Abstract:In this paper we continue a long line of work on representing the cut structure of graphs. We classify the types minimum vertex cuts, and the possible relationships between multiple minimum vertex cuts. As a consequence of these investigations, we exhibit a simple $O(\kappa n)$-space data structure that can quickly answer pairwise $(\kappa+1)$-connectivity queries in a $\kappa$-connected graph. We also show how to compute the"closest"$\kappa$-cut to every vertex in near linear $\tilde{O}(m+poly(\kappa)n)$ time.

Abstract:Let $G = (V,w)$ be a weighted undirected graph with $m$ edges. The cut dimension of $G$ is the dimension of the span of the characteristic vectors of the minimum cuts of $G$, viewed as vectors in $\{0,1\}^m$. For every $n \ge 2$ we show that the cut dimension of an $n$-vertex graph is at most $2n-3$, and construct graphs realizing this bound. The cut dimension was recently defined by Graur et al.\ \cite{GPRW20}, who show that the maximum cut dimension of an $n$-vertex graph is a lower bound on the number of cut queries needed by a deterministic algorithm to solve the minimum cut problem on $n$-vertex graphs. For every $n\ge 2$, Graur et al.\ exhibit a graph on $n$ vertices with cut dimension at least $3n/2 -2$, giving the first lower bound larger than $n$ on the deterministic cut query complexity of computing mincut. We observe that the cut dimension is even a lower bound on the number of \emph{linear} queries needed by a deterministic algorithm to solve mincut, where a linear query can ask any vector $x \in \mathbb{R}^{\binom{n}{2}}$ and receives the answer $w^T x$. Our results thus show a lower bound of $2n-3$ on the number of linear queries needed by a deterministic algorithm to solve minimum cut on $n$-vertex graphs, and imply that one cannot show a lower bound larger than this via the cut dimension. We further introduce a generalization of the cut dimension which we call the $\ell_1$-approximate cut dimension. The $\ell_1$-approximate cut dimension is also a lower bound on the number of linear queries needed by a deterministic algorithm to compute minimum cut. It is always at least as large as the cut dimension, and we construct an infinite family of graphs on $n=3k+1$ vertices with $\ell_1$-approximate cut dimension $2n-2$, showing that it can be strictly larger than the cut dimension.

Abstract:The maximum flow algorithm has long been known for calculating the minimum edge cut of any two vertices of a connected graph. The original algorithm, however, does not tell us which edges should be taken exactly and therefore there could be more than one way to construct a minimum-edge-cut set. In this paper, we propose a new method to get a minimum-edge-cut set by selecting edges of a graph in the order of betweenness. By comparing with the augmenting path method, it tends to make the two divided parts of a graph more balanced.
Finding Diverse Minimum s-t Cuts

Abstract:Recently, many studies have been devoted to finding diverse solutions in classical combinatorial problems, such as Vertex Cover (Baste et al., IJCAI'20), Matching (Fomin et al., ISAAC'20) and Spanning Tree (Hanaka et al., AAAI'21). We initiate the algorithmic study of $k$-Diverse Minimum s-t Cuts which, given a directed graph $G = (V, E)$, two specified vertices $s,t \in V$, and an integer $k > 0$, asks for a collection of $k$ minimum $s$-$t$ cuts in $G$ that has maximum diversity. We investigate the complexity of the problem for maximizing three diversity measures that can be applied to a collection of cuts: (i) the sum of all pairwise Hamming distances, (ii) the cardinality of the union of cuts in the collection, and (iii) the minimum pairwise Hamming distance. We prove that $k$-Diverse Minimum s-t Cuts can be solved in strongly polynomial time for diversity measures (i) and (ii) via submodular function minimization. We obtain this result by establishing a connection between ordered collections of minimum $s$-$t$ cuts and the theory of distributive lattices. When restricted to finding only collections of mutually disjoint solutions, we provide a more practical algorithm that finds a maximum set of pairwise disjoint minimum $s$-$t$ cuts. For graphs with small minimum $s$-$t$ cut, it runs in the time of a single max-flow computation. Our results stand in contrast to the problem of finding $k$ diverse global minimum cuts -- which is known to be NP-hard even for the disjoint case (Hanaka et al., AAAI'23) -- and partially answer a long-standing open question of Wagner (Networks, 1990) about improving the complexity of finding disjoint collections of minimum $s$-$t$ cuts. Lastly, we show that $k$-Diverse Minimum s-t Cuts subject to diversity measure (iii) is NP-hard already for $k=3$.

Lower Bounds for Maximum Weighted Cut

Abstract:While there have been many results on lower bounds for Max Cut in unweighted graphs, there are only few results for lower bounds for Max Cut in weighted graphs. In this paper, we launch an extensive study of lower bounds for Max Cut in weighted graphs. We introduce a new approach for obtaining lower bounds for Weighted Max Cut. Using it, Probabilistic Method, Vizing's chromatic index theorem, and other tools, we obtain several lower bounds for arbitrary weighted graphs, weighted graphs of bounded girth and triangle-free weighted graphs. We pose conjectures and open questions.

Search-Space Reduction Via Essential Vertices Revisited: Vertex Multicut and Cograph Deletion

Abstract:For an optimization problem $\Pi$ on graphs whose solutions are vertex sets, a vertex $v$ is called $c$-essential for $\Pi$ if all solutions of size at most $c \cdot OPT$ contain $v$. Recent work showed that polynomial-time algorithms to detect $c$-essential vertices can be used to reduce the search space of fixed-parameter tractable algorithms solving such problems parameterized by the size $k$ of the solution. We provide several new upper- and lower bounds for detecting essential vertices. For example, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for $3$-Essential detection for Vertex Multicut, which translates into an algorithm that finds a minimum multicut of an undirected $n$-vertex graph $G$ in time $2^{O(\ell^3)} \cdot n^{O(1)}$, where $\ell$ is the number of vertices in an optimal solution that are not $3$-essential. Our positive results are obtained by analyzing the integrality gaps of certain linear programs. Our lower bounds show that for sufficiently small values of $c$, the detection task becomes NP-hard assuming the Unique Games Conjecture. For example, we show that ($2-\varepsilon$)-Essential detection for Directed Feedback Vertex Set is NP-hard under this conjecture, thereby proving that the existing algorithm that detects $2$-essential vertices is best-possible.

Vital Edges for (s,t)-mincut: Efficient Algorithms, Compact Structures, and Optimal Sensitivity Oracle

Abstract:Let G be a directed weighted graph (DiGraph) on n vertices and m edges with source s and sink t. An edge in G is vital if its removal reduces the capacity of (s,t)-mincut. Since the seminal work of Ford and Fulkerson, a long line of work has been done on computing the most vital edge and all vital edges of G. Unfortunately, after 60 years, the existing results are for undirected or unweighted graphs. We present the following result for DiGraph, which solves an open problem stated by Ausiello et al. 1. There is an algorithm that computes all vital edges as well as the most vital edge of G using O(n) maxflow computations. Vital edges play a crucial role in the design of Sensitivity Oracle (SO) for (s,t)-mincut. For directed graphs, the only existing SO is for unweighted graphs by Picard and Queyranne. We present the first and optimal SO for DiGraph. 2. (a) There is an O(n) space SO that can report in O(1) time the capacity of (s,t)-mincut and (b) an O($n^2$) space SO that can report an (s,t)-mincut in O(n) time after failure/insertion of an edge. For unweighted graphs, Picard and Queyranne designed an O(m) space DAG that stores and characterizes all mincuts for all vital edges. Conversely, there is a set containing at most n-1 (s,t)-cuts such that at least one mincut for every vital edge belongs to the set. We generalize these results for DiGraph. 3. (a) There is a set containing at most n-1 (s,t)-cuts such that at least one mincut for every vital edge is present in the set. (b) We design two compact structures for storing and characterizing all mincuts for all vital edges, (i) O(m) space DAG for partial characterization and (ii) O(mn) space structure for complete characterization. To arrive at our results, we develop new techniques, especially a generalization of maxflow-mincut theorem by Ford and Fulkerson, which might be of independent interest.

A sublinear query quantum algorithm for s-t minimum cut on dense simple graphs

Abstract:An $s{\operatorname{-}}t$ minimum cut in a graph corresponds to a minimum weight subset of edges whose removal disconnects vertices $s$ and $t$. Finding such a cut is a classic problem that is dual to that of finding a maximum flow from $s$ to $t$. In this work we describe a quantum algorithm for the minimum $s{\operatorname{-}}t$ cut problem on undirected graphs. For an undirected graph with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, and integral edge weights bounded by $W$, the algorithm computes with high probability the weight of a minimum $s{\operatorname{-}}t$ cut after $\widetilde O(\sqrt{m} n^{5/6} W^{1/3})$ queries to the adjacency list of $G$. For simple graphs this bound is always $\widetilde O(n^{11/6})$, even in the dense case when $m = \Omega(n^2)$. In contrast, a randomized algorithm must make $\Omega(m)$ queries to the adjacency list of a simple graph $G$ even to decide whether $s$ and $t$ are connected.

Abstract:Planar hypergraphs are widely used in several applications, including VLSI design, metro maps, information visualisation, and databases. The minimum hypercut problem in a weighted hypergraph is to find a partition of the vertices into two nonempty sets, S and , with and that minimizes the total weight of hyperedges that have at least two endpoints in two different sets. In the present study, we propose an approach that effectively solves the minimum hypercut problem in ( s , t )-planar hypergraphs. The method proposed demonstrates polynomial time complexity, providing a significant advancement in solving this problem. The modelling example shows that the proposed strategy is effective at obtaining balanced bipartitions in VLSI circuits.

OrderedCuts: A new approach for computing Gomory-Hu tree

Abstract:The Gomory-Hu tree, or a cut tree, is a classic data structure that stores minimum $s$-$t$ cuts of an undirected weighted graph for all pairs of nodes $(s,t)$. We propose a new approach for computing the cut tree based on a reduction to the problem that we call OrderedCuts. Given a sequence of nodes $s,v_1,\ldots,v_\ell$, its goal is to compute minimum $\{s,v_1,\ldots,v_{i-1}\}$-$v_i$ cuts for all $i\in[\ell]$. We show that the cut tree can be computed by $\tilde O(1)$ calls to OrderedCuts. We also establish new results for OrderedCuts that may be of independent interest. First, we prove that all $\ell$ cuts can be stored compactly with $O(n)$ space in a data structure that we call an OC tree. We define a weaker version of this structure that we call depth-1 OC tree, and show that it is sufficient for constructing the cut tree. Second, we prove results that allow divide-and-conquer algorithms for computing OC tree. We argue that the existence of divide-and-conquer algorithms makes our new approach a good candidate for a practical implementation.

Abstract:Given an undirected weighted graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, we give the first deterministic $m^{1+o(1)}$-time algorithm for constructing the cactus representation of \emph{all} global minimum cuts. This improves the current $n^{2+o(1)}$-time state-of-the-art deterministic algorithm, which can be obtained by combining ideas implicitly from three papers [Karger JACM'2000, Li STOC'2021, and Gabow TALG'2016] The known explicitly stated deterministic algorithm has a runtime of $\tilde{O}(mn)$ [Fleischer 1999, Nagamochi and Nakao 2000]. Using our technique, we can even speed up the fastest randomized algorithm of [Karger and Panigrahi, SODA'2009] whose running time is at least $\Omega(m\log^4 n)$ to $O(m\log^3 n)$.

On 1-skeleton of the cut polytopes

Abstract:Given an undirected graph $G = (V,E)$, the cut polytope $\mathrm{CUT}(G)$ is defined as the convex hull of the incidence vectors of all cuts in $G$. The 1-skeleton of $\mathrm{CUT}(G)$ is a graph whose vertex set is the vertex set of the polytope, and the edge set is the set of geometric edges or one-dimensional faces of the polytope. We study the diameter and the clique number of 1-skeleton of cut polytopes for several classes of graphs. These characteristics are of interest since they estimate the computational complexity of the max-cut problem for certain computational models and classes of algorithms. It is established that while the diameter of the 1-skeleton of a cut polytope does not exceed $|V|-1$ for any connected graph, the clique number varies significantly depending on the class of graphs. For trees, cacti, and almost trees (2), the clique number is linear in the dimension, whereas for complete bipartite and $k$-partite graphs, it is superpolynomial.

Tight Lower Bounds for Directed Cut Sparsification and Distributed Min-Cut

Abstract:In this paper, we consider two fundamental cut approximation problems on large graphs. We prove new lower bounds for both problems that are optimal up to logarithmic factors. The first problem is to approximate cuts in balanced directed graphs. In this problem, the goal is to build a data structure that $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-approximates cut values in graphs with $n$ vertices. For arbitrary directed graphs, such a data structure requires $\Omega(n^2)$ bits even for constant $\epsilon$. To circumvent this, recent works study $\beta$-balanced graphs, meaning that for every directed cut, the total weight of edges in one direction is at most $\beta$ times that in the other direction. We consider two models: the {\em for-each} model, where the goal is to approximate each cut with constant probability, and the {\em for-all} model, where all cuts must be preserved simultaneously. We improve the previous $\Omega(n \sqrt{\beta/\epsilon})$ lower bound to $\tilde{\Omega}(n \sqrt{\beta}/\epsilon)$ in the for-each model, and we improve the previous $\Omega(n \beta/\epsilon)$ lower bound to $\Omega(n \beta/\epsilon^2)$ in the for-all model. This resolves the main open questions of (Cen et al., ICALP, 2021). The second problem is to approximate the global minimum cut in a local query model, where we can only access the graph via degree, edge, and adjacency queries. We improve the previous $\Omega\bigl(\frac{m}{k}\bigr)$ query complexity lower bound to $\Omega\bigl(\min\{m, \frac{m}{\epsilon^2 k}\}\bigr)$ for this problem, where $m$ is the number of edges, $k$ is the size of the minimum cut, and we seek a $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation. In addition, we show that existing upper bounds with slight modifications match our lower bound up to logarithmic factors.

Abstract:We consider the Minimum Steiner Cut problem on undirected planar graphs with non-negative edge weights. This problem involves finding the minimum cut of the graph that separates a specified subset $X$ of vertices (terminals) into two parts. This problem is of theoretical interest because it generalizes two classical optimization problems, Minimum $s$-$t$ Cut and Minimum Cut, and of practical importance because of its application to computing a lower bound for Steiner (Subset) TSP. Our algorithm has running time $O(n\log{n}\log{k})$ where $k$ is the number of terminals.

Cuts in Graphs with Matroid Constraints

Abstract:{\sc Vertex $(s, t)$-Cut} and {\sc Vertex Multiway Cut} are two fundamental graph separation problems in algorithmic graph theory. We study matroidal generalizations of these problems, where in addition to the usual input, we are given a representation $R \in \mathbb{F}^{r \times n}$ of a linear matroid $\mathcal{M} = (V(G), \mathcal{I})$ of rank $r$ in the input, and the goal is to determine whether there exists a vertex subset $S \subseteq V(G)$ that has the required cut properties, as well as is independent in the matroid $\mathcal{M}$. We refer to these problems as {\sc Independent Vertex $(s, t)$-cut}, and {\sc Independent Multiway Cut}, respectively. We show that these problems are fixed-parameter tractable ({\sf FPT}) when parameterized by the solution size (which can be assumed to be equal to the rank of the matroid $\mathcal{M}$). These results are obtained by exploiting the recent technique of flow augmentation [Kim et al.~STOC '22], combined with a dynamic programming algorithm on flow-paths á la [Feige and Mahdian,~STOC '06] that maintains a representative family of solutions w.r.t.~the given matroid [Marx, TCS '06; Fomin et al., JACM]. As a corollary, we also obtain {\sf FPT} algorithms for the independent version of {\sc Odd Cycle Transversal}. Further, our results can be generalized to other variants of the problems, e.g., weighted versions, or edge-deletion versions.

Abstract:Graph cuts are among the most prominent tools for clustering and classification analysis. While intensively studied from geometric and algorithmic perspectives, graph cut-based statistical inference still remains elusive to a certain extent. Distributional limits are fundamental in understanding and designing such statistical procedures on randomly sampled data. We provide explicit limiting distributions for balanced graph cuts in general on a fixed but arbitrary discretization. In particular, we show that Minimum Cut, Ratio Cut and Normalized Cut behave asymptotically as the minimum of Gaussians as sample size increases. Interestingly, our results reveal a dichotomy for Cheeger Cut: The limiting distribution of the optimal objective value is the minimum of Gaussians only when the optimal partition yields two sets of unequal volumes, while otherwise the limiting distribution is the minimum of a random mixture of Gaussians. Further, we show the bootstrap consistency for all types of graph cuts by utilizing the directional differentiability of cut functionals. We validate these theoretical findings by Monte Carlo experiments, and examine differences between the cuts and the dependency on the underlying distribution. Additionally, we expand our theoretical findings to the Xist algorithm, a computational surrogate of graph cuts recently proposed in Suchan, Li and Munk (arXiv, 2023), thus demonstrating the practical applicability of our findings e.g. in statistical tests.

Abstract:The minimum 3-way cut problem in an edge-weighted hypergraph is to find a partition of the vertices into 3 sets minimizing the total weight of hyperedges with at least two endpoints in two different sets. In this paper we present some structural properties for minimum 3-way cuts and design an O ( dmn 3 ) algorithm for the minimum 3-way cut problem in hypergraphs, where n and m are the numbers of vertices and edges respectively, and d is the sum of the degrees of all the vertices. Our algorithm is the first deterministic algorithm finding minimum 3-way cuts in hypergraphs.
Minimum+1 Steiner Cuts and Dual Edge Sensitivity Oracle: Bridging the Gap between Global cut and (s,t)-cut

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be an undirected multi-graph on $n=|V|$ vertices and $S\subseteq V$ be a Steiner set. Steiner cut is a fundamental concept; moreover, global cut $(|S|=n)$, as well as (s,t)-cut $(|S|=2)$, is just a special case of Steiner cut. We study Steiner cuts of capacity minimum+1, and as an important application, we provide a dual edge Sensitivity Oracle for Steiner mincut. A compact data structure for cuts of capacity minimum+1 has been designed for both global cuts [STOC 1995] and (s,t)-cuts [TALG 2023]. Moreover, both data structures are also used crucially to design a dual edge Sensitivity Oracle for their respective mincuts. Unfortunately, except for these two extreme scenarios of Steiner cuts, no generalization of these results is known. Therefore, to address this gap, we present the following first results on Steiner cuts. 1. Data Structure: There is an $O(n(n-|S|+1))$ space data structure that can determine in $O(1)$ time whether a given pair of vertices is separated by a Steiner cut of capacity at least minimum+1. It can report such a cut, if it exists, in $O(n)$ time. 2. Sensitivity Oracle: (a) There is an $O(n(n-|S|+1))$ space data structure that, after the failure/insertion of any pair of edges, can report the capacity of Steiner mincut in $O(1)$ time and a Steiner mincut in $O(n)$ time. (b) If we are interested in reporting only the capacity, there is a more compact data structure that occupies $O((n-|S|)^2+n)$ space and reports the capacity in $O(1)$ time after the failure/insertion of any pair of edges. 3. Lower Bound: For undirected multi-graphs, for every Steiner set $S$, any data structure that, after the failure or insertion of any pair of edges, can report the capacity of Steiner mincut must occupy $\Omega((n-|S|)^2)$ bits of space, irrespective of the query time.
