Abstract:Hipparchus is considered the greatest astronomer of antiquity. However, his fame is due, more than to what he has done, or said, or written, to what the scientists of some generation or of a few cen-turies later have written of him: above all Ptolemy. The obvious discrepancy between the declared period and the real one of the stellar catalogue of the Almagest has led to the belief that the cata-logue was in reality made by Hipparchus. This factor has contributed greatly to increase his fame, to the detriment of the one of Ptolemy. However, the only work of Hipparchus that we have re-ceived, Commentaries on Aratus and Eudoxus phenomena, has never been analyzed with the nec-essary accuracy so far. Such an examination, which is carried out here for the first time, reveals a very different scientist from the one represented by orthodox historiography and is intended as an attempt to avoid the continuation of a singular error, that of judging the value of a scholar not by the existing parts of his work, but only by those that are missing.

The genesis of Hippachus' celestial globe

Abstract:This paper summarises briefly and in English some of the results of the book Hoffmann: Hipparchs Himmelsglobus, Springer, 2017 that had to be written in German. The globe of Hipparchus is not preserved. For that reason, it has been a source of much speculation and scientific inquiry during the last few centuries. This study presents a new analysis of the data given in the commentary on Aratus' poem by Hipparchus, in comparison with other contemporary Babylonian and Greek astronomical data, as well as their predecessors in the first millennium and their successors up to Ptolemy. The result of all these studies are the following: i) although the data of Ptolemy and Hipparchus are undoubtedly correlated, it is certainly also wrong to accuse Ptolemy having simply copied and transformed it without correct citation; ii) although Hipparchus presumably observed most of his star catalogue with his own instruments, we cannot neglect Babylonian influences. Hipparchus was educated in Greek astronomy but, in his time, there are traces of Babylonian influences since at least two centuries. Since we are unable to definitely prove that Hipparchus used Babylonian data, we are not sure if there are direct Babylonian influences in his time or as a consequence of his education only. Finally, we present a virtual 3D-image showing what the globe of Hipparchus might have looked like.

Abstract:The uncertainty about the relationships between the star catalogue contained in the Almagest (books VII-VIII) and the catalogue of Hipparchus dates back to the origins of modern astronomy. The fact that Hipparchus' catalogue was lost and that his observations of a limited number of stars remained has favored the formulation of various hypotheses on the subject. The recent discovery of (at least) a part of Hipparchus' catalogue seems to indicate that there are various concordances between the two catalogues, but also differences sufficient to suggest that Ptolemy's catalogue also derives from sources independent of Hipparchus' catalogue. This article presents an additional element for the comparison between the two catalogues, based on the diversity of the observation locations of the two astronomers, which provides an argument against the originality of the Ptolemaic catalogue.

Abstract:Near the end of the 16th century Wilhelm IV, Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel, set up an observatory with the main goal to increase the accuracy of stellar positions primarily for use in astrology and for calendar purposes. A new star catalogue was compiled from measurements of altitudes and angles between stars and a print ready version was prepared listing measurements as well as equatorial and ecliptic coordinates of stellar positions. Unfortunately, this catalogue appeared in print not before 1666, long after the dissemination of Brahe's catalogue. With the data given in the manuscript we are able to analyze the accuracy of measurements and computations. The measurements and the computations are very accurate, thanks to the instrument maker and mathematician Jost Bürgi. The star catalogue is more accurate by a factor two than the later catalogue of Tycho Brahe.

Abstract:De Houtman in 1603, Kepler in 1627 and Halley in 1679 published the earliest modern catalogues of the southern sky. We provide machine-readable versions of these catalogues, make some comparisons between them, and briefly discuss their accuracy on the basis of comparison with data from the modern Hipparcos Catalogue. We also compare our results for De Houtman with those by Knobel (1917) finding good overall agreement. About half of the about 200 new stars (with respect to Ptolemaios) added by De Houtman are in twelve new constellations, half in old constellations like Centaurus, Lupus and Argo. The right ascensions and declinations given by De Houtman have error distributions with widths of about 40 arcmin, the longitudes and latitudes given by Kepler have error distributions with widths of about 45 arcmin. Halley improves on this by more than an order of magnitude to widths of about 3 arcmin, and all entries in his catalogue can be identified. The measurement errors of Halley are due to a systematic deviation of his sextant (increasing with angle to 2 arcmin at 60 degrees) and random errors of 0.7 arcmin. The position errors in the catalogue of Halley are dominated by the position errors in the reference stars, which he took from Brahe.

Abstract:A re-investigation of the parapegma of Euktemon (5th century BC, Athens), based on the assumption that some star observations may in fact have been calculated rather than directly observed. The calculation follows Pliny, Natural History 18.218, where he states that the sun should be at least three-quarters of an hour below the horizon. So 'observations' were based on time, rather than on star magnitude.

Abstract:The great development of astrometric accuracy since the observations by Hipparchus about 150 BC was documented in 2008 in the first version of the present report. This report was updated in Høg (2017d), e.g. with recent information on the catalogues before 1800 AD. The development has often been displayed in diagrams showing the accuracy versus time. A new simplified diagram is provided in the present report as Fig.2 and in a .png file and this information will presumably be the main interest for some readers.

Abstract:Astrometry, the most ancient branch of astronomy, was facing extinction during much of the 20th century in the competition with astrophysics. The revival of astrometry came with the European astrometry satellite Hipparcos, approved by ESA in 1980 and launched 1989. Photon-counting astrometry was the basic measuring technique in Hipparcos, a technique invented by the author in 1960 in Hamburg. The technique was implemented on the Repsold meridian circle for the Hamburg expedition to Perth in Western Australia where it worked well during 1967-72. This success paved the way for space astrometry, pioneered in France and implemented on Hipparcos. This report gives a detailed personal account of my life and work in Hamburg Bergedorf where I lived with my family half a century ago.

The Hypatia Catalog Database: A Web-Based Interface for Exploring Stellar Abundances

Abstract:The Hypatia Catalog Database (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.hypatiacatalog.com" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>) is the largest database of high resolution stellar abundances for stars within the solar neighborhood. It currently offers 72 elements and species within 5,986 stars, 347 of which host planets. The Hypatia Catalog Database features an interactive table and multiple plotting interfaces that allow easy access and exploration of stellar abundance data and properties within the Hypatia Catalog (Hinkel et al. 2014, 2016, 2017). The Hypatia Catalog is a multidimensional, amalgamate dataset comprised of stellar abundance measurements for FGKM-type stars within 150 pc of the Sun from carefully culled literature sources, currently totaling 161 datasets, that measured both [Fe/H] and at least one other element. In addition to abundances, stellar properties and planetary properties, where applicable, have been made available within the online Hypatia Catalog Database. Data and plots can also be downloaded through the website for use in personal code or presentations, respectively. The Hypatia Catalog and Hypatia Catalog Database will continue to be routinely updated in order to incorporate the most recent stellar abundance data published within the literature.

Abstract:This is the first translation of Hipparchus Commentaries on the Phenomena of Aratus and Eudoxus into a modern language since the one, in German, published by the philologist Karl Heinrich August Manitius in 1894. Published in 2013, it is now also available online. This is also the first detailed astronomical commentary on the work, produced with the support of Starry Night Pro Plus 8 software (very reliable for both precession and stellar proper motions), configured for the epochs and sites where Aratus, Eudoxus and Hipparchus worked. The translation is by Bruna Cusinato. The introduction and astronomical commentary are by Gabriele Vanin.

Abstract:Based on the catalogue data, it is presented an approach for modeling and simulating the celestial background observed in any time and at any places. All this can be done with the Hipparcos catalogue in the following way. First, with a series of time conversion, the star position data of the catalogue epoch is converted into the position data of the named time. Then, the star visional coordinate is converted into the observation coordinate, and the star visional position is achieved in accordance with the observe at the named time. Finally, the celestial background at various observing time and places can be rendered using the modeling result.

Two new diagrams are provided here, one for positions only, another including parallaxes. New information is included on the Gaia DR3 data and the coming data releases, and about two great astronomers from the distant past, Wilhelm in Kassel and al-Sufi in Isfahan.

Abstract:The Herschel Space Observatory was the fourth cornerstone mission in the European Space Agency (ESA) science programme with excellent broad band imaging capabilities in the sub-mm and far-infrared part of the spectrum. Although the spacecraft finished its observations in 2013, it left a large legacy dataset that is far from having been fully scrutinised and still has a large potential for new scientific discoveries. This is specifically true for the photometric observations of the PACS and SPIRE instruments. Some source catalogues have already been produced by individual observing programs, but there are many observations that risk to remain unexplored. To maximise the science return of the SPIRE and PACS data sets, we are in the process of building the Herschel Point Source Catalogue (HPSC) from all primary and parallel mode observations. Our homogeneous source extraction enables a systematic and unbiased comparison of sensitivity across the different Herschel fields that single programs will generally not be able to provide. The catalogue will be made available online through archives like the Herschel Science Archive (HSA), the Infrared Science Archive (IRSA), and the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center (CDS).

Abstract:Here follow three reports covering different aspects of the early history from 1964 to 1980 of the Hipparcos satellite mission. The first report "Interviews about the creation of Hipparcos" contains interviews from 2017 with scientists about how the mission was conceived up to the begin of technical development. The second report "From TYCHO to Hipparcos 1975 to 1979" is about the Hipparcos development based on new material from my archive. From my 65 years dedicated to the development of astrometry, I argue that very special historical circumstances in Europe were decisive for the idea of space astrometry to become reality: Hipparcos did not just come because astrophysicists needed the data. The third report "Miraculous 1980 for Hipparcos" documents how the approval of the astrometric mission in January 1980 in competition with an astrophysical mission was only achieved with very great difficulty, even after an outstanding astrophysicist had presented overwhelming arguments that the astrometric mission would be scientifically much more important.

Abstract:Did the papacy tacitly permit the circulation of an explicitly Copernican book in 1660? One scholar has recently argued that it did. A close analysis of a unique illustration from that book, Andreas Cellarius's atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica, illuminates this argument. This is because the illustration, a diagram showing the relative sizes of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, was among the material reviewed (at the request of the book's publisher) by the Holy Office prior to the book's publication and was pro-Copernican.

[On the astrology and computation in the 12th century: new unpublished manuscripts]

Abstract:This article examines three so far unknown lemmatic commentaries on computus and on astrolabe topics, which are to be found in MS Stuttgart, Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Cod. math. 4 degrees 33 (second half of the twelfth-century). The commentaries are on the 'Compotus' by Gerlandus, on the 'De mensura astrolabii' by Hermann of Reichenau, and on the 'De utilitatibus astrolabii', which is sometimes attributed to Gerbert of Aurillac. No commentaries on the respective treatises have previously been identified as such. The commentaries of the Stuttgart manuscript are of special interest in that they allow us to understand how a twelfth-century scholar read works on computus and the astrolabe, namely works that date back to the eleventh century. Their author remains anonymous, but in all probability he wrote his commentary on the 'Compotus' by Gerlandus either in 1143 or in 1150. An appendix to the article includes transcriptions of the introductory texts on the computus and on the astrolabe as well as the beginnings of the commentaries.

Abstract:The handed down latitudinal data ascribed to Eratosthenes and Hipparchus are composed and each tested for consistency by means of adjustment theory. For detected inconsistencies new explanations are given concerning the origin of the data. Several inconsistent data can be ascribed to Strabo. Differences in Hipparchus' data can often be explained by the different types and precision of the data. Gross errors in Eratosthenes' data are explained by their origination from the lengths of sea routes. From Eratosthenes' data concerning Thule a numerical value for Eratosthenes' obliquity of the ecliptic is deduced.

Abstract:Since the dawn of telescopic astronomy astronomers have observed and measured the "spurious" telescopic disks of stars, generally reporting that brighter stars have larger disks than fainter stars. Early observers such as Galileo Galilei interpreted these disks as being the physical bodies of stars; later observers such as William Herschel understood them to be spurious; some, such as Christian Huygens, argued that stars show no disks at all. In the early 19th century George B. Airy produced a theoretical explanation of star images sufficient to explain all historical observations, but astronomers were slow to fully recognize this. Even today conventional wisdom concerning stars and telescopes stands at odds to both historical observations and Airy's theory. We give a detailed analysis of both historical observations and Airy's theory, illustrating how Airy's theory explains the historical observations, from Galileo to Huygens to Herschel. We argue that the observations themselves appear in all cases to be valid and worth further study.

Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of the star atlas included in the medieval Chinese manuscript (Or.8210/S.3326), discovered in 1907 by the archaeologist Aurel Stein at the Silk Road town of Dunhuang and now held in the British Library. Although partially studied by a few Chinese scholars, it has never been fully displayed and discussed in the Western world. This set of sky maps (12 hour angle maps in quasi-cylindrical projection and a circumpolar map in azimuthal projection), displaying the full sky visible from the Northern hemisphere, is up to now the oldest complete preserved star atlas from any civilisation. It is also the first known pictorial representation of the quasi-totality of the Chinese constellations. This paper describes the history of the physical object - a roll of thin paper drawn with ink. We analyse the stellar content of each map (1339 stars, 257 asterisms) and the texts associated with the maps. We establish the precision with which the maps are drawn (1.5 to 4 degrees for the brightest stars) and examine the type of projections used. We conclude that precise mathematical methods were used to produce the atlas. We also discuss the dating of the manuscript and its possible author and confirm the dates 649-684 (early Tang dynasty) as most probable based on available evidence. This is at variance with a prior estimate around +940. Finally we present a brief comparison with later sky maps, both in China and in Europe.
