Abstract:Solutions of the wave equations for time-independent disordered media can exhibit Anderson localization where instead of wave propagation we observe their localization around different points in space. Photonic time crystals are spatially homogeneous media in which the refractive index changes periodically in time, leading to the formation of bands in the wave number domain. By analogy to Anderson localization in space, one might expect that the presence of temporal disorder in photonic time crystals would lead to Anderson localization in the time domain. Here, we show that indeed periodic modulations of the refractive index with the addition of temporal disorder lead to Anderson localization in time, where an electromagnetic field can emerge from the temporally modulated medium at a certain moment in time and then decay exponentially over time. Thus, we are dealing with a situation where, in a fluctuating three-dimensional medium, the birth and death of waves can occur, and the mechanism of this phenomenon corresponds to Anderson localization.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is whether Anderson localization occurs in photonic time crystals in the presence of temporal disorder. Specifically, the authors explore whether the electromagnetic field can become localized in time when temporal disorder is introduced into a periodically modulated refractive index. ### Main Issues: 1. **Manifestation of Anderson Localization in Time**: Typically, Anderson localization refers to the localization of waves in space, where waves become localized around certain spatial points due to interference effects when propagating through a disordered medium. This paper aims to verify whether such localization can extend to the time domain in photonic time crystals, i.e., whether the electromagnetic field can appear at a specific time point and subsequently decay exponentially over time. 2. **Impact of Temporal Disorder**: The study investigates the effect of temporal disorder on the propagation of electromagnetic waves in photonic time crystals. By introducing temporal disorder, i.e., random fluctuations in the refractive index, the authors simulate imperfections in real systems and explore how these fluctuations affect the behavior of electromagnetic waves. ### Research Methods: - **Theoretical Model**: The authors use a tight-binding model to describe the behavior of electromagnetic waves in photonic time crystals. By defining Wannier states, which are localized in time rather than space. - **Numerical Simulations**: By numerically solving Maxwell's equations, the authors verify the predictions of the tight-binding model. They demonstrate that the electromagnetic field can indeed become localized in time in the presence of temporal disorder. ### Main Findings: - **Temporal Localization**: In photonic time crystals, when temporal disorder is present, the electromagnetic field can appear at a specific time point and subsequently decay exponentially over time. This phenomenon is similar to traditional spatial Anderson localization but occurs in the time domain. - **Localization Time**: The authors define a concept analogous to the localization length in spatial Anderson localization, called "localization time," and show how the localization time varies with the wave number. ### Conclusion: Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, this paper demonstrates that temporal disorder can lead to the localization of the electromagnetic field in time in photonic time crystals. This finding not only extends the concept of Anderson localization but also provides a new perspective for understanding the impact of temporal disorder on wave propagation.
