Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to provide access to a previously unpublished and nearly lost paper: P. Hořava, "Covariant Hamilton-Jacobi Equation for Pure Gravity", which appeared originally in July 1990 as a Prague Preprint PRA-HEP-90/4, at the Institute of Physics, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, but appears otherwise unavailable online. The author has recently acquired an original copy of this preprint; the present article contains a verbatim transcript of the original 1990 paper, framed by a small number of comments. The contents of the 1990 paper was based on the results contained in the author's BSc Thesis, written in Czech, and presented at Charles University, Prague, in 1986. The original 1990 Abstract: We present an alternative framework for treating Einstein gravity in any dimension greater than two, and at any signature. It is based on a covariant Hamilton-Jacobi-De~Donder equation, which is proved to be equivalent to the Lagrange theory, on space-times of arbitrary topology. It in particular means that Einstein gravity can be thought of as a (covariantly) regular system. Finally, the Hamilton-Jacobi theory is studied, and it is shown that any solution of Einstein equations can be obtained from the action form equal identically to zero.

Abstract:The covariant canonical transformation theory applied to the relativistic Hamiltonian theory of classical matter fields in dynamical space-time yields a novel (first order) gauge field theory of gravitation. The emerging field equations necessarily embrace a quadratic Riemann term added to Einstein's linear equation. The quadratic term endows space-time with inertia generating a dynamic response of the space-time geometry to deformations relative to (Anti) de Sitter geometry. A "deformation parameter" is identified, the inverse dimensionless coupling constant governing the relative strength of the quadratic invariant in the Hamiltonian, and directly observable via the deceleration parameter $q_0$. The quadratic invariant makes the system inconsistent with Einstein's constant cosmological term, $\Lambda = \mathrm{const}$. In the Friedman model this inconsistency is resolved with the scaling ansatz of a "cosmological function", $\Lambda(a)$, where $a$ is the scale parameter of the FLRW metric. %Moreover, the strain generated by the quadratic term turns out to act as a geometrical stress. The cosmological function can be normalized such that with the $\Lambda$ CDM parameter set the present-day observables, the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter, can be reproduced. %We analyze the asymptotics of the such normalized Friedman equations with respect to both, the fundamental parameters (coupling constants) and the scale $a$. With this parameter set we recover the dark energy scenario in the late epoch. The proof that inflation in the early phase is caused by the "geometrical fluid" representing the inertia of space-time is yet pending, though.

Abstract:We review in simple terms the covariant approaches to the canonical formulation of classical relativistic field theories (in particular gauge field theories and general relativity) and we discuss the relationships between these approaches as well as the relation with the standard (non-covariant) Hamiltonian formulation. Particular attention is paid to conservation laws (notably related to geometric symmetries) within the different approaches. Moreover, for each of these approaches, the impact of space-time boundaries is also addressed. To make the text accessible to a wider audience, we have included an outline of Poisson and symplectic geometry for both classical mechanics and field theory.

Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Classical Gravitation for Scalar, Vector, and Spin-1/2 Particle Fields

Abstract:The framework of the Covariant Canonical Gauge theory of Gravity (CCGG) is described in detail. CCGG emerges naturally in the Palatini formulation, where the vierbein and the spin connection are independent fields. Neither torsion nor non-metricity are excluded. The manifestly covariant gauge process is based on canonical transformations in the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formalism, starting from a small number of basic postulates. Thereby, the original system of matter fields in flat spacetime, represented by non-degenerate Hamiltonian densities, is amended by spacetime fields. The coupling of matter and spacetime fields leaves the action integral of the combined system invariant under active local Lorentz transformations and passive diffeomorphisms, aka Principle of General Relativity. We consider the Klein-Gordon, Maxwell-Proca, and Dirac fields and derive the corresponding equations of motion. Albeit the coupling of the given matter fields to the gauge fields are unambiguously determined by CCGG, the dynamics of the free gauge fields must be postulated based on physical reasoning. Our choice allows to derive Poisson-like equations of motion also for curvature and torsion. The latter is proven to be totally anti-symmetric. The affine connection is a function of the spin connection and vierbein fields. Requesting the spin connection to be anti-symmetric gives naturally metric compatibility. The canonical equations combine to an extension of the Einstein-Hilbert action with a quadratic Riemann-Cartan concomitant that endows spacetime with inertia. Moreover, a non-degenerate, quadratic version of the free Dirac Lagrangian is deployed. When coupled to gravity, the Dirac equation is endowed with an emergent mass parameter, a curvature-dependent mass correction, and novel interactions between particle spin and spacetime torsion.

Abstract:We derive a coordinate-independent formulation of the post-1-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. This formulation is a generalization of the Newton-Cartan geometric formulation of Newtonian gravity. It involves several fields and a connection, but no spacetime metric at the fundamental level. We show that the usual coordinate-dependent equations of post-Newtonian gravity are recovered when one specializes to asymptotically flat spacetimes and to appropriate classes of coordinates.

A Note On The Canonical Formalism for Gravity

Abstract:We describe a simple gauge-fixing that leads to a construction of a quantum Hilbert space for quantum gravity in an asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime, valid to all orders of perturbation theory. The construction is motivated by a relationship of the phase space of gravity in asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime to a cotangent bundle. We describe what is known about this relationship and some extensions that might plausibly be true. A key fact is that, under certain conditions, the Einstein Hamiltonian constraint equation can be viewed as a way to gauge fix the group of conformal rescalings of the metric of a Cauchy hypersurface. An analog of the procedure that we follow for Anti de Sitter gravity leads to standard results for a Klein-Gordon particle.

Rigorous derivation of dark energy and inflation as geometry effects in Covariant Canonical Gauge Gravity

Abstract:The cosmological implications of the Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Gravity (CCGG) are investigated. CCGG is a Palatini theory derived from first principles using the canonical transformation formalism in the covariant Hamiltonian formulation. The Einstein-Hilbert theory is thereby extended by a quadratic Riemann-Cartan term in the Lagrangian. Moreover, the requirement of covariant conservation of the stress-energy tensor leads to necessary presence of torsion. In the Friedman universe that promotes the cosmological constant to a time-dependent function, and gives rise to a geometrical correction with the EOS of dark radiation. The resulting cosmology, compatible with the $\Lambda$CDM parameter set, encompasses bounce and bang scenarios with graceful exits into the late dark energy era. Testing those scenarios against low-z observations shows that CCGG is a viable theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate, for the first time, in a systematic manner, Galilean relativistic Born–Infeld action in detail. Exploiting maps connecting Lorentz relativistic and Galilean relativistic vectors, we construct the two limits (electric and magnetic) of Galilean relativistic Born–Infeld action from usual relativistic Born–Infeld theory. An action formalism is thereby derived. From this action, equations of motion are obtained either in the potential or field formulation. Galilean version of duality transformations involving the electric and magnetic fields are defined. They map the electric limit relations to the magnetic ones and vice-versa, exactly as happens for Galilean relativistic Maxwell theory. We also explicitly show the Galilean boost and gauge invariances of the theory in both limits.

Abstract:We propose a novel modified gravity: unimodular generalization of the Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity within the framework of cosmology. After formulating the action corresponding to the generalized Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity, we present a reconstruction scheme of this unimodular extension to achieve various cosmological eras of the universe. Interestingly, the unimodular generalization of Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity proves to be suitable for inflation (de-Sitter and quasi de-Sitter) along with power law cosmology which actually includes from reheating to the Standard Big-Bang cosmology. Apart from the inflation, such generalized Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ theory is also capable to trigger non-singular bouncing cosmology for suitable forms of the unimodular Lagrange multiplier, which are exotic for the standard Einstein-Hilbert gravity and cannot be realized in that case. The possible consequences are discussed.

Abstract:We develop a Hamiltonian formalism of brane-world gravity, which singles out two preferred, mutually orthogonal directions. One is a unit twist-free field of spatial vectors with integral lines intersecting perpendicularly the brane. The other is a temporal vector field with respect to which we perform the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition of the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian. The gravitational variables arise from the projections of the spatial metric and their canonically conjugated momenta as tensorial, vectorial and scalar quantities defined on the family of hypersurfaces containing the brane. They represent the gravitons, a gravi-photon and a gravi-scalar, respectively. From the action we derive the canonical evolution equations and the constraints for these gravitational degrees of freedom both on the brane and outside it. By integrating across the brane, the dynamics also generates the tensorial and scalar projection of the Lanczos equation. The vectorial projection of the Lanczos equation arises in a similar way from the diffeomorphism constraint. Both the graviton and the gravi-scalar are continuous across the brane, however the momentum of the gravi-vector has a jump, related to the energy transport (heat flow) on the brane.

Abstract:This paper gives a brief overview of the manifestly covariant canonical gauge gravity (CCGG) that is rooted in the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation of relativistic field theories, and the proven methodology of the canonical transformation theory. That framework derives, from a few basic physical and mathematical assumptions, equations describing generic matter and gravity dynamics with the spin connection emerging as a Yang Mills-type gauge field. While the interaction of any matter field with spacetime is fixed just by the transformation property of that field, a concrete gravity ansatz is introduced by the choice of the free (kinetic) gravity Hamiltonian. The key elements of this approach are discussed and its implications for particle dynamics and cosmology presented. Among the results are especially: - Anomalous Pauli coupling of spinors to curvature and torsion of spacetime, - spacetime with (A)dS ground state, inertia, torsion and geometrical vacuum energy, - Zero-energy balance of the Universe leading to a vanishing cosmological constant and torsional dark energy.

Abstract:This work introduces a novel prescription for the expression of the thermodynamic potentials associated with the couplings of a Lanczos-Lovelock theory. These potentials emerge in theories with multiple couplings, where the ratio between them provide intrinsic length scales that break scale invariance. Our prescription, derived from the covariant phase space formalism, differs from previous approaches by enabling the construction of finite potentials without reference to any background. To do so, we consistently work with finite-size systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions and rigorously take into account boundary and corner terms: including these terms is found to be crucial for relaxing the integrability conditions for phase space quantities that were required in previous works. We apply this prescription to the first law of (extended) thermodynamics for stationary black holes, and derive a version of the Smarr formula that holds for static black holes with arbitrary asymptotic behaviour.

Abstract:In this paper we study in detail the equivalence of the recently introduced Born-Infeld self dual model to the Abelian Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons model in 2+1 dimensions. We first apply the improved Batalin, Fradkin and Tyutin scheme, to embed the Born-Infeld Self dual model to a gauge system and show that the embedded model is equivalent to Abelian Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons theory. Next, using Buscher's duality procedure, we demonstrate this equivalence in a covariant Lagrangian formulation and also derive the mapping between the n-point correlators of the (dual) field strength in Born-Infeld Chern-Simons theory and of basic field in Born-Infeld Self dual model. Using this equivalence, the bosonization of a massive Dirac theory with a non-polynomial Thirring type current-current coupling, to leading order in (inverse) fermion mass is also discussed. We also re-derive it using a master Lagrangian. Finally, the operator equivalence between the fermionic current and (dual) field strength of Born-Infeld Chern-Simons theory is deduced at the level of correlators and using this the current-current commutators are obtained.
