Abstract:A granular gas is a collection of macroscopic particles that interact through energy-dissipating collisions, also known as inelastic collisions. This inelasticity is characterized by a collision mechanics in which mass and momentum are conserved and kinetic energy is dissipated. Such a system can be described by a kinetic equation of the Boltzmann type. Nevertheless, due to the macroscopic aspect of the particles, any realistic description of a granular gas should be written as a mixture model composed of M different species, each with its own mass. We propose in this work such a granular multi-species model and analyse it, providing Povzner-type inequalities, and a Cauchy theory in general Orlicz spaces. We also analyse its large time behavior, showing that it exhibits a mixture analogue of the seminal Haff's Law.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a theoretical framework for describing the Boltzmann equation of multi - component inelastic mixtures. Specifically, the author focuses on granular gases, which are systems composed of macroscopic particles that interact through inelastic collisions. This inelastic property means that during the collision process, mass and momentum are conserved, but kinetic energy is dissipated. Therefore, for any realistic description of granular gases, it should be modeled as a mixed model composed of different types of particles, each with a different mass.
The main contributions of the paper include:
1. **Model proposal**: A Boltzmann equation model applicable to multi - component inelastic mixtures is proposed and its properties are analyzed.
2. **Mathematical analysis**: The Povzner - type inequality is provided, which is an important tool for dealing with such equations.
3. **Existence and uniqueness of solutions**: The Cauchy theory is established in the general Orlicz space, and the existence and uniqueness of solutions are proved.
4. **Long - time behavior**: The long - time behavior of the equation is analyzed, showing that the system exhibits a phenomenon similar to the classical Haff's law.

### Key formulas
1. **Multi - component Boltzmann equation**:
\[
\begin{cases}
\partial_t f_i + v\cdot\nabla_x f_i=\frac{1}{\varepsilon}Q^{\text{inel}}_i(f), & f = (f_1,\ldots,f_M), \\
Q^{\text{inel}}_i(f)=\sum_{j = 1}^N Q_{i,j}(f_i,f_j), \\
f_i(0,x,v)=f^0_i(x,v).
\end{cases}
\]
2. **Inelastic collision operator**:
\[
Q_{i,j}(f_i,f_j)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{S}^{d - 1}}(f'_i f'_{j*}-f_i f_{j*})B(|v - v_*|,\cos\theta,E(f))\,d\sigma\,dv_*.
\]
3. **Kinetic energy dissipation rate**:
\[
\Delta_{ij}(|u|,E)=\frac{m_i m_j(1 - e^2)}{2(m_i + m_j)}\int_{\mathbb{S}^{d - 1}}|u\cdot\omega|^2B(|u|,\cos\theta,E)\,d\omega.
\]
4. **Povzner - type inequality**:
\[
q[\psi]=\psi(m_i|v'|^2)+\psi(m_j|v'_*|^2)-\psi(m_i|v|^2)-\psi(m_j|v_*|^2)
