Abstract:This article describes local normal forms of functions in noncommuting variables, up to equivalence generated by isomorphism of noncommutative Jacobi algebras, extending singularity theory in the style of Arnold's commutative local normal forms into the noncommutative realm. This generalisation unveils many new phenomena, including an ADE classification when the Jacobi ring has dimension zero and, by suitably taking limits, a further ADE classification in dimension one. These are natural generalisations of the simple singularities and those with infinite multiplicity in Arnold's classification. We obtain normal forms away from some exceptional Type E cases. Remarkably these normal forms have no moduli, and the key new feature is that the noncommutative world affords larger families. This theory has a range of immediate consequences to the birational geometry of 3-folds. The normal forms of dimension zero are the analytic classification of smooth 3-fold flops, and one outcome of NC singularity theory is the first complete list of all Type D flopping germs, with variants covering Type E. The normal forms of dimension one have further ramifications to divisorial contractions to a curve. In addition, the general techniques also give strong evidence towards new contractibility criteria for rational curves.

Abstract:For any non-degenerate, quasi-homogeneous hypersurface singularity, we describe a family of moduli spaces, a virtual cycle, and a corresponding cohomological field theory associated to the singularity. This theory is analogous to Gromov-Witten theory and generalizes the theory of r-spin curves, which corresponds to the simple singularity A_r-1. We also resolve two outstanding conjectures of Witten. The first conjecture is that ADE-singularities are self-dual; and the second conjecture is that the total potential functions of ADE-singularities satisfy corresponding ADE-integrable hierarchies. Other cases of integrable hierarchies are also discussed.

Abstract:This is the abstract prepared for Workshop on Topology and Geometry (Zhang jiang, China, October 1994), and is a review of my recent works. What kinds of combinations of singularities can appear in small deformation fibers of a fixed singularity? We consider this problem for hypersurface singularities on complex analytic spaces of dimension 2. For all singularities in the beginning par t of Arnold's classification list, the answer to this problem is given by a unique principle described by Dynkin graphs. The probabilistic method in real singularity theory

Abstract:We explain how to use the probabilistic method to prove the existence of real polynomial singularities with rich topology, i.e. with total Betti number of the maximal possible order. We show how similar ideas can be used to produce real algebraic projective hypersurfaces with a rich structure of umbilical points.

Abstract:We give a review of our construction of a cohomological field theory for quasi-homogeneous singularities and the r-spin theory of Jarvis-KimuraVaintrob. We further prove that for a singularity W of type A our construction of the stack of W-curves is canonically isomorphic to the stack of r-spin curves described by Abramovich and Jarvis. We further prove that our theory satisfies all the Jarvis-Kimura-Vaintrob axioms for an r-spin virtual class. Therefore, the Faber-Shadrin-Zvonkine proof of the Witten Integrable Hierarchies Conjecture for r-spin curves applies to our theory for A-type singularities; that is, the total descendant potential function of our theory for A-type singularities satisfies the corresponding Gelfand-Dikii integrable hierarchy.

Abstract:We study the miniversal deformations of minimally elliptic two-dimensional singularities of multiplicities of 5, 6 and 7. By restricting the miniversal deformations on the line transverse to the discriminant locus, we construct many new three-dimensional isolated rational Gorenstein singularities with one-dimensional equisingular deformation and nontrivial T-2. In fact the three-dimensional isolated rational Gorenstein singularities constructed from minimally elliptic singularities of multiplicity 5 has four-dimensional family of deformation, of which one-dimensional family is equisingular in the sense of Hilbert polynomial. On the other hand, the three-dimensional isolated rational Gorenstein singularities constructed from minimally elliptic singularities of multiplicity 6 and 7 respectively has nontrivial T-2 and has one-dimensional equisingular family of deformation. These singularities define many new interesting four dimensional N = 2 superconformal field theories.

Abstract:In [5], Donovan and Wemyss introduced the contraction algebra of flopping curves in 3-folds. They conjectured that the contraction algebra determines the formal neighborhood of the underlying singularity of the contraction. In this paper, we prove that the contraction algebra together with its natural $A_\infty$-structure constructed in [10], determine the formal neighborhood of the singularity.

Abstract:We construct a non-affine analogue of the singularity category of a Gorenstein local ring. With this, Buchweitz's classic equivalence of three triangulated categories over a Gorenstein local ring has been generalized to schemes, a project started by Murfet and Salarian more than ten years ago. Our construction originates in a framework we develop for singularity categories of exact categories. As an application of this framework in the non-commutative setting, we characterize rings of finite finitistic dimension.
A new formulation of regular singularity

Abstract:We provide an alternative definition for the familiar concept of regular singularity for meromorphic connections. Our new formulation does not use derived categories, and it also avoids the necessity of finding a special good filtration as in the formulation due to Kashiwara--Kawai. Moreover, our formulation provides an explicit algorithm to decide the regular singularity of a meromorphic connection. An important intermediary result, interesting in its own right, is that taking associated graded modules with respect to (not necessarily canonical) $V$-filtrations commutes with non-characteristic restriction. This allows us to reduce the proof of the equivalence of our formulation with the classical concept to the one-dimensional case. In that situation, we extend the well-known one-dimensional Fuchs criterion for ideals in the Weyl algebra to arbitrary holonomic modules over the Weyl algebra equipped with an arbitrary $(-1,1)$-filtration.

Toward Singularity Theorems with Torsion

Abstract:This study examines the formulation of a singularity theorem for timelike curves including torsion, and establishes the foundational framework necessary for its derivation. We begin by deriving the relative acceleration for an arbitrary congruence of timelike curves. The resulting ``deviation equation'' offers an alternative pathway to the well-known Raychaudhuri equation with torsion. Conjugate points are then introduced and analyzed in relation to the behavior of the scalar expansion. Together with the sensible requirement of hypersurface orthogonality, the Raychaudhuri equation is examined for several specific cases of torsion that are prominent in the literature. Our findings indicate that a totally antisymmetric torsion tensor does not influence the behavior of the congruence of timelike curves. Finally, we formulate a singularity theorem for timelike curves and highlight the critical requirement of non-autoparallel curves.

Abstract: This is the first of a series of papers in which we systematically use singularity theory to study four dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories. Our main focus in this paper is to identify what kind of singularity is needed to define a SCFT. The constraint for a hypersurface singularity has been found by Sharpere and Vafa, and here the complete set of solutions are listed using a related mathematical result of Stephen S. T. Yau and Yu. We also study other type of singularities such as the complete intersection, quotient of hypersurface singularity by a finite group and non-isolated singularity. We finally conjecture that any three dimensional rational Gorenstein graded isolated singularity should define a N=2 SCFT. We explain how to extract various interesting physical quantities such as Seiberg-Witten geometry, central charges, exact marginal deformations, BPS quiver, RG flow trajectory, etc from the properties of singularity.
On the Gauss-Manin Connection and Real Singularities

Abstract:We prove that to each real singularity $f: (\mathbb{R}^{n+1}, 0) \to (\mathbb{R}, 0)$ one can associate two systems of differential equations $\mathfrak{g}^{k\pm}_f$ which are pushforwards in the category of $\mathcal{D}$-modules over $\mathbb{R}^{\pm}$, of the sheaf of real analytic functions on the total space of the positive, respectively negative, Milnor fibration. We prove that for $k=0$ if $f$ is an isolated singularity then $\mathfrak{g}^{\pm}$ determines the the $n$-th homology groups of the positive, respectively negative, Milnor fibre. We then calculate $\mathfrak{g}^{+}$ for ordinary quadratic singularities and prove that under certain conditions on the choice of morsification, one recovers the top homology groups of the Milnor fibers of any isolated singularity $f$. As an application we construct a public-key encryption scheme based on morsification of singularities.

Abstract:This paper contributes to the theory of singularities of meromorphic linear ODEs in traceless $2\times2$ cases, focusing on their deformations and confluences. It is divided into two parts: The first part addresses individual singularities without imposing restrictions on their type or degeneracy. The main result establishes a correspondence between local formal invariants and jets of meromorphic quadratic differentials. This result is then utilized to describe the parameter space of universal isomonodromic deformation of meromorphic $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-connections over Riemann surfaces. The second part examines the confluence of singularities in a fully general setting, accommodating all forms of degeneracies. It explores the relationship between the geometry of the unfolded Stokes phenomenon and the horizontal and vertical foliations of parametric families of quadratic differentials. The local moduli space is naturally identified with a specific space of local monodromy and Stokes data, presented as a space of representations of certain fundamental groupoids associated with the foliations. This is then used for studying degenerations of isomonodromic deformations in parametric families.

Abstract:In this paper, we combine tools in pluripotential theory and commutative algebra to study singularity invariants of plurisubharmonic functions. We obtain some relationships between singularity invariants of plurisubharmonic functions and holomorphic functions. These results lead a sharp lower bound for the log canonical threshold of a plurisubharmonic function. It simultaneously improves the main result in Demailly and Pham (Acta. Math 212: 1-9, 2014), the classical result due to Skoda (Bull. Soc. Math. France 100: 353-408, 1972), as well as the lower estimate in Fernex, Ein and Mustata (Math. Res. Lett: 10 219-236, 2003) which has received crucial applications to birational geometry in recent years. Finally, we give some applications of our results to singularity invariants of complex spaces.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that for a finite quiver $Q$ the equivalence class of a potential up to formal change of variables of the complete path algebra $\widehat{\mathbb{C} Q}$, is determined by its Jacobi algebra together with the class in its 0-th Hochschild homology represented by the potential assuming the Jacobi algebra is finite dimensional. This is an noncommutative analogue of the famous theorem of Mather and Yau on isolated hypersurface singularities. We also prove that the right equivalence class of a potential is determined by its sufficiently high jet assuming the Jacobi algebra is finite dimensional. These two theorems can be viewed as a first step towards the singularity theory of noncommutative power series. As an application, we show that if the Jacobi algebra is finite dimensional then the corresponding complete Ginzburg dg-algebra, and the (topological) generalized cluster category thereof, are determined by the isomorphic type of the Jacobi algebra together with the class in its 0-th Hochschild homology represented by the potential.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a finite dimensional $k$-vector space, where $k$ is an algebraic closed field of characteristic zero. Let $G \subseteq\ mathrm{SL}(V)$ be a finite abelian group, and denote by $S$ the $G$-invariant subring of the polynomial ring $k[V]$. It is shown that the singularity category $D_{sg}(S)$ recovers the reduced singular locus of $\mathrm{Spec}(S)$.

Abstract:This text surveys cohomological properties of pairs $(U,f)$ consisting of a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $U$ together with a regular function on~it. On the one hand, one tries to mimic the case of a germ of holomorphic function in its Milnor ball and, on the other hand, one takes advantage of the algebraicity of~$U$ and $f$ to apply technique of algebraic geometry, in particular Hodge theory. The monodromy properties are expressed by means of tools provided by the theory of linear differential equations, by mimicking the Stokes phenomenon. In the case of tame functions on smooth affine varieties, which is an algebraic analogue of that of a holomorphic function with an isolated critical point, the theory simplifies much and the formulation of the results are nicer. Examples of such tame functions are exhibited.
