Abstract:With the rapid development of robotics swarm technology, there are more tasks that require the swarm to pass through complicated environments safely and efficiently. Virtual tube technology is a novel way to achieve this goal. Virtual tubes are free spaces connecting two places that provide safety boundaries and direction of motion for swarm robotics. How to determine the design quality of a virtual tube is a fundamental problem. For such a purpose, this paper presents a degree of flowability (DOF) for two-dimensional virtual tubes according to a minimum energy principle. After that, methods to calculate DOF are proposed with a feasibility analysis. Simulations of swarm robotics in different kinds of two-dimensional virtual tubes are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method of calculating DOF.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: how to evaluate the design quality of the virtual tube, especially its traffic capacity (i.e., the ease with which flowing materials can pass through). Specifically, the paper focuses on the problem of providing safe and efficient path planning for robot swarms. In complex environments, when robot swarms need to move through narrow and curved corridors or towards a common destination, they may encounter congestion and reduced efficiency. Therefore, evaluating the "flowability" of the virtual tube is crucial for path planning and control. ### Research Background and Motivation With the rapid development of swarm robotics technology, more and more tasks require robot swarms to be able to pass through complex environments safely and efficiently. The virtual tube technology is a novel method that provides safety boundaries and movement directions for robot swarms by creating free space connecting two locations. However, how to evaluate the design quality of the virtual tube is a fundamental problem. For this reason, this paper proposes a two - dimensional virtual tube flowability measure (Degree of Flowability, DOF) based on the principle of minimum energy, and presents the method for calculating DOF and its feasibility analysis. ### Solutions 1. **Define the Flowability Measure (DOF)** - The flowability measure (DOF) is defined as the ratio of the average width of the virtual tube to the minimum input energy required to move the cross - section along the generating curve. The specific formula is as follows: \[ \text{DOF}=\frac{l}{E} \] where \(E\) is the minimum input energy and \(l\) is the average width of the virtual tube, defined as: \[ l = \frac{1}{s_f - s_0}\int_{s_0}^{s_f}l(s)ds \] 2. **Calculation Method** - Through numerical integration and mechanical analysis, calculate the external work when each infinitesimal element moves along the generating curve. The specific expression is: \[ E(\theta,\lambda_{\text{init}})=\int_{p(s_0,\theta,\lambda_{\text{init}})}^{p(s_f,\theta,\lambda_{\text{init}})}f(s,\theta,\lambda_{\text{init}})^T dp(s,\theta,\lambda_{\text{init}}) \] The total external work is: \[ E=\int_{\lambda_{\text{init}}}\int_{\theta}E(\theta,\lambda_{\text{init}})d\theta d\lambda_{\text{init}} \] 3. **Simulation Verification** - Verify the effectiveness of the proposed DOF calculation method by simulating different types of two - dimensional virtual tubes. The results show that the virtual tube with an expanding radius (such as Tube B) exhibits a higher DOF value, indicating that it is easier to pass through. ### Conclusion This paper proposes a new measurement method - the flowability measure (DOF) - for evaluating the design quality of virtual tubes. By introducing the principle of minimum energy, DOF not only considers the geometric characteristics of the tube but also the energy consumption of the robot swarm when passing through the tube. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of this method and provide a theoretical basis for future research.
