Abstract:We proved that the boundary Dehn twist on the Milnor fiber $M_c(2, q, r)$ is an exotic diffeomorphism relative to the boundary if $q, r$ are odd, coprime integers bigger than $3$ and $(q-1)(r-1)/4$ is an odd number. The proof is given by comparing the family relative Bauer--Furuta invariants of the mapping torus.

Abstract:We study the monodromy diffeomorphism of Milnor fibrations of isolated complex surface singularities, by computing the family Seiberg--Witten invariant of Seifert-fibered Dehn twists using recent advances in monopole Floer homology. More precisely, we establish infinite order non-triviality results for boundary Dehn twists on indefinite symplectic fillings of links of minimally elliptic surface singularities. Using this, we exhibit a wide variety of new phenomena in dimension four: (1) smoothings of isolated complex surface singularities whose Milnor fibration has monodromy with infinite order as a diffeomorphism but with finite order as a homeomorphism, (2) robust Torelli symplectomorphisms that do not factor as products of Dehn--Seidel twists, (3) compactly supported exotic diffeomorphisms of exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s and contractible manifolds.

Abstract:Kronheimer-Mrowka shows that the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of two $K3$ surfaces is not smoothly isotopic to the identity. Their result requires that the manifolds are simply connected and the signature of one of them is $16 \mod 32$. We generalize the Pin$(2)$-equivariant family Bauer-Furuta invariant to nonsimply connected manifolds, and construct a refinement of this invariant. We use it to show that, if $X_1,X_2$ are two homology tori such that the determinants $r_1,r_2$ of them are odd, then the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of $X_1\# X_2$ is not smoothly isotopic to the identity.

Exotic Dehn twists on 4-manifolds

Abstract:We initiate the study of exotic Dehn twists along 3-manifolds $\neq S^3$ inside $4$-manifolds, which produces the first known examples of exotic diffeomorphisms of contractible 4-manifolds, more generally of definite 4-manifolds, and exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with $\neq S^3$ boundary that survive after one stabilization. We also construct the smallest closed 4-manifold known to support an exotic diffeomorphism. These exotic diffeomorphisms are the Dehn twists along certain Seifert fibered 3-manifolds. As a consequence, we get loops of diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds that topologically extend to some 4-manifolds $X$ but not smoothly so, implying the non-surjectivity of $\pi_1(\mathrm{Diff}(X)) \to \pi_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(X))$. Our method uses $2$-parameter families Seiberg-Witten theory over $\mathbb{RP}^2$, while known methods to detect exotic diffeomorphisms used $1$-parameter families gauge-theoretic invariants. Using a similar strategy, we construct a new kind of exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, given as commutators of diffeomorphisms.

Cofinal elements and fractional Dehn twist coefficients

Abstract:We show that for a surface $S$ with positive genus and one boundary component, the mapping class of a Dehn twist along a curve parallel to the boundary is cofinal in every left ordering of the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}(S)$. We apply this result to show that one of the usual definitions of the fractional Dehn twist coefficient -- via translation numbers of a particular action of $\operatorname{Mod}(S)$ on $\mathbb{R}$ -- is in fact independent of the underlying action when $S$ has genus larger than one. As an algebraic counterpart to this, we provide a formula that recovers the fractional Dehn twist coefficient of a homeomorphism of $S$ from an arbitrary left ordering of $\operatorname{Mod}(S)$.

Abstract:Kronheimer-Mrowka recently proved that the Dehn twist along a 3-sphere in the neck of $K3\#K3$ is not smoothly isotopic to the identity. This provides a new example of self-diffeomorphisms on 4-manifolds that are isotopic to the identity in the topological category but not smoothly so. (The first such examples were given by Ruberman.) In this paper, we use the Pin(2)-equivariant Bauer-Furuta invariant to show that this Dehn twist is not smoothly isotopic to the identity even after a single stabilization (connected summing with the identity map on $S^{2}\times S^{2}$). This gives the first example of exotic phenomena on simply connected smooth 4-manifolds that do not disappear after a single stabilization.

Abstract:We characterize the fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) on the n-stranded braid group as the unique homogeneous quasimorphism to of defect at most 1 that equals 1 on the positive full twist and vanishes on the -stranded braid subgroup. In a different direction, we establish that the slice-Bennequin inequality holds with the FDTC in place of the writhe. In other words, we establish an affine linear lower bound for the smooth slice genus of the closure of a braid in terms of the braid's FDTC. We also discuss connections between these two seemingly unrelated results. In the appendix, we provide a unifying framework for the slice-Bennequin inequality and its counterpart for the FDTC.

Abstract:Given a fibred hyperbolic 3-manifold with boundary, we coarsely relate the Euclidean geometry of its cusps to the classical fractional Dehn twist coefficient of its monodromy. This result fits into the broader programme of coarsely describing the geometry of a hyperbolic 3-manifold via combinatorial data. We are thus able to study the hyperbolic geometry of certain fibred 3-manifolds under Dehn filling. For example, we find coarse volume estimates for sufficiently twisted braid closures in terms of their braid words. We also prove that for any open book decomposition of a fixed manifold (that is not a lens space or solid torus) with fibre of fixed Euler characteristic the fractional Dehn twist coefficient in some boundary component is uniformly bounded. Finally, we obtain applications to contact topology. We give a geometric criterion on the binding of an open book decomposition for the corresponding contact structure in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to be tight.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the following new ingredients: (1) rework on part of the Lagrangian surgery theory; (2) constructions of Lagrangian cobordisms on product symplectic manifolds; (3) extending Biran-Cornea Lagrangian cobordism theory to the immersed category. As a result, we manifest Seidel's exact sequences (both the Lagrangian version and the symplectomorphism version), as well as Wehrheim-Woodward's family Dehn twist sequence (including the codimension-1 case missing in the literature) as consequences of our surgery/cobordism constructions. Moreover, we obtain an expression of the autoequivalence of Fukaya category induced by Dehn twists along Lagrangian $\mathbb{RP}^n$, $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and $\mathbb{HP}^n$, which matches Huybrechts-Thomas's mirror prediction of the $\mathbb{CP}^n$ case modulo connecting maps. We also prove the split generation of any symplectomorphism by Dehn twists in $ADE$-type Milnor fibers.
On the deformation theory of Fourier-Mukai transforms between Calabi-Yau varieties

Abstract:We study the deformation theory of fully faithful Fourier-Mukai transforms in both characteristic zero and mixed characteristic. Our main result shows that obstructions to deforming such transforms can be completely controlled by Hodge theory when the source variety has trivial canonical bundle, generalizing work of Addington-Thomas and Lieblich-Olsson. The main technical contribution is a formula for the obstruction class measuring the failure of a Chern character to remain within the Hodge filtration as a cup product with a (derived) Kodaira-Spencer class.

Abstract:We give an explicit description of the Floer cohomology of a family of Dehn twists about disjoint Lagrangian spheres in a w+ - monotone rational symplectic manifold. As a byproduct of our framework, in a monotone symplectic manifold we are able to define a class in the fixed point Floer cohomology of a Dehn twist by counting half strips bound to the given Lagrangian sphere and prove it must vanish. In subsequent work we plan on using this vanishing result to give a new geometric proof of Seidel's long exact sequence.

Abstract:We exhibit the first examples of exotic contactomorphisms with infinite order as elements of the contact mapping class group. These are given by certain Dehn twists on the separating sphere in a connected sum of two closed contact 3-manifolds. We detect these by a combination of hard and soft techniques. On the one hand, we make essential use of an invariant for families of contact structures which generalises the Kronheimer--Mrowka contact invariant in monopole Floer homology. We then exploit an h-principle for families of convex spheres in tight contact 3-manifolds, from which we establish a parametric version of Colin's decomposition theorem. As a further application, we also exhibit new exotic 1-parametric phenomena in overtwisted contact 3-manifolds.

Twisted Iwasawa invariants of knots

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $m$ an integer coprime to $p$. In the spirit of arithmetic topology, we introduce the notions of the twisted Iwasawa invariants $\lambda, \mu, \nu$ of ${\rm GL}_N$-representations and $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}_p$-covers of knots. We prove among other things that the set of Iwasawa invariants determine the genus and the fiberedness of a knot, yielding their profinite rigidity. Several intuitive examples are attached. We further prove the $\mu=0$ theorem for ${\rm SL}_2$-representations of twist knot groups and give some remarks.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of deformed quantum vertex algebra module associated with a braiding map. We construct two families of braiding maps over the Etingof-Kazhdan quantum vertex algebras associated with the rational $R$-matrices of classical types. We investigate their properties and demonstrate the applications of the corresponding deformed modules to the (generalized) Yangians and reflection algebras.

Let $\mathcal{F}^{s}$ denote the stable foliation of $\varphi$ in $\Sigma$. Let $T_1, \ldots, T_k$ denote the boundary components of $M$. With respect to a canonical choice of meridian and longitude on each $T_i$, the degeneracy locus of the suspension flow of $\varphi$ on $T_i$ can be identified with a pair of integers $(p_i; q_i)$ such that $p_i > 0$ and $-\frac{1}{2}p_i < q_i \leqslant \frac{1}{2}p_i$. We show that the Dehn filling of $M$ along $\partial M$ with any multislope in $J_1 \times \ldots \times J_k$ admits a co-orientable taut foliation, where $J_i$ is one of the two open intervals in $\mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\} \cong \mathbb{R}P^{1}$ between $\frac{p_i}{q_i + c_i}, \frac{p_i}{q_i - c_i}$ which doesn't contain $\frac{p_i}{q_i}$. For some hyperbolic fibered knot manifolds, the slopes given above contain all slopes that yield non-L-space Dehn filllings. The examples include (1) the exterior of the $(-2,3,2q+1)$-pretzel knot in $S^{3}$ for each $q \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geqslant 3}$ (see \hyperref[Kri]{[Kri]} for a previous proof), (2) the exteriors of many L-space knots in lens spaces.

The Dehn twist coefficient for big and small mapping class groups

Abstract:We study a quasimorphism, which we call the Dehn twist coefficient (DTC), from the mapping class group of a surface (with a chosen compact boundary component) that generalizes the well-studied fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) to surfaces of infinite type. Indeed, for surfaces of finite type the DTC coincides with the FDTC. We provide a characterization of the DTC (and thus also of the FDTC) as the unique homogeneous quasimorphism satisfying certain positivity conditions. The FDTC has image contained in $\mathbb{Q}$. In contrast to this, we find that for some surfaces of infinite type the DTC has image all of $\mathbb{R}$. To see this we provide a new construction of maps with irrational rotation behavior for some surfaces of infinite type with a countable space of ends or even just one end. In fact, we find that the DTC is the right tool to detect irrational rotation behavior, even for surfaces without boundary.

Abstract:It was known that the U$(N)^4$ super Chern-Simons matrix model describing the worldvolume theory of D3-branes with two NS5-branes and two $(1,k)$5-branes in IIB brane configuration (dual to M2-branes after taking the T-duality and the M-theory lift) corresponds to the $D_5$ quantum curve. For deformations of these two objects, on one hand the super Chern-Simons matrix model has three degrees of freedom (of relative rank deformations interpreted as fractional branes in brane configurations), while on the other hand the $D_5$ curve has five degrees of freedom (characterized by point configurations of asymptotic values). To identify the three-dimensional parameter space of brane configurations in the five-dimensional space of point configurations, we propose the necessity to cut the compact T-duality circle (or the circular quiver diagram) open, which is similar to the idea of "fixing a reference frame" or "fixing a local chart". Since the parameter space of curves enjoys the $D_5$ Weyl group beautifully, we are naturally led to conjecture that M2-branes are not only deformed by fractional branes but more obscure geometrical backgrounds.
