Abstract:We develop a method initiated by Bacher and Venkov, and based on a study of the Kneser neighbors of the standard lattice Z^n, which allows to classify the integral unimodular Euclidean lattices of rank n. As an application, of computational flavour, we determine the isometry classes of unimodular lattices of rank 26 and 27.

Abstract:Narain lattices are unimodular lattices {\it in} $\R^{r,s}$, subject to certain natural equivalence relation and rationality condition. The problem of describing and counting these rational equivalence classes of Narain lattices in $\R^{2,2}$ has led to an interesting connection to binary forms and their Gauss products, as shown in [HLOYII]. As a sequel, in this paper, we study arbitrary rational Narain lattices and generalize some of our earlier results. In particular in the case of $\R^{2,2}$, a new interpretation of the Gauss product of binary forms brings new light to a number of related objects -- rank 4 rational Narain lattices, over-lattices, rank 2 primitive sublattices of an abstract rank 4 even unimodular lattice $U^2$, and isomorphisms of discriminant groups of rank 2 lattices.

Abstract:A collection of vectors in a real vector space is called a unimodular system if any of its maximal linearly independent subsets generates the same free abelian group. This notion is closely connected with totally unimodular matrices: rows or columns of a totally unimodular matrix form a unimodular system and the matrix of coefficients of expansions of all vectors of a unimodular system with respect to its maximal linearly independent subset is totally unimodular. In this paper we show that a unimodular system defines the following geometric data: a Euclidean space, an integral lattice in it, and a reflexive lattice zonotope. The discriminant of the lattice is equal to the number of maximal linearly independent subsystems, and we call this number the complexity of the unimodular system. For a unimodular system $\Omega $ we also define the Gale dual unimodular system $\Omega ^{\bot}$ which has the same complexity. These notions may be illustrated by the well-known graphic and cographic unimodular systems of a graph. Both graphic and cographic unimodular systems have the same complexity which is equal to the complexity of the graph. For graphs without loops and bridges the graphic and the cographic unimodular systems are Gale dual to each other. We describe this geometric data for certain examples: for the graphic and the cographic unimodular systems of a generalized theta-graph, consisting of two vertices connected by $N$ edges, for the cographic system of the complete graph $K_N$, and for the famous Bixby-Seymour unimodular system, which is neither graphic nor cographic.

Unimodular polytopes and a new Heller-type bound on totally unimodular matrices via Seymour's decomposition theorem

Abstract:We prove a sharp upper bound on the number of columns of a totally unimodular matrix with column sums $1$ which improves upon Heller's bound by a factor of $2$. The proof uses Seymour's decomposition theorem. Unimodular polytopes are lattice polytopes such that the vertices of every full-dimensional subsimplex form an affine lattice basis. This is a subclass of 0/1-polytopes and contains for instance edge polytopes of bipartite graphs. Our main result implies a sharp upper bound on the number of vertices of unimodular polytopes.

Abstract:In recent decades, the use of ideas from Minkowski's Geometry of Numbers has gained recognition as a helpful tool in bounding the number of solutions to modular congruences with variables from short intervals. In 1941, Mahler introduced an analogue to the Geometry of Numbers in function fields over finite fields. Here, we build on Mahler's ideas and develop results useful for bounding the sizes of intersections of lattices and convex bodies in $\mathbb{F}_q((1/T))^d$, which are more precise than what is known over $\mathbb{R}^d$. These results are then applied to various problems regarding bounding the number of solutions to congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, such as the number of points on polynomial curves in low dimensional subspaces of finite fields. Our results improve on a number of previous bounds due to Bagshaw, Cilleruelo, Shparlinski and Zumalacárregui. We also present previous techniques developed by various authors for estimating certain energy/point counts in a unified manner.

Abstract:We establish an upper bound on the number of real multiquadratic fields that admit a universal quadratic lattice of a given rank, or contain a given amount of indecomposable elements modulo totally positive units, obtaining density zero statements. We also study the structure of indecomposable elements in real biquadratic fields, and compute a system of indecomposable elements modulo totally positive units for some families of real biquadratic fields.

Abstract:Under hypotheses required for the Taylor-Wiles method, we prove for forms of $U(3)$ which are compact at infinity that the lattice structure on upper alcove algebraic vectors or on principal series types given by the $\lambda$-isotypic part of completed cohomology is a local invariant of the Galois representation attached to $\lambda$ when this Galois representation is residually irreducible locally at places dividing $p$. As a crucial input, we establish corresponding mod $p$ multiplicity one results. Our main innovation is the combination of integral Hecke theory and the Taylor--Wiles method.

Abstract:In this note, we investigate the representation type of the cambrian lattices and some other related lattices. The result is expressed as a very simple trichotomy. When the rank of the underlined Coxeter group is at most 2, the lattices are of finite representation type. When the Coxeter group is a reducible group of type A13\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}${\mathbb {A}_{1}^{3}}$\end{document}, the lattices are of tame representation type. In all the other cases they are of wild representation type.

Abstract:Fix a simply-laced semisimple Lie algebra. We study the crystal $ B(n\lambda)$, were $\lambda$ is a dominant minuscule weight and $n$ is a natural number. On one hand, $B(n\lambda)$ can be realized combinatorially by height $n$ reverse plane partitions on a heap associated to $\lambda$. On the other hand, we use this heap to define a module over the preprojective algebra of the underlying Dynkin quiver. Using the work of Saito and Savage-Tingley, we realize $B(n\lambda)$ via irreducible components of the quiver Grassmannian of $n$ copies of this module. In this paper, we describe an explicit bijection between these two models for $B(n\lambda)$ and prove that our bijection yields an isomorphism of crystals. Our main geometric tool is Nakajima's tensor product quiver varieties.

Abstract:We work out the exact relationship between algebraic modular forms for a two-by-two general unitary group over a definite quaternion algebra, and those arising from genera of positive-definite quinary lattices, relating stabilisers of local lattices with specific open compact subgroups, paramodular at split places, and with Atkin-Lehner operators. Combining this with the recent work of Rösner and Weissauer, proving conjectures of Ibukiyama on Jacquet-Langlands type correspondences (mildly generalised here), provides an effective tool for computing Hecke eigenvalues for Siegel modular forms of degree two and paramodular level. It also enables us to prove examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues connecting Siegel modular forms of degrees two and one. These include some of a type conjectured by Harder at level one, supported by computations of Fretwell at higher levels, and a subtly different congruence discovered experimentally by Buzzard and Golyshev.

Thin Simplices via Modular Arithmetic

Abstract:The local $h^*$-polynomial is a natural invariant of a lattice polytope appearing in Ehrhart theory and Hodge theory. In this work, we study the question posed in [GKZ94] concerning the classification of lattice simplices with vanishing local $h^*$-polynomial. Such simplices are called thin. We relate this question to linear codes and hyperplane arrangements over finite rings. This allows us to obtain a complete classification of the $4$-dimensional thin simplices, extending the previously known results in dimensions up to $3$.

Abstract:We study algebras of meromorphic modular forms whose poles lie on Heegner divisors for orthogonal and unitary groups associated to root lattices. We give a uniform construction of $147$ hyperplane arrangements on type IV symmetric domains for which the algebras of modular forms with constrained poles are free and therefore the Looijenga compactifications of the arrangement complements are weighted projective spaces. We also construct $8$ free algebras of modular forms on complex balls with poles on hyperplane arrangements. The most striking example is the discriminant kernel of the $2U\oplus D_{11}$ lattice, which admits a free algebra on $14$ meromorphic generators. Along the way, we determine minimal systems of generators for non-free algebras of orthogonal modular forms for $26$ reducible root lattices and prove the modularity of formal Fourier--Jacobi series associated to them. By exploiting an identity between weight one singular additive and multiplicative lifts on $2U\oplus D_{11}$, we prove that the additive lift of any (possibly weak) theta block of positive weight and $q$-order one is a Borcherds product; the special case of holomorphic theta blocks of one elliptic variable is the theta block conjecture of Gritsenko, Poor and Yuen.

Classification of modular data up to rank 11

Abstract:We use the computer algebraic system GAP to classify modular data up to rank 11, and integral modular data up to rank 12. This extends the previously obtained classification of modular data up to rank 6. Our classification includes all the modular data from modular tensor categories up to rank 11. But our list also contains a few potential unitary modular data at ranks 9, 10 and 11, which are not known to correspond to any unitary modular tensor categories (such as those from Kac-Moody algebra, twisted quantum doubles of finite group, as well as their Abelian anyon condensations). It remains to be shown if those potential modular data can be realized by modular tensor categories or not, although we provide some evidence that all but one may be constructed from centers of near-group categories. The classification of modular data corresponds to a classification of modular tensor categories (up to modular isotopes which are not expected to be present at low ranks). The classification of modular tensor categories leads to a classification of gapped quantum phases of matter in 2-dimensional space for bosonic lattice systems with no symmetry, as well as a classification of generalized symmetries in 1-dimensional space.

On the nonconnectedness of moduli spaces of arrangements, II: construction of nonarithmetic pairs

Abstract:Constructing lattice isomorphic line arrangements that are not lattice isotopic is a complex yet fundamental task. In this paper, we focus on such pairs but which are not Galois conjugated, referred to as nonarithmetic pairs. Splitting polygons have been introduced by the author to facilitate the construction of lattice isomorphic arrangements that are not lattice isotopic. Exploiting this structure, we develop two algorithms which produce nonarithmetic pairs: the first generates pairs over a number field, while the second yields pairs over the rationals. Moreover, explicit applications of these algorithms are presented, including one complex, one real, and one rational nonarithmetic pair.

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.

S-Glued sums of lattices

Abstract:For many equation-theoretical questions about modular lattices, Hall and Dilworth give a useful construction: Let $L_0$ be a lattice with largest element $u_0$, $L_1$ be a lattice disjoint from $L_0$ with smallest element $v_1$, and $a \in L_0$, $b \in L_1$ such that the intervals $[a, u_0]$ and $[v_1, b]$ are isomorphic. Then, after identifying those intervals you obtain $L_0 \cup L_1$, a lattice structure whose partial order is the transitive relation generated by the partial orders of $L_0$ and $L_1$. It is modular if $L_0$ and $L_1$ are modular. Since in this construction the index set $\{0, 1\}$ is essentially a chain, this work presents a method -- termed S-glued -- whereby a general family $L_x\ (x \in S)$ of lattices can specify a lattice with the small-scale lattice structure determined by the $L_x$ and the large-scale structure determined by $S$. A crucial application is representing finite-length modular lattices using projective geometries.

Buser and Sarnak proved the analogue of this result in the context of complex abelian varieties. Here we give an improvement of this analogue; this shows a conjecture of Muetzel.

Abstract:Let $q\geq2$ be a prime power and consider Drinfeld modules of rank 2 over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We prove that there are no points with coordinates being Drinfeld singular moduli, on a family of hyperbolas $XY=\gamma$, where $\gamma$ is a polynomial of small degree. This is an effective André-Oort theorem for these curves. We also prove that there are at most finitely many Drinfeld singular moduli that are algebraic units, for every fixed $q\geq2$, and we give an effective bound on the discriminant of such singular moduli. We give in an appendix an inseparability criterion for values of some classical modular forms, generalising an argument used in the proof of our first result.
