Abstract:An involution refers to a function that acts as its own inverse. In this paper, our focus lies on exploring two-dimensional involutive maps defined by rational functions. These functions have denominators represented by polynomials of degree one and numerators by polynomials of a degree of, at most, two, depending on parameters. We identify the sets in the parameter space of the maps that correspond to involutions. The investigation relies on leveraging algorithms from computational commutative algebra based on the Groebner basis theory. To expedite the computations, we employ modular arithmetic. Furthermore, we showcase how involution can serve as a valuable tool for identifying reversible and integrable systems within families of planar polynomial ordinary differential equations.

Abstract:A $3$-fold and a $5$-fold quadratic Pfister forms are canonically associated to every symplectic involution on a central simple algebra of degree $8$ over a field of characteristic $2$. The same construction on central simple algebras of degree $4$ associates to every unitary involution a $2$-fold and a $4$-fold Pfister quadratic forms, and to every orthogonal involution a $1$-fold and a $3$-fold quasi-Pfister forms. These forms hold structural information on the algebra with involution.

Abstract:We prove that every real nonnegative ternary quartic whose complex zero set is smooth can be represented as the determinant of a symmetric matrix with quadratic entries which is everywhere positive semidefinite. We show that the corresponding statement fails for the Robinson polynomial, answering a question by Buckley and Šivic.

Abstract:We classify birational involutions of the real projective plane up to conjugation. In contrast with an analogous classification over the complex numbers (due to E. Bertini, G. Castelnuovo, F. Enriques, L. Bayle and A. Beauville), which includes four different classes of involutions, we discover 12 different classes over the reals, and provide many examples when the fixed curve of an involution does not determine its conjugacy class in the real plane Cremona group.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, over the complex numbers, of the form x 1 x 4 − x 2 x 3 = constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: (a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, (b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and (c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on C 4 preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider polynomial correspondences $f (x, y)$ in $\mathbb{C}[x, y]$ of degree $d \ge 2$ in both the variables and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in order that the equation $f (x, y) = 0$ can be expressed as $\phi (x) = \psi (y)$, where $\phi$ and $\psi$ are fractional degree $d$ rational maps in the Riemann sphere. In the absence of involutions that played a vital role towards characterising quadratic correspondences ($d = 2$), we employ certain elementary ideas from theory of equations and matrices to achieve our results. We further explore certain symmetry conditions on the matrix of coefficients of correspondences that satisfy the above factorisation. We conclude this short note with a few examples.

Abstract:Say that $(x, y, z)$ is a positive primitive integral Pythagorean triple if $x, y, z$ are positive integers without common factors satisfying $x^2 + y^2 = z^2$. An old theorem of Berggren gives three integral invertible linear transformations whose semi-group actions on $(3, 4, 5)$ and $(4, 3, 5)$ generate all positive primitive Pythagorean triples in a unique manner. We establish an analogue of Berggren's theorem in the context of a one-variable polynomial ring over a field of characteristic $\neq 2$. As its corollaries, we obtain some structure theorems regarding the orthogonal group with respect to the Pythagorean quadratic form over the polynomial ring.

Abstract:An involution of a real commutative algebra $A$ is a real-linear homomorphism $f : A \rightarrow A$ such that $f^2 = \mathrm{Id}$. We show that there are six involutions of the algebra of bicomplex numbers, contrary to the actual number of four stated in the literature. We also characterize $n$-involutions satisfying the additional property $f^n = \mathrm{Id}$ for some integer $n \geq 2$. We show there are eight $n$-involutions and they occur only for $n = 2$ and $n= 4$. We use our result to give a new characterization of the invertible elements of the algebra of bicomplex numbers.

Counting Involutions on Multicomplex Numbers

Abstract:We show that there is a bijection between real-linear automorphisms of the multicomplex numbers of order $n$ and signed permutations of length $2^{n-1}$. This allows us to deduce a number of results on the multicomplex numbers, including a formula for the number of involutions on multicomplex spaces which generalizes a recent result on the bicomplex numbers and contrasts drastically with the quaternion case. We also generalize this formula to $r$-involutions and obtain a formula for the number of involutions preserving elementary imaginary units. The proofs rely on new elementary results pertaining to multicomplex numbers that are surprisingly unknown in the literature, including a count and a representation theorem for numbers squaring to $\pm 1$.

Abstract:We study fixed loci of antisymplectic involutions on projective hyperkähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type. When the involution is induced by an ample class of square 2 in the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki lattice, we show that the number of connected components of the fixed locus is equal to the divisibility of the class, which is either 1 or 2.

Abstract:E. Bayer-Fluckiger gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be realized as the characteristic polynomial of a semisimple isometry of an even unimodular lattice, by describing the local-global obstruction, and the author extended the result. This article presents a systematic way to compute the obstruction. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Salem number of degree $10$ or $18$ to be realized as the dynamical degree of an automorphism of nonprojective K3 surface, in terms of its minimal polynomial.

Abstract:We introduce and study a three-folded linear operator depending on three parameters that has associated a triangular number tilling of the plane. As a result, the set of all triples of integers is decomposed in classes of equivalence organized in four towers of two-dimensional triangulations. We provide the full characterization of the represented integers belonging to each network as families of certain quadratic forms. We note that one of the towers is generated by a germ that produces a covering of the plane with Löschian numbers.

On Motivic and Arithmetic Refinements of Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Abstract:In recent years, a version of enumerative geometry over arbitrary fields has been developed and studied by Kass-Wickelgren, Levine, and others, in which the counts obtained are not integers but quadratic forms. Aiming to understand the relation to other "refined invariants", and especially their possible interpretation in quantum theory, we explain how to obtain a quadratic version of Donaldson-Thomas invariants from the motivic invariants defined in the work of Kontsevich and Soibelman and pose some questions. We calculate these invariants in a few simple examples that provide standard tests for these questions, including degree zero invariants of $\mathbb A^3$ and higher-genus Gopakumar-Vafa invariants recently studied by Liu and Ruan. The comparison with known real and complex counts plays a central role throughout.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an algebraic variety equipped with a dominant rational self-map $\phi:X\to X$. A new quantity measuring the interaction of $(X,\phi)$ with trivial dynamical systems is introduced; the stabilised algebraic dimension of $(X,\phi)$ captures the maximum number of new algebraically independent invariant rational functions on the cartesian product of $(X, \phi)$ and $(Y, \psi)$, as $(Y,\psi)$ ranges over all algebraic dynamical systems. It is shown that this birational invariant agrees with the maximum dimension of a dominant equivariant rational image $(X',\phi')$ where $\phi'$ is part of an algebraic group action on $X'$. As a consequence, it is deduced that if some cartesian power of $(X,\phi)$ admits a nonconstant invariant rational function, then already the second cartesian power does.

Theta lifts to certain cohomological representations of indefinite orthogonal groups

Abstract:Howe and Tan (1993) investigated a degenerate principal series representation of indefinite orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}(V)$ and explicitly described its composition series. They showed that there exists a unique unitarizable irreducible submodule $\Pi$, which is isomorphic to a cohomological representation. In this paper we construct orthogonal automorphic forms belonging to $\Pi$ as theta liftings of holomorphic $\mathrm{Mp}_2(\mathbb{R})$ cusp forms by using the Borcherds' method. We will give a useful observation in computing their Fourier expansions that enables us to give very precise descriptions of the liftings specially belonging to $\Pi$. We will also determine the cuspidal supports of the liftings, then confirm the square integrability of those automorphic forms on orthogonal groups.

On Three-Term Linear Relations for Theta Series of Positive-Definite Binary Quadratic Forms

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate three-term linear relations among theta series of positive-definite integral binary quadratic forms. We extend Schiemann's methods to characterize all possible three-term linear relations among theta series of such forms, providing necessary and sufficient conditions for such relations to exist. To accomplish this, we develop, implement, and execute a novel extended refinement algorithm on polyhedral cones. We show that there is exactly one non-trivial three-term linear relation: it involves quadratic forms with discriminants $-3, -12, -48$, all in the same rational squareclass $-3(\mathbb{Q}^\times)^2$.
