must be indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory in the linear regime. This explains why all second-order theories turn out to be identical near equilibrium. Abstract:Using analytical tools from linear response theory, we systematically assess the accuracy of several microscopic derivations of Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics near local equilibrium. This allows us to "rank" the different approaches in decreasing order of accuracy as follows: inverse Reynolds dominance (IReD), Denicol-Niemi-Molnár-Rischke (DNMR), second-order gradient expansion, and 14-moment approximation. We find that IReD theory is far superior to Navier-Stokes, being very accurate both in the asymptotic regime (i.e., for slow processes) and in the transient regime (i.e., on timescales comparable to the relaxation time). Also, the high accuracy of DNMR is confirmed, but neglecting second-order terms in the Knudsen number, which would render the equations parabolic, introduces serious systematic errors. Finally, in most cases, the second-order gradient expansion (also known as nonresummed Baier-Romatschke-Son-Starinets-Stephanov) is found to be more inaccurate than Navier-Stokes in the transient regime. Overall, this analysis shows that Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics is falsifiable, and the relaxation time is observable, shedding new light on the debate on the viability of transient hydrodynamics as a well-defined physical theory distinguished from Navier-Stokes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.016019 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem, free boundary problem and piston problem for one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity. Using the reduction to absurdity method, we prove that the weak solutions to these systems do not exhibit vacuum states, provided that no vacuum states are present initially. The essential requirements on the solutions are that the mass and energy of the fluid are locally integrable at each time, and the L loc 1 -norm of the velocity gradient is locally integrable in time.
Exponential Stability of the Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes-Vlasov System in Vacuum

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviors of solutions to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes-Vlasov system in $\mathbb{R}^{3}\times\mathbb{R}^{3}$, where the initial fluid density is allowed to vanish. We establish the uniform bound of the macroscopic density associated with the distribution function and prove the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem with vacuum for either small initial energy or large viscosity coefficient. The uniform boundedness and the presence of vacuum enable us to show that as the time evolves, the fluid velocity decays, while the distribution function concentrates towards a Dirac measure in velocity centred at $0$, with an exponential rate. In order to overcome the degeneracy in the momentum equations, we develop an energy argument based on higher order functional inequalities designed for fluid-particle coupled structures.

Abstract:Explicit equations are given for describing the space-time evolution of non-ideal (viscous) relativistic fluids undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal and arbitrary transverse expansion. The equations are derived from the second-order Israel-Stewart approach which ensures causal evolution. Both azimuthally symmetric (1+1)-dimensional and non-symmetric (2+1)-dimensional transverse expansion are discussed. The latter provides the formal basis for the hydrodynamic computation of elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions including dissipative effects.

Linear stability analysis in inhomogeneous equilibrium configurations

Abstract:We propose a novel method to find local plane-wave solutions of the linearized equations of motion of relativistic hydrodynamics in inhomogeneous equilibrium configurations, i.e., when a fluid in equilibrium is rigidly moving with nonzero thermal vorticity. Our method is based on extending the conserved currents to the tangent bundle, using a type of Wigner transformation. The Wigner-transformed conserved currents can then be Fourier-transformed into the cotangent bundle to obtain the dispersion relations for the space-time dependent eigenfrequencies. We show that the connection between the stability of hydrodynamics and the evolution of plane waves is not as straightforward as in the homogeneous case, namely, it is restricted to the equilibrium-preserving directions in the cotangent bundle. We apply this method to Mueller-Israel-Stewart (MIS) theory and show that the interplay between the bulk viscous pressure and the shear-stress tensor with acceleration and rotation leads to novel modes, as well as modifications of the already known ones. We conclude that, within the domain of applicability, i.e., when boundary effects are negligible and the vorticity is not too large, MIS theory is stable and causal, with the same stability and causality conditions as for homogeneous equilibrium configurations.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness of the free boundary problem of full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with physical vacuum in three dimensions. We establish a priori estimates in Conormal Sobolev spaces in Lagrangian coordinates, where only the first-order time-derivative of the velocity is involved in the compatibility condition. The existence and uniqueness results of local-in-time solutions are based on a fixed point argument. Different from the isentropic case [11], the presence of nonlinear term div(uS) in energy equation causes more difficulties. Moreover, we deal with this free boundary problem starting from the general cases of 1<γ≤2 (the most physically relevant regime), where γ is the adiabatic exponent.
