It shows how to compute this rate for positive linear systems, and it interprets antifragility in terms of pulsed alternations of extreme strategies in comparison to average uniform strategies.

Abstract:Antifragility characterizes the benefit of a dynamical system derived from the variability in environmental perturbations. Antifragility carries a precise definition that quantifies a system's output response to input variability. Systems may respond poorly to perturbations (fragile) or benefit from perturbations (antifragile). In this manuscript, we review a range of applications of antifragility theory in technical systems (e.g., traffic control, robotics) and natural systems (e.g., cancer therapy, antibiotics). While there is a broad overlap in methods used to quantify and apply antifragility across disciplines, there is a need for precisely defining the scales at which antifragility operates. Thus, we provide a brief general introduction to the properties of antifragility in applied systems and review relevant literature for both natural and technical systems' antifragility. We frame this review within three scales common to technical systems: intrinsic (input-output nonlinearity), inherited (extrinsic environmental signals), and interventional (feedback control), with associated counterparts in biological systems: ecological (homogeneous systems), evolutionary (heterogeneous systems), and interventional (control). We use the common noun in designing systems that exhibit antifragile behavior across scales and guide the reader along the spectrum of fragility-adaptiveness-resilience-robustness-antifragility, the principles behind it, and its practical implications.

Here we define and test a simple measure of antifragility for complex dynamical systems. In this work we use our antifragility measure to analyze real data from return prices in the stock and cryptocurrency markets. Our definition of antifragility is the product of the return price and a perturbation. We explore different types of perturbations that typically arise from within the system. Our results suggest that for both the stock market and the cryptocurrency market, the tendency among the 'top performers' is to be robust rather than antifragile. It would be important to explore other possible definitions of antifragility to understand its role in financial markets and in complex dynamical systems in general.

Abstract:Antifragility is a property that enhances the capability of a system in response to external perturbations. Although the concept has been applied in many areas, a practical measure of antifragility has not been developed yet. Here we propose a simply calculable measure of antifragility, based on the change of "satisfaction" before and after adding perturbations, and apply it to random Boolean networks (RBNs). Using the measure, we found that ordered RBNs are the most antifragile. Also, we demonstrated that seven biological systems are antifragile. Our measure and results can be used in various applications of Boolean networks (BNs) including creating antifragile engineering systems, identifying the genetic mechanism of antifragile biological systems, and developing new treatment strategies for various diseases.

Abstract:Several recent works in online optimization and game dynamics have established strong negative complexity results including the formal emergence of instability and chaos even in small such settings, e.g., $2\times 2$ games. These results motivate the following question: Which methodological tools can guarantee the regularity of such dynamics and how can we apply them in standard settings of interest such as discrete-time first-order optimization dynamics? We show how proving the existence of invariant functions, i.e., constant of motions, is a fundamental contribution in this direction and establish a plethora of such positive results (e.g. gradient descent, multiplicative weights update, alternating gradient descent and manifold gradient descent) both in optimization as well as in game settings. At a technical level, for some conservation laws we provide an explicit and concise closed form, whereas for other ones we present non-constructive proofs using tools from dynamical systems.

Abstract:Most models of complex systems have been homogeneous, i.e., all elements have the same properties (spatial, temporal, structural, functional). However, most natural systems are heterogeneous: few elements are more relevant, larger, stronger, or faster than others. In homogeneous systems, criticality-a balance between change and stability, order and chaos-is usually found for a very narrow region in the parameter space, close to a phase transition. Using random Boolean networks-a general model of discrete dynamical systems-we show that heterogeneity-in time, structure, and function-can broaden additively the parameter region where criticality is found. Moreover, parameter regions where antifragility is found are also increased with heterogeneity. However, maximum antifragility is found for particular parameters in homogeneous networks. Our work suggests that the "optimal" balance between homogeneity and heterogeneity is non-trivial, context-dependent, and in some cases, dynamic.

Abstract:I present a simple numerical model based on iteratively updating subgroups of a population, individually modeled by nonnegative real numbers, by a constant decay factor; however, at each iteration, one group is selected to instead be updated by a constant growth factor. I discover a relationship between these variables and their respective probabilities for a given subgroup, summarized as the variable $c$. When $c>1$, the subgroup is found to tend towards behaviors reminiscent of antifragility; when at least one subgroup of the population has $c\ge1$, the population as a whole tends towards significantly higher probabilities of "living forever," although it may first suffer a drop in population size as less robust, fragile subgroups "die off." In concluding, I discuss the limitations and ethics of such a model, notably the implications of when an upper limit is placed on the growth constant, requiring a population to facilitate an increase in the decay factor to lessen the impact of periods of failure.

Abstract:Operating safely and reliably despite continual distribution shifts is vital for high-stakes machine learning applications. This paper builds upon the transformative concept of ``antifragility'' introduced by (Taleb, 2014) as a constructive design paradigm to not just withstand but benefit from volatility. We formally define antifragility in the context of online decision making as dynamic regret's strictly concave response to environmental variability, revealing limitations of current approaches focused on resisting rather than benefiting from nonstationarity. Our contribution lies in proposing potential computational pathways for engineering antifragility, grounding the concept in online learning theory and drawing connections to recent advancements in areas such as meta-learning, safe exploration, continual learning, multi-objective/quality-diversity optimization, and foundation models. By identifying promising mechanisms and future research directions, we aim to put antifragility on a rigorous theoretical foundation in machine learning. We further emphasize the need for clear guidelines, risk assessment frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure responsible application.

Abstract:This paper considers the equilibrium-free stability and performance analysis of discrete-time nonlinear systems. We consider two types of equilibrium-free notions. Namely, the universal shifted concept, which considers stability and performance w.r.t. all equilibrium points of the system, and the incremental concept, which considers stability and performance between trajectories of the system. In this paper, we show how universal shifted stability and performance of discrete-time systems can be analyzed by making use of the time-difference dynamics. Moreover, we extend the existing results for incremental dissipativity for discrete-time systems based on dissipativity analysis of the differential dynamics to more general state-dependent storage functions for less conservative results. Finally, we show how both these equilibrium-free notions can be cast as a convex analysis problem by making use of the linear parameter-varying framework, which is also demonstrated by means of an example.

Abstract:We extend techniques and learnings about the stochastic properties of nonlinear responses from finance to medicine, particularly oncology where it can inform dosing and intervention. We define antifragility. We propose uses of risk analysis to medical problems, through the properties of nonlinear responses (convex or concave). We 1) link the convexity/concavity of the dose-response function to the statistical properties of the results; 2) define "antifragility" as a mathematical property for local beneficial convex responses and the generalization of "fragility" as its opposite, locally concave in the tails of the statistical distribution; 3) propose mathematically tractable relations between dosage, severity of conditions, and iatrogenics. In short we propose a framework to integrate the necessary consequences of nonlinearities in evidence-based oncology and more general clinical risk management.

Abstract:This paper applies risk analysis to medical problems, through the properties of nonlinear responses (convex or concave). It shows 1) necessary relations between the nonlinearity of dose-response and the statistical properties of the outcomes, particularly the effect of the variance (i.e., the expected frequency of the various results and other properties such as their average and variations); 2) The description of "antifragility" as a mathematical property for local convex response and its generalization and the designation "fragility" as its opposite, locally concave; 3) necessary relations between dosage, severity of conditions, and iatrogenics. Iatrogenics seen as the tail risk from a given intervention can be analyzed in a probabilistic decision-theoretic way, linking probability to nonlinearity of response. There is a necessary two-way mathematical relation between nonlinear response and the tail risk of a given intervention. In short we propose a framework to integrate the necessary consequences of nonlinearities in evidence-based medicine and medical risk management. Abstract:Resilience is a rehashed concept in natural hazard management - resilience of cities to earthquakes, to floods, to fire, etc. In a word, a system is said to be resilient if there exists a strategy that can drive the system state back to "normal" (acceptable states) after a shock. What formal flesh can we put on such malleable notion? We propose to frame the concept of resilience in the mathematical garbs of control theory under uncertainty. Our setting covers dynamical systems both in discrete or continuous time, deterministic or subject to uncertainties. Our definition of resilience extends others, be they "a la Holling" or rooted in viability theory. Indeed, we require that, after a shock, the system returns to an acceptable "regime" , that is, that the state-control path as a whole must return to a set of acceptable paths (and not only the state values must belong to an acceptable subset of the state set). More generally, as state and control paths are contingent on uncertainties, we require that their tails processes must lay within acceptable domains of stochastic processes. We end by pointing out how such domains can be delineated thanks to so called risk measures.
Fragility of Chess positions: measure, universality and tipping points

Abstract:We introduce a novel metric to quantify the fragility of chess positions using the interaction graph of pieces. This fragility score $F$ captures the tension within a position and serves as a strong indicator of tipping points in a game. In well-known games, maximum fragility often aligns with decisive moments marked by brilliant moves. Analyzing a large dataset of games, we find that fragility typically peaks around move $15$, with pawns ($\approx 60\%$) and knights ($\approx 20\%$) frequently involved in high-tension positions. Remarkably, average fragility curves show a universal pattern across a wide range of players, games, and openings, with a subtle deviation observed in games played by the engine Stockfish. Our analysis reveals a gradual buildup of fragility starting around $8$ moves before the peak, followed by a prolonged fragile state lasting up to $15$ moves. This suggests a gradual intensification of positional tension leading to decisive moments in the game. These insights offer a valuable tool for both players and engines to assess critical moments in chess.

Abstract:Many complex and disordered systems fail to reach equilibrium after they have been quenched or perturbed. Instead, they sluggishly relax toward equilibrium at an ever-slowing, history-dependent rate, a process termed physical aging. The microscopic processes underlying the dynamic slow-down during aging and the reason for its similar occurrence in different systems remain poorly understood. Here, we reveal the structural mechanism underlying logarithmic aging in disordered mechanical systems, through experiments in crumpled sheets and simulations of a disordered network of bi-stable elastic elements. We show that under load, the system self-organizes to a metastable state poised on the verge of an instability, where it can remain for long, but finite times. The system's relaxation is intermittent, advancing via rapid sequences of instabilities, grouped into self-similar, aging avalanches. Crucially, the quiescent dwell times between avalanches grow in proportion to the system's age, due to a slow increase of the lowest effective energy barrier, which leads to logarithmic aging.

Abstract:The $p$-modulus of curves, test plans, upper gradients, charts, differentials, approximations in energy and density of directions are all concepts associated to the theory of Sobolev functions in metric measure spaces. The purpose of this paper is to give an analogous geometric and ``fragment-wise'' theory for Lipschitz functions and Weaver derivations, where $\infty$-modulus of curve fragments, $\ast$-upper gradients and Alberti representations play a central role. We give a new definition of fragment-wise charts and prove that they exists for spaces with finite Hausdorff dimension. We give a replacement for $p$-duality in terms of Alberti representations and $\infty$-modulus and present the theory of $\ast$-upper gradients. Further, we give new and sharper results for approximations of Lipschitz functions, which yields the density of directions. Our results are applicable to all complete and separable metric measure spaces. In the process, we show that there are strong parallels between the Sobolev and Lipschitz worlds.

Abstract:Systems that evolve towards a state from which they cannot depart are common in nature. But the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, a fundamental result in statistical mechanics, is mainly restricted to systems near-stationarity. In processes with absorbing states, the total probability decays with time, eventually reaching zero and rendering the predictions from the standard response theory invalid. In this article, we investigate how such processes respond to external perturbations and develop a new theory that extends the framework of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We apply our theory to two paradigmatic examples that span vastly different fields - a birth-death process in forest ecosystems and a targeted search on DNA by proteins. These systems can be affected by perturbations which increase their rate of extinction/absorption, even though the average or the variance of population sizes are left unmodified. These effects, which are not captured by the standard response theory, are exactly predicted by our framework. Our theoretical approach is general and applicable to any system with absorbing states. It can unveil important features of the path to extinction masked by standard approaches.

Abstract:Stability is among the most important concepts in dynamical systems. Local stability is well-studied, whereas determining how "globally stable" a nonlinear system is very challenging. Over the last few decades, many different ideas have been developed to address this issue, primarily driven by concrete applications. In particular, several disciplines suggested a web of concepts under the headline "resilience". Unfortunately, there are many different variants and explanations of resilience, and often the definitions are left relatively vague, sometimes even deliberately. Yet, to allow for a structural development of a mathematical theory of resilience that can be used across different areas, one has to ensure precise starting definitions and provide a mathematical comparison of different resilience measures. In this work, we provide a systematic review of the most relevant indicators of resilience in the context of continuous dynamical systems, grouped according to their mathematical features. The indicators are also generalized to be applicable to any attractor. These steps are important to ensure a more reliable, quantitatively comparable and reproducible study of resilience in dynamical systems. Furthermore, we also develop a new concept of resilience against certain non-autonomous perturbations to demonstrate, how one can naturally extend our framework. All the indicators are finally compared via the analysis of a classic scalar model from population dynamics to show that direct quantitative application-based comparisons are an immediate consequence of a detailed mathematical analysis.

Abstract:We study nonstationary dynamical systems formed by sequential concatenation of nonuniformly expanding maps with a uniformly expanding first return map. Assuming a polynomially decaying upper bound on the tails of first return times that is nonuniform with respect to location in the sequence, we derive a corresponding sharp polynomial rate of memory loss. As applications, we obtain new estimates on the rate of memory loss for random ergodic compositions of Pomeau--Manneville type intermittent maps and intermittent maps with unbounded derivatives.
