Abstract:The Lane-Emden inequality controls $\iint_{\mathbb{R}^{2d}}\rho(x)\rho(y)|x-y|^{-\lambda}\,dx\,dy$ in terms of the $L^1$ and $L^p$ norms of $\rho$. We provide a remainder estimate for this inequality in terms of a suitable distance of $\rho$ to the manifold of optimizers.

Abstract: We study the Lane-Emden system $$\begin{cases} -\Delta u=v^p,\quad u>0,\quad\text{in}~\Omega, -\Delta v=u^q,\quad v>0,\quad\text{in}~\Omega, u=v=0,\quad\text{on}~\partial\Omega, \end{cases}$$ where $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth bounded domain. In a recent work, we studied the concentration phenomena of positive solutions as $p,q\to+\infty$ and $|q-p|\leq \Lambda$. In this paper, we obtain sharp estimates of such multi-bubble solutions, including sharp convergence rates of local maxima and scaling parameters, and accurate approximations of solutions. As an application of these sharp estimates, we show that when $\Omega$ is convex, then the solution of this system is unique and nondegenerate for large $p, q$.
Eigenvalue estimates and maximum principle for Lane-Emden systems, and applications to poly-Laplacian equations

Abstract:This paper deals with explicit upper and lower bounds for principal eigenvalues and the maximum principle associated to generalized Lane-Emden systems (GLE systems, for short). Regarding the bounds, we generalize the upper estimate of Berestycki, Nirenberg and Varadhan [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1994), 47-92] for the first eigenvalue of linear scalar problems on general domains to the case of strongly coupled GLE systems with $m \geqslant 2$ equations on smooth domains. The explicit lower estimate we obtain is also used to derive a maximum principle to GLE systems relying in terms of quantitative ingredients. Furthermore, as applications of the previous results, upper and lower estimates for the first eigenvalue of weighted poly-Laplacian eigenvalue problems with $L^p$ weights $(p>n)$ and Navier boundary condition are obtained. Moreover, a strong maximum principle depending on the domain and the weight function for scalar problems involving the poly-Laplacian operator is also established.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate existence and qualitative properties of globally defined and positive radial solutions of the Lane-Emden system, posed on a Cartan-Hadamard model manifold $ {{\mathbb{M}}}^{n} $. We prove that, for critical or supercritical exponents, there exists at least a one-parameter family of such solutions. Depending on the stochastic completeness or incompleteness of $ {{\mathbb{M}}}^{n} $, we show that the existence region stays one dimensional in the former case, whereas it becomes two dimensional in the latter. Then, we study the asymptotics at infinity of solutions, which again exhibit a dichotomous behavior between the stochastically complete (where both components are forced to vanish) and incomplete cases. Finally, we prove a rigidity result for finite-energy solutions, showing that they exist if and only if is isometric to $ {\mathbb{R}}^{n} $.

Abstract:We consider the Lane-Emden system-$\Delta$u = |v| p-1 v,-$\Delta$v = |u| q-1 u in R d. When p $\ge$ q $\ge$ 1, it is known that there exists a positive radial stable solution (u, v) $\in$ C 2 (R d) if and only if d $\ge$ 11 and (p, q) lies on or above the so-called Joseph-Lundgren curve introduced in [5]. In this paper, we prove that for d $\le$ 10, there is no positive stable solution (or merely stable outside a compact set and (p, q) does not lie on the critical Sobolev hyperbola), while for d $\ge$ 11, the Joseph-Lundgren curve is indeed the dividing line for the existence of such solutions, if one assumes in addition that they are asymptotically homogeneous (see Definition 1 below). Most of our results are optimal improvements of previous works in the litterature.

Abstract:We study degenerate quasilinear elliptic equations on Riemannian manifolds and obtain several Liouville theorems. Notably, we provide rigorous proof asserting the nonexistence of positive solutions to the subcritical Lane-Emden-Fowler equations over complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. These findings serve as a significant generalization of Gidas and Spruck's pivotal work (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 34, 525-598, 1981) which focused on the semilinear case, as well as Serrin and Zou's contributions (Acta Math. 189, 79-142, 2002) within the context of Euclidean geometries.

Abstract: Consider the Lane-Emden system $$\bcs -\Delta u=v^p,\quad u>0,\quad\text{in}~\Omega, -\Delta v=u^q,\quad v>0,\quad\text{in}~\Omega, u=v=0,\quad\text{on}~\pa\Omega, \ecs$$ where $\Omega$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\geq 2$ and $q\ge p>0$. The asymptotic behavior of {\it least energy solutions} of this system was studied in \cite{asy3-1,asy3-2} for $N\geq 3$. However, the case $N=2$ is different and remains completely open. In this paper, we study the case $N=2$ with $q=p+\q_p$ and $\sup_p\q_p<+\infty$. Under the following natural condition that holds for least energy solutions $$\limsup_{p\to+\infty} p\int_\Omega\nabla u_p\cdot\nabla v_p \rd x<+\infty,$$ we give a complete description of the asymptotic behavior of {\it positive solutions} $(u_p,v_p)$ (i.e., not only for least energy solutions) as $p\to+\iy$. This seems the first result for asymptotic behaviors of the Lane-Emden system in the two dimension case.

Abstract:We establish a general identity (Theorem 1.2) that implies both the $L^{p}$-Hardy identities and the $L^{p}$-Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg identities (Theorems 1.3 and 1.4) and $L^{p}$-Hardy inequalities and the $L^{p}$-Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities (Theorems 1.5 and 1.6)). Weighted $L^{p}$-Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities with nonradial weights are also obtained. (Theorem 1.7). Our results provide simple interpretations to the sharp constants, as well as the existence and non-existence of the optimizers, of several $L^{p}$-Hardy and $L^{p}% $-Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities. As applications of our main results, we are able to establish stabilities of a class of $L^{2}$ and $L^{p}% $-Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities. (Theorems 1.8 and 1.9.) We also derive the best constants and explicit extremal functions for a large family of $L^{2}$ and $L^{p}$ Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities. (Corollaries 1.1 and 1.2.)

Abstract:In this paper, we establish uniform a priori estimates for positive solutions to the (higher) critical order superlinear Lane–Emden system in bounded domains with Navier boundary conditions in arbitrary dimensions . First, we prove the monotonicity of solutions for odd order (higher order fractional system) and even order system (integer order system) respectively along the inward normal direction near the boundary by the method of moving planes. Then we derive uniform a priori estimates by establishing the precise relationships between the maxima of u , v , and through the Harnack inequality. Our results extended the uniform a priori estimates for critical order problems in Kamburov and Sirakov (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 57:8, 2018), Kamburov and Sirakov (Uniform a priori estimates for positive solutions of the Lane-Emden system in the plane, arXiv:2205.02587, 2022) from to higher dimensions and in Chen and Wu (Calc Var Partial Differ Equs 60:19, 2021), Clément et al. (Comm Partial Diff Equ 17:923–940, 1992) from one single equation to system. With such a priori estimates, one will be able to obtain the existence of solutions via topological degree theory or a continuation argument.

Expanding solutions near unstable Lane-Emden stars

Abstract:We consider the compressible Euler-Poisson equations for polytropes $P(\rho)=K\rho^{\gamma}$ with $\gamma\in \left(\frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3} \right]$ and the white dwarf stars. For $\gamma=\frac{4}{3},$ we show that there exists a global weak solution for the spherically symmetric initial data with mass less than the mass of the Lane-Emden stars (i.e. non-rotating polytropes). For $\gamma\in \left(\frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3} \right)$, we show the existence of global weak solution for spherical symmetric initial data in an invariant set containing a neighborhood of Lane-Emden stars. Moreover, the support of these solution expands to infinity. As a corollary, this proves the strong instability of the Lane-Emden stars for $\gamma\in \left( \frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3}\right] $. For $\gamma\in \left(\frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3} \right),$ our results provide the first example of expanding solutions. For white dwarf stars, we prove that the solution cannot collapse if the mass of initial data is less than the Chandrasekhar limit mass, which is the supremum of the mass of the non-rotating white dwarf stars. Our proof strongly uses the variational characterization of the Lane-Emden stars. First, we relate the best constant of a Hardy-Littlewood type inequality with the mass of the Lane-Emden stars with $\gamma=\frac{4}{3}$, which is further shown to equal the Chandrasekhar limit mass. For $\gamma\in\left( \frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3}\right) $, we show that the Lane-Emden stars are minimizers of an energy-mass functional subject to a Pohozaev type constraint. This is crucial in the construction of the invariant set of expanding solutions.

We believe that the various new ideas and technique computations that we used in this paper would be very useful to deal with other related problems involving critical Halmitonian system and the construction of new solutions.

Abstract:Linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are ubiquitous in modern control theory, as well as in a variety of other fields in science and engineering. Their analytic centers, i.e. the maximum determinant elements of the feasible set spanned by these LMIs, are the solution of many well-known problems in statistics, communications, geometry, and control and can be approximated to arbitrary precision by semidefinite programs (SDPs). The quality of these approximations is measured with respect to the difference in log-determinant of both the exact and the approximate solution to these SDPs, a quantity that follows directly from the duality theory of semidefinite programming. However, in many applications the relevant parameters are functions of the entries of the LMI argument $X$. In these cases it is of interest to develop metrics that quantify the quality of approximate solutions based on the error on these parameters, something that the log-determinant error fails to capture due to the non-linear interaction of all the matrix entries. In this work we develop upper bounds on the Frobenius norm error between suboptimal solutions $X_f$ and the exact optimizer $X_*$ of maximum determinant problems, a metric that provides a direct translation to the entry-wise error of $X$ and thus to the relevant parameters of the application. We show that these bounds can be expressed through the use of the Lambert function $W(x)$, i.e. the solution of the equation $W(x) e^{W(x)}= x$, and derive novel bounds for one of its branches to generate efficient closed-form bounds on the Euclidean distance to the LMI analytic center. Finally, we test the quality of these bounds numerically in the context of interior point methods termination criteria.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the critical order Hénon-Lane-Emden type equations with Navier boundary condition on a half space $\mathbb{R}^n_+$: \begin{equation}\label{NPDE0}\\\begin{cases} (-\Delta)^{\frac{n}{2}} u(x)=f(x,u(x)),\ u(x)\geq0,\ x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}_+, \\ u=(-\Delta)u = \cdots = (-\Delta)^{\frac{n}{2}-1}u = 0,\ x\in\partial\mathbb{R}^{n}_+, \end{cases}\end{equation} where $u\in C^{n}(\mathbb{R}^{n}_+)\cap C^{n-2}(\overline{\mathbb{R}^{n}_+})$ and $n\geq2$ is even. We first consider the typical case $f(x,u)=|x|^{a}u^{p}$ with $0\leq a<\infty$ and $1<p<\infty$. We prove the super poly-harmonic properties and establish the equivalence between (0.1) and the corresponding integral equations \begin{equation}\label{IE0} u(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}_+}G(x,y)f(y,u(y))dy, \end{equation} where $G(x,y)$ denotes the Green's function for $(-\Delta)^{\frac{n}{2}}$ on $\mathbb{R}^n_+$ with Navier boundary conditions. Then, we establish Liouville theorem for (0.2) via ``the method of scaling spheres" developed initially in \cite{DQ0} by Dai and Qin, and hence we obtain the Liouville theorem for (0.1) on $\mathbb{R}^n_+$. As an application of the Liouville theorem on $\mathbb{R}^n_+$ (Theorem 1.6) and Liouville theorems in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ established in Chen, Dai and Qin [4] for $n\geq4$ and Bidaut-Véron and Giacomini [1] for $n=2$, we derive a priori estimates and existence of positive solutions to critical order Lane-Emden equations in bounded domains for all $n\geq2$ and $1<p<\infty$. Extensions to IEs and PDEs with general nonlinearities $f(x,u)$ are also included.

Abstract:We consider the Lane-Emden problem on planar domains. When the exponent is large, the existence and multiplicity of solutions strongly depend on the geometric properties of the domain, which also deeply affect their qualitative behavior. Remarkably, a wide variety of solutions, both positive and sign-changing, have been found when the exponent is sufficiently large. In this paper, we focus on this topic and fine new sign-changing solutions that exhibit an unexpected concentration phenomenon as the exponent approaches infinity.
